The Kinross-shire Fund November 2014

We are indebted and grateful to the Kinross-shire Fund for the consistent support they have given our member groups. The support has enabled many volunteers to work together enhancing their environment and bringing about positive change. The Fund is always very helpful and approachable, with a clear understanding of the issues facing local community groups. Their funding priorities, processes and decisions are transparent and bureaucratic. Thank you Kinross-shire Fund you have made a positive difference to Kinross-shire and to many peoples lives. Zoe Clark, Take a Pride in Perthshire Association Introduction The Kinross-shire Fund was set up in 2006 with the aim of making the County a better place to live, by making grants to a wide range of local charities, organisations and projects which make a tangible, positive difference to the community. A proportion of the funds are invested to enable the Fund to respond to community needs in the future. There are four rounds of grants each year in March, June, September and December. At the request of our major donor DF Concerts, funds are also used to make annual awards to the Children s Hospice Association Scotland, (CHAS). Foundation Scotland administers the awards and provides assessments and recommendations to the Advisory Committee (see next page), currently comprising nine representatives from the local community. Criteria Strengthen existing local organisations by helping them to purchase equipment and resources Improve and develop local community facilities Encourage community activity and promote community spirit Support services for the elderly/disabled Improve information about local community issues Applications must be for at least 25% of total project costs 100% funding only considered in exceptional circumstances Higher priority given to capital projects which make a lasting difference Grants must be spent within one year of award

Impact-CHAS Rachel House, Scotland s first children s hospice, was opened in The hospice is a purposebuilt home from home providing accommodation for eight families from across Scotland at any one time. A children's hospice offers a place where families can relax, recharge their batteries and have fun with their children. Expert care is on hand to help them make the most of each day and live life to the full. The hospice supports the whole family by offering short planned breaks, emergency support, end of life care and a range of bereavement services. CHAS also provides a home care service, called CHAS at Home, staffed from both hospices and with a dedicated team in the North of Scotland. The service offers care to families in their own homes when they need it most. CHAS supports over 250 families, as well as a significant number of families who receive bereavement support. DF Concerts, through the Kinross-shire Fund, contributes to the 22,000 per day or 6 million annually needed to provide these vital hospice services.

Impact Kinross-shire Grants To date, over 50 organisations within the 73 square miles of Kinross-shire have benefitted from an award. Beneficiaries have a wide age range, from pre-school groups through to services targeted at the elderly. Several of the larger awards have gone towards the capital costs of improving community-based resources, such as the refurbishment of the Scotlandwell Wash House, re-opened in March 2013 as a small visitor/interpretation centre manned by volunteers, the refurbishment of Kinross Church Community Centre, replacement, double-glazed windows in the main hall of Milnathort Town Hall and refurbishment of the main hall floor, including repainting the sports lines, in Crook of Devon Village Hall. High profile projects funded include a contribution towards the costs of the skein of geese sculpture at the Kinross Gateway and to the Christmas lights for Kinross. Sporting clubs are well represented in the list of awardees and not just with contributions towards new equipment, such as wicket covers and a portable batting matt for Kinross Cricket Club, or new hockey goals for the King George V Playing fields. A contribution was recently made towards travelling costs for swimmers from the Kinross Otters, subsidizing their travel to participate in regional swimming competitions. The start-up Portmoak Amateur Football Club, received funding to cover their league affiliation fees. Children and young people are well catered for, with awards having been made to Swansacre Playgroup, Portmoak under-fives, Fossoway Youth Club, local Scout and Guide troops as well as local Duke of Edinburgh Award schemes. At the other end of the generational scale, Kinross-shire Volunteer Group & Rural Outreach Scheme was awarded funding towards the costs of volunteer drivers who provide a door-todoor transport service for the elderly, allowing them to visit their doctor or hospital at a minimal cost. Four mobility scooters based at the Loch Leven Heritage Trail were also part-funded by an award to the Kinross-shire Partnership. Improving the environment is also a key aim for the Fund and awards have been made to Kinross in Bloom, Milnathort in Bloom, Kinnesswood in Bloom, Kinross Potager Garden and, most recently, to the newly-formed Milnathort and Kinross Allotment Association.

Case Studies Milnathort In Bloom In 2012, the Fund gave nearly 5,000 towards the full costs of landscape improvements around the village war memorial in Milnathort. This included edging the beds, adding new soil, refurbishing the paths and planting the beds in native perennial plants to give colour all year round. The project complemented a wider project to refurbish the war memorial itself. Kinross Potager Garden The Kinross Potager Garden is a community garden providing a pleasant place where people can learn about growing vegetables and gardening in an environmentally-friendly and enjoyable way.there are regular activities for the benefit of Kinross-shire residents, school children and the wider community. The site is laid out in a formal pattern where flowers, fruit and vegetables are grown together. There is a large greenhouse which doubles as a classroom. In 2011, the Fund made a 100% grant of 4359 to the Gardens to fund an automatic irrigation system which is buried underground to enable watering to only be carried out when necessary, saving both water and volunteer time.

Kinross-shire day Care Centre Kinross-shire Day Care Centre provides a welcoming, safe and homely atmosphere, where elderly members can feel their rights and choices are being respected at all times. Open every weekday from 8.30 am pm, transport is provided to and from the centre in mini-buses, both of which have easy access and passenger lifts. A full programme of activities is provided as well as help with issues such as personal care, form-filling and chiropody. A three course lunch plus coffee is served every day for 3. In 2011, the Centre applied for a grant of 816 towards the costs of new equipment, such as a microwave, dishwasher and cash register and to cover the printing costs for a new promotional leaflet. The equipment was much needed as the Club has not had the funds to install modern facilities: for example, their till was 28 years old, didn t produce a recipt and still had the old half penny on it! The new microwave was to be especially useful, as some of the lunch club members have special dietary needs, so food can be bought in especially for them and heated up more easily. The leaflets were produced and are used to promote the service and ensure everyone who would benefit from the club knows about it by being distributed in doctor's surgeries, the library etc. This leaflet was noticed by a lady whose Mum had recently been diagnosed with dementia, whilst her Dad had just been admitted permanently to a care home. On reading the leaflet, she thought the Centre was the perfect place for her Mum. The mother now attends everyday and enjoys the company and activities. This has relieved some of the stress and anxiety for her daughter, who now has more time to spend with her father in the care home. Kinnesswood in Bloom In 2010, the Fund gave an award of 1,000-50% of the costs, towards the creation of a printed walking trail guide for families, residents, tourists and visitors, linked to the Michael Bruce Way, so that everyone could explore the history, heritage and architecture of the village and enjoy the health benefits gained by walking. The whole community became involved, with a local graduate editing it, a local graphic artist designing it and older people contributing their memories. In addition, a children s guide was also produced having been designed by running a competition with P3/4 pupils at the local school, Portmoak Primary. The children s competition entries were displayed at Portmoak Gala. The trail guides have now been produced and are available at a small cost at various outlets in the village. The children s leaflets are free.
