Interestng walks Lerwck s a very pcturesque town to explore on foot, we can recommend the followng easy walkng routes: Knab coastlne mostly paved but coastal areas are narrow n some sectons; all or parts of the walk can be done n ths crcular route around passng hstorc buldngs and churches, sea clffs, wld mammals and seabrds. Clckmn Broch On the shore of Clckmn Loch s an outstandng example of a broch, a sophstcated type of stone-bult round house found only n Scotland. Clckmn Broch has evdence of settlement spannng over a thousand years. The broch tower stll stands to an mpressve heght and the whole promontory s enclosed by a stout wall. Once nsde, the engmatc blockhouse rses up n front of the broch tself. To the west of the broch

3 tower are the remans of a number of dfferent structures datng from around 1000 BC to 500 AD. Lerwck s clam to fame n the cruse world s as beng the brthplace of Arthur Anderson, co-founder of P&O and credted wth nventng crusng. Hs home, the Böd of Gremsta, s now a Textle museum, housng nterestng artefacts from hs lfe. Shetland Lbrary s on Lower Hllhead, and contans almost all books publshed n or about Shetland, mcro flm browsers for old newspaper edtons and lterature on Shetland genealogy & famly hstory. There s free w-f and 16 publc access computers. Fort Charlotte Wander among the massve walls of an artllery fort bult to protect the Sound of Bressay from the Dutch. Constructon of Fort Charlotte began though was not completed n 1665, durng the Second Dutch War. It was rebult more n 1781, durng the War of Amercan Independence, but the newer fort never saw mltary acton. Today, the fort s presented much as t would have looked n the 1780s. Kng George VI Park a peaceful reflectve place to take a break and walk among well-tended seasonal floral dsplays. Lerwck Town Hall Wth ts promnent clock tower, Lerwck s Town Hall from the nneteenth century s Shetland s man cvc buldng, standng promnently over the town and open to vstors. It was desgned to domnate the surroundng townscape from ts settng on the rdge of the Hllhead. Its mpressve staned glass wndows are ntended to convey powerful mages of Shetland s hertage and Lerwck s cvc prde.
