3 Join us for a Spectacular Cruise in Company along Scotland s West Coast and Islands 12th-21st July 2011 On the Cruise between Greenock and Lerwick, trainees and sailing guests will have the opportunity to enjoy invigorating sailing, amazing coastal scenery and a warm welcome from unique Scottish ports whilst on route to Lerwick. From ceilidhs to beach barbeques, there is something to offer everyone. A chance not to be missed, the 9 day Cruise in Company offers the chance to call into a variety of ports, both large and small to sample the best of Scottish hospitality and scenery. A Unique Cruise in Company Every year a Cruise in Company leg is part of The Tall Ships Races. This leg is not a competitive event, but a cruise of friendship and adventure. In 2011, the Cruise in Company leg is between Greenock and Lerwick and ships have 9 days on this 484 nautical mile journey (shortest route) over the top of Britain. This gives ships the chance to visit many places both along the Scottish coastline and within the island communities that are buzzing with excitement ready to welcome the fleet. Many of the guest harbours are also looking forward to getting their own young ambassadors participating in the Race Series in 2011 and we look forward to building sail training links within each community to ensure this is achieved. The Shetland Organising Committee has selected 12 harbours on the leg, ready to welcome a small or large number of participating ships. In this brochure the 12 guest harbours introduce themselves and give a flavour of what Scotland has to offer. Exciting Experiences The Tall Ships crews and trainees have the opportunity to explore the Scottish coastline and islands from 12th July when the fleet leaves Greenock, until all participants are berthed in Lerwick during 21st July at the latest. When submitting the entry forms for The Tall Ships Races 2011, the vessels should specify which ports they wish to visit on the leg from Greenock to Lerwick. Each port will be able to prepare an excellent programme of activities, which will be enhanced by early communications between their areas and ships to meet your needs. The capacity in each harbour varies, and each port will give priority to ships that make early confirmation about their plans. Once a harbour is fully booked, alternative harbours will be proposed on the route and Cruise in Company details will be posted on A dedicated Cruise in Company team will be present in Greenock to answer any queries and collect passage plans to ensure that the Coastguard, Guest Harbours and Event Organisers provide a safe and well coordinated cruising experience for all the fleet. 1

4 Shetland is working in partnership with Scottish guest harbours to prepare fantastic social and cultural programmes in each area to offer ships. We want to give ports the unique opportunity to welcome The Tall Ships Fleet in a celebration of international culture and friendship. In particular, the Cruise in Company guest harbours will also be working to provide opportunities for young people from around Scottish coastal and island communities to take part in this fantastic Race Series and join your fellow trainees onboard ships for this experience of a lifetime. For general enquiries on the Cruise in Company please contact Fiona Dally in the Lerwick office on +44 (0)

7 Welcome to Campbeltown Campbeltown Loch is a safe and sheltered harbour which can offer berthing and anchorage for ships. Popularly known as The Wee Toon, Campbeltown is the largest settlement in Kintyre with a population of about 5,500. Founded in the early 1600s the town became a Royal Burgh in 1700 and went on to become a prosperous, bustling fishing port with a well sheltered harbour, a centre for coastal shipping, boat building, coal mining and whisky distilling. Campbeltown is the centre for local services with a good range of shops, two small supermarkets, hospital, plentiful accommodation, a museum, heritage centre and the oldest operating cinema in the country. The farm land in South Kintyre is fertile with substantial dairy farms. The milk goes to the local creamery to produce the award winning Campbeltown Cheddar Cheese. Close to Campbeltown, on the Atlantic side of the peninsula, is Machrihanish, a small village with a famous golf course. The first hole at Machrihanish was recently voted, the best first hole in the world, by top PGA golfers. The course is very challenging and is becoming increasingly well known to overseas golfers, especially from the USA. Lively competition exists between the local football teams and a high standard in the swimming team brings home the awards. Eight distilleries carry names of distinction like no other single malt throughout the world and each one is willing to share their speciality with those who visit. The RSPB has two protected areas on the island, both offering a chance to see birds rarely found elsewhere. The strong community treasures its Pipe Band and any Ceilidh in the local hall is always better than the last! Any golfer will know that The Machrie is the best links course on the west coast of Scotland and will challenge at any level. 9 Welcome to Oban North Pier Oban lies on the West Coast of Scotland approximately 120 miles NW of Glasgow with which it has road and rail connections. It operates a central hub for the ferry services to the Inner and Outer Hebrides. The sheltered bay is a popular tourist resort and port of call for yachts and cruise ships. Oban today has a resident population of 8,500 and is the unofficial capital of the West Highlands - the Gateway to the Isles. It has developed into Scotland s seafood capital and most popular westcoast holiday town. The panoramic views of the mountains, lochs and islands have captivated artists, authors, composers, and poets for centuries. These views are as striking now as they were when Dunollie Castle, (a ruined keep which has stood sentinel over the narrow entrance to the sheltered bay for around six hundred years), was the northern outpost of the Dalriadic Scots. Within Oban the most outstanding feature is McCaig s Tower. This is the Coliseum lookalike that stands above the town and features in many of the postcards you will find for sale in the shops on George Street. Beyond Oban ( little bay in Gaelic - Scotland s ancient Celtic language) lie the islands of the Inner Hebrides: Kerrera, which protects the town from Atlantic storms; the low, green island of Lismore; majestic Mull; and the granite mountains of the Morvern peninsula. Beyond them, the sacred island of Iona (home of Scottish Christianity since St Columba stepped ashore in AD563), Coll, Colonsay and Tiree, as well as Staffa (Fingal s Cave).
