Wapeminskink becomes known among white visitors as Anderson s Town Frederick Bronnenberg Jr. builds house at what is now Mounds State Park, determines historic area should remain unspoiled Andersontown officially renamed Anderson Anderson incorporated as city. As we approach the 150th anniversary of our city s founding, we are proud to be recognized for the resilience and growth we have accomplished as a community. A year-long celebration of our incorporation will take place throughout Anderson s Sesquicentennial Celebration will be a world-class event in which residents, businesses and visitors can participate. The cornerstone of the celebration will be 150 hours of celebration during the week of August 22-28, ending with the largest birthday party in Anderson s history. Numerous events and activities are scheduled to honor the City s history and culture as well as focus on Anderson s promising future. We invite you to become a partner in this historic endeavor. 3 Leaving a Legacy In celebration of the city s 150th birthday, we want to honor our past, present and future with two legacy projects: The Sesquicentennial Mural and a city-wide tree planting. Today and Tomorrow: The Sesquicentennial Mural Month of August 2015 Local artists will recreate a large-scale version of the sesquicentennial logo on a building located at 11th and Meridian streets in downtown Anderson. A fitting tribute to the City s 150th birthday! Service and Saplings: City-Wide Tree Planting Project Month of August 2015 In honor of the community s 150 years, volunteers will gather to plant trees at designated locations. Anderson is a many-time Tree City USA honoree. Varieties planted will grow into beautiful, longstanding reminders of the sesquicentennial. Anderson 150 Celebration Week Be a part of history as Anderson commemorates its sesquicentennial birthday. Anderson s sesquicentennial celebration will culminate in a week of fun, engaging activities that not only harken to the community s storied past but point to a bright future. The week kicks off with the Sesquicentennial Gala, followed by daily events like Artistry and Imagination, a planting of 150 trees, commemorative mural unveiling, Legends of Anderson luncheon, Picnic and Praise concert, Hoosier Park fun, birthday cake and much, much more. There is something for everyone! COMMUNITY CANVASES: ART AND HISTORY ON DISPLAY Week of August Individual artists or teams of up to 3 individuals will paint, draw, or paste images on large canvases that depict Anderson history or Anderson arts and culture. Special consideration will be given to entries that incorporate both topics in their artwork. Canvases will be judged and prizes will be awarded for the top three pieces of art. Artwork will be on display during the week-long Sesquicentennial celebration. FLIP FLOPS AND FORMALS: THE SESQUICENTENNIAL GALA Saturday, August 22 Hosted by Mayor Kevin Smith and his wife Anita, this first-class dinner and dance will feature good food and good times with a historical twist. Ticket-sale proceeds will benefit city beautification efforts. ARTISTRY AND IMAGINATION: COMMUNITY ARTS COLLABORATION Sunday, August 23 Anderson has a rich history in the arts and a vibrant current-day scene. The Anderson Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert at the Paramount Theatre. The Anderson Center for the Arts, Anderson Young Ballet Theatre, MainStage Theatre and Anderson Area Youth Chorale band together to celebrate local talent and creativity downtown. Visit the Community Canvases display and enjoy art in the park. Free to the public. LEGENDS AND LUNCH: LEGENDS OF ANDERSON LUNCHEON Tuesday, August 25 Anderson s past sparkles with residents who have gained national even worldwide fame. Dodgers pitcher Carl Erskine. Pro basketball s Ray Tolbert and Bobby Wilkerson. GM president and U.S. Secretary of State Charles E. Wilson. Christian music artist Sandi Patty. These and other notables have called Anderson home. The Legends Luncheon, a collaboration among local service organizations, will honor their legacy and rekindle the tales of their many accomplishments. Ticket sale proceeds will benefit Anderson s service club organizations. PICNIC AND PRAISE: ANDERSON SINGS Wednesday, August 26 The inspirational sounds of gospel music will lift spirits when church choirs and other gospel artists from across the city gather at Jackson Park to give voice to Anderson s soaring spirit. Free to the public. THRILLS AND CHILLS: A HOOSIER PARK CELEBRATION Thursday, August 27 No one hosts a party like Hoosier Park Racing & Casino, which will welcome visitors with music, fun and games for a full evening of celebration. HONOR AND CELEBRATE: ANDERSON 150TH BIRTHDAY BASH Friday, August 28 A giant birthday cake, fireworks and an Anderson High School football game.
