1 Father Jacob Koether installed as new Pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church by Peter Moralez On December 22, 2018, Bishop Brendan Cahill, Bishop of the Diocese of Victoria installed Father Jacob Koether the new Pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church (OLS). The ceremony was attended by approximately 500 parishioners, which included church staff and council and organization members. Koether replaced Pastor Gabriel Espinoza, who was transferred to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Bay City, Texas. Koether is 31 years old and is a priest of the Diocese of Victoria, and has been ordained for three years. He has previously served at Holy Family, Saint Ann, Queen of Peace, and Saint John the Baptist churches. He was born in Van Vleck, Texas and his home parish is Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City. Koether attended Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio where he majored in Catechetic and Philosophy. He also attended Saint Mary s Seminary in Houston for Theological Studies for the Priesthood. I m so pleased to be installed as the pastor at OLS. Both the mass and reception for my installment were really beautiful. It was truly a blessing to have my family, friends and so many parishioners present, and the kind and encouraging words from Bishop Cahill were heartfelt, he said Father Jacob has a formidable task in front of him pasturing to OLS, which includes Capilla de la Santísima Trinidad. This is the chapel located on Pleasant Green Drive in South Victoria. Approximately, 1,800 to 2,000 people attend Sunday mass he said, adding, As pastor I want to continue to minister to our parishioners, and grow the church by encouraging the adults of the parish to lead by example. He has been in the process of meeting with leaders of the church council as well as the leaders of church organizations. It is our desire to concentrate our efforts on building our parishioner base and strengthening church organizations to provide an atmosphere of love and concern for all, as God intends for us to do. Father Jacob said that he feels God has placed him here at the right time. I feel that people are hungry for spiritual guidance, and while youth are the hope for our future it is essential that that longtime parishioners continue to lead the parish with their tireless efforts. He cites revitalizing the city s economic vision, repairing an aging infrastructure, improving emergency preparedness, and managing city government like a well-run business as his chief priorities. Victoria is a wonderful place with great potential, but we have fallen behind in recent decades. We have not developed a sustainable base of higher-paying local jobs, several of our major retail and commercial businesses have closed, and we have difficulty retaining talent and attracting top-tier economic development. 3 Revista de Victoria, February Counterfeit money circulating through our community by Officer John Turner Recently we ve seen some increase in the complaints of counterfeit cash used to defraud both businesses and individuals. In incidents had been reported. The most common denominations being used are 20, 50 and 100 dollars although that doesn t mean someone won t try a lower denomination. The latest incidents involved novelty money, which are commonly used as movie props. At first glance, the cash looks authentic but further examination reveals otherwise. If you miss the obvious Only Motion Picture Purposes or For Motion Picture Use Only printed clearly on the front, you ll probably notice the feel. These novelty dollars feel different than actual dollars. Why is this? Two reasons. First, U.S. currency is not printed Novelty money. Contributed photo. on ordinary paper but a material made of cotton and linen. Second, is the use of raised printing: try running your fingernail over the images on any of your folding money. You should notice the rougher texture. It s especially distinct on a crisp, new bill. For denominations of $5 and above, other less obvious but still visible, security measures have been included. Imbedded security threads, micro printing and watermark portraits. The security threads and watermarks can both be seen when held up to a light. When exposed to UV light, the security threads will actually glow a different color for each denomination (red - $100, yellow - $50, green - $20, orange - $10 and blue - $5) Denominations of $10 and above have an additional security measure, again clearly visible: color-shifting ink. Take a close look at the numeral in the lower right hand corner of one of these bills and tilt it just a bit. You ll notice the color change from copper to green. In addition to all of the above, $100 bills also have a blue 3-D security ribbon visible to the right of Franklin s portrait. All of these obvious security measures have been built in to our currency to protect us from unscrupulous criminals who want nothing more than to separate victims from their property. The problem is that we are often in a hurry and don t take the time to examine the cash handed to us during a transaction. Take a few extra seconds to double check any cash you receive and don t hesitate to call police if you have been given counterfeit money. Contributed photo. by Meridith Byrd In 1986, the Community Food Bank was founded to address the issue of hunger in Victoria. For the first seven years we were housed in three different buildings first in the former Fiesta Restaurant on the Port Lavaca Highway, then to the former Fed Mart building on Mockingbird, and finally to an old skating rink before raising enough money to build our current building on East Rio Grande. The new building allowed our growth to continue, expanding our service area to 10 counties in addition to Victoria, and sparking a name change to the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent to better reflect our regional impact. As we grew, so did the number of services we could offer. Our kids backpack program provides children with nourishing meals during the weekend. We conduct mobile food pantries in rural communities where there are no agencies to serve at-risk populations. Our social service assistance helps clients apply for benefits such as SNAP, Medicaid and WIC. SNAP nutritional education for children, families and seniors teaches these groups to make better food choices. The farmers market program is an opportunity for the Food Bank to establish a working relationship with local farmers and growers, while providing access to fresh produce to the general public and our clients alike. With each new program has come with the addition of new staff to manage them, necessitating more office space. We have one small parking lot to accommodate our ever-growing staff, volunteers, food pantries and other visitors. Our walk-in cooler and freezer are not large enough for us to be able to accept every load of fresh or frozen food, so at times we miss out on food that we could have provided to our clients. Though we have known for quite awhile that we needed a larger warehouse, Hurricane Harvey reiterated that point. We proved that our amazing staff could ramp up our operations as needed, but every aisle in our warehouse was packed with pallets of food, leaving barely any room to walk (much less maneuver a forklift). So once again we find ourselves having outgrown our space, and we could not be more proud of our growth. After weighing the cost effectiveness of adding on to our current building versus purchasing a building, CEO Robin Cadle obtained permission from the Board of Directors to make an offer on a building. In early February, she closed on the former Ad Graphics building on South Laurent. Once renovations are complete our new location will triple the amount of warehouse space, double the amount of office space, and provide much needed parking spaces for volunteers and visitors. With the larger cooler and freezer space that will be built, we will be able to store more food than ever before for our member agencies and those we serve. It is an exciting time here at the Food Bank, serving more people than at any other point in our 32-year history. Yes, it s back-to-school time; a time to let or maybe force our older children to return to the halls of those institutions set up to open their minds to disciplines that will ensure an educated and better future. Additionally, we must also encourage and support our youngest children, those just beginning the role of students, into believing and accepting that they are embarking in a most important era of their lives. This era will affect their future personally and, possibly, publicly, but nonetheless forever, since we live in a society that judges others on the wealth and education acquired in a classroom. Even though there are few exceptions, no longer is personal experience or hard work sufficient in opening doors to a guaranteed successful future. In reality, neither is a full education, but it is a lot of help. A popular belief is that it is the parents duty to teach right from wrong, and to discipline as needed and required before the children are sent to school. On the other hand, it has become an accepted view that it should be the teachers and schools to share in disciplining and teaching right from wrong. Unfortunately, with diverse economic means, social upbringings and reality of legal culpability, many students fall through the cracks. See EDUCATION, pg. 12

I read a story last week that says a local nonprofit called Rebuild Texas has made an Albatross. Contributed photo. offer to buy and refurbish the Victoria Advocate building on Constitution Street for $1.1 million dollars. In addition, Victoria County is putting up $100,000 of taxpayer money to complete the deal, and maintenance the building from the date of purchase till whenever. The breakdown is $500,000 for the purchase, and $700,000 to refurbish. Now, if memory serves, Rebuild Texas is currently occupying a building on Bridge Street that First Baptist Church had built and I m sure it s no larger than 2,000 square feet. In addition to that, they rent a storage facility. And they want to trade that in for approximately 70,000 square feet while waiting for, here it comes, to better prepare the Crossroads for its next disaster. Now correct me if I m wrong but with the exception of the flood of 1998, and Hurricane Harvey in 2017, what other disasters have plagued the Victoria region? Maybe they know something we don t! What a private nonprofit does isn t really my concern, even if I feel that it sure doesn t ring of good business sense to upgrade from this economy sized building, but that s their prerogative. And with the county of Victoria insuring the buy, why not? What does get my attention is the county of Victoria offering up $100,000 and endless maintenance for a structure that no one else was going to buy, and getting the Victoria Advocate off the hook. Guess the Ad graphics building is next on the list! Oh no that s right, The Food Bank of the Golden Crescent already purchased that property, and since those two buildings combine for a value of close to two million dollars the county, city and several other taxable entities will be out whatever tax dollars are paid for those two properties on an annual basis, since nonprofits don t pay taxes. Review of the tax records indicate that is a total of approximately $50,000 paid in taxes for these two properties annually. So Victoria County is footing part of the purchase price, the utilities for the structure, whatever happens to breakdown during their ownership, and regular maintenance costs. In exchange, approximately 43,000 square feet of the structure will go to the county to use as it sees fit. However, the county will have to make See MAS-O-MENOS, pg. 10

Recently the Diocese of Victoria released the names of priests that served locally who were accused of sexual misconduct. While Father Jacob indicated that the Diocese of Victoria is dealing with local press regarding this matter he did say, This is a very hard subject to deal with it is best that victims are being heard. It has affected all of us casting a shadow on the work we do and many people have been hurt and heartbroken, but I believe that it is essential that we work together to deal with this issue. OLS has two priests to serve its community. In addition to Father Jacob, Father Eliecer Patiño Hurtado serves as Parochial Vicar, and Edward Molina serves as Deacon. Just for arguments sake, let s also consider that the building was built, I believe in the 1950s, so there s a possibility that there may be either lead based paint or asbestos in and on the premise. Until there s a detailed inspection by what I feel should be a disinterested third party, the taxpayers of Victoria County won t know if there will be an additional expense to eradicate potential contaminants. This is a lot to digest and I feel it s essential that before the county spends a single dollar on the Victoria Advocate building I would suggest that county officials dot all their i s and cross all their t s. That being said it sure sounds like a win for the owners of the Victoria Advocate and their incredible luck in divesting themselves from this albatross! Onion-Thyme Gravy: pesto In a medium saucepan melt 2 1/3 cup finely chopped fresh sage Tbsp. butter over medium-high ¼ cup finely chopped walnuts heat. Add 1-cup chopped onion, ½ teaspoon salt 3 shallots (about 2/3 cup), and 1 ½ teaspoon freshly ground black tsp. snipped fresh thyme (or 1/4 pepper tsp. dried thyme crushed); cook, 1 recipe Onion-Thyme Gravy (optional) stirring occasionally, for 10 to 12 minutes or until vegetables are tender and browned. 1. Thaw turkey, if frozen. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Coat a large shallow roasting pan and rack with cooking spray. Place turkey breast halves, bone side down, on rack in prepared pan. Set aside. 2. In a medium bowl combine pesto, sage, walnuts, salt, and pepper; mix well. Reserve half the pesto mixture to pass with turkey. Cover; chill until serving time. 3. Starting at the breast bone, slip your fingers between skin and meat to loosen skin, leaving skin attached at top. Rub about twothirds of the remaining pesto mixture under the skin over the breast meat. Rub remaining pesto mixture over the skin of each breast halve. Insert an oven-going meat thermometer into thickest part of turkey breast, without touching bone. Roast, uncovered, for 20 OH-SO-GOOD CORNBREAD STUFFING 2 cups chopped, peeled, raw sweet potatoes 1 cup chopped onion 2 cups sliced celery 1 tablespoon snipped fresh cilantro 1teaspoon ground ginger 5 cups coarsely crumbled corn bread ¾ cup chopped walnuts 2 to 4 tablespoons chicken broth ¼ cup margarine butter 1. In a large skillet cook sweet potatoes, onion, and celery in hot margarine or butter for 5 to 7 minutes or until just tender. Spoon mixture into a large mixing bowl. Stir in cilantro and ginger. Add cornbread and walnuts; toss gently to coat. Add enough chicken broth to moisten. 2. Use to stuff one 8-to-10- pound bird or place stuffing in a 1½ to 2 quart casserole. Bake casserole, covered in a 375ºF. oven about 45 minutes or until heated through. Makes about 6 cups stuffing (10 servings). 3. Make-Ahead Tip: Prepare stuffing; cover and chill up to 24 hours. Do not use to stuff bird. Bake in casserole as directed. ROASTED VEGETABLE SALAD 1-pound tiny new potatoes Fresh Herb Vinaigrette 8 ounces fresh asparagus spears ¾ cup grape tomatoes 6 cups mixed salad greens, such as small romaine, radicchio, arugula or leaf lettuce 2 ounces thinly sliced prosciutto, cut into strips 1 ounce Asiago cheese, shaved 1. Preheat oven to 425ºF. Scrub potatoes thoroughly; cut in half. In a 13x9x2-inch baking pan, toss potatoes with 2 tablespoons of the Fresh Herb Vinaigrette. 2. Roast potatoes in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, stirring once halfway through cooking. Meanwhile, wash asparagus. Break off woody bases where spears snap easily. Add the asparagus, tomatoes, and 2 tablespoons vinaigrette to the pan with potatoes. Roast for 10 minutes more, stirring once. 3. To serve, arrange salad greens on a large platter. Arrange potatoes, asparagus, and tomatoes on top. Top with strips of prosciutto and shave Asiago cheese. Serve with remaining Fresh Herb Vinaigrette. Makes 6 side-dish servings. 4. McCoy credits his success in business to Victoria s long-held conservative values of hard work and self-determination. He was first introduced to architecture as a sophomore at Victoria High School, and nurtured his interest by interning with the late Victoria architect Warren Young. After working his way through Victoria College and Texas A&M University, graduating with two degrees, Rawley turned down opportunities to work in major cities and instead chose to establish his practice in his hometown. This is a special place. When I was born, my father was managing a grocery store, but he worked hard, and together with some partners started a concrete business that lasted four decades. I knew that hard work could grow a career and a business in Victoria. Now, I work with businesses and community leaders all over Texas, and I know that today s economy is growing more and more competitive. If we want Victoria to be the kind of place where future generations can live their American Dream, we need to be serious about laying a foundation for future success. Ultimately, that s why I feel compelled to run for Mayor, said McCoy. McCoy has a long history of servant leadership with the area. EDUCATION, from pg. 8 Those with minimal means can be insulted because of misunderstandings of simple things as what they wear, eat or participate in. Those that have the wealth to dress expensively, eat out every day and participate in several extracurricular activities may sometimes not realize they are insulting others by their behavior and actions. It is because of this environment that some students can go astray, get into trouble and make education of secondary importance. Some eventually drop out. Teachers sometimes, too, do not realize that maybe their students have not been exposed to nor have the means of understanding certain activities, which can lead to miscommunication and antagonisms among students and faculty. It is imperative that the community work together in eliminating as many obstacles and misunderstandings as possible to accomplish the all-important task of encouraging education and allowing for a more equitable playing field. Parents should be the leaders at home, teachers should be allowed to teach, administrators should be supportive, attentive and openminded, and relatives, neighbors and friends when the opportunity presents itself should make an effort to encourage and praise school attendance, even to strangers. Pointing fingers and failure to work together will undoubtedly negatively affect us all. It may not be the community s duty to raise the child, but failure to help could eventually lead to having to support the child and maybe even lead to the community s downfall.
