Peter Wiley, cellist, is a Grammynominated artist on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music, and is a member of the Guarneri String Quartet. HARVARD study leader As this brochure goes to print, we have not yet confirmed the faculty study leader for this program. We intend, however, that you will be joined by a Harvard lecturer who will enhance your travel experience. You will discover that our lecturers are not only first rate scholars and teachers but also friendly traveling companions, eager to share their insight through conversation as well as in scheduled presentations. ADDITIONAL Study Leaders Robin Wright is a fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. 3 from istanbul to casablanca October 13 29, 2012 trip overview Carthage What could be more captivating than exploring practically the entire length of the fabled Mediterranean, including its lesser known shores? When you combine a stimulating lecture series, likeminded inquisitive travelers, and the transcendent joy of music it is hard to imagine a more compelling voyage. Changes of historic importance are afoot in the Mediterranean, and you will have the opportunity to learn firsthand about these momentous developments from your lecturers, which will include a Harvard study leader, as well as journalist and author Robin Wright who has spent decades covering the region. Archaeologist Shelley Wachsmann will serve as your guide to the monuments of ancient civilizations you will encounter from Istanbul to Casablanca: the Minoan ruins on Crete, the stunning Greek and Roman sites at Syracuse, the magnificently restored 3 rd -century b.c. city of Ephesus, the remains of storied Carthage, and the extensive and well preserved but seldom visited ancient sites of Algeria. And all along the way a group of worldclass musicians, under the direction of maestro Lowell Liebermann, will perform music ranging from Mozart and Beethoven to Shostakovich and Liebermann himself. Concerts and recitals will take place at exclusive venues ashore as well as aboard Corinthian II, the perfect vessel for this itinerary large enough to have all of the amenities for a comfortably elegant experience, but small enough to navigate harbors inaccessible to larger ships. Fall is the ideal time of the year to visit these shores. And the landmark sites you will explore, combined with musical performances and expert insights into ancient and contemporary culture, promise a truly memorable experience.
