These glorious, interconnected bodies of water are a natural treasure shared by the United States and Canada. And like so many wonders that lie close to home, very few American travelers have explored them. But this summer, you have an unprecedented opportunity to cruise to all five of the Great Lakes. Great cities have grown up on the shores of the lakes Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, to name just a few. The lakes are a source of water for countless small towns and farms. They are a highway for shipping, with a direct link to the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence Seaway. In summer the lakes are a paradise, with opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing, and all manner of water sports. But there are also vast stretches of lakeshore that are as pristine as when the Native American tribes paddled their canoes in these waters. 3 HARVARD STUDY LEADER As this brochure goes to print, we have not yet confirmed the faculty study leader for this program. We intend, however, that you will be joined by a Harvard lecturer who will enhance your travel experience. You will discover that our lecturers are not only first-rate scholars and teachers but also friendly traveling companions, eager to share their insight through conversation as well as in scheduled presentations. ADDITIONAL LECTURERS William Cogar is a life-long student of naval history. He served as Vice President for Collections and Research at Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut, and until his retirement in 2011 was President and CEO of The Mariners Museum in Newport News, Virginia. From 1983 to 1998, he was Professor of Naval History at the U.S. Naval Academy, during which time he also served as Director of the Naval Academy Museum. Author of books on naval and maritime history including the Dictionary of Admirals of the U.S. Navy and the Encyclopedia of Naval History, he is a frequent speaker at history and museum conferences, and a popular lecturer. Barton Buzz Thompson, a leading global authority on environmental and natural resources law, is one of the founding directors of Stanford s Woods Institute for the Environment. While travelling the United States in 1831, Thompson notes, Alexis de Tocqueville called the Great Lakes the most extraordinary spectacle that I have seen in my life. The Great Lakes is central to the history and economic expansion of the United States and a favorite setting for American novelists, including Ernest Hemingway in The Nick Adams Stories. Buzz will talk about the natural and human history of the Great Lakes, the role that Frederick Law Olmsted played in protecting Niagara Falls, the Great Lakes century-old water wars, and the environmental challenges that face the Great Lakes today. 4 SCHEDULE BY DAY Greenfield Village Round Island Lighthouse MONDAY, JULY 29, 2013 TORONTO, Ontario, Canada EMBARK Fly to Toronto and embark Yorktown. (D) TUESDAY, JULY 30 LAKE ONTARIO WELLAND CANAL NIAGARA FALLS LAKE ERIE Arrive this morning at Port Weller, from where Yorktown begins the dramatic passage from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie via the Welland Canal. A series of eight locks designed as a continuous flight of stairs lifts Yorktown feet over a distance of 27 miles. From the decks of the ship witness the mechanics of this engineering marvel, which took over 100 years to complete. Then disembark for an excursion to Niagara Falls, one of North America s most spectacular natural wonders, where you ll see both the American Falls and Horseshoe (Canadian) Falls. (B, L, D) WEDNESDAY, JULY 31 CRUISING LAKE ERIE DETROIT, Michigan Enjoy a day at sea as Yorktown navigates through Lake Erie and into the Detroit River. In the evening, arrive at the glittering city of Detroit with its beautifully renovated International Riverfront, attractive waterfront parks, and the Renaissance Center, home of General Motors world headquarters. (B, L, D) THURSDAY, AUGUST 1 DETROIT In the morning, tour the Henry Ford Museum and the adjacent Greenfield Village, an indoor/ outdoor history museum complex housing a wide array of historical buildings, machinery, exhibits, and Americana. Alternately, visit the Ford Rouge Factory to see how environmental innovation meets industrial production at this state-of-the-art facility. Cruise from Detroit and enter Lake St. Clair and navigate through the St. Clair River, a component of the Great Lakes Waterway, to Lake Huron. (B, L, D) FRIDAY, AUGUST 2 ALPENA PRESQUE ISLE ALPENA Arrive in Thunder Bay to call at the lovely town of Alpena, home to an outstanding maritime museum with displays on Great Lakes maritime history. Alternately travel north to the small peninsula of Presque Isle, an untouched place of great beauty with two historic lighthouses. Pristine forests, numerous inland lakes, and 72 miles of Lake Huron shoreline on the central flyway make Presque Isle a birder s paradise. (B, L, D) SATURDAY, AUGUST 3 MACKINAC ISLAND Arrive in beautiful Mackinac Island, a Victorian-era haven where cars are forbidden and bicycles share the road with horsedrawn carriages. Explore this idyllic island and see the ancient limestone formations that were considered sacred by the Straits Indians; the impressive Fort Mackinac, built atop a high cliff by the British in 1780; and the landmark Victorian Grand Hotel. Also enjoy free time to stroll along streets lined with ginger-breadtrimmed buildings and browse in the charming shops. Sail through the straits of Mackinac under the Mackinac Bridge into Lake Michigan. (B, L, D) SUNDAY, AUGUST 4 MANISTIQUE Call at Manistique, a small town on the bucolic Garden Peninsula that juts into Lake Michigan. Explore this scenic and peaceful area, including the Big Spring, in Palms Book State Park, its crystal clear waters stretching 200 feet across; and Fayette, the center of a large smelting operation in the 19 th century, now one of the country s most evocative industrial ghost towns, protected as a state park site. 5 Lake Superior s ruggedly beautiful shoreline MONDAY, AUGUST 5 SAULT STE. MARIE, Michigan, USA AGAWA CANYON, Ontario, Canada SAULT STE. MARIE, Michigan, USA Dock at Sault Ste. Marie, where you will see the Soo Locks from the viewing platform in town and visit a 1917 Great Lakes freighter, now a museum. Alternatively, take a full-day tour by train, traveling inland through the magnificent scenery of the Agawa Canyon. After leaving Sault St. Marie, Yorktown transits the Soo Locks, known as the busiest in the world, where some 12,000 ships pass annually. (B, L, D) TUESDAY, AUGUST 6 PICTURED ROCKS MARQUETTE Spend the morning at sea sailing along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, a 40-mile stretch of pristine natural wonders along Lake Superior s southern coast. The colorful sandstone cliffs are of particular interest, having created beautiful arches, caves, and other formations over time. In the afternoon call in Marquette. Explore this picturesque city on Lake Superior, including a visit to the Marquette Maritime Museum and Lighthouse. (B, L, D) WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7 HOUGHTON, KEWEENAW PENINSULA Today Yorktown will navigate through the Portage Waterway, the narrow channel that separates Michigan s Keweenaw Peninsula from the mainland, to call at quaint Houghton, built on a bluff facing the channel. Keweenaw witnessed the country s first mineral rush, when vast deposits of copper were discovered in By the time the rush was over early in the 20 th century, copper had generated enormous wealth, estimated to be ten times more than the money generated by the California Gold Rush. The legacy of the copper rush is still evident today in the abandoned mines, deserted settlements nestled in the forest, and the opulent buildings in the region s towns. 7 GENERAL INFORMATION PAYMENT SCHEDULE to reserve your space on the tour. For your convenience, you may charge your deposit to your American Express, Visa, Discover, or MasterCard. Final payment is due 90 days prior to departure. Credit cards are not accepted for final payment. However, personal checks are accepted for both deposits and final payment. CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS: All cancellations of confirmed fee. Additionally, passengers are subject to any cancellation fees assessed by the purveyors of services, including airlines or hotels used in the itinerary. Cancellations received days prior to departure will be assessed a penalty equal to 50% of the total program cost per person. Cancellations received within 60 days of departure are subject to 100% cancellation penalties. Requests for cancellations must be made in writing. No refunds will be made for any part of this program in which you choose not to participate. Service fees may apply to deviations and are non-refundable. INSURANCE: We highly recommend the purchase of trip cancellation insurance. An application for trip cancellation insurance will be provided by the HAA upon confirmation. The pre-existing medical conditions exclusion is waived if the insurance is purchased within 15 days of initial deposit. Neither the HAA nor the tour operator will take responsibility for any dependents or traveling companions, with regards to, but not limited to, cancellation or curtailment of the tour, emergency evacuation expenses, medical expenses, repatriation expenses, damage/theft/loss of personal baggage, money, and goods. As a service to our travelers we automatically provide emergency medical evacuation insurance. You will receive detailed coverage approximately 30 days prior to your departure. RESPONSIBILITY: Please read carefully the following terms and conditions, which constitute the sole, legally enforceable agreements between the passenger and Travel Dynamics International and the tour s sponsoring organization. The passenger is also advised to review his/her separate ticket passage contract with the vessel s owner/operator, which will constitute the sole, legally enforceable terms of carriage for this tour and is available on request from Travel Dynamics International. Travel Dynamics International and the tour s sponsoring organization act solely as agents for the passenger with respect to all transportation, hotel and other tour arrangements. In that capacity, we exercise all reasonable care possible to ensure the passenger s safety and satisfaction, but, we neither assume nor bear any responsibility or liability for any injury, death, damage, loss, accident, delay or irregularity arising in connection with the services of any ship, airplane, train, automobile, motor coach, carriage or other conveyance, or the actions of any third-party, involved in carrying the for damages, additional expenses, or any other losses due to cancellation, delay or other changes in air or other services, sickness, weather, strike, war, civil disturbances, acts or threats of terrorism, travel warnings or bans, termination or suspension of war risks or other carrier insurance, quarantine, acts of God or other causes beyond our control. All such losses must be borne by the passenger, and tour rates provide for arrangements only for the time stated. In the event of cancellation, delay or rescheduling mandated by any of the aforesaid causes beyond our control, the passenger shall have the option of accepting in lieu of the original tour such by us, or else, receiving a refund of as much of such advance tour expenditures as we are able to recover on the passenger s behalf from carriers, third-party tour vendors, etc., but, we shall not have any obligation or liability to the passenger beyond the foregoing. We reserve the right to make alterations to the tour s itinerary and to substitute hotels, ships, or lecturers if this is required. We reserve the right to cancel, delay, or reschedule any tour prior to departure, and, so long as this is not due to any of the aforesaid causes beyond our control, the passenger shall be entitled to a full refund of all monies paid to that point if he/ she so desires. No refund shall be made for any unused portion of any tour. By forwarding their deposit(s), the passenger certifies that he/she and/or their dependents, minors or others covered thereby do not have any mental, physical or other condition of disability that could create a hazard for them or other passengers. We reserve the right to decline to accept or to decline to retain any person as a member of any tour should such person s health, condition or actions adversely or impede the tour. Baggage or valuables brought on the tour shall be transported, handled or stored at the passenger s risk entirely, and, we shall bear no liability or responsibility for any damage or other loss thereto. Passenger tickets are not transferable and are not subject to alteration by the passenger. No suit shall be maintainable against the carrier, or vessel, for any losses, accidents, damages to person, property, personal injury (including death or other types of bodily injury) of the passengers, unless written notice of the claim, with full particulars, is delivered to the carrier or its agents at its office at the port of sailing or at the port of termination within six months from the day when such incident occurred. In no event shall any such suit or any claim against the carrier or vessel for any losses, accidents, damages to person, property, personal injury (including death or other types of bodily injury) of the passenger be maintainable unless such suit is commenced within one year from the day when the incident causing such losses, accidents, damages to person, property, personal injury (including death or other types of bodily injury) of the passenger occurs, notwithstanding any provision of law of any state or country to the contrary. Resolution of any disputes arising hereunder shall be brought within the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, pursuant to the applicable general maritime law, and applying the applicable general maritime law and Federal maritime statutes.
