Jackson is Jacques Barzun Professor of History at Columbia University, where he has taught since A former president of the Urban History Association, the Society of American Historians, the Organization of American Historians, and the New York Historical Society, he is the author or editor of more than twenty books and has appeared frequently on television, radio, and on more than thirty documentary films. Professor Jackson holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, honorary doctorates from four other institutions, two major teaching awards from Columbia, and both the Francis Parkman and the Bancroft Prizes for his scholarship. He has spoken before hundreds of civic associations, professional groups, historical societies, and government agencies around the nation and the world. He is a former Fulbright lecturer in Germany and Australia, and he has been a visiting professor at Princeton, Dartmouth, UCLA, and George Washington University. Professor Jackson has been teaching military history at Columbia for almost forty years. This is Professor Jackson s ninth Columbia Alumni Travel Study program and he looks forward to sharing his interpretations and knowledge of American social, urban, and military history with alumni through formal lectures and informal discussions. (Please note that a minimum number of participants is required to confirm faculty participation.) Guest Lecturer Jere Daniell, 55, recently retired after forty years of teaching history at Dartmouth. He was Valedictorian of his undergraduate class, spent three years in the US Navy, and earned his Ph.D. from Harvard in His general academic specialty is early America. His many publications concentrate on New Hampshire and include several articles on the history of Dartmouth. Jere has a long standing interest in regional subjects involving the border between United States and Canada and has lectured on previous Dartmouth cruises to the Maritimes, to Alaska, and up the Columbia River. Vistas of lighthouses on cliff tops, lush forested islands, Victorian villages and Niagara Falls combine to create a grand voyage without venturing far from home. We invite you to join Kenneth T. We board the elegant small ship, Clelia II, in Duluth and sail on Lake Superior to Thunder Bay and the Keweenaw Peninsula. After transiting the world s busiest lock system, the Soo Locks, we visit the centerpiece of our week on these vast inland seas - Mackinac Island. Horse-drawn carriages will roll us through perfectly preserved, 19 th -century lanes towards the colonnaded porch of the Grand Hotel where we will witness musket firing demonstrations at Fort Mackinac, built by the British during the American Revolution. Mackinac Island Experience the unique traditions of the Ojibwe people, who still hold their ancestral lands of Manitoulin Island, and sail through Lake Huron, past the skyline of Detroit. The monumental Welland Canal, which opened the entire Great Lakes region to intercontinental commerce, affords us time to delight in the awesome thunder and spray of Niagara Falls before concluding our voyage on Lake Ontario in vibrant Toronto, Canada s breathtaking commercial capital. Our program will be enhanced by a series of lectures and discussions led by Professor Jackson and other onboard scholars as we journey through the history of North America and of the nation building of the United States and Canada. In the good company of like-minded travelers from the University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth College and the New York Historical Society, we will admire dramatic natural wonders, amazing feats of human engineering and, perhaps, refresh childhood memories. The city has experienced a renaissance and its vibrant downtown is graced by waterfront parks and promenades. Transfer to the port to board Clelia II and sail. (D) Sunday, August 2 THUNDER BAY OLD FORT WILLIAM THUNDER BAY, On ta r i o, Ca n a d a The land around the attractive bay where Thunder Bay is sited was first settled by the French in Shortly after the American Revolution, the British established a settlement, Fort William, which flourished on the booming fur trade. This was the origin of Thunder Bay, Thunder Bay now the largest city on Lake Superior. This morning we tour Old Fort William, the impeccably restored fur-trading post and headquarters of the North West Company. Spend the afternoon exploring Thunder Bay s vibrant frontier town and cultural center. (B, L, D) Monday, August 3 HOUGHTON, Ke w e e n a w Penins u l a, Michigan s Upper Peninsula Today Clelia II will call at quaint Houghton, built on a bluff facing the channel. Keweenaw witnessed the country s first mineral rush, when vast deposits of copper were discovered in By the time the rush was over early in the 20 th century, copper had generated enormous wealth, estimated to be ten times more than the money generated by the California Gold Rush. The legacy of the copper rush is still evident today in the abandoned mines, deserted settlements nestled in the forest, and the opulent buildings in the region s towns. We will explore this historic region, an area not only rich in history, but also a place of extraordinary natural beauty. (B, L, D) Tuesday, August 4 LAKE SUPERIOR SOO LOCKS LAKE HURON LAKE MICHIGAN MACKINAC ISLAND, Mi c h i g a n Today Clelia II transits the Soo Locks, the busiest in the world, where some 12,000 ships pass annually. As we sail to Mackinac Island, enjoy breathtaking views as Clelia II sails under the Mackinac Bridge to enter Lake Michigan. Rising 552 feet above the Straits of Mackinac and five miles long, the bridge connects Michigan s Lower and Upper Peninsulas. At 8,614 feet, it is the longest two-tower suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western Hemisphere. Arrive in beautiful Mackinac Island, a Victorian-era haven where cars are forbidden and bicycles share the road with horse-drawn carriages. Explore this idyllic island and see the ancient limestone formations that were considered sacred by the Straits Indians; the impressive Fort Mackinac, built atop a high cliff by the British in 1780; and the Victorian Grand Hotel, a landmark of the island. Also enjoy time at leisure to stroll along streets lined with gingerbreadtrimmed buildings and browse in the charming shops. (B, L, D) Wednesday, August 5 LITTLE CURRENT, Manitoulin Is l a n d, On ta r i o LAKE HURON Land at Little Current, the main settlement on Manitoulin, the world s largest freshwater island and one of 30,000 islands that grace Lake Huron. Manitoulin is the home of the Wikemikong Unceded Indian Reserve, a thriving Native American community that bears the distinction of being the only tribe in Canada never to have ceded title to its land. Drive to the reserve, where a traditional Native American powwow

5 will be held, and visit the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation, whose exhibits chronicle the story of the native people of Manitoulin and the north shore of Lake Huron. (B, L, D) Thursday, August 6 AT SEA LAKE HURON LAKE ERIE Spend a relaxing day at sea as we cruise from Lake Huron to Lake Erie. Enjoy the views from deck as Clelia II makes the 106-mile transit leaving Lake Huron through the St. Clair River, into Lake St. Claire, sailing past Detroit and through the Detroit River. During this passage there is an eight-foot change in elevation between the lakes. (B, L, D) Friday, August 7 LAKE ERIE NIAGARA FALLS WELLAND CANAL PORT COLBORNE Arrive this morning at Port Colborne, where Clelia II begins the dramatic passage from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario via the Welland Canal. A series of seven locks designed as a continuous flight of stairs drops Clelia II 324 feet over a distance of 27 miles. From the decks of the ship, witness the mechanics of this engineering marvel which took over 100 years to complete. An excursion leads to Niagara Falls, one of North America s most spectacular natural wonders, where we ll see both the American Falls and Horseshoe (Canadian) Falls. 9 general information Program Inclusions Payment Schedule: A deposit of $1,000 per person is required to reserve your space on the tour. For your convenience, you may charge your deposit to your American Express, Visa, Discover, or Master- Card. Final payment is due 90 days prior to departure. Credit cards are not accepted for final payment. However, personal checks are accepted for both deposits and final payment. Cancellations & Refunds: All cancellations of confirmed reservations are subject to a $400 per person administrative fee. Additionally, passengers are subject to any cancellation fees assessed by the purveyors of services, including airlines or hotels used in the itinerary. Cancellations received days prior to departure will be assessed a penalty equal to 50% of the total program cost per person. Cancellations received within 60 days of departure are subject to 100% cancellation penalties. Requests for cancellations must be made in writing. No refunds will be made for any part of this program in which you choose not to participate. Service fees may apply to deviations and are non-refundable. Insurance: We strongly recommend the purchase of trip cancellation insurance, which is available for coverage of expenses in conjunction with cancellation due to illness or accident.
