2 Martha s Vineyard Dear Alumni and Friends: Most often, when we think of the northeastern United States, we think of great cities at the center of politics and finance and media, bustling with people buying and selling and making deals. Join us this autumn and let us take you back to an earlier time, when the pace of life was slower, when farming and fishing dominated the economy, and when people were closely in touch with the natural environment. Our journey begins on Nantucket and Martha s Vineyard. Both of these islands were early centers of the whaling industry (Moby Dick s Ahab is from Nantucket), and both have reinvented themselves as retreats for the rich and famous. We will arrive after the summer crowds have gone and will be able to wander cobblestoned streets lined with delightful shops and cafes, surrounded by well-preserved architecture of a bygone era. Back on the mainland, we ll spend a day exploring the New England ambience of the charming towns of Old Saybrook and Essex, Connecticut, before we sail around the tip of Manhattan, past the Statue of Liberty and up the Hudson River. Along the banks of this broad thoroughfare, so important to the history of America, we ll discover the Gilded Age splendor of the Rockefeller estate at Kykuit, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, and some of the Hudson River Valley s most prominent art museums. We will also visit the grounds of the United States Military Academy at West Point, whose sprawling campus has been designated a National Historic Landmark. In early October the trees in New England and New York will be turning their characteristic orange, crimson and yellow, and the banks of the Hudson will be ablaze with the vibrant colors of autumn. As we admire the spectacle that nature provides, we will be enlightened by our onboard study leader, Rice University s Professor Joseph Manca, and will also attend concerts by our accompanying trio of musicians from the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. Please join us this autumn aboard the 138-guest Yorktown on a wonderfully relaxed voyage to fascinating historic places amid splendid fall foliage. Sincerely, Onboard Enrichment Program Many of the places we visit on this voyage are ideal sites for exploration of the history of American architecture. Colonial and Greek Revival structures on Nantucket and Martha s Vineyard are complemented by Georgian and Victorian houses on the mainland and by the magnificent Federalist Boscobel House across the river from West Point. We are fortunate to have as our guide to this rich diversity of styles Professor Joseph Manca of Rice University. In addition to these lectures and discussions, we will be entertained by a trio from the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. Under the leadership of Kennith Kimery, Executive Producer, the musicians will play a series of concerts, and Mr. Kimery will provide insight into the work of artists whose lives and music have special connections with the itinerary. Study Leader Joseph Manca is the Nina J. Cullinan Professor in the Department of Art History at Rice University. Born and raised in the Hudson Valley, he received his Ph.D. at Columbia University and in 1989 joined the faculty at Rice, where he teaches courses on Early American and European art. His research focuses on 18 th - and 19 th -century American architecture, and his book, George Washington s Eye: Landscape, Architecture, and Design at Mount Vernon, will appear in the fall of 2012 (The Johns Hopkins University Press). 3 Itinerary Saturday, September 29, 2012 PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island EMBARK Fly to Providence and transfer to the pier to embark Yorktown. (D) Sunday, September 30 NANTUCKET, Massachusetts Nantucket is one of the premier destinations along the eastern seaboard, where seaside cottages and old-fashioned lamps still illuminate the streets. Named a National Historic District, the island has retained much of its 17 th -century architecture and today nearly 40 percent of the island is protected conservation land. During our day in Nantucket visit the impressive whaling museum; Hadwen House, a grand 19 th -century Greek Revival home; and the Greater Light Nantucket, Massachusetts House, built in the mid-1800s. Also, enjoy time at leisure to explore this lovely island on your own. (B, L, D) Monday, October 1 MARTHA S VINEYARD Over a century ago, Martha s Vineyard was one of the world s most important whaling centers. Today, its picturesque landscape of fishing villages and beautiful beaches is home to local, summertime, and celebrity residents. Spend the morning in Edgartown, an architectural gem of 18 th - and 19 th -century sea captains houses and other historic buildings. Visit the Vincent House, built in 1672 and the oldest residence on Martha s Vineyard, and the Old Whaling Church, built in 1843 and considered one of New England s finest examples of Greek Revival architecture. In the afternoon drive to Gay Head to view the spectacular cliffs, and the Aquinnah Cultural Center, a Wampanoag Indian homestead. (B, L, D) Tuesday, October 2 OLD SAYBROOK ESSEX OLD SAYBROOK, Connecticut Yorktown docks in delightful Old Saybrook, located on the mouth of the Connecticut River. Explore the quintessential New England town of Essex, which has been called the prettiest town in America. Historic New England churches, stone homes, and saltboxes, as well as lovely local shops, are all part of what makes Essex so charming. Enjoy a scenic ride through the Connecticut River Valley and Selden Neck State Park aboard an antique steam train. In the afternoon enjoy time at leisure in Old Saybrook, its streets lined with Victorian and Colonial houses as well as charming antique shops and art galleries. (B, L, D) Wednesday, October 3 Splendors of WestcHester County, New York After navigating Manhattan s East River, Yorktown will sail by the Statue of Liberty, and with the iconic skyline of Manhattan in full view, continue up the Hudson River to beautiful Westchester County. From our dock in Yonkers, drive to nearby Sleepy Hollow to visit Kykuit, home to four generations of Rockefellers, whose mansion and surrounding grounds are a National Trust for Historic Preservation site. Explore the impressive sculpture garden, with works by David Smith and Henry Moore, and the six-story stone mansion which houses many works of art, including beautiful tapestries by Picasso. Later, visit the Union Church, adorned with art by Matisse and Chagall. (B, L, D) Thursday, October 4 POUGHKEEPSIE HYDE PARK POUGHKEEPSIE Sailing north on the Hudson River, Yorktown will dock in Poughkeepsie for an excursion to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, built in a lovely setting, and conceived by FDR to house the many historical papers, books, and memorabilia from throughout his life. Also visit Eleanor Roosevelt s Val-Kill, a National Historic Site. Wander the bucolic grounds and visit the cottage where Eleanor lived until her death. Enjoy lunch at the renowned Culinary Institute of America

4 before continuing to Olana, home of the painter Frederick Church, who belonged to the Hudson River School. Alternatively, visit the Dia Art Foundation in Beacon, whose works include art from the 1960s to the present. (B, L, D) Friday, October 5 WEST POINT Today visit the United States Military Academy at West Point, whose campus, which consists of many historic sites and monuments, is a designated National Historic Landmark. Sitting upon a hill that overlooks the Hudson River, the expansive grounds at West Point are among the most scenic in the area. Tour many of the Academy s landmark sites, 1-Night Optional Extension in Boston Tour the principal sights of Boston. Included: One night at The Boston Park Plaza Hotel with breakfast, a half-day tour, and transfer between the hotel and pier. Lyndhurst in New York s Westchester County as well as the West Point Museum. 5 Yorktown The Yorktown is the perfect vessel for relaxed and convivial exploration of America s great coastal waterways. Built in Florida in 1988 specifically for coastal cruising and certified by the U.S. Coast Guard, the Yorktown flies the American flag and is staffed by friendly and experienced American officers and crew. 257 feet long, 43 feet wide, with a draft of 8 feet, the Yorktown is able to maneuver in secluded waterways and visit small ports that are inaccessible to larger vessels. 7 General Information Payment Schedule: A deposit of $750 per person is required to reserve your space on the tour. For your convenience, you may charge your deposit to your American Express, Visa, Discover, or MasterCard. Final payment is due 90 days prior to departure. Credit cards are not accepted for final payment. However, personal checks are accepted for both deposits and final payment. Cancellations & Refunds: All cancellations are subject to a $300 per person fee. Cancellations received days prior to departure will be assessed a penalty equal to 50% of the total program cost per person. Cancellations received within 60 days of departure are subject to 100% cancellation penalties. Insurance: We strongly suggest that you purchase travel insurance. In the event of cancellation, delay or rescheduling mandated by any of the aforesaid causes beyond our control, the passenger shall have the option of accepting in lieu of the original tour such rescheduled tour or other substituted tour(s) as may be offered by us, or else, receiving a refund of as much of such advance tour expenditures as we are able to recover on the passenger s behalf from carriers, third-party tour vendors, etc., but, we shall not have any obligation or liability to the passenger beyond the foregoing. We reserve the right to make alterations to the tour s itinerary and to substitute hotels, ships, or lecturers if this is required. We reserve the right to cancel, delay, or reschedule any tour prior to departure, and, so long as this is not due to any of the aforesaid causes beyond our control, the passenger shall be entitled to a full refund of all monies paid to that point if he/she so desires. No refund shall be made for any unused portion of any tour. By forwarding their deposit(s), the passenger certifies that he/she and/ or their dependents, minors or others covered thereby do not have any mental, physical or other condition of disability that could create a hazard for them or other passengers. We reserve the right to decline to accept or to decline to retain any person as a member of any tour should such person s health, condition or actions adversely affect or threaten the welfare or safety of other passengers or impede the tour. Baggage or valuables brought on the tour shall be transported, handled or stored at the passenger s risk entirely, and, we shall bear no liability or responsibility for any damage or other loss thereto. Passenger tickets are not transferable and are not subject to alteration by the passenger. No suit shall be maintainable against the carrier, or vessel, for any losses, accidents, damages to person, property, personal injury (including death or other types of bodily injury) of the passengers, unless written notice of the claim, with full particulars, is delivered to the carrier or its agents at its office at the port of sailing or at the port of termination within six months from the day when such incident occurred. In no event shall any such suit or any claim against the carrier or vessel for any losses, accidents, damages to person, property, personal injury (including death or other types of bodily injury) of the passenger be maintainable unless such suit is commenced within one year from the day when the incident causing such losses, accidents, damages to person, property, personal injury (including death or other types of bodily injury) of the passenger occurs, notwithstanding any provision of law of any state or country to the contrary. Resolution of any disputes arising hereunder shall be brought within the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, pursuant to the applicable general maritime law, and applying the applicable general maritime law and Federal maritime statutes.
