3 New England and the Mid-Atlantic states are home to America s most treasured cultural landmarks. Along these shores where our country was born, great art centers, historical sites, dynamic cities, and defining architecture emerged, molding the character for our fledgling nation. This spring voyage cruises along the storied waterways of the East Coast to destinations that boast a wealth of these attractions all at one of the best times of year when the weather is pleasant, and natural beauty returns to life. The journey commences in Washington, D.C., with a visit to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and George Washington s estate of Mount Vernon. We then embark on the Chesapeake Bay, home to bald eagles, long-tailed ducks, Eastern oysters, blue crabs, and the occasional dolphin and manatee, to call at genteel Annapolis. You ll sail the fabled Delaware River to historical Philadelphia, with some streets left virtually unchanged from what Thomas Jefferson and George Washington knew, on to Cape May, New Jersey, a Victorian-era resort town that remains well preserved from its 19 th -century heyday. Cruise into breathtaking New York Harbor, where the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island will greet the ship just as they have welcomed countless vessels for generations, and where the newly completed One World Trade Center stands resplendently at 1,776 feet. After a tour of New York City, including stops at its top art museums, you will round out the voyage in the charming New England enclaves of Essex, Newport, and Boston the cradle of American liberty. You will enjoy this uniquely American voyage aboard the ideal ship. Yorktown was built in the United States for cruising the coastline of the United States. It accommodates 130 guests in 65 exterior cabins and features a large sun deck, comfortable lounge, and spacious dining room offering guests the finest small-ship experience. These experts will enlighten and entertain by sharing their extensive knowledge of art, specifically the art of the Mid-Atlantic region. Aboard Yorktown, you will sail in perfect comfort from one great city or charming small town to another, with plenty of leisure time at each destination to savor an art collection, tour a historical site, or make your own discoveries. Join like-minded travelers this spring on this exceptional voyage along America s richest waterways. 4 Embark on a Uniquely American Gr Boston and Washington, D.C. In the 18 th and 19 th centuries, every traveler longed to make the Grand Tour, exploring the historic sites, great art collections, and splendid monuments of Continental Europe. Now you can make your own Grand Tour by sailing to the great art museums, the cosmopolitan cities, and the charming historic towns that lie along America s East Coast. New York. Boston. Philadelphia. Washington, D.C. For almost four centuries these cities have been renowned as places that witnessed the birth and early development of the United States, and evolved into centers of art and culture in America and for good reason. As you ll see, their museums are breathtaking. The scope of the collections at New York s Metropolitan Museum of Art is unrivaled. Philadelphia s collection of American art is one of the finest in the country, with a magnificent exhibition of works by the city s native son, Thomas Eakins. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston is an astonishing example of the refined tastes of one of 19 th -century America s most enthusiastic private collectors. And the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington is filled with room after room of masterpieces. As exciting as it is to visit the historic sites and fine art museums in big cities, many smaller towns on the East Coast have a historic character or a connection to the art world. In historic Old Lyme, Connecticut, you ll discover the Florence Griswold Museum, the birthplace of the Lyme Art Colony that became the heart of Impressionism in America. 5 and Tour between The Victorian Architecture of Cape May Visitors come to Cape May for the beaches ranked among the Top Ten in the nation by the Travel Channel and for the Victorian architecture. Cape May owes its distinctive look to a disastrous fire that swept through the town in In the rebirth that followed the fire, every new home and commercial building was built in the Victorian style. Today, Cape May has the second highest concentration of Victorian architecture in the United States (only San Francisco has more Victorian buildings). And in 1976, the entire town of Cape May was designated a National Historic Landmark the only town in the United States to enjoy such a designation. Among the stars of Cape May are the George Allen House, an elegant Italianate Victorian villa; the Stockton Cottages, with their intricate gingerbread trim; and the John B. McCreary House, with its turret and widow s walk. The Brooklyn Bridge and the skyline of lower Manhattan, New York City Maryland, has preserved all the charm of a small, 18 th -century town, while also preserving the grand 18 th -century mansion and gardens of Governor William Paca. And to walk the streets and wharves of Mystic, Connecticut, a classic whaling town, is to step into a scene right out of Herman Melville s Moby Dick. This is a remarkable opportunity to discover some of the greatest historic sites and finest art collections in America, while exploring some of the most delightful small towns on the East Coast. Join fellow travelers aboard Yorktown for a Grand Tour of America s great historic cities and art centers. [5]

(B, L, D) Day 11 GLOUCESTER DISEMBARK BOSTON FLY HOME Disembark Yorktown in Gloucester after breakfast. (B) The Chesapeake & Delaware Canal The first man to envision the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal was Augustine Herman, a 17 th -century Dutch settler, who saw such a canal between the Delaware River and Chesapeake Bay as a way to encourage economic activity in the Mid-Atlantic region and eliminate a 300-mile voyage along the coasts of Delaware and Maryland. Herman never lived to see his dream fulfilled the project wasn t begun until The original canal was 10 feet deep and 66 feet wide. It had a lock system operated by steam-powered waterwheels. Eventually, six bridges and one railroad bridge were built over the C&D Canal. In the 20 th century, the canal was expanded and improved several times, most recently in the 1970s. Today the canal is 40 feet deep and 450 feet wide. It stretches from Reedy Point on the Delaware River (41 miles south of Philadelphia) to the Chesapeake Bay. As Augustine Herman hoped, the canal is an economic blessing: it carries 40 percent of all the goods shipped in and out of the Port of Baltimore. On this voyage, Yorktown will navigate the historical C&D Canal when we sail between Annapolis and Philadelphia.
11 Frank Lloyd Wright Builds the Guggenheim Museum From the day it opened in 1959, architect Frank Lloyd Wright s Guggenheim Museum became a New York City landmark. Art collector Solomon R. Guggenheim commissioned the work to house his collection of 20 th -century art. The museum Wright designed and built was (and still is) unlike any other art museum in the world. Typical museums walk visitors through a series of adjoining galleries. At the Guggenheim, patrons take an elevator to the top of the museum and then follow a gently sloping ramp to visit self-contained galleries, or enjoy the art that is hung on the ramp s walls. Wright was working with organic forms, and took his inspiration from the natural world (it is said that the spiral pattern of a nautilus shell was the inspiration for the Guggenheim). And he chose as the site for the museum Fifth Avenue, directly across the street from Central Park as close as one can get to the natural world in Manhattan.
12 Yorktown Yorktown is the perfect vessel for relaxed and convivial exploration of America s great coastal waterways. Built in Florida in 1988 specifically for coastal cruising and certified by the U.S. Coast Guard, Yorktown flies the American flag and is staffed by friendly and experienced American officers and crew. With a draft of only nine feet, Yorktown is able to maneuver in secluded waterways and visit small ports that are inaccessible to larger vessels. And Yorktown s American registry makes it possible to operate domestic itineraries unavailable to foreign-flag ships. The ship s cuisine, served in a dining room large enough to accommodate all guests at once, emphasizes American regional culinary traditions. Accommodating only 130 guests in 65 exterior cabins, Yorktown, while not a luxury vessel, enjoys an atmosphere of warm and relaxed informality that endears it to repeat and new guests alike. Life aboard Yorktown Life aboard Yorktown is relaxed and informal, and dress is always casual. Guests discover soon after settling in that the ship s design fosters a sense of community and shared enterprise. The cabins are extremely comfortable for their size and well designed to maximize the square footage. Most have large picture windows, and each is furnished with comfortable beds, a writing desk, ample storage, a clock/radio/cd player, and a private bathroom. Your cabin is the perfect place for peace and quiet and for private rest and reflection. But you will want to spend most of your time in one of Yorktown s inviting common areas. The Lounge, never more than two decks away (Yorktown has no elevator), is the hub of shipboard activity the place to read, to converse with fellow travelers, to attend lectures and concerts, to enjoy a cocktail as the pianist performs on the ship s piano, or simply to take in unobstructed views of the passing scene. The Sun Deck affords similar opportunities to read and relax in the open air. Yorktown s inviting Dining Room [12] For reservations or information, please call us at
