PAUL BERAN, DIRECTOR OF THE OUTREACH CENTER AT HARVARD S CENTER FOR MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES, received his M.A. in Political Science and Ph.D. in International Public Policy from Northeastern University. He is a researcher, writer, and teacher on civil society in the Middle East region and the West, Middle East politics and democratization, and regional human rights and development. He has worked in public education on the Middle East region with Northeastern University, Bentley College, Teachers As Scholars, The Education Cooperative, the National Council on U.S. Arab Relations, and the University of the Middle East Project. Paul has served as a consultant on global education and development programs in Jordan, Israel, the West Bank, Egypt, Sudan, and the United States. He will be accompanied by his wife, Hilary Rantisi, director of the Middle East Initiative at Harvard s John F. Kennedy School. MONDAY, DECEMBER 31 CAIRO, EGYPT Arrive in the late afternoon and transfer to Cairo s elegant Four Seasons Hotel at the First Residence, located on the west bank of the Nile. Celebrate New Year s Eve with a festive reception at the hotel early this evening. TUESDAY, JANUARY 1 CAIRO After a morning lecture by Paul Beran, drive to Giza for a tour of the Great Pyramids, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. See the Sphinx and the Valley Temple of Chephren; then explore the Solar Boat Museum, housing the exceptionally preserved cedar boat found near the Pyramid of Khufu. Enjoy a late lunch at the legendary Mena House before returning to Cairo. The balance of the day is at leisure. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2 CAIRO This morning tour the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, whose great collection includes treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun, and stop at Tahrir Square, the now-historic center of Egypt s recent democratic movement. Then drive to Sakkara, necropolis of the Old Kingdom, for lunch and a visit to the site of the remarkable Step Pyramid of King Zoser, built in the 27th century B.C.E. Dine this evening at a popular local restaurant. THURSDAY, JANUARY 3 CAIRO Today the focus is on Coptic and Islamic Cairo as you tour the old city. Visit the Coptic Museum, the 4thcentury Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, and the Ben Ezra Synagogue, where the Geniza Documents were discovered. Continue to the Sultan Hassan Mosque, a masterpiece of Mamluk architecture. Lunch is at the restaurant in the hilltop Al-Azhar Park, with its lovely gardens and city views. This afternoon tour the Museum of Islamic Art, or you may wish to browse in the fascinating Khan el Khalili Bazaar. The evening is at leisure. FRIDAY, JANUARY 4 CAIRO / ABU SIMBEL / ASWAN, EGYPT Depart for the airport early this morning to board a private plane to Abu Simbel. See the monumental temples of Ramses II and his favorite wife, Queen Nefertari. Constructed in the 13th century B.C.E., the temples were relocated in the 1960s to save them from submersion after the building of the High Dam. Continue by air to Aswan to board the Nile Adventurer. In the late afternoon, visit the Temple of Philae, built for the goddess Isis. Dinner is on board. SATURDAY, JANUARY 5 KOM OMBO / EDFU, EGYPT Cruise to Kom Ombo, where the picturesque and unique double temple is dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus. After lunch, step ashore at Edfu to see the Temple of Horus, whose reliefs retain many of their original colors. Attend a lecture by Paul Beran at teatime, as you continue to Luxor. SUNDAY, JANUARY 6 LUXOR, EGYPT Drive to Luxor s West Bank, site of the vast necropolis of ancient Thebes. View the famed Colossi of Memnon, the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings, and the temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari. Return to Nile Adventurer for lunch. In the late afternoon discover Luxor Temple. Conclude your cruise this evening with a gala farewell dinner. Roman ruins, Jerash. MONDAY, JANUARY 7 LUXOR Disembark the Nile Adventurer for a visit to Karnak Temple to walk along an avenue of sphinxes and see the impressive Hypostyle Hall with its huge columns. Lunch is served at the historic Sofitel Winter Palace Hotel, followed by check-in. Then admire the outstanding collections at the Luxor Museum and enjoy free time in town. Dinner is at leisure. TUESDAY, JANUARY 8 LUXOR / ST. CATHERINE S MONASTERY, EGYPT / AQABA / PETRA, JORDAN This morning board a privately chartered plane to St. Catherine s Monastery, located at the foot of Mount Sinai and where it is said Moses received the Ten Commandments. Constructed by order of the Emperor Justinian, the monastery is one of the holiest places of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and its Byzantine icons and mosaics are exceptional. This afternoon fly to Aqaba, Jordan s port on the Red Sea, and continue to Petra, where lodging and dinner are arranged at the Mövenpick Resort. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9 PETRA The ancient city of Petra is astounding for its size and grandeur. Rise early this morning and enter the majestic siq, a narrow winding gorge accessible only on foot. Our first view of the magnificent ruins is of the Treasury, one of the best preserved of the many elegant structures carved into the sandstone mountains. After lunch, stop at Mount Nebo, where Moses viewed the Promised Land. Arrive in Amman and check in at the Four Seasons Hotel. Dinner is at leisure. FRIDAY, JANUARY 11 JERASH / AMMAN, JORDAN Your morning visit to Jerash will introduce one of the best-preserved cities of ancient Rome, complete with temples, theaters, and a forum.
