2 SIGMA XI &ACS Expeditions THE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH SOCIETY BETCHART EXPEDITIONS Inc Montebello Road, Cupertino, CA Dear AAAS, ACS, and Sigma Xi Members and Friends, The Greek Islands dazzling little stones in the azure Aegean, each with its own history, character, and myths. To tour them properly, in luxurious relaxation, one usually needs a wealth of both time and money. Until now. We are delighted to invite you on a remarkable Aegean cruise aboard the five-star, all-suite, 114-guest Corinthian II. With rates beginning at just $1,995 per person (double occupancy) and third- and fourth-person add-ons for $795 per person, this special eight-day itinerary has been arranged to provide an ideal amount of time to get away. We have arranged an ideal combination of guided sightseeing and leisure time. Enjoying the capacious and elegant suites of Corinthian II, you will have all the space you could desire. And, on top of all this, you will enjoy some of the most beautiful and historically resonant places in the Aegean. Cruising from Athens historic port of Piraeus, we first encounter the soaring, multihued cliffs of Santorini, undoubtedly one of the Mediterranean s most inspiring sights. Next, in Crete, we explore the magnificent Palace of Knossos, home to the legends of King Minos, Theseus, Ariadne, the Minotaur, and Daedalus and Icarus. In Rhodes, where the great Colossus once stood, explore the medieval town of the Hospitaller Knights of St. John. Call at the beach-encircled island of Kos, where Hippocrates was born, and a beautiful, terraced shrine called the Asklepeion remains to this day. Finally, visit the spectacularly preserved Greco-Roman city of Ephesus, one of the undoubted must-sees of any visit to the Aegean. Throughout this voyage, you will enjoy the many comforts of the luxurious, yacht-like Corinthian II, which offers a library, Sun Deck with Jacuzzi, and elegant lounge in addition to its traditions of fine cuisine and superior service. This is a splendid, highly unusual opportunity for you, and your friends or companions, to enjoy the sublime experience of a luxury Aegean cruise for an ideal amount of time and for a remarkably low price. We encourage you to place your reservation soon for your choice of accommodations on this relaxing voyage. Sincerely, Margaret M. Betchart President, Betchart Expeditions Inc. For AAAS Travels, ACS, and Sigma Xi Expeditions For reservations or information, please contact Carol Larsen at (800) or via at Carol@betchartexpeditions.com.
3 ITINERARY Saturday, August 12, 2006 USA Fly from the U.S. to Athens. Sunday, August 13 ATHENS, GREECE PIRAEUS EMBARK Arrive in Athens and transfer to the Corinthian II in Piraeus. Cruise this evening. (D) Monday, August 14 SANTORINI Awe-inspiring, unabashedly romantic vertiginous Santorini s sheer cliffs, the remnants of an ancient volcano, soar upward a thousand feet, striated in bands of red, purple, brown, and black rock. Take a tram ride up to the whitewashed homes, shops, cafes, and churches of Phira. Then visit the Nomikos Exhibition, where excellent reproductions of Akrotiri s Minoan frescoes are on display, as well as the Prehistoric History Museum of Thera. Also visit the classic, traditionally preserved town of Oia. (B, L, D) Tuesday, August 15 HERAKLION, CRETE KNOSSOS Surrounded by massive Venetian walls, and backed by Mount Yiouhas, Heraklion offers an impressive approach by sea. We will enjoy a morning tour of the amazing Palace of Knossos, a dancing place/ All full of turnings, that was like the admirable maze/ For fair hair d Ariadne made, by cunning Daedalus, as Ephesus Greece Aegean Athens PIRAEUS Sea Santorini Heraklion Crete Knossos Turkey Ephesus Kusadasi Kos Rhodes Homer described it. The legendary seat of King Midas and the Minotaur was excavated and reconstructed in the early 20th century. It is a monumental expanse, with ceremonial stairways, bizarre top-heavy pillars, and vibrant frescoes within a complicated maze of chambers. Also visit the Heraklion Museum. After lunch aboard ship, you may join an optional excursion to the unreconstructed Minoan palace of Phaestos and the traditional Cretan town of Voroi. (B, L, D) Wednesday, August 16 RHODES Call at the historic harbor of Rhodes, noting the columns on either side topped by statues of a deer and a fawn, where the Colossus of Rhodes once placed his feet. In the morning, take a walking tour of the walled town of the Hospitaller Knights of St. John, the Crusaders who occupied the island from the 14th century. The medieval town, with its turreted towers and Moorish minarets, appears virtually untouched more than 500 years after it was built. Also visit the superb Archaeological Museum, fashioned from the great Infirmary of the Knights with its magnificent vaulted roof. In the afternoon, you can take an optional excursion to Lindos, one of the most photogenic villages in the Greek Islands, crowned by its ancient Acropolis. (B, L, D) Thursday, August 17 KOS, GREECE In the 5th century B.C., Hippocrates, a pupil of Herodicus on the island of Kos, rejected the superstitions of his elders and began to define medical practice as a scientific discipline. Today, Kos is a veritable shrine to the man who determined, First, do no harm, and ars longa, vita brevis. Travel beyond the town for a guided tour of the Asklepeion, founded by Hippocrates followers in the 4th century B.C. in honor of the God of Healing, Asklepios. This ancient hospital is a large, terraced complex with the remains of altars, temples, and porticoes within sight of forest groves and the sea beyond. The second level features a spring that has produced fresh water for the last 2,000 years. (B, L, D) Friday, August 18 KUSADASI, TURKEY EPHESUS Take a morning excursion to Ephesus, the bestpreserved classical city on the Mediterranean an incredible, sprawling site with Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine ruins. See the iconic Library of Celsus, with its fantastic multihued marble columns, and the Great Theatre (max. cap. 25,000), where the Ephesians rioted against St. Paul. On the marble-paved Arcadian Way, street lights had been installed (around A.D. 300) to illuminate the shops, while sewer lines ran underneath. (B, L, D) Saturday, August 19 PIRAEUS DISEMBARK USA Disembark from Corinthian II in Piraeus this morning, transfer to the airport, and board return flights to the U.S. (B) TWO-NIGHT OPTIONAL PRE-CRUISE EXTENSION IN ATHENS August 10-13, 2006 An optional pre-cruise extension in Athens will be offered in conjunction with this program, including tours of the Acropolis, National Archaeological Museum, and the Agora, as well as free time to explore the city on your own. Rates: Tour costs are based upon current airfares, tariffs, and currency values. While we do everything possible to maintain the listed prices, they are subject to change. Ship s Registry: Malta CST # TDI; CST # BEI An Honest Discussion About Fuel Costs In the uncertain, often volatile oil market of late, it is difficult if not impossible to predict fuel costs over the long term, and, more specifically, at the time of operation of this voyage. Our prices are based upon the prevailing fuel rates at the time of brochure printing (usually nine months before departure). While we will do everything possible to maintain our prices, if the fuel rates increase significantly, it may be necessary to institute a fuel surcharge. If one is necessary, the total surcharge for your voyage will not exceed $180 per person. Thank you for your understanding.
