1 Page 1 Corinthian Yacht Club of Bellingham since 1986 JANUARY 2007 Vol. 22, No. 1 Notes From The Tiller by Glenn Gelhar, Commodore Happy New Year fellow Corinthians! January 2007 marks the beginning of my term as Commodore. I want to begin by thanking you members for electing me to this position. I will do my best to listen to your voices and ideas, actively support and further the Goals and Purpose of our Club and respectfully represent CYC to the outside community. I certainly want to thank our Past Commodore, Bruce Henninger, for his warmth, humor and leadership. Thanks also to our 2006 and 2007 Board Members for their time and commitment, it has been, and will be a pleasure to get to know all of them better. The Corinthian Yacht Club of Bellingham is steady with approximately 90 memberships, most of these memberships are held by couples (therefore approximately 180 members). Over this past year our membership gains have roughly matched our membership losses. We plan on printing of the 2007 Roster in February. Along with our club size, our budget has not markedly changed and no dues changes were necessary this past fiscal year. We are looking forward to some very entertaining and educational membership meetings in The Board has created an Educational Sub-Committee that has generated great ideas for upcoming topics and speakers, as well as planning other potential activities. Over the next year we hope to offer sessions on weather, fire-fighting and safety aboard, racing fundamentals, local nautical themed authors, and Coast Guard and Homeland Security presentations. We will consider organizing a repeat of the popular Lifesling Class and Women On the Water Session should we hear interest from you. It would be great to see more of our membership at our potluck meetings at the Squalicum Boathouse; please plan on joining us. At our next meeting our speakers will be from the Port of Bellingham. Marine Services Director Dan Stahl and Port Planning Director Sylvia Goodwin will be presenting. So much is happening to our waterfront, it is critical that we remain informed and involved if we want to preserve, protect and enrich our wonderful marine environment and, our community as a whole. I invite you to become more active in the CYC. If you want to get involved let me, or any of our board members know. We are looking for cruise hosts as well as membership support at our Second Annual Opening Day Swap Meet. If we have not met, please introduce yourself. I want to be open to and accessible to my fellow Corinthians. See you on the water. Commodore Glenn Contents 1... Notes From The Tiller 2... Notes from the Executive Board Meeting 2... Calendar 3... 2 Page 2 Notes from the Executive Board Meeting Tuesday, January 2, 2007 Submitted by Mel Davidson, Secretary Meeting opened: 1801hrs. Present: Commodore Glenn Gelhar, Dave Barrett, Jack Bazhaw, Don Beasley, Kaye Clevenger, Mel Davidson, Joe Davies, Bruce Henninger, Denny & Sylvia Holmstrom, Nori Yamashita. Secretary Mel Davidson s minutes of the last meeting were approved. COMMITTEE REPORTS Race: Denny Holmstrom reported he will set up and run races until about July 1, but will not be able to help in July and August. We will likely have a long (10 races) early season through the end of June and possibly schedule races for July but decide how to run them later in the season. Membership: Nori Yamashita proposed and the Board approved for membership David Klingbiel (San Juan 24 Merlin). We also gave tacit approval to a couple Nori met recently with a San Juan 27? when Nori gets the complete membership application. The unusual preliminary/tacit/quasi approval is to assure inclusion in the Roster, which Nori expects to have ready for printing soon. Administrative: Joe Davies precipitated a discussion of the January 16 general meeting presentation by Port of Bellingham s Services Director Dan Stahl and Planning Director Sylvia Goodwin, who will tell us more of the joint Bellingham City/ Port of Bellingham waterfront development plans. Cruise: Dave Barrett announced Boat Show devotees will meet in front of the Sehome Starbuck s at 8AM Saturday January 27 to carpool. The February Harbor cleanup will be March 3. There will be a Poker Run March Homeport Newsletter: Editor Jack Bazhaw observed the secretary had already noted in the minutes the deadline for January copy submission is this Saturday January 6. Jack will not be able to edit, print, address and stamp the February newsletter. We need Pagemaker proficient help or at least a team to cobble together a newsletter next month. Several folks offered to help with the grunt work, but none at the table had Pagemaker. PIYA and PHRF: The new sail measuring began last week at Bloedel- Donovan Park and will continue at another venue later. The Board approved splitting the ~$90 cost of Park facility rental with the Bellingham Yacht Club. Treasurer: Kaye Clevenger reported checking and savings account balances of $6732 and $7283, respectively. We appear to be about on track with membership income for this time of year. OLD BUSINESS There was nothing to report on the Pirates for PFDs proposal or the permanent reciprocal moorage proposal. NEW BUSINESS We welcomed Don Beasley aboard, and Glenn outlined some of the responsibilities of that office. Denny Holmstrom will handle week-to-week race operations but will not serve as Race Chairman in name. Joe Davies volunteered to be Race Chairman as well as Administrative Officer. We need a Swap Meet organizer. Meeting adjourned 1857hrs for an Education Committee meeting to follow. January 16 General Meeting 1800hrs Port of Bellingham Boathouse meeting hall. February 5 Board meeting 1800hrs Glenn Gelhar s house th St. Bellingham. 3 Racing Schedule Welcome to the CYC 2007 Racing on Bellingham Bay program. This year, we are following the tradition of CYC casual low-key racing. Likewise, we are continuing to encourage those with little experience to come out and give it a try. We invite all interested racers to participate. The schedule is as follows: Skipper s meeting April 12 th 1800 hrs at the Web Locker. First Series April 19, 26, May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, June 7, 14 & 21. This is a ten race schedule and we will eliminate one of your poorest scores excluding any cancellations. Therefore if you have to miss one race it will not hurt your scoring. Classes will be announced at the Skipper s meeting depending on the boats participating but will likely include spinnakers, cruisers and short handed. We will use the three gun/flag starting procedure, i.e. 10 minute, 5 minute and start. Timing will be by GPS. We will distribute applications by mail, on the website, or you can contact Dennis Holmstrom at If you need a rating for your boat call Rob Galbraith Cost will be $25.00 for the first series. A second series schedule will be announced at a later date. New Member Welcome Our newest member is David Klingbiel of 1083 Chuckanut, Bellingham, WA He sails a San Juan 24, Merlin. 4 Page 4 Seattle Boat Show Well it s January and that means it s Seattle Boat Show time. This is an opportunity for you to join other CYC members as we seek out the newest and the best in the boating world and enjoy some social time afterwards. We are cruising to the parking lot of Starbucks in Sehome Village at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday the 27 th. We will head on down to the boat show in Seattle where cruising with others or on your own is the plan for the day. Before heading home we ll get back together for dinner and to share our discoveries. Beware there will be a few Boat Show Shenanigans for those who wish to participate. We thought we might add a little dimension to the show by having a scavenger hunt with the winners being awarded an Island Packet 42! (The Three Stooges will deliver the boat to your slip.) We are still waiting to hear from the folks at Island Packet as to whether they will support CYC in this generous giveaway. Hope you ll join us!

Steve Clevenger, Reciprocity Chair Seeking Cruise Hosts We are looking for folks who are willing to host a cruise this year. What does being a cruise host mean? You work with the Cruise Chairs to pick a location and date and write a brief newsletter article announcing the cruise. You informally set the time and place for a potluck at the cruise location. You can plan an organized activity (scavenger hunt, games etc), but it is not required. Lots of us like to just cruise, visit with CYC members and relax. There is a budget to cover costs that you might have. Many of you have done this in the past, have your favorite cruises and may like to continue hosting these events. Whether you ve hosted before or are willing to do it for the first time, let us hear from you and we ll put you on the cruise calendar. Phone or Wendy and Dave Barrett at or wendybarr@comcast.net
