1 Page 1 Corinthian Yacht Club of Bellingham since 1986 From The Starboard Rail by Bruce Henninger, Commodore MAY 2006 Vol. 21, No. 5 WOW! Opening day has come and gone and summer sailing is just ahead! We will have our last CYC general meeting on May 16 th before our summer hiatus. It will be at the boat house as usual. As it is our tradition to have a May BBQ, we will have grills hot and ready to throw on your favorite grilling food. We will have some mustard, ketchup and relish on hand if you need them. Please bring a dish or two to share for the potluck side of this feast. We will be highlighting our cruising schedule for summer. Our speaker will be our own Gate 9 novel- ist Clyde Ford! This will prove to be a most entertaining meeting. Good food and good friends are always in the recipe for smiles. Last week as I was on my way to put in a new starting battery on Tapocketa Too, I saw a CYC member slowly hoisting a fellow member up his mast. I called out need some help? They said yes! Oh darn, I was already late for dinner, but off I went to lend a hand. It was a great time of teamwork, laughing and kidding around. Walking back up the ramp I thought of why I hollered out, and why they said yes they needed help. I knew that if it had been me that needed help they would have come running. They accepted my offer because they were comfortable with how we fellow club members act like one big sailing family. The whole purpose of CYC is summed up in our Charter, Article 11. Take the time to give it a read. To paraphrase, the purpose of the CYC is to promote, advance and encourage the sport of Corinthian and Amateur sailing, particularly in Yacht racing and cruising. Also to provide education, social cruising, develop friendships and good sportsmanship among members and the greater boat community. Well, in summation, take the time to play, teach, share and foster your fellow club members. Fly your burgee with pride and treat all sailors as family. Make as many cruises as possible, sign up to race on Thurs- Contents Continued on page From The Starboard Rail 2... Notes from the Executive Board Meeting 2... Calendar 2... 2 Page 2 Tuesday, May 2, 2006 Notes from the Executive Board Meeting Submitted by Mel Davidson, Secretary Meeting commenced at 1802hrs. Present: Commodore Bruce Henninger, Jack Bazhaw, Kaye Clevenger, Steve Clevenger, Mel Davidson, Joe Davies, Gary Eerkes, Glenn Gelhar, Rocky Goodhope, Davids Barrett & guest Larry Folenius. Minutes of the April 4 meeting (by Mel Davidson) were approved. COMMITTEE REPORTS Race: Rocky Goodhope assured us the results from the first races will soon be available. He now has the ratings for all the race fleet. The after-race Boss Tweed gatherings are going well. Reciprocal Mooring Rights: Steve Clevenger reported nothing new. Membership: Commodore Bruce informed us that a relatively new member, Richard Colyer, died in a scuba diving accident in B.C. recently. Administative Officer: Joe Davies and others reported the program for the end-of-the-season potluck/barbecue will be a discussion by Squalicum Harbor author Clyde Ford of his most recent books. Bring something to throw on the barbie for yourself and a potluck dish. Cruises: David Barrett and others confirmed the May 20 & 21 cruise to West Sound. The Matia cleanup is scheduled for June 3 & 4, but we still need cruise hosts. Homeport Newsletter: Editor Jack Bazhaw was respectfully asked by the Board to allow articles for publication up through Saturday, the 6th of this month. The Board also approved moving the Club website over the summer if Jack finds it appropriate. Treasurer: Kaye Clevenger reported balances of $4392 and $7174 in the checking and savings accounts, respectively. Calendar May 16 regular meeting May West Sound cruise June 3 4 Matia Island cleanup June Sucia I. cruise July Bedwell Harbour cruise July 29 Big Brothers/Big Sisters Day cruise w/syc OLD BUSINESS The skippers meeting at Gate 3 for the Opening Day sail event run by the Reeds and the Jones will immediately follow the BYC s 12 noon Blessing of the Fleet, Saturday, May 6. Steve Clevenger is still looking for a few more volunteers to help set up and staff the Opening Day Saturday morning Swap Meet: call him. We are distributing fliers and Commodore Bruce will attempt to place an announcement in the Bellingham Herald. Steve will check again with Mike Ensley about reserving space for seller s booths. The Commodore and Bridge are invited to the BYC s cocktail hour at 1100hrs Opening Day. Larry Folenius invited CYC members to the Squalicum YC s pancake breakfast in front of their clubhouse and adjacent to the Swap Meet. NO NEW BUSINESS Next General Meeting will be the end of the season potluck/barbecue at the Port Authority s Boathouse meeting room 1800hrs Tuesday May 16. This Board meeting, the last for the season, adjourned at 1851hrs. SYC/CYC Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Cruise July 29, 2006 This year I invite you to participate in a truly rewarding day of sailing and camaraderie while providing a valuable community service. Last year the Squalicum Yacht Club had over 60 participant s from the local Big Brothers & Big Sisters organization. This year they are expecting even more! We need skippers and their boats to help run the event and to take sailing some folks who would never get the chance otherwise. An important aspect is that the BB & BS organization has liability insurance in place to cover accidents so long as the skipper has been prudent. No worries about this in the CYC, so plan on being a part of something special!!! More details to follow soon. Glenn Yorks

3 Page 3 Reciprocity Information Semiahmoo Yacht Club: The Semiahmoo Yacht Club is celebrating their 25 th year in 2006, and is continuing extending reciprocal privileges to our Club Members. 4 Page 4 Annual Matia Island Cleanup Saturday, June 3 CYC members will pick up litter, rebuild, maintain trails, dig out English Ivy or whatever the island needs under Park Ranger supervision. Come early (maybe even Friday) and help reserve space at the dock. Some folks will anchor in Echo Bay and ferry across. We may even have a shuttle boat. Potluck on shore in the afternoon. Bring old clothes, boots and a pair of old gloves. Tools will be provided. Expect fun and a mystery contest. Call Larry Folenius at for more information. See you there! Poet s Cove/Bedwell Harbor Cruise July Plans are shaping up for the Poet s Cove cruise in July! For those of you planning to arrive on Friday, there will be a welcome gathering aboard Amphora, times and details still to be arranged. We will provide you with maps of the Poet s Cove and Beaumont Marine Park, as well as information about some of the activities available. Saturday, July 15 th, there will be a Hors D Ouerves Contest on the docks. Dig out your tastiest boat-friendly recipes for this culinary event! That evening, we invite you to visit the Pub for live music and perhaps a little dancing on sailor s legs. Sunday, weather permitting, there will be a Mountain Master s hike for those of you who are interested in stretching you legs on the trails of Mount Norman. There will also be plenty of time available for you to visit, explore and take in activities on your own. We are really excited about this cruise and hope you will join us! We have received marina reservations from several of you and have heard from others who plan to join this cruise and anchor out. Poet s Cove Marina would like to have a good sense of our numbers by the first week in June, so please get back to us ASAP if you want a slip. Reservation forms and information will be available at our May meeting OR you can call or . (360) or wendybarr@comcast.net Remember that you need to be able to clear Customs when you arrive in Bedwell Harbor, so you ll need to have your paperwork in order ahead of time. Dave and Wendy Barrett, Poet s Cove Cruse Hosts Continued from page 1 days if you can. Have fun, for we are very blessed to have such a playground in our own back yard! Treat our bay and the Islands with care, and we will be enjoying them for many generations. When you are out this season, visiting our reciprocal moorages clubs, take the time to be very thankful to the hosting clubs. Carry some cards with you and write a note to leave, or stamp it and drop it in the mail. Let s thank these clubs for sharing their docks and slips. This will pay big dividends in the future. If you find the moorage is full, thank them anyway! After this months meeting and BBQ on the 16 th, our next land meeting will be September 19 th at the boat house. Boy, what stories we will tell of our Summer adventures on the water!! Gently making time on the starboard rail, Commodore Bruce

5 Help!!!! Cruise Host Needed Page 5 We are really in need of someone(s) to host a September cruise. Date and location are negotiable. Last year the September cruise was to Anacortes, allowing those who wanted to drive to attend. You could again consider a drive to location such as Anacortes, La Conner or Blaine or go with other locations that are not already cruise destinations this year. We would really like to continue the tradition of holding a cruise in September, but will not be able to do so without a host. If you are interested and able, please contact Wendy and Dave Barrett at (360) or wendybarr@comcast.net West Sound Cruise We hope everyone can arrive by 1400 (2:00PM) on the 20th of May. We re planning a surprise game that should be fun as well as educational about 1500 (3:00PM). Be prepared for the unexpected. Strange things have been known to happen in Massacre Bay & Skull Island! After the game about 1700 (5:00PM) there will be a dinghy raft-up & float trip. Bring your favorite hors d oeuvre to share & favorite beverage to sip. See you all behind Double Island. Susan Plumb

With these, you will have about one hour to construct a working sailboat. After completion you will race your creation at a time and place designated by the Race Committee. For those of you, who would like to use last year s boat to compete you must add the mystery item that will be provided to you upon arrival.
