1 1 JUNE 2013 Commodore s Report David Morton I am writing this month's article sitting at the club looking out at a beautiful Friday afternoon. While I'm stuck upstairs writing, others are busy working downstairs preparing for the year's first Dock Friday. In keeping with PSYC tradition, Brad Byrd arranged for near perfect weather. There is definitely something magical about being here at the club on a warm spring day. The seaplanes are taking off, laughter drifts up from the deck and the whole area is abuzz with activity. May has been a month of activity here at the club. We started the month at full speed with a fantastic Opening Day. While we didn't take home any prizes, the weather, food and celebration were perfect. If you didn't join us this year, you really missed out. Mark your calendars now so you won't make the same mistake next year. Between board meetings, general meetings and other official duties this month, I was fortunate enough to join member Larry O'Keefe in Anacortes for Trawler Fest. Larry had arranged to write a review of the new the Greenline 40 hybrid yacht for Passage Maker magazine. You can look for his review (and maybe some of my pictures) in an upcoming issue. It was a great time and I hope to get Larry to give us a report at an upcoming meeting. Next up was the Memorial Day Cruise to Everett. This cruise was aptly named (or timed) because it was a memorable one. While the weather was nothing special, everything else about the cruise was. The cruise captains, including the Kruegers, Ellingsons, Adams and Orr's put together a fantastic cruise that was packed full of fun, food and activity. They were expecting up to 90 people to attend by boat or by car. I particularly enjoyed the holey board tournament (I lost to Bill Allen in the semi- final round). I believe that Neil Krueger took home the big payday and Bill earned $11 for his second place finish. After holey board was the PSYC Olympics. The day ended with dinner on the dock. The next day was soggy be we all had a good time and another great dinner. This cruise was one of the largest in recent memory. It reminds me of pictures of old Hat Island cruises from the 1950s. Those big cruises help cement our club's reputation as an active cruising club. We even made it to the cover of the June 1955 issue of Sea Magazine. I have included a photo of this cover elsewhere in this issue of Soundwaves. It is worth a look. This is really a great club. We have great people, a rich history and unlimited potential. As June roles around, we begin to take nominations for our next group of leaders. There are a lot of positions up for election this year. Having made it halfway through my year as Commodore, I can highly recommend this as way to give back to the club. Whether you run for an open board position or one of the Bridge positions, I can guarantee that you will find it a challenging and rewarding experience. Take a look at the open positions and if you are at all interested, please let Peggy Allen know. 2 2 Vice Commodore s Report Mike Thompson Hello Fellow Members, Boy Oh Boy, have we had fun the last week. I know I am off topic as the Vice Commodore,but I have to say GOOD JOB. The Memorial Day Cruise was a blast. Scuttlebutt s for Friday dinner and drinks was great. I have been in the area many times but never eaten there. I will go back soon. The cruise captains had games and most of the time the weather held out. The ham dinner was to die for and that is the first time when we were counting the people that did not come instead of the people coming to the cruise! Last night was the first dock Friday, Bradley and Helen put on a good spread! The weather was warm and we had about 30 people and 40 cupcakes as it was Bradley's birthday. Happy birthday, Bradley! Now for my Vice Commodore's report, I replaced the wheels to the dock cart and you can fill it up now and the wheels won't waddle. We had a flood in the women bathroom from the sink on the right. Garry Moore and I looked it over and found nothing wrong with it. Pat said she came in at 12:00 a.m. and I did say 12:00 a.m. and the water was running in the sink. I think somebody left it on and it overflowed the sink and onto the floor. We do need to replace the plumbing under the sink as it is almost past it's life. Mike Thompson 2013 Vice Commodore Rear Commodore s Report Bradley Byrd Hello Everyone, It s hard to believe it is already June! Opening Day seems like it just happened and things have only sped up since then. Helen and I were all set to join the cruise to Everett, but then illness and work both rudely intruded on our plans. From the glowing reports, we really missed out on an event to remember. (Thanks, Joyce, for the pictures on page 5)! The Cruises just keep coming I m impressed that there are already fourteen boats signed up for the Port Ludlow Cruise. Again, I will have to miss that one, since we ll be out of town that week. The weather cooperated wonderfully for our first Dock Friday of the year. We had a great turnout and plenty of good eats. If you missed it, contact Pat Hanson to get her Peanut Butter Sirloin Burger recipe sometime. Sounds crazy, but those who tried it liked it! It s great to see new people showing up at the club. I have had the pleasure of meeting several new prospective members, and it looks like they are going to be joining us soon. We all benefit when new members join, and just being ur natural friendly selves is the best way to achieve that. You ve all heard of the Summer Solstice and the crazy shenanigans at Fremont, but have you heard of the Summer Sailstice? That s an event every year where sailors attempt to convert landlubbers and power boaters to the joys of sailing. This year, in conjunction with the Sailstice, there is a Beneteau Regatta/fun race in Elliot Bay on June 22. If you are interested in crewing on a saiboat, let me know. It should be a good party afterwards. So once you are finished with the Fremont parade, wipe that body paint off, put on some clothes, and come on out to sail and party! Trina Smith has been sending me the Holland America Friends and Family special rates for their cruises. I m looking for one that fits with our schedule to see if we can make it a GAFIA (Get Away From It All) cruise. Stay tuned. Be safe out there, Bradley Byrd

3 3 Fleet Captain s Report Joyce Carlson MEMORIAL DAY/EVERETT CRUISE Another Great Cruise!! This long weekend was filled with activities filled throughout and the weather for the most part was complimentary. Our Cruise Captains worked very hard to make this fun and action packed for everyone starting with greetings - glad you re here to giving your PVC marsh mellow gun with your ammo consisting of a package of marsh mellows for Saturday s Olympics. Friday night most of us went to the Scuttlebutt Brewing Company where we filled our designated room two or three times. Saturday brought us the Holey Boards and the Olympics and the competition was stiff. Sunday took those interested to the casino where most everyone (gasp!) lost! A few of the smarter ones went shopping or played golf. Food was immense, varied and ended with huge baked potatoes, steak, ice cream and Vicky s now famous snicker doodle cookies. There were many Captains for this cruise as attendance was large which makes for much work. 4 4 Fleet Captain s Report Con t Joyce Carlson GOLF TOURNAMENT Port Ludlow June 7 9 This upcoming weekend brings us the Golf Tournament at Port Ludlow. This has been an annual event for the past several years. Our Cruise Captains are likely hoping for the sun! Would be helpful! For anyone not playing golf you can always wax your boat! (Maybe too much work.) Last year s attempt was a bust as the weather was prohibitive with rain and wind So the same group that tried it last year moved this cruise to July this year. Thinking there will be sun and fun, this will be a relaxing cruise to just cruise, shop and enjoy each other s company. Planning is in the works. MARINA RESERVATIONS Arabella s Landing A great marina at Gig, we have fifteen (15) slips reserved. 8 8 PSYC 2014 Bridge and Board Nominations The PSYC nomination process begins in June for 2014 Bridge and Board positions. The positions to fill are: Rear Commodore, Fleet Captain, Treasurer, and four trustee positions. (It is customary that the current Vice and Rear Commodores move up through the chairs.) The qualifications and duties of each office can be found in the PSYC By- laws and Procedures manual on our website. To be eligible a candidate must be an active (boat- owning) member in good standing. Each year PSYC strives to obtain members who are interested in serving the Club as an officer and/or Trustee. We have a lot of great folks in this club who have a lot to offer in a leadership role.
