1 June 2010 Commodore s Report - Paula Spina Well, I for one am still basking in the glow from the Poulsbo Viking Days Wagon Wheel Anchor Out cruise (wow, what a mouthful that was). Our cruises are always a lot of fun, good companion and seamanship, but this cruise was a total blast. I've never been part of a wagon wheel anchorage before, and didn't really know what to expect. What I know now is that I want to do it again. Everyone who attended loved it. I'll let Fleet Captain Rich talk all about our pillage of Poulsbo, but I do want to personally, and on behalf of the Club, thank our cruise captains and corner boats: Michael and Lisa Haistings, Gary and Donna Sheneman, Rich Tremaglio and Echo Summers, Patrick Kolanda, Tim Dies, and Richard and Deborah Kelleher. Putting this together wasn't easy. Getting the wagon wheel in place was especially difficult, but they pulled it off. And yes Virginia, it really was a circle. Ya betcha when we do it next year you'll wanna be there. And what about those T-shirts? I'm writing this report in advance of the Memorial Day holiday, so I can't report on either the Memorial Day cruise to Everett or the "impromptu" cruise to Hat Island. I can tell you that our friends at Hat, especially Barb and Chuck, have been doing their best to make us feel welcome recently. So we want to make sure we all reciprocate. Our Hat Island Representative, Joyce Carlson, has been doing a fantastic job on this front. She recently sent out an explaining our Hat usage procedures and reservation system. If you plan on using Hat please make sure you have your sticker and make a float plan. You can do that on line or by calling Joyce. Except for the Hat Island Golf cruise in June--for that cruise you need to make your reservations directly with Cruise Captain Jerry Zitkovitch. Also, John Orr will be heading up two work parties in June to fix our Hat finger piers. John can still use some more help, so give him a call if you're able. Have you sent in your recipes yet? By the time you read this it'll probably be too late. I know the cookbook committee has been working hard with the June 4th submission deadline and potluck dinner close on the horizon. Having managed a sneak peek of a few of the recipes submitted, I can't wait to sample them. Can't wait for the cookbooks either. Guess what I'll be giving out for Christmas this year. Finally, I have to say I am astonished at the attendance at our General Meetings lately. Our Membership Committee has been doing a fantastic job bringing in new members. Thanks Judy, Trina and Sharon. Linda has been doing a tremendous job as Galley Chair and our dinners rock. Everybody seems to be having a good time. So much so that pretty soon the Bridge is going to have to eat dinner on the Bridge. Please remember though-- make your dinner reservations; it really helps the dinner crew. And that's all she wrote this month. 2 Page 2 June 2010 Vice Commodore s Report - Bill Dils WOW Cruising season is officially here and I hope soon so will Summer. Opening Day, Cruises, Work Parties, socials - all attended with as much enthusiasm and passion as the last and the next to come. The front lawn is in, along with sprinklers, hedges and rocks (Looks great). A big thank you to all that helped during the work party and the crew who came back and finished the project: Patrick Kolanda, Bill Traver, Mark Eagen, Mike/Mad Dog Thompson, Judy Martinson, Tim Dies, Karl Harris and Norm Grossman. I hope I did not miss anyone. John Orr is leading the repairs at Hat Island! Between Wednesday, June 9 th and Sunday, June 13 th, the dock at Hat Island is going to be repaired. John needs a couple more helpers. Please contact John Orr, Joyce Carlson or Bill Dils. See Joyce Carlson s report later in this edition for the details. On a personal note; Susan and I have a new boat, The SueSea a Bayliner. We should be back on the water by the end of June. Safe boating to you all and may the sun shine on you always! Please remember to make your dinner reservations for the monthly General Meeting. You can either go to: or Call Linda Egan or Susan Dils at
3 Page 3 June 2010 Rear Commodore s Report - Peggy Allen Whoosh! Where did May go? Oh well it was a great and memorable month. It rained a lot, but that s good, right? Oh and the boat tabs are due again, now that came fast. Opening Day 2010 is well behind us. As reported in the May Sound Waves it was a great success. This is the event that lets us celebrate our club and reminds the rest of the boating community that just what a great club we have. In talking with members of other clubs I often heard how impressed they were with the strength of PSYC. The Viking Days Wagon Wheel in Poulsbo cruise was over the top! Building the wagon wheel took a great deal of research and planning. I m sure our Fleet Captain, Rich, will have all the detail in his report. The dingy potluck and the dingy parade in our Viking attire really set the mark. There are loads of pictures and in this digital age no negatives to destroy! Although there wasn t an official Memorial Day cruise several members spent the week-end at Hat Island. Mother Nature didn t give us great weather, but that never stops the rugged souls of PSYC. Coming up this month is the Cigar and Rye night. There will be smoking and rye tasting and lots of great fun. If I have my facts straight this is the second annual event. And as was the case last year a sumptuous meal will be served. This is an event not to be missed. Smoking and rye drinking are not required. Eating though, eating is good. Puget Sound Yacht Club Galley Gourmet Cook Book Gary Sheneman submitted this winning entry for the name of the cook book. There were so many great names submitted, we should use them on our next editions. The prize for the cover design goes to Jane Vukonich, David and Nancy Morton, and Jodie Paine. They all submitted similar designs using photographs of PSYC icons. The cover will be a collage of those pictures. We intend to find a way to use the other cover entries in sections of the book. There have been nearly 300 recipes submitted by 64 members and former members. We have more than met our goal of 250 recipes and we did it by June 1. The selection of recipes is pretty evenly spread across the recipe categories. Well done everyone! To celebrate, The Galley Gourmet potluck was held on June 4. The idea was to share and sample some of the recipes that will be in the book. The over twenty recipes that were shared were fantastic! I can t wait to try the rest of them. The Galley Gourmet presale will begin at the June meeting and continue until the book goes to press in July. The price for presale will be $10 per book, after that the book will be sold for $12. The books will be here in September. This is your chance to get your order in for Christmas gifts! Here s wishing you all a wonderful June. Summer officially starts in a few months and the days are long. Get out and enjoy yourselves!
4 Page 4 June 2010 Fleet Captain Report - Rich Tremaglio WOW! That s about what needs to be said. There is a lot going on from the cruise perspective right now. To start with, if you weren t there you missed out on the Poulsbo Viking Fest Anchor-out! By now you have probably heard about it, but if not we had 19 boats anchor out in a wagon wheel. The inner diameter of the wheel was over 100 feet an area in which we moored the dinghies and had appetizers by boat and water fights and rum drinks and generally acted like Vikings. Our dinghy armada, manned by Vikings in full dress stormed the docks in Poulsbo and generally caused a scene. Bill Allen won best costume and was rewarded handsomely. Instead of buying food, since we didn t have anywhere to serve it, we had cruise shirts made up for the cruise participants watch for them being worn at a yacht club near you Many, many thanks go out to out the crews of the four anchor boats that arrived early and set the wheel and then spent hours acting as tugs helping get all the boats into place safely Patrick Kolanda, Tim Dies with Richard and Deborah Kelleher, Michael and Lisa Haistings, and thank you to Kevin Haistings for helping me out on Veja-Du as well. Kudos go to our cruise captains Michael and Lisa Haistings and Gary and Donna Sheneman for the hours of work that went into researching exactly how to pull this off. I had many long-time PSYC members tell me that a wagon wheel had never been done before, and at least one proclaim: this was the best cruise ever We then had a Memorial Day cruise. As no one volunteered to Captain, it wasn t official, but we did have the dock at Everett reserved all of it and both boats, the Haistings (Dreamcatcher) and the Haistings (Legasea), enjoyed it. The next cruise is Hat Island, June Jerry and Colleen Zitkovich are your cruise captains. For this event at Hat Island, please coordinate moorage through Jerry as opposed to via the website, as Jerry will be developing the Moorage plan. After that on the summer slate is Vacation Connection at Port Townsend Point Hudson Marina. While this cruise takes place the weekend of July 23 25, we are required to submit a moorage plane to the Port no later than June 11. Right now I have 14 boats signed up if you have signed up at a meeting or have sent me an , I ll be contacting you early next week to confirm attendance. If you have not yet signed up I need to know ASAP if you want to go. Please contact me by phone. At the cruise we will be having a salmon and a crab derby. Stand by for more detains as they come available. Hope to see you all out cruising! 5 Page 5 June 2010 Galley Corner Hi everyone! Chris Kullman and Crew served a beautiful dinner at May s General meeting that consisted of Mexican cuisine to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. What a feast! Kathy Ornelas brought Mexican brownies for those with sweet tooth s. I would like to thank everyone who helped out with the Galley for May s General Meeting: Chris Kullman Chief Chef he made those burritos all by himself Kathy Ornelas for baking those delicious brownies Neil Krueger and Mark Eagen they rolled up their sleeves and helped Chris in the kitchen Vicky Orr, Marilyn Sullivan, Nancy Morton and Mary Adkins for cleaning our galley spic and span after dinner We had a great turnout of 94 members who came to dinner last month! The only thing that would be better is if we knew how many meals we need to plan for. With only 70 reservations the concern is we could exhaust our food supply before everyone was served. That would be bad! So please don t forget to make your reservations. In fact, you could do it right now while you re thinking about it! Reservations are requested no later than Monday morning preceding the General Meeting because time is needed to purchase and prepare food. Reservations made on Tuesday or the day of the meeting are not counted in the food count because we need to move forward on preparing dinner for the meeting. Next month I will be working with Kathy Ornelas, Sumol Thomas and Kathleen Thompson. THANKS to all of you for making your reservations timely before the meeting! Remember dinner is now served at 6:00 p.m.!! Happy Hour starts at 5:00 p.m. Bon Appetit! Linda Eagen, Galley Chair 2010

7 Page 7 June 2010 HAT ISLAND OUTSTATION ** Important Notice Hat Island Usage * Hi everyone! On May 17 th you were advised that all moorage space available at Hat Island had been reserved for Memorial Day weekend and that no further reservations could be accepted. However a waitlist was available for those who may like to be able to go in the event there was a cancellation/ opening and the next boat in line could fit into the moorage space available. I also spoke on this topic at the last General Meeting. Some questions/topics have arisen from that and I would like to clarify for everyone: The question arose s to why we could accommodate more than eleven (11) boats. The thought being that since we have eleven (11) slips, Hat could only accommodate eleven (11) boats. Because our docks at Hat Island are a mix of finger piers and linear footage, and depending upon the sizes of the boats (and timing of the reservation) there will be times where we can accommodate more than eleven (11) boats, and there will be times at Hat where we will accommodate less than eleven (11) boats. The question arose as to the definition of first come/first serve for reservations. Reservations are based on the date and time received within our website. If a number of members have signed up for the same dates, taking the first boat who signed up we move forward until all dock space has been used and then the reservations will need to be closed. This caused another question when there were numerous reservations of varying boat sizes. If for example there was 40 feet left and there were several boats remaining with reservations if the next boat in line was 25 feet, followed by a boat of 35 feet the 25 footer would be assigned the dock space and there would be 15 feet of unused space based on first come/first serve or the date and time the reservation was made. Any reservations that cannot be met will be placed on a waiting list. The website s Float Plans (on-line reservations system) will continuously be monitored to ensure that we, as a Club, only use PSYC dock space. When necessary, slip assignments will apply. Consideration will be given to members with medical conditions/disabilities and to the smaller boats to try and place them in spots where they re boats are not in the bouncy waters where possible. Members are asked to park/moor in their assigned slips or they will have to be asked to move. It s not fun to have to turn members away, nor is it desirable to ruin members boating plans. Therefore, when Hat is full, please do not go to Hat if you don t have reservations. You would have to be turned away. As stated previously, rafting is not permitted (including Caribbean ties ) unless the cruise is a Club sponsored cruise (published in the Roster) such as the Golf Tournament coming up in mid-june. In addition to the foregoing when there is a Club sponsored cruise it is requested the Cruise Captain(s) be contacted directly. The Cruise Captains are responsible for working with Hat Island Officials covering moorage as PSYC has access to the entire marina and slip assignments are managed differently. If any member has any questions or problems concerning the use of the website and making on-line reservations please contact me directly and I will be glad to help you. For members who do not have on-line access I will be glad to make reservations for anyone. In respect to your personal website profile please make sure it is complete. Particularly your vessel s name, size, etc. The reason for this your boat data serves as the measurement for making reservations and is reflected on-line. (It also ensures that the Roster has the most current information.) We are trying to manage our asset in the best way in the interest of all concerned. Every effort is being made to be fair to everyone who would like to use our Hat Island docks. We are working/communicating with Hat Island Officials continuously and they are doing the same. If we all work together (PSYC members/hat Island Officials) we can look forward to enjoyable experiences at Hat. If anyone has any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Have a safe and happy boating season! Joyce Carlson, Past Commodore Hat Island Representative 2010
