PRE-CAMP INFORMATION PACK COORDINATORS Your Pack's Day Camp Coordinator is responsible for all communications between Day Camp and the pack, so it is very important for us to know who the pack coordinator is at all times. If the pack s coordinator changes, please call your registrar (see inside front cover) with that information. Coordinators should be aware that all leaders - with the exception of Den Chiefs - must be 18 years old. All youth under 18 must be registered members of the BSA. This means neither girls under 18 (except BSA Venturers) nor younger siblings may be on camp property. It is recommended that there be 1 ADULT LEADER FOR EVERY 5 SCOUTS. There must be 2 adult leaders with a group at all times, no matter how few scouts a pack might have. WALKING GROUPS Our areas can handle up to 16 scouts at one time. If your Pack is larger than this you may be asked to divide them into smaller groups to stay in line with this number. Be sure to have in mind how you want to divide the pack if necessary. You may choose to divide along den lines, or the Wolf, Bear line - whatever way you choose HEALTH FORMS DO NOT SEND HEALTH FORMS TO THE COUNCIL OFFICE You will need sections A & B. The link below will get you a copy of the current form. Each and every person, whatever age, must have a completed health form on file to be allowed to remain in camp. This includes Cubs, Den Chiefs, Walking Leaders, participants and Staff. Before health forms are turned in, the Pack Coordinators should check to make sure it is complete. Every question should have an answer, even if the answer is not applicable. The form must be signed, giving permission to treat, even if it is for an adult. Take note of all health information and inform all walking leaders if there is a health problem. Please be sure sections A & B on the form are included and signed and that a photocopy of an insurance card is attached. Health forms are to be returned to the registrar at Roundtable on May 1st sooner if possible. If you are waiting for one or two scouts, turn them in anyway and add the others later. Your registrar's name, address and telephone number is: Susan Dallstream 692 W 93 rd St Richmond, MO Health form: 6

Following is a SAMPLE LETTER TO PARENTS to inform them of pack rules and regulations, and a SAMPLE PERMISSION SLIP. The parent's letter and permission slip is only a guideline for your use. PARENTS NOTE Dear Parents: Day Camp is just around the corner and I know your son is looking forward to four days of fun and adventure. So that camp will be a time to remember, I would like to share some thoughts with you. 1. We will leave each day from at. We will return around pm at. If your son cannot attend camp on any day, please call. The camp emergency phone number is Be aware that this is to be used ONLY for emergencies. Call the Coordinator first at Be sure your son's health form has been completed, signed and returned to me by / /. 2. Your son will need to bring daily: a. 1 re-useable water bottle b. Whatever the weather, your son will get wet during the activities at camp, so please consider sending a towel and/or dry clothes. 3. Camp uniform will consist of the Day Camp T-shirt, jeans or shorts, sturdy shoes (tennis shoes) and socks. NO SANDALS. Since we will be in the sun, you may want to send a hat. Be SURE your son's name and our pack number is on all items that can be separated from him. 4. ABSOLUTELY NO KNIVES OR WATER GUNS!!!! 5. Rain gear should be sent upon need. A garbage bag makes a great disposable raincoat. It is your decision whether or not your son attends camp on rainy days - camp will not be canceled due to rain. 6. Any medication should be sent to camp with a walking leader, along with written instructions in the original prescription bottle. The medication should be dispensed by the walking leader. The camp nurse should be aware of the medicine. 7. A list of achievements that your son has earned at camp will be sent home for you to record in his book at the end of Day Camp. 8. There will be items for sale at the Trading Post, so you might want to send some money for purchases. The Trading Post will be open daily. 7

9. Your son will be in the GREAT OUTDOORS all day and might come in contact with poison ivy. You may want him to bathe immediately upon arriving home using Fels Naptha Soap, which is best for removing ivy oils. Washing his clothes immediately also prevents ivy from spreading. 10. Check for chigger bites and ticks daily. Have him bathe with ½ cup of bleach added to his bath water. Spray him with bug repellent each morning thoroughly around tight places in clothing (socks, waistbands, etc.) 11. If for any reason your child must be picked up at camp by you or someone you designate, a signed note from home must be sent the morning (or earlier) of the event. Please identify who will be picking up the child and at what time. (Arrangements must be made with the pack for the details of the pick up.) The person (even if it is a parent) will be asked to present picture identification to the camp staff before your child is released. 12. Any child repeatedly causing problems will be sent home. With your help and cooperation, Day Camp will be a fun experience he will always remember. Pack Day Camp Coordinator phone Pack Walking Leader phone 8

AT CAMP DAILY ATTENDANCE SHEETS These sheets are available at: There are two types of daily attendance sheets, one for the adults and Den Chiefs and one for scouts that plan on being in camp at any time. You need 5 copies of the scout sheet and 5 of the adult/den Chief sheet. This allows you to keep one for your record. On the scout s Daily Attendance Sheets list each scout alphabetically. A column will allow you to mark each scout s attendance for each day of the week s/he is at camp. The adult/den Chief form will need to be completed listing each adult and Den Chief alphabetically. Mark their attendance daily in the appropriate box. Do NOT list a Day Camp staff member or a Youth Staff member on your roster unless they are actually walking with the unit sometime during the week. Do NOT indicate what days that you expect the adults to be attending camp. Use the daily copies to indicate what adult is in camp on that day. DAILY CHECK-IN After unloading from your vehicles and before opening flag, turn in your daily attendance sheet copy to the registrar at the administration tent indicating which scouts or adults are in attendance on any particular day and the reason for the absence of any scout. Everyone in camp must be on the check-in sheet. These check-in sheets must be turned in as a pack - not by den or walking group. You will receive colored bracelets for every adult and Den Chief who is authorized to be in camp that day. The bracelet must be worn all day. You will be asked why scouts are not attending as a check to make sure there is no child missing who is expected at camp. You should call parents if a scout does not show up to confirm s/he won t be there during the day. 12

VERY IMPORTANT LATE ARRIVALS Any camper arriving in camp late (after opening flag) must check in at administration to be added to the pack's daily check in sheet. Do not mark them in the morning if they are not there. Two adults will need to meet the scout at administration and take him to the pack. Parents will not be able to take children to the packs location as they must have a health form on file to be on site and we still follow youth protection guidelines. EARLY RELEASE PROCEDURES Every camper leaving camp early must have a signed note from their parent on file with registration. A separate note will be required for each day. This note must contain the time the scout is expected to leave and who will be picking them up. You will find the early release form on page 36 of this guide or extra copies will be at registration, please complete the top portion and turn this note in with your morning paperwork. When the scout is ready to leave: The walking leader from the pack will escort the scout to the administration tent for pick up. Remember per youth protection standards two adults will need to walk with the scout. The person picking up the scout will be asked to present a photo ID before the scout will be allowed to leave camp. This rule will apply to everyone including parents. An early release form will need to be completed and signed by the Walking Leader and Camp Director. These procedures are set by Council and we cannot make exceptions. Please understand that these rules are for the safety of our scouts. Remember that we don't know your parents and these rules are to ensure the safety of all our young scouts, so please, cooperate with our staff. Please Note: Releases will be processed until 1 hour prior to closing. If the scout must leave within that time period before closing, please schedule it before so that staff can concentrate on closing activities. 13

Sweatshirt or jacket when needed (Keep at camp all week). NO SANDALS or WHEELED SHOES for your safety. We are asking that Packs do NOT put the names of the Scouts permanently on the shirts. This is for safety of the Cubs while away from Camp. Removable name-tags are highly recommended. Please remember that the Cubs and Scouts are impressionable. Anyone wearing inappropriate attire will be asked to leave or purchase a shirt at the trading post. Cub Scout Day Camp is absolutely not the place for tank-tops, short shorts or muscle shirts. LOOK FOR SUNSHINE - BE PREPARED FOR RAIN No wind, nor hail, nor rain will dampen our spirits. Camp is rarely canceled due to rain. Just bring your rain gear and continue as scheduled. Trash bags make great disposable ponchos. Warning... if the rain don't get you wet - we will!! You might ask parents to send a towel and/or dry clothes for the trip home. Many scouts appreciate a second set of dry socks. WOODSY OWL SAYS: GIVE A HOOT, DON'T POLLUTE It's your camp - be proud of it!! Help keep it clean. Please teach children that a Scout always leaves camp better than s/he found it. Empty your campsite of trash before leaving each night. The trash dumpster located on the property is for camp use only. Do not put your campsite decorations in the dumpster. These decorations must be taken home after the close of camp. 15

TRANSPORTATION For your protection, we strongly advise you to have a written permission slip for each scout, signed by the parent(s). It should inform the parents of the mode of transportation to and from camp. National policy states: "Every scout MUST have a seat, and wear a seat belt". Also, please be mindful of passenger air bags. The transportation of scouts in the bed of a pickup truck is prohibited. LOST AND FOUND Any articles found not belonging to you, please return to administration. If you have lost any articles, check at administration. We will not be responsible for any misplaced items!! Be sure to mark names and pack # on everything that can be separated from the scouts. TRADING POST The trading post will be open daily. You may visit during any free time. A vast number of items are available including shirts, day camp mugs, and flashlights, just to name a few! OPENING AND CLOSING CEREMONIES Dens are offered the opportunity of conducting either an opening or closing flag ceremony for the camp. Sunday before camp begins, if you wish to participate, a representative from your pack will be given the chance to sign your group up on a signup sheet at the administration tent. Sign up will be handled on a first come, first serve basis. The proper instructions for presenting and retiring the colors can be found on page 18 of this booklet. Administration will also provide the flag ceremony commands in large print at the flagpole. If you have any questions, please ask at administration, we will be happy to help. Important updated announcements will be given at opening/closing ceremonies and noontime surprise. Please be sure your group is present at each daily ceremony. LUNCHTIME Each person will be responsible for bringing his or her own lunch. Adult leaders are asked to bring a cooler(s) with plenty of ice to keep the group s lunches cold. Remember cold air drops, so put lunches on the bottom and ice on the top (Lunches placed in large individual labeled Zip locked bags work great). Please remember, no mayonnaise, fish or other items that will spoil easily. DON'T FORGET your lunchtime drink!! 16

CAMPSITE COOKING No fires are allowed at den homes. Please bring lunches that do not require cooking. CAMP SPIRIT YELL We've got the spirit and we want you to have it too! The Spirit yell will be: WE'VE GOT SPIRIT, YES WE DO! WE'VE GOT SPIRIT, HOW 'BOUT YOU!!! PACK YELL AND SONG Make up a simple pack yell and song to yell and sing along the way! An example of a yell might be - one, two, three we're the best that we can be, Pack! Whatever your Cubs come up with... let us hear you throughout camp! PACK FLAG Who are you? Let the scouts pick a name for the group and then make a flag telling us who you are as you carry your flag from area to area. You must furnish all materials and there are no camp specifications as to what size or material your flag is made. This flag is, also, a great place to display any special awards your group may earn! WATER Drinking water is available from the jugs placed around camp or the spigot by the restrooms. Take what you need use what you take. This is city water just like home so use it for drinking and sanitation. SPECIAL NEEDS No Scout will be denied the opportunity to participate in camp or any program activity. If you have a Scout who is in need of special arrangements, assistance, or modifications, please contact the Camp Director as early as possible so that arrangements may be made. If you have a Scout or Adult that will need to be transported to program areas, please notify us as early as possible. You can find the special needs request in the back of this handbook as well as online (hoac-bsa.org). You may requests to the Camp Director. DO NOT send to the Scout Office. TAG-ALONGS/SIBLINGS Tag-Alongs are not allowed at camp. A Tag-Along is any child under the age of 18 who is not a registered Cub Scout, Boy Scout, or Venturer and who is not serving on camp staff. This includes siblings of Walking Leaders or Adults who stop by camp. This is NATIONAL Standard and our camp will enforce this policy. Please save everyone time and effort by making sure all adults are aware of this rule 17

FLAG ETIQUETTE The flag will fly each day in Day Camp. All Cubs, Den Chiefs, and leaders are expected to be present at flag - raising and lowering ceremonies. The camp salutes the colors when commanded to do so, and the salute is held until the flag reaches the top and the command two is given. At retreat, the camp is commanded to salute when the flag starts down and the salute is held until the command two is given and the flag is removed from the flag rope. Commands: "Camp attention": Each camper stands quietly, hands at side, eyes on color guards. "Camp salute": Cub Scout salute if in camp T-shirt or Scout uniform; civilian salute for others. "Two": Command given when salute may be dropped. "Color Guard advance": Designated person gives this command when group should start the flag ceremony. "Color guard retreat": Designated person gives this command when the flag has been properly placed and signifies the end of the ceremony. Raising and Lowering: When the flag is raised in the morning it is spoken of as "Colors". When the flag is lowered at the end of the day it is called "Retreat". Hoisting: Check the ropes, untangle if necessary. All clasps should be fastened on the flag before it is started upward. At colors one guard may hold the flag as the color bearer attaches it to the rope before raising it briskly to the top. At retreat, the color guard steps forward to catch the flag as it is lowered so that it does not touch the ground. The upper corner of the flag should be in the color bearer's hand before he unfastens the clasps. Camper conduct and salute: Cubs should stand at attention, hats removed, hands at sides, all eyes on the flag. There should be no talking, giggling or whispering. Folding: The Flag is held by the color guard with the blue field nearest the flagpole. The Flag is folded in half lengthwise, then folded in half again lengthwise so that the blue field is on the outside. Fold the flag in triangular folds beginning at the end away from the flagpole (stripe end). When finished the Flag will be folded in a triangle with blue showing all the way around. (See Wolf book for more instruction.) The Flag is carried with the point forward. Once folded the flag is given to the Camp Director. Ceremony: The "ceremony" takes place after the flag has been raised or before it is lowered. The ceremony itself varies but may consist of the Pledge of Allegiance or any appropriate opening or closing ceremony. The Den Leader or Den Chief of the pack conducting the Flag ceremony should be at the flagpole to assist if needed. Staff will be available should your Cub Scouts have difficulty with Raising or Lowering the flag. ANY PERSON ANYWHERE ON THE CAMP GROUND SHOULD STAND AT ATTENTION, FACING THE FLAG, DURING THE FLAG CEREMONIES. 18

They will be assisting the adult staff in their program areas. This is a weeklong commitment with leadership responsibilities. Not only do they help the Cub Scouts in program areas, but hopefully through their example, encourage the scouts to become Boy Scouts. A big cheer for a great bunch of kids... we couldn't do it without them!!! 19

ADVANCEMENT SHEETS In your Sunday Pack Packet, you will be given an advancement sheet (please make the appropriate number of copies). NO SLEEVELESS SHIRTS OR HALTER TOPS allowed in camp (child and adult). NO RUNNING in camp. Stay on established paths. RECOMMENDED - 1 adult leader for every 5 scouts. 22

SAFETY YOUTH PROTECTION Bullying of cub scouts is not acceptable. This includes shaming a child to participate when he does not feel comfortable with an activity. Children should be encouraged to participate but not forced. Child abuse is a crime against youth. Child abuse can involve the mental, physical and sexual victimization of children. The Boy Scouts of America has made it a policy that the Scout Executive of each council, as well as key members of professional and volunteer staffs, become familiar with child abuse and its various manifestations. If you suspect that a child in camp is a victim of child abuse, you MUST report this to the Professional at camp or call, and ask for the Scout Executive. Heart of America Council Policy on Youth Protection states: Each unit needs to have at least one adult walking leader trained in Youth Protection in attendance daily. 23

If the child is not found at the flag mall a search will be started by staff under the direction of the Director and DE. If the child is not found promptly, emergency services will be notified. MEDICATIONS Medications will be dispensed by walking leaders. Cub Scouts requiring medication while at camp must turn this medication in to the person in charge of his Pack, with written instructions. The medication must be in the original prescription bottle. The medication will only be dispensed by the walking leader. Should you have any questions or require assistance, please see the First Aid Staff. OVERHEATED Sit the person down in the shade. Rest at least 15 minutes. Contact First Aid Staff. POISON IVY To help prevent, take a bath immediately upon arriving at home from camp with Fels-Naphtha soap. Wash clothes each day to prevent poison ivy rash. IN CASE OF RAIN Activities will continue to operate as planned under shelter if possible. Other activities will be altered for safety. Camp will not be dismissed and programs will not be delayed due to rain. The Program Staff under the direction of the Directors will instruct the walking leaders on changes in procedure due to rain. IN CASE OF A SEVERE STORMS LIGHTNING, FLOOD, TORNADO Directors and DE will maintain contact with the National Weather Service and use available technology to monitor for lightning and severe weather. In the event of thunder and lightning or a tornado warning, camp will be cancelled and units will be checked out to go home for the day. When programs resume the following day, an amended schedule will be announced, if necessary. SNAKE BITE CARRY the person to First Aid IMMEDIATELY!! Or contact First Aid Staff if the person cannot be moved. Do not attempt to treat victim yourself. Keep the snake bite area lower than the rest of the body. Identify the snake if possible. WATCH FOR SUNBURNS Sun screen and a hat will help. 26

TICKS Spray each scout before coming to camp. Wearing a hat will help. Have parents check the scouts for ticks when reaching home. If you find a tick on a scout at camp, please take him to the First Aid Station. If one is found at home, remove the tick and tape it to a piece of paper and bring it to the First Aid Station the next morning. We will need to know the scout s name, Pack number and location on his body where the tick was found. TORNADO WARNING BEFORE CAMP BEGINS Day Camp will be delayed in the event a tornado warning is in effect at 8:00 a.m. Camp will begin one hour after the warning has been lifted SECURITY AND UNAUTHORIZED VISITORS Buddy System - scouts must always have a buddy with them. Any scout found alone will be taken to administration until his leader (and ONLY THE LEADER) comes for him. Every adult in camp is to wear the wristband of the day to indicate they are authorized to be in camp. Visitors or late comers are to report to Camp Administration to gain authorization to be in camp. Adults not wearing a wrist band should be directed to Camp Administration. Report any person not wearing a camp shirt or wristband to Camp Administration immediately. Unauthorized visitors will be approached by a member of Camp Administration or Security to determine their purpose and to either authorize their presence or refuse them entry, and to escort them off premises if needed. If the unauthorized visitor refuses to leave, emergency services will be called by Camp Administration and the Director and DE will be immediately notified. STRESS MANAGEMENT Camp may create stress in staff and unit leaders. The most important thing is that the scouts have fun let s relax and have a good time, too. Please monitor your own leaders and take a break if necessary to cool off. Please help the staff as requested, keep an eye on your scouts and address situations appropriately. We are all here to help the scouts have a great time. Above all, please try to keep a positive attitude. 27

YOUTH REGISTRATION AND INSURANCE COVERAGE Please remember that ONLY THOSE CUB SCOUTS, BOY SCOUTS, AND ADULT LEADERS REGISTERED WITH THE COUNCIL are covered by the Boy Scouts of America's general accident and liability insurance policies. Thus, ONLY REGISTERED CUB SCOUTS are allowed to attend camp. Most Big Muddy District packs re-charter during the month of January, and all your scouts should have been registered with your unit during this annual process. However, some times, many of them are not registered for one reason or another. During the month of May a copy of your unit's new roster will be printed and placed in your unit s sack that you will pick up on the Sunday before your week at camp. The roster should be reviewed very carefully, and any scout(s) not listed who are planning on attending camp should be registered immediately. The daily attendance sheets for your pack submitted on the first day of camp will be reviewed as well. If any unregistered scouts are found at that time, the pack's walking leaders will be notified by a district representative before departing camp on Monday, and given a youth application for each unregistered scout. A completed application and a registration fee or a copy of the pack's receipt from the council office showing payment at the time of re-chartering for each unregistered youth found, must accompany the pack s daily attendance sheets on Tuesday morning. 28

SPECIAL PROGRAM FEATURES SHOOTING SPORT PATCH Each cub will be eligible for the shooting sport patch and pins. The head Walking Leader for each group will be responsible to identify which scouts complete the requirements. FAMILY DAY Thursday is family day. The camp will be open to families so encourage parents, grandparents, and siblings to come out to camp and see what we have been doing all week. Please car pool as limited parking will be available. Encourage family members to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. NOONTIME SURPRISE We will have a special surprise for the entire camp at 12:30 pm every day. Special guests and/or treats have been arranged for this after-lunch activity. Every day is different, so don't miss any of them!!! MORE DEN TIME IDEAS Assorted items bring items from home to fill down time. Ideas would include soccer balls, footballs, frisbees, etc. Make a craft - bring all items from home and make a special craft in your campsite. Ideas are in the back of this booklet or bring your own. Play a game - simple ideas for fun games to be played in your campsite can be found in the back of this booklet. Have a songfest - teach the scouts to sing songs. CLOSING THOUGHT REMEMBER... Day Camp is a time for the kids to let go! The quality of fun the scouts have at Camp will depend on our program PLUS you as a leader or parent. Let the scouts yell, get dirty and most of all HAVE FUN! This is the time for the kids to be free from most restrictions. Have fun with them... you have a chance to be one of the kids again. Plan on getting dirty with them... no one will notice! We hope you all have a G R E A T time at THE BIG MUDDY DISTRICT CUB SCOUT DAY CAMP Your CUB DAY CAMP STAFF 29

FREE TIME ACTIVITES Splash Tag You ll need several big sponges & one or two large buckets of water. One person is designated as being It. Players run away from It, who tries to tag them by throwing a wet sponge. Once tagged, that person becomes the new It. The great thing about this game is that there s no bickering about whether or not someone got tagged. The splatter on his back says it all!!! Water Brigade Divide the group into two teams standing in parallel lines. Place a bucket of water at one end of each line and an empty bucket at the other end. Give each player a disposable cup. The object of the game is for each team to transfer the water from the filled bucket cup-by-cup to the empty bucket. At the signal, the first players on each team dip their cup into their buckets. The water is passed from player to player on each team by pouring it into next cup. The last players pour their cups into their empty buckets. The winning team is the one that finishes first with the most water. A fast team may fill its bucket first but might meet its Waterloo if a portion of water is carelessly spilled along the way. Paratroopers Materials: 12" square of cloth (a handkerchief works well or cut 12" square from trash bag) Five 12" pieces of string Scissors Wooden clothespin Felt markers in assorted colors Use felt markers to decorate clothespins with face, goggles and jump suits. Pinch the corners of the cloth and tie a string to each corner. Tie all four corner strings together; at the knot, attach a separate piece of string; Finally, tie around the top of the clothespin with the added string. To launch, roll parachutes up around clothespins before throwing. Toss chute into the air with an underhand throw and watch it float in the air. Evaluation Form Fill out the evaluation form with the scouts input. Doing this everyday makes it easy to remember what the scouts liked and suggestions on what could be improved. Prepare for Flag Take time to practice the flag ceremony on the day you have signed up. 30

Rainy Day Idea - 1 RAINY DAY ACTIVITIES Early Flying Machines - Learn to identify some different aircraft. Make different designs of paper airplanes, decorate them and fly them. Which designs work best? Try using paper clips to weight the airplanes differently. Supplies: paper, markers, crayons, scissors, paper clips Rainy Day Idea - 2 Movie Mask - Using a paper plate create your own movie mask. Be creative! Share your creature with your den. Supplies: paper plates, string, yarn, crayons, scissors, any specialty items - pipe cleaners, pompons, glitter, etc. Rainy Day Idea - 3 Pinwheels - Make a pinwheel. Supplies: Paper, crayons, markers, push pins, pencils or thin dowels Rainy Day Idea- 4 Rain Painting -You ll need Chinet brand paper plates (the plates must be non-coated), food coloring, and white crayons. Sprinkle a few drops of food coloring on a paper plate. Get into rain gear and walk outdoors with the plate for about a minute and watch as artistic designs appear. Next, for a batik effect, try drawing a white crayon design on a new plate. Then add some food coloring and head out. 31
