CERC NEWS, UPDATES & REMINDERS 2 PHOTOS Thanks goes to Dick Verduyn, Mark Williamson and Alan Thebert for photos used in this issue of the Companion BOARD MEETING MINUTES Because of the Christmas Luncheon festivities, there was no Board meeting and thus no Meeting Minutes. Also, there was no golf shirt drawing MEMBERSHIP DUES A reminder to all to remit your 2012 dues. Our Membership Chairman, Joe Orlando, advised that as of December 27, only 150 members have paid up. CERC annual dues, still a bargain at $15.00, are due (postmarked) by February 29, Pay by check to CERC, P.O. Box 58, Warren, MI LUNCHEON GUESTS Luncheon guests are welcome at the membership cost of $13/person in advance, $15/person at the door. FROM MAL HANSON EMBROIDERED CERC CAPS To All, I finally have received these caps this week. The blue is a shade darker than the Polo Shirts but as close as they could get it and they look great. I am sending this as I had fully expected to have them at our last board meeting but did not. If any of you would like to purchase one, I will bring them to our Christmas Luncheon. The cost is $8.00 as set by the board. I have 19 left as I am buying 1. For those interested that did not attend the Christmas Luncheon, the new caps will be available at the Mal & Marie Hanson CERC Store at the February 14 luncheon. FROM THE CERC BOARD We currently have 88 members signed up for electronic distribution of the Companion out of a membership of 539. If you have internet access, consider requesting your copy of the Companion electronically. Advantages are that you can download it in color, it saves the Club mailing costs and saves in the labor to fold, address and stamp individual copies. The December issue cost $ 1.68/copy to mail. FROM THE CERC BOARD The Board has had discussion regarding increasing the membership of the Club. We feel that there are many eligible retired ex-chevrolet Engineering that are not even aware of our existence. We are encouraging our members to contact anyone they may know to ask if they may be interested in joining the CERC. Your editor has contacted 5 retired former Chevrolet Engineering employees. We ll see what happens

Ask The Man Who Owns One That s exactly what happened. Darrell Pawlowski asked if I could write a few words about my interest in the Packard Motor Car Company, my 1947 Packard, and the restoration of the Packard Proving Grounds. As I look back, it began when I was transferred from the Milford Proving Grounds to work for Walt Fuelberth in the Engineering Lab as System Manager of the Cooling Group. This resulted in having more free time to spend with the family since all those extended development road trips were a thing of the past. I reconnected with the family chores and like any good engineer began suggesting to my wife how efficiencies would improve with Critical Path Planning, etc. This lasted about a week before Rita made it quite clear that I had better find something to occupy my time or I could be on a critical path. Relaying this to Walt one day, he suggested I consider restoring an old car. This really interested me, but my problem was which car. Up to that time my entire career had been at Chevrolet so a Camaro or Corvette would be a logical choice, but Firebirds and Cadillacs also were in my sights. At the same time, a restored Mustang could get the blood churning. I realized selecting any of these would result in endless questions as to why. Walt came to my rescue by suggesting I try my luck at restoring a marquee that was no longer in production. Weeks later, I purchased a partially restored 1935 Packard 120 sedan from a collector in Brighton, MI. This was the smaller Packard line introduced during the Great Depression and saved the high-level car company from certain bankruptcy. However, historians suggest continuing this lesser version of the mighty Packards contributed to falling sales of the luxury cars and the eventual demise of the Packard Company in For me, this car introduced me to the world of antique cars, the restoration process, the people within the hobby, and the history of Packard. It also filled my leisure hours, much to the delight of Rita. So the years of restoration began with the full support of my family. After selling the 120, I purchased my current Packard. This car was the limousine for a family in Minnesota that owned several funeral homes and used Packards as the hearse and Flower cars. My car is a Super Custom Clipper 8 passenger-touring sedan. It is powered by the 9 bearing straight 8 engine displacing 356 cu. inches that develops 195 H.P. It rides on a 148 wheelbase and measures 20 ft. bumper to bumper. The custom coach builder Henney produced these limousines for Packard in two versions: the 7 passenger touring for the gentleman who employed a chauffeur but on occasion preferred to drive and the formal limousine including a leather front seat and a divider window separating the rear compartment. These models remained in production for 1946 & 1947 and approximately 1600 were delivered. The car has a semi-automatic transmission that depresses the clutch with just the movement of the shift lever. Packard, like most auto companies, was feverishly moving to develop a fully automatic transmission in answer to industry changing Hydramatic transmission introduced in Leading Packard s efforts was a young engineer named John Z. Delorean. The rest is history. I have owned the car for 28 years, used it as the marriage car for my two daughters and have enjoyed many hours behind the wheel touring with several car clubs I ve joined over the years. In addition, I have restored a 1969 Corvair Monza, a 1982 Corvette, and am currently working on a 1956 Cadillac sedan deville. Since retiring in 2001, after 47 years with GM, I was invited to join the Packard Motor Car Foundation team that is restoring a portion of the Packard Proving Grounds located on Van Dyke just north of 22 mile rd. The Grounds, opened in 1928, contained a 2 mile oval high-speed track, 4 (Continued on Page 5)
5 various test roads, and an airstrip that Lindbergh visited several times during Packard s development of a radial diesel aircraft engine. At the start of World War II, Chrysler leased the grounds to test tanks. Recently the 13.5-acre site became a Michigan Historical site and is listed in the prestigious National Register of Historic Places. Over the past ten years, many volunteers, with the financial generosity from the movers and shakers of the automotive world, have worked to restore the buildings and grounds to their original splendor. The Foundation s vision includes a research library focused on Packard history combined with an event and catering facility. In addition, there will be a Museum devoted to the Arsenal of Democracy and a Museum of Automotive Testing centered around the somewhat secret world of proving grounds. Currently on display are several Packard cars and artifacts, Packard built engines for a WWII PT boat and mine sweeper, and the original 1928 Packard towing dynamometer. On loan is Miss America X sporting four V12 cylinder Packard engines that powered Gar Woods to many victories on the Detroit River. As we continue to restore the site, a Spring and Fall Open House occurs providing tours, a well-attended car show, a petting zoo for the kids, and music by Johnny Trudell s Big-Band Orchestra. Throughout the summer, several car events are held including the Cars R Stars Show (previously Carnival of Cars) that features over 250 antique cars of all makes and a 150 vendor swap meet that I have managed for 30 years. To say the least, I found my critical path and I am still pursuing it in retirement. EDITORS NOTE: For those that might be interested, I will try to advise the CERC, via the Companion, of the dates for the Packard Foundation Open Houses as they become available. A good way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Dave s story is one of many in the lives of CERC members. I m sure that many others have hobbies, achievements of grandchildren or stories in their families that would be of interest to all of us. I would like to publish more than funny stories and photos (although if you are like me you look forward to the pictures, if for no other reason than to find out who was there that you missed saying hello to). The Companion is looking forward to hearing from you.
6 THE FOLLOWING IS FROM MS. DIANE ROBERTS, BOB GERVAIS DAUGHTER; I HAVE ATTACHED A PHOTO OF MY SON, CAPTAIN DAVID N. ROBERTS, USMC, SHOWN WITH HIS TRANSPORTATION (A CHEVROLET SUBURBAN) WHILE ON DEPLOYMENT IN AFGHANISTAN EARLIER THIS YEAR. IT WAS HEAVILY ARMORED AND ALSO HAD IED DETECTION CAPABILITIES. OUR SON DID A LOT OF DRIVING DURING HIS DEPLOYMENT AND ONLY IN THIS VEHICLE. NOTE: ABOVE EDITED FROM TWO S FROM DIANE. THE COMPANION WELCOMES PICTURES AND STORIES OF CERC FAMILY MEMBERS SERVING US IN THE UNITED STATES MILITARY, THE PEOPLE KEEPING THIS COUNTRY SAFE. WE ALSO WELCOME PICTURES AND STORIES OF OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT BY FAMILY MEMBERS, ESPECIALLY GRANDCHILDREN THE FOLLOWING IS FROM DICK VERDUYN ON BEHALF OF THE CERC BOARD: Hi All- If you've been in a grocery store lately you've certainly become aware of what's happened to costs. If you've purchased gas for your car the same thing has happened. Every cost has gone up! Your heat bill, your light bill, everything has taken a hit. The Gazebo has experienced all the above as we have. With that they find that they have no choice but to also raise the cost of our luncheons. In the past our twelve dollar cost fell about fifty cents short and was subsidized by the club. The additional one dollar cost would be more than our subsidy budget would allow. As a result all luncheon meals will be $13.00 and the club will continue kicking in the sixty three cent subsidy to cover the actual $13.63 meal cost. Still the best deal in town! For those of you that may have already prepaid for meals please send the appropriate adjustments. Thank you, Your CERC board

If you weren t at the CERC Christmas party ask someone who was there. Not only was it the best value of the year but even the weather was perfect. The party was attended by about 102 although we had room for many more. It started with the exchange of seasonal good wishes that were assisted by a cheerful bartender serving an open bar to an appreciative and thirsty group. The Gazebo again did an outstanding job of serving a special meal featuring deluxe chicken, meatballs, and delicious salmon along with all the salads, pasta, and fruit trimmings. As dinner came to a close we were delighted to be entertained by a senior oriented array of humor delivered by Jerry Bozaan. Jerry is well known to many CEC people for his many M.C. jobs at retirement party s or roasts. He also performs at many senior centers with his comedy. This year the Wally Duda band was expanded to four musicians that played both during some of the meal and after our prize drawings. This year we again drew our own lucky envelopes. Each member drew an envelope holding $20, $30, $40, $50, or $100, What a fantastic bargain! Pay $25.00, win between $20.00 and a $100.00, get a fantastic meal, have an open bar accompanied with a band and dance music, all while visiting with the CEC friends you spent so many years with. As I said in the beginning, if you were there you know. If you weren t at the CERC Christmas party ask someone who was there, about the great time that was had. We truly hope to see you there next year. Sincerely, Your CERC board and committee chair people

FROM PAUL BILLION 9 The word UP Read until the end... This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is ' UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v]. It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car. At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. If you argue, you can kiss and make UP. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it soaks UP the earth. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now... my time is UP! NEW CHEVROLET BILLBOARDS POSTED AROUND DETROIT The Chevrolet Billboards shown on pages 5 & 17 were forwarded to me by Jackie Olinger. These are actual billboards put up by GM. Kinda makes you proud These were the vehicles we were all involved with in the good old days!

14 We reported in the December issue that Lou Loran passed away on May 11, with no further information. The following is from Alice Loran to Joe Orlando; At the time of his death Lou was married to Alice for 45 years. He is also survived by his son Brad and daughter Janet (Jim Giszczak). He was Poppi to his beloved grandchildren Libby, Sydney, Anna, Jack and Casey Anne. Lou went to public schools in Detroit and walked miles and miles to school in wind, sleet, snow and hail uphill. While growing up he earned money tuning cars, selling women s shoes and working at Chick s Deli at State Fair and John R. He played football for Cass Tech and graduated in He was a really good football player; just ask classmate Don Courtley. After graduating from Cass Tech, Lou won a drafting competition sponsored by Chevrolet Engineering and began his career there as a Drafting Apprentice in The years between 1960 and 1965 were Lou s bachelor years. He worked at Chevrolet Engineering as a Body Designer, was an avid skier, played softball, hockey, drank beer and chased skirts. He lived in Royal Oak in a house on Northwood Blvd. with his buddies Steve, Rex, Ed and Jim. In 1975, Lou s health challenges began. Fibrous tumors were growing in his feet. One surgery lead to another, followed by yet more surgeries. From his mid-thirties to his death, Lou endured over 30 surgeries and suffered significant pain as a result of the damage inflicted by the tumors, nerve damage and scar tissue. All of this was complicated by a severe neuropathy. In 1983, after 22 years of service and at the age of 46, Lou received a medical retirement from General Motors. Lou was diagnosed in December, 2010 as having Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ALS aka Lou Gehrig s Disease. It paralyzed him and made him a painful prisoner in his own body. Eventually, he was unable to move, eat or speak yet his mind remained sharp and alert. We know he is in Heaven, probably has already made tee times and spoke with St. Peter about improving the method for registering newcomers. Rest in peace, Poppi.
