2 EEE REPORTS GUILTY CONSCIENCE: I just came home from Bojangles on US/220S where I wished eight VA-K members a safe and fun ride to the Levering Orchard, in Ararat, VA. I didn t go because Pat and I had a wedding to attend. This seems to be happening to much lately, rides being pre-empted by other commitments; hence my guilty conscience. I hope this isn t happening to you too. The riding season is here; let s re-organize our priorities and ride. With that in mind I m organizing a ride for Wednesday 15,JUN. Ride to Humpback Bridge 7 miles east of Covington (Total one way = 75 miles), At the bridge we will take pictures of you and your co-rider on your bike in front of the LOVE work at Humpback Bridge. The "L" was created with historic bricks from the area. The "O" is a gear from one of the old paper machines at MWV, representing the history of manufacturing in the area. The "V" is the natural feature created by a tree in the creek bank. The "E" was created with railroad ties representing the history of the railroad in our community. Before going to the bridge we will stop at the Club Car Shop and Deli in (525 Main St, Clifton Forge (540) ) where It s best to make reservations. We will process the pictures and make them available for purchase. Use the following link for more on the Humpback bridge: and for the deli. We will leave from Bojangles on US-220S next to 10:00AM. To make this ride worthwhile I d like at least 4 bikes. Please call, text or your interest. If the ride is successful we will plan a second ride with multiple Chapters participating and use it as a fund raiser. KENTUCKY DERBY: On May 7 th sixteen VA-K s attended a proxy Kentucky Derby at Bobbie Jo & Durwood s Estate. Although we lacked a real horse the proxy was realistic because everyone dressed like they were attending the derby especially the ladies with their wide brimmed flowery hats. The ladies culinary skills provided food better than the real derby. Jan won first place in the HAT contest, Pat placed second. Diana, Pat and Emil picked the wining horse. Emil pinned the closest tale on the horse. Thanks to Bobbie Jo & Durwood for the use of their facilities. VA-V CHICKIN PICKIN: VA-K was a good neighbor with a great turnout (21) at the May 14 th VA- V CHICK N PICKIN. The chicken and all the fixings were great. Greg & Diana ran the games. Pat and I tried to beat the rain home but we didn t make it. Fortunately the rain lasted just long enough to get us wet but not soaked. VA-K GATHERING: At our last gathering on May 9 th twenty four attended. Most of the meeting was a question/answer session with motorcycle trooper Robby Mason VA State Police that gave us some insight on how a motorcycle trooper goes about his duties. MEMORIAL DAY: This year we can honor one of our own. Col Frank Leslie Luschen, Linda Kay's father. He will be buried at Arlington on July 29 th. Anyone interested in going, please contact Linda Kay. Also, this year s Bike Fest Poker Run will be held on Saturday, June 18 th. In Roanoke. Once again 100% of the proceeds will go to the Nation of Patriots which will help a local wounded veteran and their family. It is 100% because all members of the Nation of Patriots are volunteers. Last year we raised $ and were able to help two local wounded veterans and their families. It is a great cause and gives us a chance to show our support to those who have given up so much 6/8/2016 CHAP K NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 OF 14 Pub. 4

3 to defend our freedom. Walt Kugelman a former VA-K director looks forward to saying Hi to you at the event FATHER S DAY: I grew up in Queens NYC where Archie Bunker, played by Carroll O'Connor in the TV series, All InThe Family lived and drove his cab. He was constantly squabbling with his family over the social and personal issues of that time (1970 s). I never thought about it much, but I wonder just how close to an Archie I might have been. I won t venture a guess and further I won t bring it up with the family on June 19 th Father s day. WEDNESDAY RIDES: We had a couple of Wednesday rides in May. Wednesday rides need more participation and hopefully the warm part of the year will bring this about. John loves to ride and has a ride planned for Saturday June 25 th. JUNE RIDES AND EVENTS: Chubby is hosting his annual hot dog cookout on June 11 th along with a possible ride before the cookout. Betty Black is going to take us to one of her favorite eateries, Woods Grill in Charlottesville VA. on June 18 th. John Dubose is taking us to Wright s Dairy Rite in Staunton VA on the 25 th of June and as mentioned earlier I am planning a ride for June 15 th. There is lots of riding fun in June so get with it and participate. T1mes and starting locations to follow REGION N RALLY: Eight VA-K s attended the 2016 Region Ride N, May 20-21st rally at Hungry Mother State Park in Marion Va. Greg/Diana, Durwood/Bobbie Jo and Barry/Betty stayed in campground cabins and Steve/Barbara stayed at a motel. There were games to be played similar to those at our Chilli Cook-Off. The group used the cooking facilities provided in the cabins along with an included barbecue lunch. In spite of a wet weekend all had a great time. Oh, I almost forgot to mention Diana slept in top bunk!!. TUESDAY ICE CREAM RIDES: Attendance has been meager for this evening ride. It s been suggested to reduce these rides from every week to once a month and add a once a month Sunday ride that starts 3PM. Sunday would provide daylight to those uncomfortable riding during sun down. Get me your comments on this possible change and be prepared to discuss. If we do this we need a leader to coordinate the Sunday rides. OTHER RIDES AND EVENTS: Wings Over The Smokies Sept th. And don't forget Rally In The Valley, 2016 Mystery Madness, October 6 th -8 th. LEVEL 4 PATCH: Last but not least congratulations to John Dubose for completing the requirements for a Level 4 patch. Pat & Emil Kuelz LEADING THE CHAPTER K TEAM MAY WINNERS Jack Dillard won Spirit, Betty Black won the $38 50/50 pot and Jan aka Lucky Rettinghaus won the $78 progressive pot. Friend is a word we use loosely today. They will go out of their way for you. A friend will stand with you in the good and the bad. They will cheer you on when you are wrong, even if your GPS tells you to go another direction. 6/8/2016 CHAP K NEWSLETTER PAGE 3 OF 14 Pub. 4

4 DANNY S EDUCATION CORNER KNOWLEDGE There has been an increase of knowledge. From the telegraph to the talking cell phone. From the horse and buggy to the jet plane. Are you ready to be instructed by a robot? What is the world coming too??? (an end) The increased knowledge was a prophesy way back there. For whatever things were written before were written for our learning. This is a mind world, your control tower for continuing learning. What you program in to it, you will be able to use later. There is so much knowledge in the GWRRA seminars/modules that have been written for our good. Let everyone be fully persuaded in their own mind. There is no doubt, I can do this. Take it all in and let it out when needed. In 1974 Burger King introduced a new advertising slogan "Have it your way"!!! This has worked for all this time because most people want things their way and believe their way is the best. Because they haven't tried the rest. Change is not for everyone. Knowledge for what's happening now goes a long way. From a telegraph to a talking cell phone. You are what's happening so let s get er done. As we ride into the future, there are all sorts of storms on the horizon. Our past will tell us what we did, could have, maybe should have. Will you be prepared? The GWRRA education system will help you decide. The rest is up to you. RIDING GEAR & SAFETY Now that the weather could get hotter, what is your protective gear? ATGATT (All The Gear All The Time). This should go along with our safety motto. Some riders wear different outfits or leave some clothing off when it is hot. That s dangerous. What if you fall off without the best gear on? What about that road rash or worse? Have you been in 100+ degree weather? How can you wear ATGATT? It s your body. Will you need more air, it is important not to be exposed to too much air. Extremely hot air cannot cool you. Your riding suit could have several materials and/or layers. Kevlar, the better to slide on next to leather, Gore-tex is a waterproof, breathable fabric. It allows some air to pass through. Under your jacket you could wear a microfiber long-sleeved tee shirt. When you sweat {perspire} the tee shirt lifts the moister from your skin and allows it to evaporate. That will cool you down. At times you could purposely wet the tee down. Don t forget the water bottle for yourself. Are there other methods that work for you that you would share? Would you share some of your riding stories that would help others? They can be from past experiences that you did or did not do. You do not have to use your name. Use your wife s name. Remember could be in good hands when you seek the knowledge that puts you ahead of the rest. It s not what s in your wallet but what is in your head. Continue riding safely. 5 RIDE REPORT VA-K RIDE WEDNESDAY MAY 25, We had four wings and five riders out for our beautiful ride to Clifton Forge, Covington and Paint Bank. Riders were Chubby Arrington, Richard Bowles, Darrel Quesenberry (DQ), John DuBose and granddaughter Sage representing VA-K. Chubby and Richard met up at Bojangles then met up with John and DQ at Hardee s EXT 150 in Troutville. We headed up Lee Highway (11) to Buchanan then 43 across to Eagle Rock picking up 220 to Clifton Forge. The group decided to skip Club Car Shop for lunch and eat at Cucci s in Covington. DQ turned us on to this spot and all seemed to enjoy lunch. After lunch we let DQ take over the lead, taking us back 18 to Paint Bank for an ice-cream break. Then down the mountain on 311 where Sage and I cut off at Catawba heading to Troutville and the other wings headed in to Salem and splitting off for home. Big Red went around 160 miles today so I know the wings from Rocky Mount area racked up a few more miles John DuBose MASTER TOUR RIDER EDITOR S CORNER It looks like summer may finally be here. This means longer days and more time to ride! I hope everyone will enjoy the warmer weather & sunshine. Please let me know if there is anything that you would like to see in your newsletter. Remember to fly your flag on the 14 th (and every day). Happy Father s Day to all you dads. Jan Rettinghau s CHAPTER K TEAM 6/8/2016 CHAP K NEWSLETTER PAGE 5 OF 14 Pub. 4
