2 EEE REPORTS JULY MEETING: 24 members and 4 guests attended the July 10 th meeting. My recall and notes doesn t highlight anything. JULY RIDES: Pat and I participated in the July 9 th ride led by Steve Strickland, the Progressive Dinner on July 16 th, and I went on a Picnic Ride to Goshen on July 23 rd led by Dave Miller. Thirteen of us attended the Progressive Dinner Ride. The weather limited our riding but certainly didn t limit our eating. The food was tremendous! We had salad at Diana and Greg s, a pork meal at Betty and Barry s and strawberry shortcake at Pat and Emil s. The whole meal was gourmet. No one in Roanoke had a better meal than we did that day. I know the guys helped but the women, Diana, Betty and Pat deserve a special thank you for their efforts. Those who didn t attend missed out on something special. Steve led six of us on a ride to the Pink Cadillac, although we did not eat there because we got there early. We traveled by US-501 to Bedford were the six of us ate lunch at Liberty Station. The weather didn t totally cooperate on the ride home. Goshen is a picturesque place to have a picnic lunch after a back roads curvy ride that Dave Miller led four us on. George Dudley joined us. He has or will soon leave on his annual three week trip around the USA. Have a great trip George. There were also other rides described elsewhere in this newsletter. AUGUST RIDES: Richard Ride to Paint Bank, Darrell Ride to Hinton WVA, Bobbie Jo Smart View breakfast, Emil - Smith Mountain Dam Picnic Ride, and Mystery and Ice Cream Rides are listed along with details in the enclosed August Ride Schedule. Everyone is welcome to join the fun of riding safely with friends. Bobbie Jo is coordinating the Smart View Breakfast. She will need your support making this happen. Note - Smart View is located at Mile Post It has picnic areas with rest rooms and drinking water. IT S BEEN HOT: July has been a hot muggy month with a lot of thunder showers. Did you get caught in one? If not you probably have not been riding. Riding into a drenching rain can be extremely dangerous. The safest thing to do is to find shelter and stop until the rain subsides. One way to control the heat is to use cooling towels. The club is selling Cooling Towels at $9:00 each or two for $17:00. We have some left and will bring them to the Gathering. SEPTEMBER MEETING/GATHERING: Since the September meeting conflicts with Labor Day on September 5 th, we will move it to the next night, Tuesday September 6 th. The September Gathering remains as scheduled on September 12 th. GOING THE WRONG WAY: Some years ago in the mid 1970 s, the six of us in the Kuelz family were driving South in the family station wagon on I-81 near Lexington VA. I pulled out to pass a car and as I scanned the lane ahead I thought I saw headlights coming at us. I did a clarifying blink and the threat was confirmed. I got the car back in the right lane just in the nick of time as a car drove by us going the wrong way on I-81. I ll never forget how my heart pounded and my breath was taken away. Surprisingly, it happened again some years later as I was driving on the Interstate spur from the Davenport Iowa Airport to a customer meeting. An elderly lady totally confused was driving the wrong way. When I saw her car I pulled over on the shoulder and stopped and she did the same almost running into me. I mention these incidents because as a driver and motorcyclist, while driving, you have to be ready to deal with the unexpected. One version of Murphy s law says, Expect the unexpected. Ride safe. WING DING 38: The Billings community is looking forward to hosting you August 31 ST - September 3 RD, Your 38th Annual Wing Ding Rally will be held on the Metra Park grounds in Billings, Montana s Trailhead. It s about 1920 miles from Roanoke. If you are going have a great ride and a great time! DANNY S EDUCATION CORNER NOW FOR THE REST OF THE STORY Dehydrated!!! Why it matters. You can get dehydrated in different ways. Riding a motorcycle in the heat, or working in the heat. Can be indoors or outdoors. You may have already realized it before. Your body is about two-thirds water. So you need water to function properly and feel your best, especially when riding. To prevent dehydration, drink enough fluids so that you use the restroom every two to four hours. Being thirsty isn t always the best sign that you need more fluids. Drink fluids before you feel thirsty. When we talk about fluids, we don t mean coffee, sodas or alcoholic drinks. Drink water to replace what you lose. Some symptoms are: fatigue, constipation, dizziness or confusion. Can cause rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, fever and low blood pressure. All this can lead to heat stroke, seizures or swelling of the brain. A swelled brain (head) has caused a lot of mishaps. Keep track of your body heat and activity so that you can love life and see good days. Like sailing ships of old, we need stability to help us navigate our way through the storms of life. When we dehydrate we lose a lot of this. The heart is a muscle, the muscle that keeps the other muscles going. The essential thing is doing whatever keeps the heart strong. We learn a lot from the book of Nehemiah. How to analyze a difficult problem and craft a solution. How to stay true to our convictions and vision in the face of opposition. How to organize and motivate people around a common cause and how to stay with a task until it is complete. 8/5/2016 CHAP K NEWSLETTER PAGE 3 OF 13 Pub 6

4 You have been told to ride your own ride. The lead person in a group should ride five miles slower. This way the people near the end can keep up. This is a true saying, try it. Communication is a big key in group riding. When I ride with GWRRA members anywhere, I am comfortable with the ins and outs of group riding. Because I am familiar with the style of GWRRA rides. That s because most of us have participated in ROAD CAPTAIN COURSES or TEAM RIDING SEMINARS. How else are we going to know what to do? Traveling in formation and making moves left and right together as a team. Looks good to the eyes. Sometimes there are modifications, to adopt to local traffic, terrain, the number of lanes, type of motorcycle with add-ons. But when new members or friends are visiting, they need to know what modifications have been made. Safety can be compromised. Keeping our space cushion in all directions unless the leader says otherwise for passing, heavy traffic, single file and most of all for safety. Take a minute for a pre-ride meeting before every ride. Let everyone know the ride style. Someone might need to be briefed on our style of riding or our style of communication. Suit up before you mount up. Everyone on a ride should check out other bikes. Sometimes you may have missed something. A safety issue like bad tires, leaks, etc. And, don t forget a little prayer to your pilot who keeps things in control. It has been said that great literature changes you. When you are done reading, you re a different person. What say ye, are you taking instruction and direction that will make you a better rider? It is not too late for the Mature Rider. Riders over 60 years old are three times more likely to be hospitalized after a crash than younger ones. Because of slower reflexes, weaker eyesight, more brittle bones and other disadvantages. The key to optimizing your odds is to be prepared and avoid risks. This is why we all, co-riders too should take the MATURE Rider course. And the GROUP riding course is very important since we ride in a group. So if you want to be a mature rider, let me know. Maybe we can set this up during the month of August. The Instructor needs a couple of dates if something comes up where they can t make it Danny Hughes CHAPTER K EDUCATOR RIDE REPORT On July 9th six of us on four bikes left the Dairy Queen at 9AM and headed north. We went up 460 to Montvale and then up Goose Creek Valley to the top of the mountain; at that point the road meets Route 43 at the BRP, we took 43 down to Route 11 and on to the Pink Cadillac. We arrived about 10:30 and none of us were hungry, so we went for a ride and ended up in Bedford and had lunch at Liberty Station. Then headed home. 5 Wednesday, July 27 Liberty Station lunch ride: Bedford, VA Lead: John DuBose VA-K had four wings and five riders out for a ride to Liberty Station for lunch. The Historic Railroad Station Restaurant with a menu of delicious American fare, created with the best ingredients available, will satisfy the appetite of travelers and locals alike. My all-time favorite meal is the salt & pepper catfish which I had the first time on a Road Runner Motorcycle Magazine Tour about nine years ago. So now whenever I m in this part of Virginia we try to make a stop at Liberty Station. Riders: Lead John DuBose, Don and Fran Hall, Larry Duncan and tail gunner Danny Hughes. VA-K Progressive Dinner Saturday, July 16, 2016 Hospitality at its BEST! We start our adventure in Roanoke heading to Smith Mountain Lake where host, Greg and Diana Brennan welcomed us into their home for social time with a great salad and appetizers. Diana had made a salsa dish that everyone was enjoying, way to go Diana. Then we off on our 40 minute ride back to Roanoke area with CD s Emil and Pat leading the way. Emil and Pat used to live at SML, giving Emil the knowledge for the best routes back to town. He even got us up on the BRP to avoid going through Vinton, missing the traffic. Our next host, Barry and Betty Black had setup their backyard for us to enjoy all Betty s gardening projects. We enjoyed more social time while Betty and Barry where cooking the boneless pork chops on the grill. Betty had really been busy with the many side dishes of fresh vegetables and salads. As I ve heard before you never leave Betty s place hungry. Our final stop was just down the road in Hunting Hills at CD s Emil and Pat s home. Being CD s they had hosted the deserts with splendor. The strawberry shortcake, homemade whipped-cream, chocolate covered strawberries, cantaloupe and ice-cream with toppings to be washed down with Pat s special punch. What a way to complete an excellent evening; Friends for Fun.
