Everyone ride safe and enjoy this weather. Tillman and Janet Hill GWRRA Chapter NC-I CD August, 2015 It is hard to believe that the riding season is almost half over. The chapter has had some great rides. Thank you Al and the many others that have planned, led and rode tail gunner for these fun rides. We have some other great rides planned including the week end ride to Abington, Va. Janet also has the week end ladies trip to Knoxville planned. She needs to know ASAP if you ladies are going to go. She is scheduled for jury duty the same week. As all of you know she can work to try to get the dates changed or not serve at all. Please let her know so that she can make her plans. Our Pot Luck Dinner at Ronnie and Lisa s clubhouse in October will be a great time for our many chapter friends. The chapter will furnish BBQ (pulled pork, chicken, and ribs) plus the sides. We will need to know which of the BBQ items each of you would prefer so that when we place the order everyone will get what they want. We will also need to know if you do not like BBQ, we will try to bring something that you would prefer. We still do not know where we will get the BBQ, if you know of a great place let us know and we will look into it. More information will come as we get closer to the date. Wings Over The Smokies was very successful. We do not know the total attendance but have been told that it was very good. Next year will probably be even better since the dates have been moved back to September. The vendors all said they had many visitors and many of them did what they needed, they spent money. Last but not least we would like to congratulate a few of our Chapter I members for making us the great chapter that we are. Robin and Tammy Ferguson: District Couple of The Year Finalist David Smith: First place, Experienced Rider, Top Gun competition. We will have a staff meeting sometime this fall. If there are things that you would like to see the chapter do or change, please let any of your staff members know and we will bring it up at the meeting. Hopefully we will be able to add to or change our activities and will be able to accommodate your wishes. Janet and I sincerely believe that Chapter I has the best membership and friends in not just our district, but in all of Region N. Have a great August, ride safe, have fun and enjoy the remainder of the riding season. Ride Safe 2
Enjoy the Ride and ride often Al & Jean Warren GWRRA Chapter NC-I Ride Coordinator August, 2015 Where has the summer gone? I saw a sign the other day here in TN that school starts on August 5! I thought NC was bad for early school start, but this is way over the top! We are supposed to have at LEAST three more months of riding yet, right? We better enjoy it while it lasts! As I said at the chapter meeting last Saturday, I can t begin to express my appreciation for those that have either suggested rides or volunteered to lead a ride or both, in some cases! It sure makes the role of Ride Coordinator a lot easier. And now, living in TN, it is more difficult to keep up with. However, I know that you will continue to show your support to next year s Ride Coordinator, no matter who it might be. Now let s look at some of our rides for the rest of the riding year: August the chapter ride has been moved to August 15, due to the change in the Lake Logan Triathlon day. Robin Ferguson has graciously agreed to lead the ride in August. The route will take the group first west, then south, west, north, east, north and east again to return to Asheville. NOW aren t you confused?! Just know that it will be a great ride. It will last most of the day, but there will be several places to break off to return home if that is necessary for you. Better to have half a ride than no ride at all, right? Jean and I will be on vacation that day, so please give Robin all your support by showing up for the ride. A hint lunch will be in Highlands! September we are going to soon have our remodeling done in our new house and you re all invited to our house-warming that we re throwing for ourselves! No presents just your presence! We ll be leaving from Weaverville the morning of the 12th and taking the back roads up through WNC and East TN, through Greeneville, TN, and Jonesborough to our place. We ll be having a cookout and lots of fun before you all head back to home. I ll be meeting you in Weaverville and leading the ride here, and Dave Smith will be leading the group back home via the interstate. (Don t worry he s been here before so he doesn t need his GPS to find his way home!) October Yet to be determined. 3
On another note, Jean and I have had to change our home chapter to the Kingsport, TN chapter TN-C. We attended our first meeting last week and I have to tell you how great it is to be a part of the GWRRA family! We were welcomed by so many people and made to feel at home. Just like Chapter NC-I, they are a fun-loving, caring group of folks and we are going to enjoy our enlarged family. However, Chapter NC-I is still, and always will be, our HOME chapter as far as we re concerned. After learning of the fun that was had in Chattanooga in June, we are looking forward to the weekend in Abingdon, VA in October. Be sure to get your reservations in early for that weekend. Last year we had a great time, and it sounds like this year might be even better, so block that weekend now and make your plans to be with us. Jean and I particularly like this destination, as it s only about 50 miles from where we live now. Putting on my ACD cap for a minute, let me just say how much we appreciate Tillman and Janet and their leadership over the last 3 years (or is it 4?). Being CD is not always a very glamorous role, and frequently includes a lot of grief and heartache when things don t work out as planned. They have done an outstanding job, and I hope that all of us will take minute and let them know how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication to Chapter I. Until next time keep the shiny side up! Guess Where & Who are in this Picture for a chance to win 5 tickets for the 50/50 at the meeting this month. All correct guesses will be put in a hat and a winner will be chosen if more than 1 person is right. GOOD LUCK 4
C h a r t e r E d u c a t o r s QUICK TIRE INSPECTION August,2015 One of the first things you should always do before you get on your bike/trike and go out on the open road is to do a tire inspection. Remember there is an awful lot riding on your tires. Poorly maintained tires can compromise the bike s handling and your safety, so making sure they are in good condition is one of the most important tasks of motorcycle maintenance. It is a job that is quick, easy and requires no more than a tire gage and Lincoln head penny. All tire maintenance starts with a thorough visual examination, and yes that means you may have to get on your hands and knees so you can get a worms eye view of the complete tire. The first thing you want to check is the tread depth. A bald tire can toss you down the road faster than it takes to read this sentence, especially if the road is a little wet. They are also more prone to puncture, so there no compromising here. Taking one last ride on a bald tire can have dire and very expensive consequences. As we all know bald is sometime open to interpretation. How many times have we said or heard someone say whadda ya mean that s bald, that thing has got another couple thousand miles on it. The tire manufacturer and the DOT have come up with two ways to determine how bald the tire is. To eliminate the guess work all current DOT approved tires incorporate wear bars that run across the tread to provide an easy to read visual indication of the tread condition. When the tires are new the treads are visible, as it wears they become more prominent and eventually become unmistakable. As a rule, once the tread reaches the wear bar, it should be replaced before the next ride. I n some instances the wear bar might not be readily apparent. If you can t find them look for a small repeating pattern on the sidewall, a small triangle perhaps, or if you are running Michelin tires a tiny representation of the Michelin Man. The symbols indicate where the wear bars are located in the tread, or better yet consult the tire manufacturer s web site. As an alternative you can always measure the tread depth. Normally the tire is considered worn out when the tread depth is 2/23 of inch deep. This number varies depending on the manufacturer, and some of the motorcycle manufacturers supply their own specifications as do some states, but in general 2/23 of an inch should keep you out of trouble. Tire depth gauges are available, but an easier way is to stick a Lincoln head penny in the tread. If all of Lincoln s head is visible the tire is past it s sell by date. If a portion of Abe s head is covered up you re good to go. If you wonder why we use the 2/23 of an inch instead of just saying l/16, it s because of the US, using 32 nd to describe the tread depth in a convention that goes back to inception of the rubber tire. Besides inspection the tread depth, keep an eye out for any foreign objects, primarily sharp ones that will create problems at a later date. If you catch it in time a screw, nail or other road hazards can be removed before it does any damage. If the tire should start to leak when you pull an object out, at least you can comfort yourself knowing that it happened in your driveway while the bike was parked and not on the road cruising at 5
65mph. Last but not lease, check the sidewalls for damage, look for bulges, splits and cracking and as you d expect, replace any tire that is questionable. Once you are satisfied with the tire s physical condition, check the pressure and adjust it accordingly. Electronic digital gauges are the most accurate, easy to read and inexpensive. Remember the tire pressure is always checked when the tires are cold. The bottom line here is if you take care of your tires, they ll take care of you. A little maintenance that only takes about 10 minutes a week provides an extra margin of safety and reliability. And most importantly keep you on top of your tire wear. When it comes to tires, what you don t know is what will hurt you. Take care of your bike and it will take care of you. 7 Membership Enhancement Coordinators Dave & Diane Smith August, 2015 Hi All, My fingers stretch out around the lever, a quick pull and the clutch disengages, left heel strikes shifter, and lever is released. In the blink of an eye the Gold Wing goes from third to fourth and lunges forward. As tach climbs and the process is repeated from fourth to fifth, the tach reaches 3000 rpm. Riding smoothly down the highway my thoughts race through the riding season. Just random stuff in no particular order. The ARC course, Lake Lure dinner ride in the rain, Robin and Gordon triking out their Wings, Chattanooga overnighter, Al and Jean moving, ice cream in Waynesville, Larry and Jackie getting married, Wings over the Smokies, etc. etc. etc. So far this is turning out to be a pretty good year for NC-I. We have made new friends and are glad to have them riding with us. Not had to say goodbye to many other friends so that has been a good thing. So as I am enjoying watching the white lines flick past under the left foot peg my thoughts pass to some upcoming events that will make the fun continue. August 10 = Returning to a favorite Cook s Night Out will be at Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company, 675 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville For those who were there the last time, we had a lot of laughs and even a couple of spills. Fortunately not any of the bikes. August 8 & 9 The Lake Logan Triathlon takes place these two days. Many of our members will be participating in the bicycle portion of the event providing escort service to make this a safer event for the athletes. All escort riders will leave Mc Donald s at 5:50 am. Plan to arrive at 5:15 am if you plan to eat breakfast with the group. August 15 Chapter Ride (Third Saturday) See Al s ride report.
