Tillman and Janet Hill GWRRA Chapter NC-I CD July, 2017 Hi All, We the members of Chapter I had a great month. June had a lot for us to do and we all had a great time. I will qualify that by saying that all of us that were able to ride or join the group in four wheels had a great time. Some of our members were not able to join us because of health issues. For various reasons, Jerry Pitts, David Newman, Linda Gilliam and Jackie Duppstadt were being taken care of by their spouses or the very good health facilities in our area. The first of June, those of us that rode to Ohio rode home from Florence, Ky and all of us rode over one thousand miles that weekend. On our second Saturday ride we rode to the Dillard House in Ga. After the monthly meeting we rode to Ronnie and Lisa s to enjoy a very good meal with 33 of our chapter members and guests. Friends Night Out and our ice Cream Social were very good and those of us that were able to make it had good food and ice cream. Thank you Charles for doing the great job that you have done for us every month since you stepped into the MEC position. As all of you know we will be planning and leading the rides that will be offered at WOTS. Dale from the Hendersonville Chapter will be teaching a Ride Captains Class on July the 1st. Hopefully those of you that are not Ride Captains will step up and take this class to help us have enough Ride Captains for WOTS and the Triathlon that we will be escorting as we have in the past. Both of these events will help the chapter to earn money that will allow us to offer more fun things for our members to enjoy with the chapter being able to pick up the tab. I know that several of our members are able to ride more often than Janet and I do and we are very envious. We have several other obligations that we enjoy doing with our golf, bowling and family friends. Even though we are not riding with you on the Adventure and other rides, we miss being with you. We would like to see as many of our members as possible join you and your great rides Hopefully all of our members and staff know that we consider Chapter I to be very special. This is our 5th year as your CDs and believe me if we did not have this special group we would have stepped down several years ago. Thanks, all of you for all you do. Ride Safe, Janet and Tillman 2

C h a p t e r E d u c a t o r Janet Hill July, 2017 I want to wish each of you a happy and safe 4th of July. ARE YOU RIDING ON THE DARK SIDE Traffic Safe, an organization that promotes global road safety, urges motorcyclist not to use a car tire on their two wheel bike. The choice of tires for motorcycles Is critical to ensure safety and there are many factors to consider. Three wheelers have special considerations and there may be circumstances when the choice of a car tire is feasible but for two wheeled motorcycles technical opinions from experts are overwhelmingly against the practice of riding on the dark side. At one time a well known tire manufacturer published a recommendation to riders of Goldwings and Valkyre motorcycles to use their tires on the real wheel, quoting advantages such as improving comfort and traction with less effect on road gravel on handling. Traffic Safe's vehicle experts says Motorcycle tires are constructed differently from car tires to cope with the kind of side loads that are normal for motorcycles but would not be normal for four wheeled vehicles. Car tires are simply not constructed to take sustained lateral loading to the extent experienced on a motorcycle. Their advice is simply, don t do it. A car tire develops cornering force by having a slip angle applied to it, and is not designed to run at the camber angles encountered on a motorcycle. The use of a car tire on a motorcycle may lead to unpredictable handling and cause rapid deterioration in the sidewall leading to possible tire failure with serious consequences. Motorcycle wheels and tire wheels differ in profile, and it is essential that the tire and the wheel are compatible. Car wheels are not compatible with motorcycle wheels. They are also doing research as to how fitting a car tire on a bike would affect any insurance claims. It is possible that a prior approval from your insurance company would be necessary to keep the policy from being invalidated in the event of an accident. Motorcyclists should check with their insurance company before putting non standard equipment on their bikes. Just saying, maybe not a good or safe idea. Ride safe and always be aware of your surroundings. Janet Hill GWRRA Chapter NC-I Educator 3

Membership Enhancement Coordinator Charles Weinhagen July, 2017 Live to Ride and Ride to Live Yesterday I/we did an adventure I have wanted to do for a long time, Cherohala Skyway, Tellico Plains, TN. 388 miles, left at 7am to meet up with Johnny J, Charlie C, George M, and Bob Topper from M2 and pulled back into the garage 15 1/2 hours later at 10:30pm. Actual riding time about 9 hours with an average speed of 43mph. We ran into rain shortly after leaving Hendersonville then again from Candler all the way to Robbinsville and on the way back for about 30 minutes. Once we left Robbinsville the rain stopped and we finally saw blue sky when we got to the Skyway. Along the way we stopped at Bald River Falls which was beautiful. After we left the river road entrance I kicked a Swan in the middle of the road. Let me explain, a very large inflatable Swan and a raft must have flown out of the back of a truck and to get it out of the road I gave it the boot as did Bob when we rode by. Yes I know we should have taken a picture of it. We had a good lunch at Tellico Kats Deli along the river and then went to the Charles Hall Museum ( in Tellico Plains which was outstanding, well worth the time to visit. If you haven t rode the Cherohala Skyway I highly recommend the trip. Also on the way back we stopped at Fields of the Wood Bible Park in Murphy NC ( Now it doesn t matter if you are a religious person or not this park is impressive with its 320 steps up Prayer Mountain with the Ten Commandments, Tomb, All Nations Cross and Flags. The massive letters on the mountain are 4 feet wide and 5 feet tall. We had 18 attend June s FNO Friends Night Out at Bay Breeze Restaurant in Hendersonville and with the exception of it being too d mn far away for them that live way far up in the mountains everyone enjoyed the seafood and fellowship. We had 17 come to our Sunday Ice Cream Social at the eclectic Hop ice cream in West Asheville. Their made in-house ice cream was delicious and the sidewalk scenery was interesting to say the least. If you didn t 5

make it to any of June s functions hopefully we ll see you at one in July. As Chapter MEC I am suppose to be upbeat and maintain a positive attitude but there are several issues going on with GWRRA that are making this difficult for me. First is a monthly AR Area Report I receive that shows who s Due s are due and who is behind in reupping their dues and I am suppose to call and give gentle reminders but the problem is the information for the most part is not current and inaccurate. Did I mention my Due s are due in September? Second is for the last 6 weeks I have tried logging into my membership information on the GWRRA website and have not been able to. They informed me it was their server problem not recognizing Google and that the IT department was working on fixing it. Also on the website they still have a note posted that their phone system is having trouble with dropping calls. Third is the direction the Wing World magazine is taking by omitting the Events section that in the past keep us informed of what is going on within GWRRA around the country and world along with the down sizing of the magazine by almost half an inch and the shrinking of some of the print in some of the sections. If you feel the same as I do give Phoenix a call or send them an . Be Safe, Ride Often and Live Life to the Fullest!

Ride & Planning Coordinators Dave & Diane Smith July, 2017 Hi All, June has turned out to be a good riding month for NC-I despite the fact that we have had a lot of rain. Eight of us made the trip to Ohio. Mother nature blessed us with lots of sunshine and temps in the upper 70 s. There was a nice cloud cover off and on that made riding really enjoyable. The group did ride in rain for the last couple of hours on the way home, just enough to get the Wings dirty and required a good cleaning. Day one going up was a relaxing ride with lots of breaks and light traffic. Day two found the group at the Portsmouth flood wall in the morning. For those seeing it for the first time, they were truly amazed. Early afternoon we arrived at the AMA Headquarters. We received the VIP treatment starting with special motorcycle parking. A representative from the AMA greeted us, explained the museum and what we would be looking at. She also told us the function, scope and purpose of the AMA. As we walked around there were all types of bikes and displays from different eras explaining prominent riders along with their stories. A second representative from the legal department met with members of our group to talk about the battles being fought on our behalf by the AMA. This is absolutely the best organization representing motorcyclists out there. Day three we rode to Young s Dairy for brunch. The largest ice cream shop in Ohio also served breakfast along with ice cream. Luckily we were still able to get on our bikes after eating. A scenic ride through southern Ohio and along the Ohio river, we crossed over into Kentucky. We continued along the Ohio river watching the barges move coal. We arrived at our motel in time to take a nap before going out for the evening. That night we fired up our Wings, put up kickstands, shifted into gear and took off for Haufbraus. A German Garden Pub in Newport that was packed full of people, complete with a band and gents and maidens serving in the traditional dress. There was lots of loud singing, dancing, shouting, laughter and authentic food and beverages and NC-I was right there in the thick of it. With a little help from the GPS we all made it back to our rooms with a late start scheduled for the following morning. 8

Day four found us on the ride home. Of course my plan and GPS went south and we got to ride on some Kentucky country roads that we had not ever seen before. It was a fun trip which added over 1000 miles to everyone s odometer. Second Saturday ride was to the Dillard House in Georgia. Stan did a fine job leading and Rob and I did drag for the seven Wings going to the restaurant. This was the first time some of our members had been there, however, none of us left with any room to spare. Stan then led us the back way home and we were able to enjoy much of the nice roads and scenic views that brought us to make our homes here. Ok, so if you are feeling a little left out not to fear for there are more rides to go on here. July 1 M2 has planned Ride Captain Course and has opened it up to anyone in our chapter that would like to attend. There is no cost to take this course. If you are not a current ride captain, I would encourage you to take this course. NC-I is going to need a lot of road captains to assist on the tours for Wings over the Smokies in Sept. Contact M2-CD Dale Yager. July 8 NC-I will be riding to Boone to dine at the Daniel Boone Inn. The cost will be $17.99 per person. We will need to make reservations. Please RSVP by July 5. You can Tillman or I, addresses are in this newsletter. We will be leaving from Weaverville, Burger King at 9:05 am. Tillman and Dave Smith will be ride captains for this event. July 22 Monthly meeting at J & S. Eat at 9 and meet at 10. After the meeting we will be riding to Morganton for some good ole fashioned BBQ. Robin will be the ride captain for this event. The riding season is here so polish those tanks, air up the tires, put the kickstand up and just.. Go 4 It Stay Safe with your Travels David & Dianne Smith GWRRA Chapter NC-I Ride Coordinator 9

Chapter Overnight Ride Hi All, I want you to take a journey with me. Imagine that you have just finished washing your Wing. There is a soft rag in your hand; it s faded from lots of use. There are a few water spots on the side of the trunk and they are quickly removed. Moving forward to the side covers, the mind drifts back to the latest overnight ride. Stepping outside the sun feels warm on your cheek and the grips feel soft not hard like they do when the weather is cold. As your co-rider appears she is carrying her luggage for you to put into the saddlebag. She slips on her full face helmet to go. Man does she look good. The boots the jeans and there is just something really sexy about those full face helmets. Must be those eyes looking right at you with just a little shock of hair exposed. It feels good sitting on the seat blipping the throttle with her right behind me. We ride together to the jump off point. Coming down the road you strain to see who s there. Let s see, there are 2 two wheelers and three trikes. Oh yes, I can tell there at two red ones and two silver and one black. By now I see the group milling around talking and we know every one of them. Standing around at the rider meeting, kind of half listening, I look over at the Wing. Yep I did a good job getting her all cleaned up for the weekend. Soon everyone is on their bike, we raise our hand for the radio check and we are off. It is a good day. We ride past brooks and streams. The patches of clouds form different designs. I reach forward and change the music as the ride leader calls out 3 5 coming into a 35 mph zone probably some little town. Sure enough there is one traffic light, we pass homes where lawns are getting mowed and ladies are working on flower beds. After lunch where the Wings are all lined up in a row like soldiers ready to go, we head back out on the highway. It s early afternoon and the sun is high overhead. We look like a long snake twisting its way through the turns each one with a different radius some requiring downshifting others just full on throttle control. After a couple of hours the group arrives in Crossville, TN. We mill around in the lobby as we get checked into the Comfort Suite and Inn. It s late afternoon and some will go to the model railroad museum while others will simply take a nap. I dig out the old faded rag and wipe down the Wing just to get the grime off. I really don t need to do that since it still looks good but I just want to give it a little attention. It s time for dinner and we walk hand in hand me and my honey over to the Brass Lantern. Everyone is in good spirits and laughing and joking and telling stories albeit they have 10

been embellished over the years. No one cares, we still laugh at the same ole jokes. After dinner we ride the 15 min. to the Cumberland County Playhouse. They are doing The Drowsy Chaperone, a musical comedy with some entertaining adult themes. The show is good and by the time we finish putting the cover on the Wing for the night we are ready to get a good night s sleep. I put my head down on the pillow knowing that the Wing is waiting in the parking lot for us to fire her up in the morning and enjoy another fantastic day of riding with good friends on the way home. I shake my head and get back to focusing on those water spots on the front fender. This has not happened yet. However, on the weekend of Oct 7 & 8 your NC-I staff is going to make this happen. Here are the details. Comfort Suites and Inn Cost is $ tax Total = $ this price includes military, law enforcement, AAA, AARP discounts this is being done through our GWRRA discount program and there will be no other discounts. To reserve a room let Janet Hill or Dave Smith know. That is all you need to do. You will pay for the room upon arrival. All rooms are King size beds. If you reserve a room and choose to cancel you must cancel by OCT 1 or you will be obligated to pay for the room. Cumberland County Playhouse 931/ Oct 7 Cost is $27 for seniors Everyone will need to make their own individual reservations if you decide to attend the play. It was not possible for NC-I to make a group reservation. If you need to cancel your reservation you must do so by OCT 1. Well I did a good job of cleaning up my Wing. I need to put this ole rag away and go in the house and start making phone calls. Hope to see each and every one of you there. Remember: Without you the party won t get started. 13 Lake Logan Triathlon Again, this year our chapter will provide escorts for the bicycle portion of the Lake Logan Triathlon held on Saturday, August 5 and Sunday August 6. This is one of our chapters primary fund-raising events. Our chapter will be paid $500 for providing the escort service, so please volunteer to be an escort rider. We will need 9 riders on Saturday and 5 on Sunday. The event starts at 7am both days, and should be over on Saturday by about 12 noon, and earlier on Sunday. On Saturday, we need two riders on 2 wheels to host race officials. We will not need to provide rides for the race officials on Sunday. No special skills are required. You do have to have a CB radio on you bike. There will be a pre-ride the week before to show the route and explain the duties of the escorts. Basically, the escorts will ride in a specific area watching these fit young people compete, and report any issues to the race officials. I have found to be interesting and fun over the past several years. Let me know if you are willing to join us at jerrypitts@bellsouth.net or Thanks, Jerry Pitts 13
