3 F irst, let me thank Jerry for conducting the July meeting in my absence. I ve heard many comments (all good) that he had you guys out in 35 minutes and did an outstanding job. Of course, he had a great support staff to help him out in particular Terry, Frances, Diana, and Bonnie. Thanks girls your help was greatly appreciated! Wings Over the Smokies (WOtS) is just around the corner hope everyone is getting excited and ready for the fun to begin. It is time to order our worker shirts for WOtS, so if you were not at our July meeting, but you are planning to go to Wings, please let us know so we can add you to the worker s list and order your shirts. Before WOtS, we have some rides coming up so look for Sid s with the details for each. A couple of items have been firmed up that we want to put on your radar. 4 S ince Earnest Cagle is usually working during our monthly gatherings, I was able to present his Road Captain Rocker during our July Staff Meeting at Gorman Christian Academy. And during our July gathering, I was pleased to present last 2 Road Captain Rockers to Keith Helmer and Dan Eakright. Congratulations again to everyone who attended the H2 Road Captain Course back in May. On Saturday, July 14th, Gary Harris, Keith Helmer, Jerry Hyde and I met at Hardee s and then made our way down to Harris County Park where we escorted the bicycle race in the Triangle Triathlon. It was an absolutely beautiful day with over 300 triathlon participants. Normally the bicycle route is circular and we don t get to see each other during the race. However, this race had 2 turn arounds and we saw each other quite often. With bicycles going in both directions on the same road, it was interesting when the motorcycles met each other going in opposite directions. The road got a little narrower when that happened. But being the experienced motorcyclists that we are, there were no catastrophic motorcycle events that day! And we did receive a nice check for our Murdoch fund raiser. On the following Saturday, July 21 st, 6 Gold Wings ridden by Tony Butler, Earnest Cagle, Dan and Mary Eakright, Grant Gilliam, Jerry Hyde along with Terry and myself met at the Miami Boulevard Sheetz and headed down NC 55 on our first ice cream ride of the summer to Sunni Sky s Homemade Ice Cream located in Angier, NC. NC 55 was the most direct route there but I did not count on a lot of Saturday morning traffic along with catching about half of the 50 lights red! We got plenty of practice for stopping and starting. Thank goodness, I had mapped out some back roads on the way back that was almost free of traffic. It was a nice easy ride and the ice cream was very good also. At least we got there and were enjoying our ice cream before the line went out the front door. Coincidently, Terry mentioned our trip to some of her cousins from Fuqay-Varina and they told us about another ice cream store with even better ice cream. Stay tuned for Part 2 of the summer ice cream rides! The ride schedule for August begins on the 11th with the Chapter T2 s School Tools Ride. Please bring back packs, paper, pencils, pens, crayons, scissors or anything kids need at school! Kick Stands Up at Cookout, 3624 Hillsborough Rd, Durham, NC at 8:00 am. We will take a direct route via I-40 to Greensboro, then I-74 to Asheboro, NC 49 and 8 to US 52 into Albemarle. This is 110 miles and will take about 1 hour and 50 minutes travel time. We will meet Chapter Ride Coordinator Sid & Terry Chambers at 10:00 am at RPM Cycles at 1510 US 52 in Albemarle. 50/50 tickets will be available there and the drawing will be held before we leave RPM Cycles at 11:00 am. Then we will ride to West Stanly Baptist Church on Highway 24/27 and have lunch. Door prizes will be provided by T2 members. Once their ride has ended, we will gas up and head back to Durham on some backroads for about 2 and a half hours. The Breakfast Ride for August will be 9:30 on Sunday morning on August 26 th at the Old South Restaurant in Creedmoor. In regards to Triathlons, the Falls Lake Triathlon will be on Saturday, October 6th and we have been asked to provide motorcycle escorts for that race. The Ramblin Rose Triathlon is scheduled the next day on October 7 th in Chapel Hill, but we have not been formally asked to help with this race at the present time. More information will follow as the triathlon details are finalized. Don t forget to pre-register for Wings over the Smokies. September 27-29, 2018 in Maggie Valley. Terry and I will be leaving from Cookout on Hillsborough Road in Durham on Thursday morning around 9:00if you want to ride up with us. We will probably stop for lunch on the way up. 5 W hen you own a Gold Wing, you like to dress it up and proudly show it off. In my case, I was handed down my husband s 1994 GL1500, so I had to change things a bit just to make it mine. I started by having a complete custom console kit done by Wing Bling. Mike and Carla Rubin, the owners, are very nice and fun to work with helpful but not pushy. I was so proud and happy showing off my new ride. Then in June 2009, I had a serious accident. Luckily, there was no frame or motor damage, however most of the plastics were destroyed. My repair facility ordered all that was needed to fix my baby back up, but there was a slight problem: the color didn t quite match. I assumed it was due to fading of the older parts. Now, two years after this accident, I was at another rally and Mike said to bring my bike over for their display. When he looked at it he remarked, What is wrong with your bike? I reminded him of the accident and said that it was just sun faded. No way! was his reply. Well, this is when you find out just how reputable a company can be. Mike said that he would replace International Rusti Boykin Member Article From August 2014 the entire console kit at no cost to me. I was so shocked. Knowing that this issue wasn t entirely his fault made me feel a bit uneasy, so Mike came up with a new plan that I could feel good about. He would do the kit and I could pay half of the installation cost. Keeping to his word, in July at Wing Ding 35, Mike and his crew installed the new matching kit. My ride is once again beautiful! Mike and Carla stood behind their product and reputation, and they are a vendor that all of us should be proud and happy to do business with. July1, 2018 Page 5
6 And the Hats We Wear W hether we are aware of it or not, when talking and working with others, we may wear a different hat based on what we are trying to accomplish. In Lead Like You Ride, as well as, The Instructor Training and Certification Program, GWRRA staff identify six different hats we may wear. Probably the most frequent hat we use is the one for the Teacher. We want to help the members learn something or are trying to give the group information. We want them to know; we want to pass on what we know or have learned to them. This role is used for planning and organization, as well as, presentations. It is used at our monthly Gatherings and anytime we want to convey information to another. A Facilitator helps an individual apply the new knowledge they have learned. They guide the process and the skill. Their goal is outcomebased to have the person demonstrate they can perform the task we have asked them to learn. The facilitator is totally involved in the process, helping to set the pace and guide it. We also wear this hat when we are involved in conflict resolution and intervention. It helps solve problems. When we are a Trainer we not only help develop skills, we reinforce learned skills. We attempt to make someone proficient with additional practice and instruction. You and the member are goal oriented and want the member to be able to District Tom and Carol Scully NC District University Coordinators demonstrate the skill to the best of their ability. You wear the Coach and Mentor hat when you are a resource that others come to for personal growth and to further improve skills. Though they understand the basic information, they may need more in depth discussions with another. The Coach and Mentor advise and guide others by working to improve skills and visibly change the performance of others. We hope that through an awareness of the different hats you wear, you may be better able to help the members and others. Tom and Carol Scully NC District University Coordinators The Instructor hat is used in the customary how you do it conversation. It uses and gives practical knowledge that anyone can use. We use it when we want someone to understand a new concept or try to develop a new skill. You use this hat anytime you give instructions, directions or an explanation on how to do something. You should use clear directions and concise communications. We know we have been a good instructor when the member understands what we need them to do. More pictures from the Breakfast Ride. 9 (Continued from page 4) for suggestions! The return ride will probably leave around 9:00 from the Comfort Inn in Maggie Valley. We will firm up that departure time once we all get there for the rally. MSF says: THE MORE YOU KNOW, THE BETTER IT GETS! SID says: THE MORE YOU PRAC- TICE WHAT YOU KNOW, THE BET- TER YOU GET! Sid presents Road Captain patches to Keith and Dan. Chapter A receives the Cdentral Traveler plaque.
