Tillman & Janet Hill July 2013 Greetings to Chapter NC-I HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA, JULY 4TH Independence day commonly knows at THE FOURTH OF JULY is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. A remarkable coincidence, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence and later went on to be president both died on July 4th, James Monroe, not a signer of the Declaration but was a Founding Father, died on 7/4/1831 thus becoming the 3rd President in a row to die on July 4th. Just a little history that we are sure you all know but this gives us the opportunity to remember some historical facts. We hope each of you have your bikes/trikes ready to go and have plans to do a lot of riding this summer. If you have trips planned or decide to just wing it (oh no, sorry about that) make sure you are prepared. Always bring along your Gold Book, make sure you have all you need to have a safe enjoyable ride. The gremlins have certainly been at our house this past month. Two computers crashed and a TV that is included in a class action law suit. Desktop computer less than two years old and has already been sent back to HP three times. Laptop that is about two years old crashed. Repairman has now fixed the TV. Actually we are almost afraid to touch anything electronic. It was great to see so many of you at the May meeting. We were happy to see Tom & Dina Towey, it is always good to see them and find out all about upcoming events. Tom & Terri Pennoni from Mooresville Chapter L- 2 came carrying the Couples Plaque which went to Monroe Y-2. We also had visitors from Morganton Chapter Y. We are always glad to have other chapters attend our meetings. Janet was alone to hold the May meeting. Thanks David for helping her out, as I rode in the Vetrans day parade in Burnsville. This was the first year that I was able to ride as registration begins at 10am and the parade at noon and our breakfast and meeting starts at 9:00am. It was very rewarding. There were somewhere around 175 bikes. Chapter Directors Safety is always FIRST Three Goldwings and the remainder Harleys. We rode around the square and then went on an hour ride. They take the same route each year and there were many people on the sides of the road waiting for us to go by. We need to have more Goldwing s there next year. If our monthly meeting happens to fall on the same date maybe we can change it to another Saturday and all join the ride. At our June meeting Tom Towey held a class on Motorist Awareness. This is a class that is required one time only. Most classes have to be renewed every three years. We are very fortunate that Tom is now a qualified instructor and will be able to teach any classes that we need. Our picnic at Pink Beds was a lot of fun. Many thanks to Lura & David for all their hard work and generosity. After we had our regular meeting and our class we headed out for the picnic and ice cream afterwards. Please don t forget to send in your registration for WONC. Only members that are fully registered and are going to work will get shirts. We have received the form to complete and return to Gail Simpson by the tenth of August as to how many people will be able to work. So please let us know if you will be attending and have paid your registration fees so we can send the order in on time. We do not know where we will be assigned until after the meeting on the 28th of July. As soon as we get this information we will put out a work schedule for everyone to choose their days and times. We hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday. Ride safe and always be aware of your surroundings. WE WISH ALL OF YOU A SAFE AND HAPPY RIDING SEASON Tillman and Janet Hill GWRRA Chapter NC-I CD

July, 2013 Greetings to all. It is finally officially summer, and I trust that Al & Jean Warren means you are putting lots of miles on your 2- or 3- wheelers. With the rainy weekends of late, it has been difficult for those of us still gainfully employed to get out very much, but it sure looks like Larry has been providing some great mid-week rides. Thank you so much, Larry. And if any of you are not getting a notice from Larry about the rides and you would like to have one, just let him know and he ll be more than happy to add you to the distribution list. I heard one member tell him this last week that he was not getting the notices, so Larry quickly rectified that. CO-Assistant Chapter Directors It s Time To Ride if the Weather gets Ready The weekend of July will be the Cherokee trip. Several are going along for at least part of the weekend, so if you find that your plans have changed and you are now available, give me a call and I ll get you the details. The plan is to ride Saturday, then go to Cherokee for the outdoor drama, Trail of Tears, then head for a motel just down the street. Sunday, if the weather is cooperative, we ll do some more riding on the way home, and not just hit the freeway. It promises to be a great weekend, so come join us. The chapter ride in August is planned to hit Smoky Mountain National Park over to Gatlinburg, and then home again. It promises to be yet another super ride, so be sure to set aside August 10 for that ride and come join us. We always have a great time. Remember, if you re not riding with us, you are depriving the rest of us of the pleasure of your company, as well as the chance to enjoy the great out-of-doors together with a truly great group of people. Hope to see you out there. This last Saturday we left after the meeting and took a short ride up the BRP and down US 276 to the Pink Beds, where a great picnic was presented by our MEC s, David and Lura. I believe there were about 30 of us there, and we all had a terrific time. Thanks, folks. Of course, after that some of us just HAD to stop at Dolly s to get some ice cream, because we all know that a Gold Wing outing isn t complete until there s ice cream, right? See you soon on a ride. On Saturday, July 6, Charles Cox is going to lead a group of anyone who wants to go to Wing Ding in Greenville, SC. Details of departure time and place will be announced shortly. On Saturday, July 13, we ll be attempting once more to get in our trip to Morganton, Banner Elk and the Parkway. Details will be sent out shortly about meeting time and place for the departure, so keep watch of your . Enjoy the Ride and ride often Al & Jean Warren GWRRA Chapter NC-I Co ACD GWRRA Chapter NC-I Ride Coordinator

C h a r t e r C o - A C D & E d u c a t o r s How to Avoid Stinging Insects Ronnie & Lisa LaFountain Hi All: You probably spend more of your attention avoiding misguided cars and trucks but there are smaller hazards flying around this time of year that are capable of inflicting serious pain: stinging insects. They re scary-looking, determined and very aggressive if provoked. Think of our buzzing friends as very small children: No matter what protective measures we take, they get into places they shouldn t. When some sixlegged interloper infiltrates your helmet, leathers, jacket or pants, bad things can happen. Every rider has a story about an agitated arthropod invading his or her personal space. Such tales are amusing, but riders who are sensitive to insect venom can end up in serious trouble. Some experience an allergic or anaphylactic reaction to the sting, sometimes in very short order. See your doctor for a test if you re not sure. Reactions vary by insect species, and the location of the sting can increase the severity of the problem. Symptoms of a potentially lifethreatening allergic reaction can include feelings of anxiety, disorientation, difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat or airway, hoarse/thick speech, nausea, vomiting, hives and chest pain. Many people who have a known allergy to a given insect toxin are prepared with self-administered emergency medications like Epinephrine in the form of what s commonly known as an EpiPen. If someone you re riding with displays any signs or symptoms of allergic reaction after being stung, call for help immediately. Reactions to insect stings can be lifethreatening, so dial 911 now! Resist the urge to flag down a passing car and cart your friend to the nearest hospital unless you know exactly where you re going. Paramedics carry all the necessary medications and equipment. Assist the victim with their auto-injector if they have one, and wait for the cavalry to arrive. If you ride with someone who carries self-administered emergency medication, ask them to show you how it s used. A rational approach to riding gear is important as well. Short sleeves are an open invitation to our pollinating friends. A full-face helmet, solid jacket, long pants, boots and gloves are a good first line of defense, but they re no guarantee. You don t need a suit of armor for every ride, but dressing smart and being aware of which stinging species are likely to be in the air at that time of the day or year can reduce painful human/insect contact. Ride long enough and getting stung is inevitable. When it happens, staying calm and taking control are the keys to keeping yourself upright. That critter didn t plan to crash-land on your leathers, but now he s mad, and his natural reaction is to sting you. Pull over safely, take off your jacket, helmet or wherever the insect has gone and take it from there. Thinking things through and planning ahead can help prevent your nice, relaxing motorcycle ride from turning into a panic-stricken ambulance ride. Remember, when you are riding a motorcycle, you need to be defensive. It could mean your life. Enjoy the Ride & Ride Smart Ronnie & Lisa LaFountain GWRRA Chapter NC-I

Membership Enhancement Coordinators Summer is Here are you GOING July, 2013 Hi Everyone, Don t forget that Wing Ding is coming in July 3-6 in Greeneville, S.C. Also, our Wings Over North Carolina will be September in Concord, N.C. And there are Thursday bike nights at MR Honda on Hendersonville Rd. So many things to do just pick one and do it. In the meantime, Now it s time for a road trip! David & Lura Newman Mother Nature: she really does love us.. or not. One day it s beautiful riding weather, and of course that s the day we re working in the yard. The next day we re planning a bike ride and, you guessed it, it s raining. Now some of you diehards will say so, just suit up in your rain gear and go riding. We ll that is of course an option, but not for us wimps; also known as (AKA) fair weather riders. One day we ll break that wimpy mold, but until then we ll just go to the movies on rainy days. Nothing is better than movies and popcorn on a day of rain and thunder boomers. Of course that has nothing to do with the joys of riding, but it is a close second for some of us. Speaking of riding, Al set up a nice ride after our last meeting, heading over to the Pink Beds in Pisgah Forest. Now that we are into July (what happened to June?) we ll have more rides coming up; second Saturday ride and of course a ride after our chapter meeting on the fourth Saturday. In addition, Al and Jean have planned a great ride at the end of the month which will wind us through the mountains and end up that same day in Cherokee. Many folks will spend the night there to enjoy the story of Unto These Hills. In between all these happenings we ll have Cook s Night Out on the second Monday night at YAOs Asian restaurant on Smoky Park Hwy (Hwy 19/23) in Asheville. We will send out reminders to everyone about that. Our Ice Cream social in July will be part of the Cherokee weekend ride; to be decided upon and announced later. Stay Safe in your Travels Lura & David Newman GWRRA Chapter NC-I MEC

COME RIDE WITH or US MISS OUT ON THE FUN Each day the percent chance of rain for this Saturday is dropping. By Saturday, we should be in a full-fledged drought! We will be leaving from the TBA SHARP! We'll be making several loops and turns, and some downhill rides, so be prepared for a real jewel of a ride. Lunch and 2 breaks are included in the time, which he estimates is about 7 hours total. As always, there are opportunities to break off and return home earlier if you can only ride part of the day, but we sure hope you can make the whole trip with us. For those who might be interested, ICE CREAM is included at the end of the ride! So, barring the kind of weather that we have been suffering through, we'll hope to get out of here on Saturday and do some fun riding together. Hope to see you there. If you have any questions, or call me or David and we'll get you some answers.
