Tillman and Janet Hill GWRRA Chapter NC-I CD August, 2017 Hi All, As you all know GWRRA will reorganize 1/1/2018. Hopefully all of you have received and reviewed the and attachments. We will have a staff meeting as soon as we can get the staff members together. After the staff has met we will have a chapter meeting and we would like all of you to attend. This chapter meeting will not be our monthly meeting, but a special meeting just for Chapter I members to discuss the GWRRA reorganization. We had a very busy and fun filled month in July. August should be another great month for our members. Our second Saturday ride will be a progressive dinner ride. We will eat: Hors-d oeuvres Dave & Bonnie Cole Lunch Jerry & Brenda Pitts Desert Joy & Bill Lee Our after meeting ride will be a fun ride for any of our members that just enjoy riding with their friends. Our new Ride Captain, Johnny Johnson, will be scheduling his adventure rides for any of you that have open days and would like to ride with him. As you know we will be the chapter that will plan and lead the rides for WOTS. So far district has told us that we have ten (10) pre-registered riders. I feel that if district would have published where and how the rides were going we would have had a better response, hopefully we will have more riders sign up to ride with us. As you know we will have a tour table set up at WOS to sign up for the rides. I would like to thank our members that have stepped up for Jerry Pitts and volunteered to escort the bicycles on the Lake Logan Triathlon. All of our members should give a special thanks for these guys that take the time and effort to escort these athletes. As always thanks to all of our special friends and members for making Chapter I what we are today. Ride Safe, Janet and Tillman 2

C h a p t e r E d u c a t o r Janet Hill August, 2017 When your re hot,you re hot It s 90 to 100 degrees and you decide to take a ride on your bike. All at once you see other people staring at you in disbelief. They are looking out of the windows of their air conditioned cars or sitting in an air conditioned restaurant and, I am sure, trying to understand why anyone could tolerate being outside during a heat wave, bundled in heavy riding gear. And I, as I am riding pass a rider in the opposite lane, see his jacket bungeed on the back, his bare chest is exposed to the hot blast of the heat and wind. I wave, but there is no response. His skin is red and he doesn t appear to have noticed me. Now let me tell you this is a bad sign. A sign that he is on the fringe of heat exhaustion. I am now in hot weather survival mode. Full riding gear, including riding pants, leather boots, gloves and a neck cooler saturated with water. As soon as the fabric dries out I open my shield squirt ice cold water from my water bottle down my chin and slam the face shield shut. The water runs down my chin and on my shirt. In about 10 seconds after the water penetrates the neck cooler, it cools from evaporation in the hot air and sucks some heat out of my neck. I make sure I stop at a fast food store every few miles to replenish my water and ice. You must protect your core organs from heat stress. Your body has an automatic thermostat. If you don t keep the core temperature within the redline, the body will give you warnings, such as heat cramps. And it you don t take care of the problem, it will get more serious, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. HEAT EXHAUSTION occurs as the body continues to shunt blood away from the brain and muscles. SYMPTOMS of heat exhaustion include headache, dizziness, nausea, cramps, tiredness, weakness, profuse sweating, pale clammy skin. If you feel any of these symptoms, find shade, loosen clothes and wet down skin, slowly sip water. If you feel faint, lie down. Avoid alcohol or caffeine. You may need to take a salt water solution. (recommended first aid dose is ½ teaspoon of table salt per half glass of water every 15 minutes) If you experience heat exhaustion and try to tough out the heat without getting cooled down and re-hydrate, the body thermostat will begin to fail, core temperature continues to rise, sweating stops, the heart beats faster and you pass out. You need to get immediate medical aid before the latter happens or hope you have a co-rider or friend with you. Heat strokes are life 3

threatening. Not only should you watch for these sign for yourself but keep an eye on other riders. Do route planning, in general it is cooler in higher elevations. Adjust your riding schedule. Try not to ride in the heat of the day. Remember insulate your skin from the sun and hot air, use evaporative cooling vests and neck coolers, and drink lots of water. And, oh yes, learn to ignore the stares of other motorist and bikers who think you are crazy to wear heavy gear on a hot day. We need to sweat to keep the skin moist. The evaporating sweat sucks heat from the skin and transfers it to the air. Of course sweat is primarily water so we need to keep replenishing the supply. That s one reason we need to drink about a pint of water every hour during hot dry conditions. Ride safe and always be aware of your surroundings. Janet Hill GWRRA Chapter NC-I Educator 4

Membership Enhancement Coordinator Charles Weinhagen August, 2017 We have had some good numbers of members and friends attending our functions last month in July. Our Friends Night Out at Stone Road Restaurant had 32 attend and enjoy good food; fellowship and OMG yes even a few brave Gold Wingers sang Karaoke Born to Be Wild. We had 16 attend the Summer Monthly Ice Cream Social at Jack the Dipper in Waynesville and at the Monthly Meeting there were 28 members and 6 guests. There are certainly many things that can be said about Chapter NC-I and the best is that our chapter is very active, organized and well attended ( do you hear that Phoenix? ) Born To Be Wild Looking on in amazement By the time you read this we will probably have had our Progressive Lunch/Dinner Ride and I suspect a good time was had by all. Don t forget the total solar eclipse on Monday August 21st. They say our area will be the best viewing area in the country so get your Eclipse glasses and head for the Blue Ridge Parkway but expect crowds and lots of traffic. Check out these websites for more info: NORTH CAROLINA Again, here is a state that will have only a fraction of its area hit by the shadow - but what an area! The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, or at least the western part of it, lies in the path of totality! If you can't get to the Tetons, here is perhaps just as wonderful a spot to watch the eclipse from! But you have to be careful here - the whole park is not in totality, and the park is so big, that it really depends on where you are as to how much time you'll get in the shadow! We already talked about Knoxville not getting totality - well, Gatlinburg is outside the 7

path completely! In fact, if you're east of that big north-south road that cuts the park in two (is it 441 or 71?), then you won't see any totality at all. Get as far west as you can, out to the mountains in the western part of the park. On the southern edge, Waynesville is a no-no - get farther west to Bryson City or even farther west to Santeetlah Lake. You get the idea. If National Parks and eclipse-watching don't go together for you, then you can also see totality in Murphy (2m26s at 2:34pm), Andrews (2m38s at 2:34pm), or Franklin (2m30s at 2:35). Other than that, all we can say is that Charlotte is not in the path! Get into SC, down to Greenville or Columbia! Oh yes, Asheville is also not in the path! So IF YOU ARE IN CHARLOTTE OR ASHEVILLE, the eclipse will never be total for you! You will need to use your eclipse glasses for the entire partial eclipse! Be Safe, Ride Often and Live Life to the Fullest! Stay Safe in your Travels Charles Weinhagen GWRRA Chapter NC-I MEC

Ride & Planning Coordinators Dave & Diane Smith August, 2017 Hi All, The rain has not slowed up much but it has not kept NC-I from putting on some miles. The second Sat. ride to Boone was well attended with 15 of us making the trip. For several of us it was the first time we had been to Daniel Boone Inn. All I can say is that if you left hungry, there is no one to blame but yourself. The food just keep coming and coming until there was no room on the table to add another dish. We were blessed with a light shower during lunch. LOL Pulling out of the parking lot, most of the group was suited up in rain gear. We stopped around 50 miles down the road for a short break and most of the group shed their frogg toggs despite the dark clouds overhead. As the group headed off in different directions the race was on to beat the rain home. The forecast was for heavy thunderstorms and the white lines were zipping under our boots very quickly. Most of us pulled into the garage moments before the heavy stuff came pouring down. Jerry and Brenda hit some light rain but were able to get the garage door down just as the skies opened all the way up. Charles was not as fortunate as it started raining on him at Bat Cave. By the time he reached Hendersonville it was raining so hard that he had to stop at a gas station for quite a while. Thankfully, Charles did make it home safely as did everyone in our group. FNO was another success with 33 of us in attendance. It is safe to say that NC-I pretty much took over the whole restaurant. If all those motorcycles parked outside were not enough to scare the locals off, then we had another trick up our sleeve. Larry and I did a fantastic rendition of Born to be Wild at the Karaoke Bar and may actually take it on the road. How does that go, we are a legend in our own minds. LOL It was good to see Mickey and Rob there after their recent falls. If it sounds like you are missing out on the fun, well if you didn t make it, you certainly are. However, there are still plenty of opportunities to get in on the action. 10

Chapter Overnight Ride Hi All, I want you to take a journey with me. Imagine that you have just finished washing your Wing. There is a soft rag in your hand; it s faded from lots of use. There are a few water spots on the side of the trunk and they are quickly removed. Moving forward to the side covers, the mind drifts back to the latest overnight ride. Stepping outside the sun feels warm on your cheek and the grips feel soft not hard like they do when the weather is cold. As your co-rider appears she is carrying her luggage for you to put into the saddlebag. She slips on her full face helmet to go. Man does she look good. The boots the jeans and there is just something really sexy about those full face helmets. Must be those eyes looking right at you with just a little shock of hair exposed. It feels good sitting on the seat blipping the throttle with her right behind me. We ride together to the jump off point. Coming down the road you strain to see who s there. Let s see, there are 2 two wheelers and three trikes. Oh yes, I can tell there at two red ones and two silver and one black. By now I see the group milling around talking and we know every one of them. Standing around at the rider meeting, kind of half listening, I look over at the Wing. Yep I did a good job getting her all cleaned up for the weekend. Soon everyone is on their bike, we raise our hand for the radio check and we are off. It is a good day. We ride past brooks and streams. The patches of clouds form different designs. I reach forward and change the music as the ride leader calls out 3 5 coming into a 35 mph zone probably some little town. Sure enough there is one traffic light, we pass homes where lawns are getting mowed and ladies are working on flower beds. After lunch where the Wings are all lined up in a row like soldiers ready to go, we head back out on the highway. It s early afternoon and the sun is high overhead. We look like a long snake twisting its way through the turns each one with a different radius some requiring downshifting others just full on throttle control. After a couple of hours the group arrives in Crossville, TN. We mill around in the lobby as we get checked into the Comfort Suite and Inn. It s late afternoon and some will go to the model railroad museum while others will simply take a nap. I dig out the old faded rag and wipe down the Wing just to get the grime off. I really don t need to do that since it still looks good but I just want to give it a little attention. It s time for dinner and we walk hand in hand me and my honey over to the Brass Lantern. Everyone is in good spirits and laughing and joking and telling stories albeit they have 12

been embellished over the years. No one cares, we still laugh at the same ole jokes. After dinner we ride the 15 min. to the Cumberland County Playhouse. They are doing The Drowsy Chaperone, a musical comedy with some entertaining adult themes. The show is good and by the time we finish putting the cover on the Wing for the night we are ready to get a good night s sleep. I put my head down on the pillow knowing that the Wing is waiting in the parking lot for us to fire her up in the morning and enjoy another fantastic day of riding with good friends on the way home. I shake my head and get back to focusing on those water spots on the front fender. This has not happened yet. However, on the weekend of Oct 7 & 8 your NC-I staff is going to make this happen. Here are the details. Comfort Suites and Inn Cost is $ tax Total = $ this price includes military, law enforcement, AAA, AARP discounts this is being done through our GWRRA discount program and there will be no other discounts. To reserve a room let Janet Hill or Dave Smith know. That is all you need to do. You will pay for the room upon arrival. All rooms are King size beds. If you reserve a room and choose to cancel you must cancel by OCT 1 or you will be obligated to pay for the room. Cumberland County Playhouse 931/ Oct 7 Cost is $27 for seniors Everyone will need to make their own individual reservations if you decide to attend the play. It was not possible for NC-I to make a group reservation. If you need to cancel your reservation you must do so by OCT 1. Well I did a good job of cleaning up my Wing. I need to put this ole rag away and go in the house and start making phone calls. Hope to see each and every one of you there. Remember: Without you the party won t get started. 14 August NC-I Chapter Member Profile of the Month *Where were you born? Atlanta *Are you married? Yes. Meet Member Jerry Pitts *For How Long? My wife Brenda and I have been married 34 years. *Where did you meet? We met in Atlanta in 1979 while we were both studying for the series 7 exam (which is tough) to become stockbrokers. At the time she lived in Dayton Ohio and I lived in Albany Georgia. During the week we were there we fell in love. *What is or was your life s Career? I spent the remainder of my working life, 30 years, as a Financial Advisor and Portfolio Manager for Smith Barney and predecessor firms in Pensacola Fl. I retired in 2008 at 59 and ½. *How long have you been riding motorcycles? My first ride was a 1953 Allstate scooter (Made by Cushman) when I was 14. I used it for a 20 mile paper route where we lived out in the country. I put many miles on that scooter and loved it dearly. I found a restored model of the bike at the Barber Museum. In later years I had a 350 Honda and a 750 Kawasaki. In the early 70 s when I got married and thinking about children I stopped riding. Not to ride again until we moved, after we moved to Maggie Valley. In 2005 I bought a HD Heritage Soft tail. It was not comfortable for Brenda so in 2007 I bought a HD Road King. In 2011 I traded up to a HD Road Glide, which is the HD version of a Goldwing with a fairing fixed to the frame. *When did you get your first Goldwing? By 2013 my legs had weakened to the point we decided to get a Goldwing Trike. We decided what we could spend and Brenda started shopping on line. She was very excited about getting a bike I could not drop. I came home one afternoon and she announced Honey I bought us a Trike. The deal was made; all I had to do was transfer the money and ride it home. *How long have you been a GWRRA member? We knew we wanted a Goldwing Trike and joined GWRRA before we had one, at the 2013 Wing Ding in Greenville SC. *In your own words, what is you claim to fame and or what would you like people to know about you? If I have anything that relates to a claim to fame it is that I have had more fun in my life than any one person deserves. *If you thought anyone would listen, what advice would you give them? The one piece of advice I could give, if anyone cared, is to be sure you have a little fun every day. *If you could have dinner with ANYONE past or present who would it be? Now remember I spent my life studying Economics and have a good understanding of the dismal science. The person I would most like to have dinner with is President Obama. (He inherited a housing crisis and recession not seen since He led the housing market to a rebirth and brought unemployment down from 9.5% to 4.6% which is considered normal employment. I am not asking you to agree with me, but I believe he will be remembered as one of our greatest Presidents for his economic leadership and his attempt to create a national health care system which I feel is sorely needed.) 14

Lake Logan Triathlon Again, this year our chapter will provide escorts for the bicycle portion of the Lake Logan Triathlon held on Saturday, August 5 and Sunday August 6. This is one of our chapters primary fund-raising events. Our chapter will be paid $500 for providing the escort service, so please volunteer to be an escort rider. We will need 9 riders on Saturday and 5 on Sunday. The event starts at 7am both days, and should be over on Saturday by about 12 noon, and earlier on Sunday. On Saturday, we need two riders on 2 wheels to host race officials. We will not need to provide rides for the race officials on Sunday. No special skills are required. You do have to have a CB radio on you bike. There will be a pre-ride the week before to show the route and explain the duties of the escorts. Basically, the escorts will ride in a specific area watching these fit young people compete, and report any issues to the race officials. I have found to be interesting and fun over the past several years. Let me know if you are willing to join us at jerrypitts@bellsouth.net or Thanks, Jerry Pitts 15
