3 UPCOMING CHRISTMAS CRAFT SALE This will be the first year for the Christmas Craft show, but we were out of tables before the Fall Festival, so I expect a great event and a fun time. This would be a great time to reduce your Christmas list by shopping for a unique handmade item from a vendor who has put their heart and soul into their product. We will also have snacks and drinks. 5 RECENT EVENTS SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014 FALL FESTIVAL SEPTEMBER 28 TH The Fall Festival was held too late to make the September Newsletter, but was a truly awesome event. We were delighted to sample 6 varieties of chili, from mild to hot, and hotter. The winner of this chili feast was Livia McCracken, first prize (a $30.00 gift certificate from Lowes) with 13 votes and an empty crock pot. Next in the contest was Cindi Savage with 7 votes, worth a $20.00 certificate from Lowes. Our ticket sales did well, with donations contributed from retail stores in Monterey, as well as our own vendors. Homeowners in the Cove donated cakes, pies, cookies, and some truly terrific down-south cornbread I took on the job of sampling each. It was a beautiful day, with plant sales on the front porch, the Welcome Center packed with vendors surrounded by anxious buyers (and signing up again for next year s Fall Festival), and Randy Westerveldt (local beekeeper) doing a brisk business selling honey on the back porch. Compliments were ed to me all week about how wonderfully fun and even better this Festival was than last year s. Now that is what I am talking about!!!

6 BRIDGE REPLACEMENT OVER BRIDGE CREEK Fourteen people assembled at Overlook Park early on the 14 th. These included Scott Anderson, Bonnie Basler, Brad Beatty, Rick Birchler, Roger Bumgarner, Jerry Fisher, Tom Haggard, Chuck Knarr, Ed McSweeny, Carlo Sanchez, Al Singleton, John Snope, Pat Sueberkrop, and Ric Young. Rick Birchler was the overall project manager. He designed the replacement span, cut all the materials to size and marked them to facilitate assembly, brought them to the park, and worked out a general plan of attack. By 0830, tools and materials were moving down the trail in a steady line. Some of the longer planks (up to 16 ) were allowed to take their own path down the steeper portions, and the occasional ricochet kept everyone on their toes. As soon as most of the gear was assembled at the bridge, preliminary demolition of the old span took place, removing hand rails and other obstructions to leave a clear space for assembly of the new support beams. As soon as there was space, Scott Anderson and Roger Bumgarner took charge of assembling the laminated joists which formed the main full-length supports. Bonnie Basler spread construction adhesive between laminations while Scott and Roger screwed things together. Several of us gofers pushed, pulled, or lifted things into alignment under their direction, and offered advice which was politely declined. These guys really knew what they were doing. Meanwhile, Brad Beatty, Chuck Knarr, Ric Young, Jerry Fisher and Al Singleton were progressively demolishing the remains of the short span replaced two years ago, while everyone else helped where needed, mostly moving debris. As soon as the main beams were completed, they were set to the side (still spanning the gap) and demolition of the old main section began. The tree trunks which formed the original supports were rotted along the top where the deck boards were bolted down, but otherwise were surprisingly sound. A fire was started in a depression next to the stream and the debris was fed in batches, so the old was being consumed while the new structure was growing. Al Singleton was Fire Marshall, with spray backpacks at the ready. When the span was clear, the new beams were moved into place, lined up, levelled, braced, and connected to the short span at the far end. The last task was screwing down the new deckboards. The task was finished, the site cleaned up, and people and tools were back on top by 4:00 pm. This was an impressive example of what can be accomplished with careful planning, good preparation, a few competent people in key tasks, and a willing labor pool. Aside from casual banter (plentiful), there was very little discussion as the work proceeded, and everything went very smoothly. The photos give some idea of the tasks Photos by Brad Beatty and Ed McSweeny.

8 FIREWISE OPEN HOUSE AND EQUIPMENT DEMO On Friday afternoon, the 24 th of October, Al Singleton, chairman of the Firewise committee, assisted by other members of the committee and three representatives from the Forestry Firewise program, held an open house at the Eagle Flight Park maintenance building. They had on exhibit and demonstrated the use of various pieces of equipment, including hand operated and back-pack sprayers, the Putnam County tanker, etc. Many residents were happy to see the chipper back again, overhauled, shiny, and ready to go. The baked goods prepared by Al Singleton before daylight Friday morning were outstanding (talk about dedication!). The makings of a big fire were in place, and we thought we were going to get to see the equipment in action, but it was decided to save that for the Saturday morning breakfast. The highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of a plaque to Gary Peach for his years of dedication to the Cove, including initiating the firewise program, maintaining the equipment, teaching the rest of us how to use it, and generally being the go-to man around here. Many thanks, Gary. Photos by Lynn Parker
