Letter from the President By Debbie Melgar, Cumberland Cove POA President Last month, I welcomed the new Board Members and thanked the outgoing Board Members. While writing that article, I accidentally left out one of the outgoing Board Members. So, I would like to correct that and thank Don Hammond for his time and contribution to the Board. November was a very busy month. We had an informational meeting with Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) Officer Ben Layton and Wildlife Services Specialist Josh Cox about the wild boars in the Cove. They provided a very detailed insight into the wild boar problem, and there was a lot of good questions asked by the residents. One resident asked if the boars could be poisoned. Both TWRA representatives said there is no poison and advised against putting any type of poison out. Other wildlife not intended for the poison could ingest it. We will try to track the sightings and damage the boars are causing. Any information concerning sightings can be forwarded to the POA (cumberlandcovepoa@frontiernet.net). If you missed the meeting, we were able to live stream it on the Bulletin Board, and it is available for viewing. The Veterans Day Program was held on November 11th at the Welcome Center. A number of our resident Veterans attended as well as Cove residents to honor our veterans. During the program two of our long-term, recently deceased residents, Larry Drysdale (Air Force) and Gene Sarazon (Air Force), were recognized. The annual Thanksgiving Dinner was held on Sunday, November 19th with 90 residents attending. There were plenty of delicious turkey that was smoked or roasted the traditional way and plenty of side dishes and delicious desserts. The Activities Committee did a great job putting it all together with the decorating, setting up, and rounding up the turkey cookers, who I might add did a superb job! The next Activity will be the Holiday Open House scheduled for December 16th so look for the announcement for that. Unfortunately, with the good comes the bad. On Friday, November 17th, the POA was the victim of a burglary. The shed behind the Welcome Center and the deck box on the back porch were pried open. The good news is that it doesn t appear that anything was taken. We did have damage when the subjects' vehicle got stuck in the mud in the back by the high grass. In an effort for the subjects to get away, they used everything they could find to get their vehicle out of the mud and left quite a mess. The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office responded, and the incident is under investigation. If you haven t noticed or been to the Welcome Center lately, Mike Deonna and the road crew filled most the large holes at the entrance and at the beginning of our parking lot. Thank you, now we don t have to worry Page 2 of 14

the beginning of our parking lot. Thank you, now we don t have to worry about falling into them and never being seen again. Gregg UT Gardens-Crossville: Plateau Discovery Gardens Classes in the Garden We just completed our 2017 season of Classes at the Gardens with one of our most popular classes, Identification of the trees of the Cumberland Plateau. Master Gardener, Sid Morgan developed this class 4 years ago by receiving permission to clear several short trails in the wooded area adjacent to the Gardens from Plateau Research and Education Center Page 7 of 14

adjacent to the Gardens from Plateau Research and Education Center Director Walt Hitch. The class, which is offered twice each fall, begins with the ID of our (now) famous Kentucky Coffee tree just outside the main building, then a short walk through a small stand of dogwoods to board the wagon for the balance of the class. With several stops along the way, attendees get on a first name basis (common and Latin) with most of the indigenous trees living along the ponds and fields of the outer reaches of the Center. The last stop is usually at the apple orchard where the Hardy Cumberland apple was developed. Unfortunately, this apple, although delicious, does not ship well so it is mainly grown in the local area. Sid had a full wagon for each of these classes this year so we are hoping he will agree to do them again next year. We are planning for 2018 classes now with 50 plus events and classes this year. All of the classes are based on topics, which our attendees have requested on the evaluations at each class. We are reaching out to Master Gardeners in adjacent counties this year to tap into their knowledge and hope to add to the From Garden to Table series with some Art in the Garden. We plan to repeat the succulent wreath class, which combines information on how to grow and maintain various succulents with the popular craft of wreath making. Just as a Garden is always growing, so is the education at UT Gardens in Crossville. The complete schedule will be posted on our website ccmga.org as well as our Facebook Discovery Gardens! Bev Beers, CCMGA Communications, ccmgnews@gmail.com, Plateau Discovery Gardens, 320 Experiment Station Road, Crossville, TN phone: Donated Books at the Welcome Center Submitted by Gail Haggard, POA Board Member There are many resident-donated books in the Welcome Center for you to borrow. We have mystery, suspense, romance, biographical, educational and books on various religious topics. In an attempt to keep the book case organized, we are asking members to place all donated or previously borrowed book on the lower-right shelf. Please feel free to stop by to browse the selection of books. There are no return policies on borrowed books. Take a book, bring in a book, and enjoy. Thank you. Focus on Cumberland County Animal Shelter Page 8 of 14

Animal Shelter By Mark Hendrixson, MD, VP FOCCAS FOCCAS -Focus on Cumberland County Animal Shelter is a 501(c)3 public charity dedicated to the promotion and support of a resident and visitor friendly new shelter...to inspire our community to cultivate the values of kind, compassionate, responsible care of the county's animals. On , FOCCAS received near unanimous approval by the Cumberland County Commission for their contract to move forward on plans for the construction of a Holding and Isolation facility for the Cumberland County Animal Shelter. This will be a companion building to the Adoption Center that the City and the County are presently building. Collectively these buildings will replace the archaic and dilapidated current shelter. We are over the moon about this vote, as it culminates more than a year-long battle with the county government. Many of you recently received a wonderful color brochure for our Capital Campaign. We are very close to our construction target of $290,000. We are looking to raise the remainder and for sponsors for our interior equipment needs. Those needs are detailed inside the brochure or if you have misplaced it, on our capital campaign website, FOCCASbuildingthedream.org. If you are active on FaceBook and considering a donation to FOCCAS, you can double the impact by taking advantage of FB's #GivingTuesday initiative. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is matching donations given to local charities on FB on #GivingTuesday - Nov 28. There is a limit to the contribution to each charity of $50,000. There is a limit of $1000 per gift. The matching program starts at 7:00am CST and will continue until $2M has been matched. That is not expected to take very long. FOCCAS will also be participating in the City of Crossville Christmas parade on Sat Dec 9. We will have a float and will be walking many dogs along beside the float. The parade starts at 4:30pm. Come early and enjoy some homemade Chili on the Courthouse lawn in Crossville, from 12-4:30. You will get your chili in a robust keepsake mug with a FOCCAS logo. We will also have a display of our tile project there Tennessee White Tail Deer Hunting Seasons Unit B Young Sportsman Oct , 2017 Page 9 of 14

Try to be sure of the source and direction before reporting them to the Sheriff's Department of your county. Notices Safety & Security The Putnam County Sheriff s Office does vacation home checks for Putnam residents. You need to go to their website: and click on the heading Security Watch. It gives you a form to fill out and file with the SO. The watch is not automatic, but has to be reviewed and approved by them. If approved they will notify you by . In Cumberland County you call their main number (931) and ask for dispatch. You give them your information and they enter it into their Extra Patrol Log. Notice for Home and Property Owners As a reminder, it is very important if you are selling, buying or moving that you contact the Cumberland Cove Welcome Center to provide ownership or address changes. Without your current address information, all correspondence such as annual statements will be sent to the address we have on file. This may cause a delay in receiving your statement for your annual dues. We also keep our Cove phone book updated with this information. We do not know when you move or new ownership takes place, unless you notify us. PLEASE do not rely on Realtors, Attorneys, or Title Offices the pass this information on. We have Welcome Packets for new property/home owners, with useful information in them. So if you are new to Cumberland Cove, please stop by the Welcome Center Monday Friday between 9:00 and 1:00 to receive your welcome packet. Parking Violations RVs, boats, utility trailers, and other equipment According to the Cumberland Cove Covenants 9.4 Parking No truck exceeding one-ton capacity shall be parked, within the Subject Properties Page 10 of 14

exceeding one-ton capacity shall be parked, within the Subject Properties overnight, unless the truck is being used in connection with the construction of a new residential dwelling unit. All other vehicles (except automobiles, SUV s, and small trucks) or equipment must be parked in a garage or hidden from view by neighbors or from the street. Any vehicle parked on a Subject Property must not be a nuisance and must conform to the communities standards for sight, sound, and smell. For further clarification, please see Appendix G in the Environmental Control Committee (ECC) Red Book. The ECC respectfully request that all residents with vehicles and equipment parked on their property take the initiative to insure compliance with this covenant requirement. Please understand that tarpaulins, canvas or plastic RV covers and partial privacy screening do not satisfy this restriction. For advice on compliance solutions, please contact the ECC Chairman, Elton Warren, through the Welcome Center, (931) " Use of Cove Assets and Equipment Cove Assets and equipment are for official Cove use only. Chain saws, weed eaters, the tractor, the truck, and any equipment used by committees are for their official use only. Individuals may NOT borrow the equipment for personal use. Equipment at the POA office including chairs and tables can only be used on premises...they cannot be loaned for off-site use, per the current WC Usage Agreement. The Chipper use is administered by Firewise, and is available for use by those who have taken the required training. Burning in the Cove From October 15, 2017 to May 15, 2018, it is required by law that citizens obtain a burning permit. For a leaf or brush pile less than 8 feet by 8 feet, log onto for approval. For a larger burn, call your local Division of Forestry burn permit number. For Putnam County it is ; for Cumberland County it is "Burning without a permit is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail and/or a fine. Wildfires caused by arson are a Class C felony punishable by 3 to 15 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines. Anyone with information about suspected arson activity should call the state Fire Marshal's Arson Hotline at To report illegal burning, please call TDEC." Source: Herald-Citizen, Sunday, October 15, Page A2. We encourage anyone that is going to burn outdoors to borrow one of our backpack extinguishers. They are very easy to use and they are very effective. Page 11 of 14

We currently have eight of these at the maintenance shed, and we have submitted to Forestry a grant request for eight more. You can contact Al Singleton, Roger Bumgarner, or Mike Deonna, who will get one to you. The welcome Center has their cell phone numbers. The Security Vehicle also has one of the extinguishers. Should there be no one available from the Firewise Committee, contact security and they can provide the extinguisher. It is against our covenants and against state law to leave any fire near a woodland unattended. For suspected violations, please call 911. Firewise Homeowner Safety Guide: Box Tops for Education In 1996 General Mills wanted to create a program to help support education and benefit America s schools - and so, box Tops for Education was born. Initially box tops were only found on select general mills products. The program was such a huge success that it was expanded to include many other products. Box tops can now be found on 100 s of products. Some of the products are cereal, kleenex, green giant and pillsbury just to name a few. A complete list can be found on the Website for Box Tops for Education. Today, America s schools have earned over $719 million. I collect the box tops for Burks Elementary School. Anyone who would like to help me collect Box Tops can leave them at the Welcome Center in the plastic box labeled Box Tops for Education.
