As the Crow Flies The holiday season is upon us now and there is no retreat. We must start planning the family get togethers, which in some families, could be hazardous. You know, the mother-in-law, sisters and brothers that are estranged from the family and all the cooking and mess it entails. Yeah I can hardly wait for all the excitement to happen. Now that I kind of put a negative on the whole holiday thing, let me put some positives in the game. We look forward to visiting our family members and getting together is always a laugh or two. Unlike most perceived families, mine is very rewarding. I have a great mother-in-law and several sisters-in-law and my brother and his wife. I love them all. We do what most people do for the holidays. We try to get together and celebrate the country s Thanksgiving Day. We try to come up with something we are thankful for and pass it along. It seems that most of us are thankful for our families and that we can share our Thanksgiving Day dinner. This year, as we did last year, we are going to add our wishes to the needy. We will add prayers to the world to heal its sickness and hope they too can be thankful for something. They need our prayers and if you just think about them, you have given a silent hope for them. We are all children of the world. That takes care of Thanksgiving. Now comes the real expensive one, Christmas. I only say that because it is. What I do enjoy is going to the mall and watching all the shoppers rushing around to find that one special gift. Off course, this only works if I have completed my own shopping. I love all the decorations and music and cheer that is around us. When I was a boy, yeah I know a long time ago, I remember going to my aunts and uncles houses for Christmas celebrations. We always got dressed up in our Sunday best, polished shoes, dress shirt and tie, dress coat and pants. I m sure most of you did the same thing. For me, it always made me feel special, I walked with my head held high and strutted my stuff around, at least until we started playing with my cousins, then I was back to normal. You would think that Thanksgiving would be the day to bring back memories, but for me, it s Christmas. I remember going to midnight mass all dressed up and excited about getting home to open one gift. I couldn t think about what was going on at mass because of all the presents under the tree. It wasn t until I got a little older that I realized what Christmas was about. The birth of our savior. That will always be my believe and to this day, I think of that time when I realized the true meaning of the holiday. Page 2

With that being said, off I go to spend all the money I don t have to buy those gifts before everybody else gets them. Then I can go and watch the crazies running around shopping looking at all the decorations and listening to the music. What a great feeling to be free. 4 A Message from the Assistant Chapter Directors On October 1, several of our members assisted Ken and Gail Crow with the move to their new residence. It's always good when we can see our members pitching in to assist other Sierra Eagle family members. The move went great because of everyone's assistance. The whole move from start to finish was accomplished in under 3 1/2 hours. I would personally like to thank the following members who gave of their time to assist Ken and Gail: Marge and John Higley Dwight Rodgers Glen Lipska Jim Hudson Brick Reagle Ken Pouliot Now on to news from the Sierra Eagles RV; SIG: On October 5th-9th, Twenty members of the RV SIG converged upon Winchester Bay RV Resort in Winchester Bay, Oregon. Most members decided to take an extra day or two at various locations prior to arriving at our destination. The weather was absolutely beautiful for the whole trip. We were really glad to see that Lynn and Liz Jenkins were able to make the trip as Lynn was having some medical issues prior to trip. The first night, Thursday, everyone did their own thing for dinner and socialized afterward starting with a short meeting in the club house with pie and coffee to celebrate Jim Hudson's birthday. On Friday morning, as many of you already know, I received a phone call from Kay Dyer. She was coming down the inside stairs of her 5th wheel and somehow turned wrong and hurt her knee. As I left my 5th wheel, I saw Chris Ward, and we both went to check on Kay. Sue and I subsequently took Kay to the emergency room in Reedsport where it was determined that she had possibly torn a tendon in her knee. Kay was put into a brace, told not to drive, and to contact an orthopedic surgeon upon her return home. Fortunately, we were able to get Kay home safely. She is currently under doctor s care and we hope that everything heals properly and she won't have to end up having surgery. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Kay. Many members were able to go tour the Umpqua River Lighthouse and surrounding area. There was also a mile walk around Lake Marie, which was by the Lighthouse for everyone to enjoy. Friday was an open day for everyone to enjoy whatever they wanted to do; tour the area, enjoy a game of golf, or just take it easy and enjoy the day. I had planned for a BBQ on Friday night on the back side of the clubhouse. I would like to thank George Woodside and Chris Ward for taking over the BBQ in my absence. I am told that everyone had a great time. I would also like to acknowledge Carol Hannigan, Sandy Ward, and Liz Jenkins who provided a variety of deserts and salads. Due to the lack of restaurants in the area that were able to host a dinner for a group of 20, I chose to have the dinner at the local golf course on Saturday night. Page 4

We had previously had a great dinner at the golf course in Fort Bragg, California so I thought it was a safe choice. I would like to apologize to everyone for the awful dinner and service we encountered. I believe that there was only one dinner served that was good for the person who ordered it. Prior to leaving I lodged a complaint with the owners. I offer my sincere apologies to everyone. Sunday was another open day, although several of us had to leave due to prior appointments. The remainder of the group left on Monday. From the feedback I received, everyone loved the resort and the surrounding area. This may be some place we will look at returning to in the future. I would like to thank Roger and Alesia Shores for recommending Winchester Bay Resort during our previous planning meeting. I am sorry that we were not able to coordinate our trip with theirs. Roger and Alesia usually go to Winchester Bay at the end of October. The following members were in attendance: Steve Rubenstein and Charla Brand, Bob and Sandi Mims, Jim and Kathy Hudson, Kay Dyer, Chris and Sandy Ward, Lynn and Liz Jenkins, Jim and Kathy Caple, Jim and Darley Jeppson, Carol Hannigan and George Woodside, Jeannie Michelson (Aunt of Bob and Sandi Mims), Ken and Sue Pouliot (Wagon Masters for this trip) On October 22, Sue and I received a phone call from Marge Higley. Due to complications from his prior surgery, John ended up back in the hospital on October 21. It is anticipated that he will have to spend the next few days in the hospital. Our thoughts and prayers go out to both of you. As Sue and I am aware, there are many Veterans among our Sierra Eagle's family. We would like to thank each and every one of you for your service as Veteran's Day is November 11th. We would not enjoy the freedoms that we have had if it wasn t for all of our Veterans. We thank each and everyone one of you. Sue and I also wish each and every one of you a Happy Thanksgiving. We hope that you are able to enjoy the day with family and friends. Until next month Ken and Sue Pouliot Assistant Directors Page 5

To have a safe ride and trouble free trip, a good T-CLOCS inspection is required to make sure your motorcycle is in top condition. As you already know, T-CLOCS is a simple acronym used to remember motorcycle components that should be examined during a pre-ride inspection. The components are Tires and wheels; Controls, such as levers, throttle and switches; Lights and other electrics; Oils and other fluids; Chassis, Suspension and other drive-line components and finally, Stands. Since we have a T-CLOCS for our motorcycles, let s have a checkoff for the rider too and we can call it; T-CARE. T Training. Develop the knowledge and skills to ride safely and handle unexpected situations through class room training and supervised practice sessions. Fortunately, we have many experienced and trained riders in GWRRA to help us develop safe riding skills. The GWRRA Levels program is a good way to be recognized and be acknowledged for being a trained, safe rider. C Conditioning. Fatigue is a major factor for your safety during a ride. It's hard to stay alert and focused to what's going on around you to make quick and correct decisions when fatigue sets in. It's easy to say get some exercise and lose that weight, but reality usually dictates otherwise. We all know our limits so take a break if you find yourself getting fatigued. When riding in a group, if you re tired, call for a break. I guarantee that someone else in the group is tired also and will be grateful for a rest stop. As we grow older, we may find that we are no longer bullet proof and may require medications to stay in a healthy condition. If you find yourself losing focus and becoming fatigued due to a medical condition, take a break or call for a break to medicate and recover. A Attitude. The gray matter between your ears is another major factor for safe riding. Don't ride when you find yourself distracted from the job at hand. If your angry or otherwise distracted, stop, collect your thoughts and get in a good place mentally. Stay focused and use the SEE (Search, Evaluate, Execute) method to stay aware of any situations around you so you can react quickly and safely. If you have a co-rider or are in a group, think of the others around you to keep them safe also. R Riding Risks. There are many factors that add to the risks of riding a motorcycle. Traffic, weather, road conditions, directionally challenged (lost), fatigue, experience, skill, attitude, etc. are all part of conditions that can affect safe riding conditions. When planning a trip, keep in mind a plan to reduce risks as much as possible. Even when just riding to the store, wear a helmet, boots, gloves, layered riding clothing, gloves and a carry a first aid kit, tools and a cell phone. E- Expectations. The GWRRA motto is Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. We have a lot of fun riding with our friends and welcome all who want to ride with us. We want everyone to enjoy handle bar therapy with us and to arrive safely to the end of the ride. This just doesn't happen; it takes a lot of hard work by a lot of volunteers in GWRRA to live up to this motto. So, commit to riding safe, keep enhancing your skills and knowledge and someday, you too can be a volunteer to help others to have safe riding fun with us. KAY DYER Chapter Educator Pag e6

Thanksgiving will be here in a few weeks and than Christmas will be here before we know it. I really see the holidays coming with working in retail. We already have our Christmas decorations up and they are already playing Christmas music at JC Pennys. By the time I get off work I have all the Christmas songs going through my head. Talking about Christmas, our Christmas party at Tamarack Junction will be here soon. We will need a head count by December 1st on who is attending the Christmas party. The cost is $20.00 per person. You can sign up with Ken Crow by or by phone. Our annual Christmas raffle tickets are now on sale for $5.00 each or $20.00 for a book of five. This is our fund raiser for the year so please help support Sierra Eagles by buying raffle tickets. We have eight great raffle gifts. George Woodside will be putting all our pictures for 2017 on a DVD. Please send me all your pictures so I can get them to George. We need the pictures by November 30th. It would be helpful if you can label pictures by event. As many of you know Kay Dyer hurt her knee while she was in Winchester Bay, Oregon. Kay wanted everyone to know that her knee is healing and she won t need surgery. A big thank you to Ken Pouliot for going above and beyond. Ken drove Kay and her RV home and than drove back to Oregon to continue as the Wagon Master. Gail Crow Membership Enhancement Coordinator Newsletter Editor gail89406@yahoo.com Pag e 8

Words from Our Nevada District Director Micky & Marianne Farrington Hello Nevada District, Greetings from Germany. Marianne and I are currently on vacation in Germany. We are having a wonderful time and are taking in the sights and sounds of our environment. This is the one place where I get to let my lead foot fall to the floor and go fast. I ve made some record attempts on each trip I ve made over the last 10 years or so. I ve noticed that I m less and less likely to meet the speed I set starting on my spring trip in I set a land speed record of 234 kph or about 146 mph. Then in 2009 I managed a mere 194 kph or 121 mph. Now in 2017 I ve only been able to manage a land speed record of 184 kph or 115 mph. That just goes to show you that either I m slowing down in my old age or the roads are getting more congested and the speed has been reduced on a greater number of roadways. Actually it s probably a little bit of both. I m riding around on Z rated tires burning Diesel in a 1.8-liter automobile with 5 people. It s still a lot of Fun to stay up with the big boys and their toys. On this trip I haven t noticed as many motorcycles on the roadways as in previous trips. I ve been informed by my family members here in Germany that a great number of laws have been changed that is making it more difficult to own and operate a motor vehicle of any type. Even the beloved diesel has fallen out of favor. Now just about every vehicle is taxed based on a number of factors, of which the type of fuel used being one of them. This has raised the cost to the point when a larger number of world be drivers are not able to purchase a mode of transportation. So, in essence, they are being taxed out from use. I guess we should consider ourselves the lucky ones until the government takes a similar stand and reduces the number of vehicles on the road though further taxation. Unit next month, ride safe and have a great day. Marianne & Micky Farrington Nevada District Director s gwrranv@nvbell.net Page 10

Easier Route Planning for Your GPS By George Woodside In an earlier article, we described planning a route on the Honda Trip Planner website. While it will get the job done, it isn t the most user-friendly routing program available. In this article, we ll discuss some other alternatives. Once again, the specific details here are for a 2012 GL1800, but the steps are similar for all systems to the best of my knowledge. Before we get to planning, we ll go over getting your GPS up to date. As mentioned in the previous article, the current map set is If you re up to date, all is well. If you need to update, order your new map set from Garmin at goldwing.garmin.com/ goldwing/site. For older GPS systems, you will receive a new Compact Flash card. For newer systems, you will receive an SD card. Open the trunk, then open the door on the left side of your GPS. For Compact Flash cards, simply pull the existing card out to the left, noting that the label is facing you. Insert the new card the same way. For SD card systems, the card you can see in the GPS is NOT the map set; it s the route card. The map set card is below the one you see, behind a small rubber cover. Pull the top of the rubber cover down, but be careful to avoid pulling it off. Press the SD card in, and it will pop back out a little, allowing you to remove it. Note that the label faces you. Insert the new card the same way, pressing it in with a fingernail past the slot surface. When the card is properly inserted, the end of the card will be flush with the edge of the GPS. Replace the rubber cover. Now, let s plan a route. Since most everyone is familiar with Google Maps, we will use it first. Open Google Maps, and move the map to your starting point. You should zoom in enough to see the location accurately. Right click on the starting point. A pop up will appear, offering several selections. Click on Directions from here, and it will be inserted in the address list on the left of the screen. Now zoom out, scroll the map to your first stop, zoom in for an accurate location, and right click on the stop. In the pop up, click on Directions to here. It will be inserted as the destination. Repeat the zoom out, scroll, zoom in, and right click on the next stop, this time selecting Add a destination. Repeat this zoom out, scroll, zoom in, and right click procedure until you have all your stops in the list. Here is where Google maps gets both better and worse than Tip Planner. It s worse because there is no easy way I ve found to rename the stopping points in the list. It s far better, though, when it comes to changing the roads in the route. If a part of the route does not follow the roads you want, simply put your mouse over the current Page 11

route, hold down the left button and drag the route line to the road you want it to take. Google maps will adjust the route as you request. If it moves to the point you select, but part of the route is still not what you want, drag the incorrect part to the road you want. With a little experimenting, you ll soon be able to plot precisely the route you want to ride. Once you have the route the way you want it, click on the three bars at the upper left, and a menu will drop down. Select Share or Embed Map, and a small window will appear with a link to the map you have created. Click on Short URL to make the link a bit more manageable, then right click on the link and select copy. Here is where life gets a bit more complex. Google Maps stores route data in KML file format, and it has no easy way to export a map to a GPX file that your GPS can use. However, there are many utilities on the web that will do the job for you. Simply do a Google search for Google Maps to GPX and you ll find a variety of hits. For this example, we ll choose the logically named mapstogpx.com, because it allows us to paste in the link, instead of insisting that we have the KML file downloaded. Select the options Route Points and Route Name. Type a name for your route in the box, and click on Let s Go. The route will be downloaded to your computer in GPX format. Perform the transfer and import functions as described in my earlier article [EDITOR: Insert previous issue reference here]. Another choice for route planning, and my personal favorite, is a program from the Netherlands named Tyre. A free version works just fine, although it does reserve a portion of the screen for advertisements. For a fee, you can eliminate the advertisements and have a full screen mode. Tyre is an overlay for Google Maps. It allows you to use the same ease of setting your route as Google Maps, but also allows renaming the stops, and will generate a GPX file directly. You can download a copy of Tyre from the site Tyre does start up a bit slowly, so be patient. It must load itself, configure itself, and then load Google Maps before it is ready to use. To design a route in Tyre, load the program and zoom the map in to your starting point. Zoom way in, because Tyre places waypoints so accurately that if you have marked the wrong side of the road, it will add U-turns to your route to put you on the side of the road you have marked. Then, right click on the stop, and select New Waypoint (immediately). A marker will appear on the map, and the address will appear in the waypoint list on the left. Now left click on the waypoint marker, and select Rename. Pag e 12

Assign a meaningful name to your starting point, then close the window over the map. Now proceed in the same manner as if you were using Google Maps to add all your waypoints, and dragging the route map around to insure it chooses the roads you want. It s a good idea to zoom way in and review each waypoint before you save the route, just to make certain that they are all exact. Once your route is correct, save the file by using the normal file save features of your operating system. Now, remove the memory card from your GPS, as explained above, and connect it to your computer. From Tyre s Garmin menu, select Copy to Garmin, and then select your memory card in the file dialog. Remember that the route file must be in a folder named GPX, which must be inside a folder named Garmin, and the Garmin folder must be at the root level on the memory card. Tyre will write the GPX file directly to your memory card. Now follow the same steps for loading the route into your bike s GPS system, and enjoy the ride! Tyre has many more features than the ones I ve mentioned here. One great feature for planning multi-day rides is the ability to measure time and distance between any two waypoints in your route. Select the first waypoint of the day s ride in the list on the left. Then shift-click on the end point for that day, and then click the red calculator in the toolbar. The day s route will be highlighted, and the time and mileage will be shown above the waypoint list. If you try Tyre, and experiment with its many features, you may find yourself using it regularly. It s an easy-to-use and free way to plan trips and move them easily into your GPS. Page 13
