2 As the Crow Flies I said that when I became the Chapter Director, I planned to make a few changes on how we do things. This year I am planning to have our Christmas Party at a Banquet Room in a local casino, which changes how we ve done this in the past. We won t need people making their favorite dishes and buying the extra food needed for the oversized dishes. We won t need so many people helping to set up, clean up, decorate and all the other things we ve done in the past. We won t need a member to open their home to such a wild crowd. Ha-Ha! I ve been told that the Sierra Eagles have done this in the past and that while it was enjoyable, the Chapter lost money due to lack of fulfillment of others commitment to attend. This is usual for such a large crowd, but if we plan it right, it should work out great. I ll be looking for a Committee Chairman to head up a committee to address some issues that come to mind. Take this time to think of what you would like to eat, drink, and be merry, so the committee can make things happen for us. I m looking at a business dress affair. We are a motorcycle group, but we are also dignified, being senior in age. To me, it should be nicely dressed, all the decorations, and Christmas music in the background. Having a Christmas party at a banquet room gives us the opportunity to have it the way we want. I ve done a rough estimate of the cost with Tamarack Junction and it s very affordable. I have had several Christmas parties there in the past and they have worked out very well. I figure the Chapter can pay for half the cost of the ticket and the member can pay the other half. Right now that would be roughly $12 to $15 a person. I don t know about anybody else, but Gail and I spent almost that much in providing our potluck to the last Christmas party, and like many other members worked hard to set everything up. Be on the lookout to get tagged for the committee. It shouldn t be too bad since most of the planning has been done. Just need to add the finishing touches. We will also be talking about this year s Raffle and what and how we re going to do that. We re a little behind the ball on this one, so bring your ideas in and be ready to work. Remember to think of things Las Vegas wants since they won most of the prizes last year. In case you haven t heard, Reno Rendezvous has been cancelled do the very high interest in Wing Ding. Go figure, they bring Wing Ding across the Mississippi and it s big in a hurry. We been telling them to do that and they listened. Yay! Ken & Gail Crow Chapter Directors nvecd@yahoo.com Page 2

3 A Message from the Assistant Chapter Directors Sue and I hope that everyone had a happy Easter and were able to spend it with family and friends. This past month was an eventful one. We had a good turnout at the regular monthly meeting. Our Chapter Director, Ken Crow, set up a couple of good rides for us. Although I was unable to make the first Saturday group ride, I did manage to do the pre-ride up to Bridgeport. What a great ride and the weather was perfect. I understand that the weather stayed great for the group that rode to Bridgeport the following Saturday. Next up, it was our Rider Educator, Kay Dyer s turn for the Safety Social. Kay had two movies, one on group riding and the other on trailering. I had not seen the trailering one previously and left there with additional information which also included lube points which need to be checked. Then it was back to Ken Crow with another great ride. This ride was up to Volcano, California and Daffodil Hill. We had another great day for weather and the lunch stop at the Sierra House Restaurant on State Highway 88, in Pine Grove, California, was a good choice. Micky and Marianne Farrington followed in the car; as Micky's trike was still down for repairs. What the heck happened to the good weather? We woke up to 11 inches of snow up here in Spanish Springs recently. I stopped trying to figure out Mother Nature a long time ago. For Sue and I, the month of March brought us two new family members. After having lost our dog four years ago, Sue decided it was time for a new one, or should I say two. We picked up our two new miniature schnauzers from a breeder in Yuba City, California. We now have Emmy, who is a white one and Taffy who is a black one. They are now ten weeks old. They had their first play day in the snow yesterday and loved it. In fact, they've been out in the snow 3-4 more times and seem to be really intrigued with it. By now, most of you have heard that the Reno Rendezvous has been cancelled for this year. According to the home office, this was due to that high sign ups for Wing Ding. There are plans to bring Reno Rendezvous back next year but as of now, the month it will be held in has not been determined. Please be careful out there as the riding season heats up in the coming weeks. There have already been a couple of bike accidents in the Reno/Sparks areas, fortunately none involving Gold Wing riders. We are looking forward to the April activities and spending time with our Sierra Eagles family. Ken and Sue Pouliot Assistant Chapter Directors kpouliot29@yahoo.com Page 3

4 A Message from the Chapter Educator Riding with a Passenger If you are going to carry a passenger, there are a few key things to keep in mind: Equip and Adjust Your Motorcycle: A passenger seat and footrests are required by law. Adjust tire pressure and suspension settings for the additional weight. Do not exceed weight limitations specified in the owner's manual. Readjust mirrors. Passenger Preparation: Provide protective riding gear: eye protection, a DOT-approved helmet, boots, gloves, long riding pants and a high-visibility motorcycle jacket. Passengers under age 18 are required by law to wear a DOT-approved helmet. Small children are required by law to be able to reach both footrests with their feet while sitting on the passenger seat. Getting On and Off the Motorcycle: Start the engine before the passenger gets on. Squeeze the front brake while the passenger gets on or off the bike. Passengers should get off the bike before the operator. Passenger Safety Tips: Hold operator's waist or hips, or motorcycle's passenger hand-holds. Keep feet on footrests at all times, including while stopped. Keep hands and feet away from hot or moving parts. When turning, look over the operator's shoulder in the direction of the turn. Avoid turning around or making sudden moves that might affect operation. If crossing an obstacle, rise off the seat keeping your feet on the foot pegs with knees slightly bent and allow legs to absorb the shock upon impact. Operator Safety Tips: A passenger will affect handling due to extra weight and independent motion. Braking sooner with greater pressure may be necessary. Use extra caution in a corner. Allow more time and space for passing. Be ready to counter the effects of wind. Avoid extreme speeds and dramatic lean angles. 5 Membership Enhancement News Members of the month John & Marge Higley John was born on October 17 th in Camp Pendleton, California and Marge was born August 15 th in Los Angeles, California. They met in the Sheriff s office in Gold Beach, Oregon where they were both employed. They have two children, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. They moved to Reno in In 2005 they joined The Sierra Eagles. However John didn t go on a ride until That s when he met Dwight Rodgers, and they have been riding together ever since that first ride. John and Marge have held the office of Chapter Treasurer and Chapter Educator. Currently Marge is our Correspondence Secretary and Sunshine Coordinator. When asked what they like about Sierra Eagles, their reply was they like the companionship, friends they have made, the social activities and of course, they love the rides. They have driven their Gold Wing across country four times. Their 96 Goldwing has 100,000 miles on it and it is still running strong. They are really excited about the new RV group with Sierra Eagles. In their spare time Marge enjoys helping out her daughter Wendy, who owns and operates the Sierra Sky Lodge in Cromberg, California. She also enjoys reading and genealogy. John enjoys working on old cars and trucks. He also enjoys working on motorcycles and tinkering around in his garage. Gail Crow Membership Enhancement Coordinator Hi Everyone, News from the Charity Coordinator I just wanted to extend my personal thank you to all those who generously supported "The Crisis Pregnancy Center ", our last charity event. They were overwhelmed and thrilled with the abundance of the much needed items. Below is a copy of the thank you letter sent to Sierra Eagles on behalf of the Crisis Pregnancy Center. Dear Sierra Eagles Motorcycle Ohana ("Family" in Hawaiian) It is with deep gratitude that we, at the Crisis Pregnancy Center, thank you for your generous and most thoughtful donation. And, I am so thankful that Sandi conveying just a little of what we do at the Center. Our Center's hours may be on a needed schedule, but our doors are never closed to those who are hurting, seeking help, whether to find out if they are being faced with a life changing decision, needing parenting classes, or needing the sometimes desperate help in providing for their baby. I can sincerely attest to our hearts being led to help and be an emotional support to so many, but it is the greater hearts in the community, like all of you, that provide so much more. You not only willingly give your support to all of us and the work that we do at the Crisis Pregnancy Center, but you need to know and feel so blessed in your heart, that you have helped those who walk through our, doors feeling helpless and hopeless. The daily "Thank You" from so many, often times in tears, is something we all, you and us, can feel so special to be a part of in knowing we were there when no one else cared to. Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, Beverly Chong I'm working on our next charity event and hope to be able to provide more information at our April 9th meeting. I look forward to seeing everyone then. Sandi Mims, Charity Coordinator mims_sandi@sbcglobal.net - (775) Page 5

7 Sierra Eagles RV SIG News As Wagon Masters for the Sierra Eagles first ever RV Rally, that was held at the Carson Valley Inn RV Resort, in Minden, Nevada the first weekend of March, we wish to extend our thanks to all those who took a chance on the untimely weather forecast of rain to join us. Those brave Sierra Eagles were Wagon Masters Bob & Sandi Mims, Ken & Gail Crow, Kay Dyer, John & Marge Higley, Steve Rubenstein and Charla Brand, Ken & Sue Pouliot with their guests, Carmen Meikle & Steve Rennie, which totaled seven rigs in all. We were pleased to have Micky and Marianne Farrington, who joined us by staying at the Carson Valley Inn which is adjacent to the RV Park. After arriving on Friday and getting our RV's all set up and time spent visiting it was time to head to dinner. We had dinner reservations at Francisco's Mexican Restaurant in Minden. The food was great, came out hot and the service was excellent. They did a great job accommodating us. Dwight and Sue Rodgers drove from Sparks to join us for dinner and spent time visiting with all of us. Saturday morning we got together for a group breakfast at Katy's Restaurant inside the Lodge, where they had a table set up for us. Again we had good service good and food. After breakfast on Saturday we all loaded up in the available tow vehicles and caravanned over to the Silver Strike Bowling Alley in Gardnerville, NV. A fun time was had by all those who bowled and a lot of laughter from the ones who sat it out and watched in amusement. Some of us had not bowled in years! Because of the unstable weather conditions, we did not plan any outside activities. We managed to visit outside. It was a bit chilly, but beautiful. We also had fun hopping from one RV to another to visit! While the men talked about their rigs etc. the girls managed to get in quite a few walks. Those who brought their canine companions were delighted and excited to go on those walks and meet new friends. We only had to dodge a few rain drops during the day, but Saturday night we did have a good downpour with lots of wind. We were all cozy in our RV's and safe and sound. Everyone was on their own for dinner. I think a few went to the lodge for dinner and then found their way to the casino and to the lounge where they had live music. On Sunday morning was time to unhook the rigs, saying goodbye and heading home at their leisure. Everyone was talking about the next RV outing and looking forward to getting together again soon. Again we wish to thank everyone who joined us at our first Sierra Eagles RV Rally. The camaraderie of friendship of a wonderful group of Sierra Eagles made it a success!
