A Message From The Chapter Directors First of all, I would like to thank those of you who have taken the time to contact me regarding our Assistant Directors, Jim and Kathy Hudson. I have received very positive feedback about the professional manner in which the meetings have been conducted in our absence due to graduations. We are grateful that Jim and Kathy came on board and I had no doubt that they were a good fit for this position. I know they will be great Chapter Directors in the future. Alisa Shores has taken delivery of her new ride, a Polaris Slingshot. Roger says he doesn t see her very much since she took possession. They will continue with the Sierra Eagles as Associate Members. I mentioned in my weekly that Joseph Magdaleno has joined us after moving here from Orange County. Thanks to Boyd and Gay Jeffrey, we also have another couple joining us. They are Grace and Ron Nichols who live in Reno. Apparently Ron was an instructor for NV Motorcycle endorsement. They have just returned from a 10-day trip to Colorado on their Gold Wing. We would like to welcome them to the Sierra Eagles family and look forward to seeing them at future meetings and rides. For our members who were unable to attend the last TRC course, I am working with our TRC Instructor, Micky Farrington, to put on another course, hopefully in August. We have several members whose TRC levels have either expired or is about to expire, and need this course to maintain their levels. The only other TRC course is currently scheduled in Victorville for September 15 th. This course would not only take the travel time, but also two nights at hotel rooms. We will be making every effort to have a local class if at all possible. We also have several members who need the ARC Course, and we will be working on providing this as well. For those of you who will not be attending the RV SIG trip to Sisters RV Park (July 30 August 3) another ride opportunity has presented itself. This information was forwarded to me from Marianne Farrington, who received it from Becky Carroll, Chapter Director, CA-2K out of Fairfield and John Severson, Chapter Director, CA-2R. Page 2

This Multi Chapter Ride will take place on August 3rd-5th. On Saturday, August 4th, there will be a ride from Redding up to Weaverville, CA. The ride will then continue up Hwy 3, past the Trinity Alps and up over Scott Mountain Summit. This has superb scenery with minimal traffic and is about 225 miles. This ride will start early to beat the heat. CA-2R will bring snacks. A BBQ will then follow at John Severson s home, with a pool. Their Chapter will also provide a Designated Driver if needed. On Sunday, August 5th, there will be a ride up to Mt. Lassen, with plans to have breakfast in Old Station. After going over Mt. Lassen, the ride will continue to Red Bluff where members who live in the Sac/Bay area can hit the freeway to head home. Any of the Sierra Eagles would probably peel off after coming over Mt. Lassen to return home. They figure the mileage is 121 miles for this ride. As far as accommodations, the Quality Inn Motel on Hilltop Drive is walking distance to a quite a few good restaurants for Friday Dinner. The Holiday Inn is a block away and has a very nice lounge. John has also advised that they have some accommodations available with members offering rooms. John has two spare bedrooms with king beds and each have a private bath. There are apparently several RV s that could be used at the Elks Lodge. Remember to bring your National Parks Senior Pass. John would like a head count as early as possible, especially for accommodations other than the motels. Contact John Severson at If you are attending this would you please also let me know. Taking a look at our July calendar, our next meeting will be on Saturday, July 14th at Denny s. For our new members, this is located on Nugget Avenue at McCarren Blvd. 7am for Breakfast and social time with the meeting starting at 8am. There will be a ride to Antelope Lake directly following the meeting. Please have your tanks full and ready to ride. On July 26 th we will have our Safety Social at 6pm at Summit Racing. We will also have our own ride to Mt. Lassen on Saturday, July 28 th. More information on this will be provided in a weekly prior to the trip. The RV SIG will have their camping trip to Sisters RV Park near Bend, Oregon July 30 Aug. 3. This trip will be hosted by Jim and Kathy Hudson. For those of you who do not have RV s but would like to attend, there are several good hotels in the Bend, Oregon area. Ken and Sue Pouliot Chapter Directors cd@gwrranv.org Home Cell Page 3

Are you following the best practices for keeping your eyes safe? By Clyde Herring/Chapter Medic According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH. Each day about 2000 U.S. workers sustain a job-related eye injury that requires medical treatment. About one third of the injuries are treated in hospital emergency departments, and more than 100 of these injuries result in one or more days away from work. Primary causes of on-the-job eye injuries include: Striking or scraping: Small particles or objects striking or scraping the eye, such as: dust, cement chips, metal slivers, and wood chips. Large objects may also strike the eye or face, or a worker may run into an object causing blunt-force trauma to the eyeball or eye socket. Penetration: Objects like nails, staples, or slivers of wood or metal can go through the eyeball and result in a permanent loss of vision. Chemical and thermal burns: Industrial chemicals or cleaning products are common causes of chemical burns to one or both eyes. Thermal burns to the eye also occur, often among welders. Be aware of your surroundings while working with drills, scrapers, and liquids that could end up in your eye. Always wear the proper protective equipment. Clyde Herring Chapter Medic Page 5

June Chapter Gathering Notes Our gathering started with Assistant Chapter Director Jim Hudson leading the Pledge of Allegiance. We had twenty-nine GWRRA members and five guests. Chris and Sandy Ward had their two grandchildren; Micky and Marianne Farrington had their son and his fiancée; Eddie Lewis had a friend; Hilton Thomas. Charity for the month of June is the Humane Society. Dusty and Joan Rhodes will be delivering our donations to the Humane Society. Joan thanked everyone who brought something and also stated you could also give cash donations. The Activity Binder is up front and has been updated. So far no one has looked at the book. If there is no interest, the book will be stopped and everything will be accessible on the website calendar. Congratulations to George Woodside for being selected as one of the three co-writers for the Workbench articles in the Wing World. George also talked about getting your bike on the center stand. He designed a piece to help and explained how to use it. He also generously gave away approximately ten of them. Clyde Herring gave a talk about Hoot in the Ute. Clyde and Jim Hudson are now certified to teach most GWRRA courses. Congratulations to Micky and Marianne Farrington for taking first place in the Scavenger Hunt at Hoot in the Ute. Our garage sale was successful and we made $ for the chapter. Thanks to everyone that helped out. Motorist Awareness was also promoted at the garage sale. Congratulations to Boyd and Gay Jeffery on their 50 th Wedding Anniversary. Thank you for inviting the Sierra Eagles to the celebration. Congratulations to Brick Reagle for achieving Masters Level 4. Brick was presented with a patch and letter from Jim Hudson. We need a new publisher for the newsletter as Gail Crow will be stepping down from publishing the newsletter in August. Ken and Gail will be full time RVing. No new Wing Nut nominations. Dwight keeps it and wears it with pride. Jim opened the bidding for the prize give a-ways. We made $45.00 for the chapter. Page 6

RV Ancient Redwoods Run By Chris and Sandy Ward Hello to all fellow Sierra Eagles, Our second RV trip of the year was held June 11th-15 th, This event was called Ancient Redwoods RV Run, the list of attendees this year included Chris and Sandy Ward (Grandkids: Alexi and Mannie); Jim and Kathy Hudson; Jim and Kathy Caple (Grandkid: Elden); Dusty and Joan Rhoades; Steve Rubenstein and Charla Brand; George and Carol Woodside; Dave and Judy Michael; Boyd and Gay Jeffery (Grandkids: Sarah and Rebecca). This was initially Kay Dyers RV excursion; however, due to medical reasons she asked us to wagon master this event. We arrived a day early, and the drive over took a total of eleven hours and we arrived around 4 p.m. to a quick and easy setup. Monday was spent around the RV campsite awaiting the arrival of the group an information table was setup for independent rides and destinations for all. That evening a campfire was held at our campsite to go over the weeks activities and a request was made for each group to provide a synopsis of their impressions of the week s events. The new Sierra Eagles RV SIG Bubblehead award was awarded on Monday when I witnessed Dusty Rhoades arriving at the park with one of his slide out covers flapping in the breeze. This provided us the opportunity to pass along the bubble head to Dusty at the first campfire. I did note, that this award could be passed along to any RV member while at a RV function. On the last nights campfire it was brought to our attention by Jim Caple that Steve Rubenstein had routed his sewer line uphill from the RV to the sewer port. Jim Caple nominated Steve, it was seconded and carried by most, and Steve is now the honorary bubblehead recipient. Provided Synopsis I have been through the area of the Avenue of the Giants twice. Both times with my husband going north on 101, we always stopped for a bit, but I have never had a chance to really explore the giant trees. When I first thought of this RV trip, I was still wearing a brace on my knee and was getting around ok, but the Doc decided after looking at the MRI, that I needed a knee replacement. The replacement was done on April 23rd, it has been seven weeks and is doing well. However driving 800 miles round trip and pulling the 5th wheel in my old one ton, plus having the dogs along, was not the best of ideas. So I had to cancel. Chris and Sandy Ward stepped up and took over the RV trip, I'm really grateful that they did. Page 8

I am totally bummed that I was not able to go, but better safe than sorry. Thank you Chris & Sandy Ward Maybe next year?? Kay Dyer Redwoods RV Trip, Grand kids We took so long to get to the campsite, but it was worth it when we got there. Now coming from Yuma, AZ, it was like paradise because the weather range was 60 degrees to 90 degrees. And, in Yuma, the weather is always 90 degrees and up. (They say we re 2 feet from hell) On the second day the first people to show up were Jim and Kathy Caple. They had a grandson named Elden who was 13, the same age as me. So of course I was excited because I would finally meet someone my age, in the time period we are with our grandparents. Then a couple of hours later Dusty and Joan show up. We learned about the sunshade accident and I just knew it was my duty to help my papa give him the bubblehead award. So later that night when we were all sitting around the campfire at our RV, I gave Dusty the bubblehead award which gave me so much joy that I said a good ten minute speech on how we are all family, while Mannie was enjoying a s more. Also during the day another kid my age (Rebecca) showed up with her sister (Sarah) which is different because their grandparents were a part of the association. Over the next few days we went and visited the trails and saw some really cool trees. Then on the last two days we said our goodbyes and left. This event would have been much more fun if we had more people involved. Thank you and god bless, Alexi and Mannie Page 9

Redwoods Trip The Ancient Redwoods RV Park is a very nice park, with an interesting gift shop and a very friendly staff. The RV sites are paved, level, drive-through, and with full hookups. It was a bit of a grueling drive to get there, especially towing bike trailers. We took a day ride to Shelter Cove to see the relocated and restored Mendocino Lighthouse, but the road to Shelter Cove is not one I would recommend. We rode the Avenue of the Giants, marveling at the thousand-year-old, three hundred foot tall Redwoods. We took another day ride to Eureka, saw the spectacular Carter Mansion, and on the way back stopped in Ferndale. That s a little town not to be missed. It is packed with well maintained Victorian style homes and stores. It was the highlight of our trip, and we would recommend that anyone in the area take the time to see it. George R. Woodside Page 10

Typed by Alexi So our RV trip was planned with little to no responsibilities; however this changed very quickly. At first we were just one of many to show up and have a good time and then our host Kay was unable to attend. I took over as wagon master and proceeded with Kays plans. We found out that our summer would be filled with our grandkids and to include this RV trip. We arrived a day early to set up and prepare our camp host responsibilities for the coming week. Monday was spent around the campsite and awaiting the arrival of the rest of our RV group. In the evening hours a bonfire was held at our campsite and we discussed the various attractions in the area. Tuesday we ventured on our bikes with our grandkids and met up with the Jeffery's on-route. Our small group toured many sites throughout the ancient redwoods drive. The ride through the redwoods was exquisite at the very least, we have never been on an amazing road until now. Wednesday was spent riding north through the small towns, including the Lolita Cheese Factory and this included a wonderful lunch at the Samoa Cookhouse. Thursday was spent riding to various souvenir shops, to acquire all of our souvenirs for this trip. An ending campfire and s mores event was held at our campsite to talk about the fun activities that all of us enjoyed at this chapter RV event. The weather was excellent throughout this event. Sincerely, Chris and Sandy Ward Wagon Masters, RV SIG Coordinators Page 11

Nevada District Director s Micky and Marianne Farrington Hello Nevada District membership, Well it s another month behind us and the Hoot in the Ute is over. June has proven to be another hot one, and July looks to get a little Hotter. So please stay cool in your travels during these hot several months. Travel early in the morning and hold up somewhere during the heat of the day. Then travel in the evening hours to finish your destination. As many of you know, the loss of the Region has created a vacuum in our rally s going forward. It does remove one additional rally that now doesn t need to be scheduled. However, with the reduction of our membership and the cost associated with putting on a rally for the members. It might be prudent for the different District (States) to start holding a combine rally event. We have a great organization and I think the members would welcome a change that helps keep the Fun in the rally s and allows for as much participation as possible. What would you think about a combined rally with our fellow members from California, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Idaho, Washington, New Mexico etc. These are but a few of the Western States that we could formally hold a rally with in the future. How would you feel if Nevada were to combine with another District to hold a rally? What about holding the event with several of the States District s? I would like to hear from you the members within the Nevada District. Your opinion matters and counts towards building a better organization that represents the Nevada District members. Please send your comments regarding the questions to me at gwrranv@gmail.com.. As Spock usually stated when saying farewell until the next time we meet, Live long and prosper while keeping the shiny side up. Condition: As noted, the scooter is in excellent condition with only the slightest signs of wear. It's been well cared for and is garage kept. Unlike so many motorcycles out there, the Yamaha Scooter shows absolutely no signs of abuse or crash damage. The paint is bright and shiny, as are all the chrome parts.
