A Message from The Chapter Directors First of all I would like to say THANK YOU to George Woodside. George spent several days with my new laptop getting things up and running. It seems that my new laptop was outdated before it came out of the box. I know technical things are constantly changing but that quick? George had to update everything in order to get me up and running. George even took the time to create a Windows and Outlook Bible for me to go by. I can t tell you how many times I have referred to it. Again, thank you George for all of your efforts. What a great start to this year. As previously mentioned, we had a full house at the Wigwam in Fernley for our New Years Day Breakfast. Our first official Chapter meeting of the year was on January 13 th, and we had another fantastic turnout. I think there were only a couple of empty chairs. If we keep this up, which I hope we do, we will have to find a larger meeting room. We had 21 members attend the Safety Social at Denny s Thursday night, the 25 th of January. Needless to say, the movie that was shown spurred up a good amount of conversation. Thanks to all of you who came out and took part. A special thank you to Ken Crow for putting on this training, which is an important reminder to all of us to perform our T-Clock inspections and to ride safely. Your RV SIG wagon masters have been busy setting up their trips that were approved for this year. They will be releasing additional information as it becomes available. Also, Alesia and Roger Shores have invited anyone interested to join them for their Good Sam camp-out at Rancheria RV Park in Hat Creek, CA. The only time available to book this was June 7-10, which is our regular meeting weekend. They have also booked their yearly trip to Winchester Bay, OR for Oct nd, and have invited anyone who would like to join them. In my January 23 rd , I mentioned possibilities for a group outing to the Reno Aces. I have since received several positive responses. I was also advised that the picnic area is off the 3 rd base line and viewing the game is not very good from this location. Anyway, we will discuss this more at the February meeting to see how much interest there is. Although we do not currently have a Charity Coordinator, Sue and l feel that we need to keep this going in our Chapter. Therefore, Sue and I will coordinate our first charity for this year. This will be the Veterans Guest House and it will be our March Charity. I will have handouts at our next meeting as to what their current needs are. This will also allow us time to research two other charities for this year, so bring your thoughts to the meeting. Page 2
As I look at our February calendar, we have several things going on. First, our regular meeting is February 10 th at 8am at Denny s. Then on Tuesday, February 15 th we will be having our ride planning meeting with our Ride Coordinator, Ken Crow. This will take place at the Round Table Pizza on N. Hills Drive in Reno at 6pm. Think about which rides you would like to do this year. We will have our 2 nd safety social on February 22 nd at 6pm at Denny s. For those of you who are signed up, we will be having our First Aid/ CPR class on February 24 th at 9am. This will be held at REMSA, located at 400 Edison Way in Reno. Sue and I would like to wish everyone a Happy Valentines Day on February 14 th. Until next month, Ken and Sue Pouliot Chapter Directors cd@gwrranv.org Home Cell Page 3
A Message From The Assistant Chapter Directors As I write this, it s late January. The Christmas decorations have been put away, and the Valentine s Day merchandise has been out at the retail establishments for three weeks. Ugh. The weather has been unseasonably warm for January perfect to get that winter ride in. Our bikes tend to sit a bit longer in the winter between rides, so it s even more important to remember to do our T-CLOCS checks before we ride. Tire pressure can dramatically drop from sitting in your garage. The consequences of riding on an under inflated tire can be disastrous. I have attached a T-CLOCS checklist at the end of this article for your perusal. For those of you who are RV SIG folks, I will be the wagon master for the trip we will be taking to Bend/Sisters, Oregon. The dates will be July 30 - August 3, The website for the park is I will be working on activities we can do while we re there. Please let me know if you have any requests or ideas for group activities. As the District Motorist Awareness Program coordinator, one of my duties is to make sure our chapter members are informed and given information to promote motorist awareness in our community. To this end, I will have fliers available after the February meeting. I would ask that you please take a couple of these and distribute them to your friends, work colleagues, family, and the general public when you can. Motorist awareness is everyone s responsibility. Ride Safe! Jim and Kathy Hudson Assistant Chapter Directors Page 4

Winter Safety By Clyde Herring / Medic First Aid Instructor In our area, the snow season has begun. Before your family heads out for a day of playing in the fresh powder, make snow sports safety a priority and be ready to respond to a cold weather emergency. Tips for sledders: Choose a good sledding hill, one that has a clear path without obstacles in the way. Make sure that the hill does not end on a street, road, parking lot or any bodies of water such as a pond or river. Never sled downhill headfirst. Sit up facing forward to steer. Risks of head and back injuries are greater by lying down on the sled. For skiers and snowboarders, safety becomes an even greater concern. The most important piece of gear you can take to the mountain is the appropriate helmet for your sport. According to a recent study: Skateboarding, snowboarding, skiing and motocross had the highest number of head and neck injuries. Snowboarding had the most concussions. In fact, about 30% of concussions in extreme sports occurred in snowboarding. Snow skiing was associated with about 25% of concussions. Always wear your helmet and always ski or board within your ability level. Be sure you are adequately dressed for winter weather. As the recent frigid conditions across the country have shown, cold temperatures can be deadly. Hypothermia and Emergency Care Cold, wet temperatures can result in a lowering of the internal body temperature. Hypothermia, a generalized cooling of the body, occurs when the internal core body temperature has decreased to 95 F or less. It is a life-threatening condition. To help recognize hypothermia, look for pale, cold skin, uncontrollable shivering, loss of coordination, difficulty speaking and an altered mental status. Severe hypothermia can result in the loss of shivering and a slowing of the breathing and heart rate. To care for the person, carefully and gently move them to a warmer place. Remove wet clothing and cover the person with something dry and warm. Cover their head and neck to retain body heat. Page 7
If available, activate EMS and get an AED. As the body temperature gets lower, body processes become impaired and eventually fail. Cardiac arrest may occur. If you are far from professional medical care, begin actively re-warming the person. Place him near a heat source. Put containers of warm, but not hot, water in contact with the person s skin. Clyde Herring GWRRA/HSI Medic First Aid Instructor Chapter Treasurers Chapter Treasurers Clyde and Lucy Herring would like to remind you about the Door Prize incentive. They are asking everyone to check boxes in the garage and other storage places to see if there is anything that could be donated as a door prize. They can use anything you think someone else could use or would like. As a reward you receive double 50/50 raffle tickets! A very special THANK YOU to everyone who donates items to the Chapter for our monthly Door Prize Pool and those who continue to buy the 50/25/25 tickets.
