As the Crow Flies By now, you should have completed your T-Clocks, changed all the fluids and most importantly, cleaned and waxed your beauty and should be ready to ride. Why haven t you? Oh, you say you have been riding. Great, where have you been? So far, since January, I ve been to Pyramid Lake, Smith Valley, Virginia City, Genoa, Lake Topaz and various other places around town. Yea, I know, big deal. Some of you have been to several other places and a lot further than the ones I ve mentioned. The point is, that some of us have already had the chance to get out and see our little world. There is one big thing I would like to impress upon you. There are holes in the road that will swallow you whole. I know you have heard this before, but I m not kidding. If you ve been out there, then you know what I m talking about. Tell your Sierra Eagle family what you have seen, hit, or just missed seeing your life blaze by. If you are the unlucky ones and haven t ridden yet then be prepared. You and I know they won t have those canyons (holes) filled in before your out on the road. We have been stressing team riding and SAFE riding for the past couple of months. If you have not had a chance to hear about team riding then you are in luck. This month, I ll be doing a course for Road Captains. This course is designed to help prospected Road Captains to gain the information and skills required to become a R/C. After the course information is presented, the candidates will be required to demonstrate their abilities to perform the R/C duties. There is no renewal required for the Road Captains, but a refresher course is nice. Just like renewing your ARC/TRC because un-used skills go away. So does un-used R/C skills. If you are saying you don t wish to become a R/C, then that s alright too. You re not required to be a R/C to move up the Levels program. Sit back and enjoy the ride you always have had, after all, that s why you joined GWRRA in the first place. However, if you were looking for something just little more exciting, then become a R/C. It increases your endorphins and we all know what that does. That extra responsibility that you had several years ago, (no age impounded) will give you a good feeling. With all that being said, If you don t want to be a R/C as I said earlier, that s fine, but it will be beneficial for you and it covers all the team riding information you missed. If nothing else, if you haven t been to a Rider Ed training yet, come and see what it s all about. You can at least come out for pizza and salad. 3 A Message from the Assistant Chapter Directors As some of you may have realized, I have been trying to acknowledge one of our members each month, who have dedicated themselves to making the Sierra Eagles a great chapter. By no means, am I trying to take away from any past member who has served in a volunteer position. Although we were not Assistant Chapter Directors during your tenure, THANKS A MILLION, to each and every one of you who previously served and have worked to guide the Sierra Eagles Chapter to where we are today. Each and every one of you should be proud of what you have done; some of you having served multiple times. That being said, for this month I actually have two individuals I would like to acknowledge. First of all, Marge Higley. Thank you for all that you do as our Chapter Correspondence Secretary, taking such great notes and keeping everyone informed through the newsletter. Also, thanks for the many rides and hotels that you have set up for our chapter members, such as the upcoming and previous Oregon rides and our trip to Billings Montana last year. Let's not forget that Marge is also our current Sunshine Report Coordinator, sending out all of the Birthday, Anniversary and Get Well Cards to everyone. Marge, you are a blessing to our Sierra Eagles Family. Next, a big "Thank You", to John Higley. Not because of all of his past work with trailering and mechanical assistance he has given to so many of us over the years, but because of his compassion and caring. As many of you know, Mark Hagen was recently involved in an accident while riding his Goldwing. Mark has Kaiser Insurance and John has been there to take Mark to multiple appointments in California. John, all I can say to you is "Thank You" for being there for one of our Sierra Eagle's family members. It is truly an honor to be associated with someone so caring. And Mark, please know that every one of our Sierra Eagle's family are wishing you a quick and complete recovery. Please don't hesitate to let any of us know if we can be of assistance to you or Linda. In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to wish my wife, Sue, a very "Happy Birthday" on April 20th. Until next month, Ken and Sue Pouliot Assistant Chapter Directors kpouliot29@yahoo.com Page 3

A Message from the Chapter Educator Motorcycle Helmet Function Accident damaged helmet shows how the chin bar and face shield protected the user. The conventional motorcycle helmet has two principal protective components: a thin, hard, outer shell typically made from polycarbonate plastic, fiberglass, or Kevlar and a soft, thick, inner liner usually made of expanded polystyrene or polypropylene "EPS" foam. The purpose of the hard-outer shell is: To prevent penetration of the helmet by a pointed object that might otherwise puncture the skull, and to provide structure to the inner liner so it does not disintegrate upon abrasive contact with pavement. This is important because the foams used have very little resistance to penetration and abrasion. The purpose of the foam liner is to crush during an impact, thereby increasing the distance and period of time over which the head stops and reducing its deceleration. To understand the action of a helmet, it is first necessary to understand the mechanism of head injury. The common perception that a helmet's purpose is to save the rider's head from splitting open is misleading. Skull fractures are usually not life threatening unless the fracture is depressed and impinges on the brain beneath and bone fractures usually heal over a relatively short period. Brain injuries are much more serious. They frequently result in death, permanent disability or personality change and, unlike bone, neurological tissue has very limited ability to recover after an injury. Therefore, the primary purpose of a helmet is to prevent traumatic brain injury while skull and face injuries are a significant secondary concern. The most common type of head injury in motorcycle accidents is closed head injury, meaning, injury in which the skull is not broken as distinct from an open head injury like a bullet wound. Page 4

Closed head injury results from violent acceleration of the head, which causes the brain to move around inside the skull. During an impact to the front of the head, the brain lurches forwards inside the skull, squeezing the tissue near the impact site and stretching the tissue on the opposite side of the head. Then the brain rebounds in the opposite direction, stretching the tissue near the impact site and squeezing the tissue on the other side of the head. Blood vessels linking the brain to the inside of the skull may also break during this process, causing dangerous bleeding. A helmet that has been involved in an accident Another hazard, susceptibility of the brain to shearing forces, plays a role primarily in injuries that involve rapid and forceful movements of the head, such as in motor vehicle accidents. In these situations, rotational forces such as might occur in whiplash-type injuries are particularly important. These forces, associated with the rapid acceleration and deceleration of the head, are smallest at the point of rotation of the brain near the lower end of the brain stem and successively increase at increasing distances from this point. The resulting shearing forces cause different levels in the brain to move relative to one another. This movement produces stretching and tearing of axons (diffuse axonal injury) and the insulating myelin sheath, injuries which are the major cause of loss of consciousness in a head trauma. Small blood vessels are also damaged causing bleeding (petechial hemorrhages) deep within the brain. It is important that the liner in a motorcycle helmet is soft and thick so the head decelerates at a gentle rate as it sinks into it. The helmet quickly becomes impractical if the liner is more than 1 2 inches ( cm) thick. This implies a limit to how soft the liner can be. If the liner is too soft, the head will crush it completely upon impact without coming to a stop. Outside the liner is a hard-plastic shell and beyond that is whatever the helmet is hitting, which is usually an unyielding surface, like concrete pavement. Consequently, the head cannot move any further, so after crushing the liner it comes suddenly to an abrupt stop, causing high accelerations that injure the brain. Therefore, an ideal helmet liner is stiff enough to decelerate the impacting head to an abrupt stop in a smooth uniform manner just before it completely crushes the liner and no stiffer. Page 5

The required stiffness depends on the impact speed of the head, which is unknown at the time of manufacture of the helmet. The result is that the manufacturer must choose a likely speed of impact and optimize the helmet for that impact speed. If the helmet is in a real impact that is slower than the one for which it was designed, it will still help but the head will be decelerated a little more violently than was actually necessary given the available space between the inside and outside of the helmet, although that deceleration will still be much less than what it would have been in the absence of the helmet. If the impact is faster than the one the helmet was designed for, the head will completely crush the liner and slow down but not stop in the process. When the crush space of the liner runs out, the head will stop suddenly which is not ideal. However, in the absence of the helmet, the head would have been brought to a sudden stop from a higher speed causing more injury. Still, a helmet with a stiffer foam that stopped the head before the liner crush space ran out would have done a better job. So, helmets help most in impacts at the speeds they were designed for, and continue to help but not as much in impacts that are at different speeds. In practice, motorcycle helmet manufacturers choose the impact speed they will design for based on the speed used in standard helmet tests. Most standard helmet tests use speeds between 4 and 7 m/s (8.9 and 15.7 mph; 14 and 25 km/ KAY DYER Chapter Educator Chapter Photographer (775) Page 6

. Membership Enhancement News Hi everyone! It s April already! Soon the rides will begin. We have a fun summer planned with some really fun rides and camping with our RV group. I just love summer, getting out and enjoying nature. This month I am not doing a member of the month. Instead I am inclosing an article from Gary Wittmuss. Please join me in offering condolences and our prayers to Gary. Gail Crow Membership Enhancement Coordinator Newsletter Editor gail89406@yahoo.com Some of the Sierra Eagles like Dwight Rodgers and George Woodside and others would remember my wife Dottie Wittmuss. We were very active with the group in the eighties and nineties and a little later. Dottie died after suffering a brain aneurysm last Thursday while returning from a ladies luncheon in Reno. After being sent to the ER at Carson Tahoe Hospital then Care Flighted to Reno Renown and after an operation, cat scans and further tests, she never recovered from her coma. They couldn't stop the bleeding, perhaps due to the fact she was on blood thinning meds. She was taken off life support Sunday and sent to the hospice ward to be comfortable on a morphine/saline drip and she passed away on Tuesday at 3:20PM. This is especially hard to bear because she was such an active person in her retirement and she had always expressed a loving attitude toward all. She was 72. 15 Region Directors Andy and Sherry Smith Zoom-Zoom - April 2017 It seems crazy that it is nearing the end of March already. We are not sure of your weather but in Colorado we are trying to figure out, is it spring or still winter. We have had days recently where we have had 70o+ weather and some awesome opportunity to get the bikes out. The Colorado weather guessers are calling for a spring snow storm (yep, happens all the time). Crazy weather! We are sure that it is rapidly changing where you hang your hat or ride. Like most 'Wingers' we are looking forward to the upcoming riding season; all those great dinner rides, darn, I got lost rides, and just ride for rides, make sure your ride is ride 'able'. Do that Pre-season check of your ride, break out your owner's manual and make sure the service is up to date and get a N.17 to make sure you don't miss anything on your T-CLOCS! Got to keep it "Shiny Side Up" When was the last time you did your on bike course (BRC2 / ARC / TRC)? Got to keep our Levels current We are also watching the days fly by (faster that we like) as we approach our Region "F"un Rally in Tucson. The Region staff is hard at work for the upcoming May 26-28, Starr Pass Resort. The Arizona team is working the final checks for the rides that are being planned, the Rider Educators and Trainers finalizing the many training workshops that will be available (there will be some great new workshops to learn from), including OCP for the newer officers on the team, everyone on the team is putting the final touches on everything that will be happening. Don't miss out! Page 15

We have some really good 'Secret' news that will be announced at opening ceremonies and we are planning for some special guests to be with us. The Region will barely get all cleaned up from our Rally, and time will fly by so fast that we will be getting ready for Wing Ding 39 and the celebration of the 40th anniversary of GWRRA. We know that the cost is more for this Wing Ding than it has been in the past, but we are only going to be 40 years old once. In last month's article, we talked about the ARL and how we can all help with member retention. Did you come up with some amazing new ideas that you would like to share with the rest of the Region "F" Family? Send it to us at and we will spread it around! Lastly, as we watch the snow start to fall here in Colorado, be safe on the roads. Till next time... Serving the Members of GWRRA! Ride Safe Have Fun! 23 The Longest Ride, by Emilio Scotto Submitted by George Woodside When he was eight years old, young Argentine Emilio Scotto s mother gave him a world atlas. He was fascinated, and spent hours studying the pages, imagining himself visiting all those strange, far off lands. After a year of his imaginary voyages, Emilio announced to his mother that he was going to travel around the world, visiting every country. Some twenty years later, Emilio was passing by the local Honda dealer. He saw the flyer for the 1980 Goldwing GL1100 Interstate. He decided on the spot that he was going to own one. He was employed by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals as a sales representative. Although he lived and worked in Argentina, he was paid in U. S. dollars. At the time, though, all transactions were done in Argentine pesos. After many negotiations with the Honda dealer, Emilio reached an agreement with him. He made a down payment of $1,000 worth of Argentine pesos, and agreed to pay off the rest in one year. All transactions were spelled out clearly, and all were to be in pesos. The exchange rate was about 170 pesos to the U. S. Dollar. Soon after the papers were signed, though, the Argentine government devalued the peso to 1,700 per U. S. Dollar. Within a week, that rate had exploded to 6,000 pesos for one dollar. Emilio had his precious Goldwing paid for with ease. On September 27, 1984, Emilio celebrated his 30 th birthday. He decided it was time to fulfill his childhood dream of travelling around the world. He had his Goldwing, his dream, and his determination. He sold everything else he owned, loaded the bike, and set out on an absolutely amazing adventure. Over the coming years, he would encounter mountains, swamps, freezing temperatures, and intensely hot deserts. He would be arrested, jailed, shot at, threatened, befriended, admired, interviewed, and celebrated. And when he made it all the way around the world, he decided to turn around and go back around the world again, in the opposite direction. In all, he travelled nearly half a million miles, over ten years. He returned to his native Argentina as a hero, and eventually wrote a book about his journey. That book, The Longest Ride, by Emilio Scotto, is ISBN-13: It is a fascinating read, full of great stories and hundreds of photos. During his first trip across the United States, he was stuck in a traffic jam in Houston, Texas. As was the custom in Argentina, and where he had recently been in California, Emilio proceeded to navigate his way through the traffic by riding between the lanes of cars. Soon, though, he was spotted by the police, who pulled him over. After he was told that lane splitting was not legal in Texas, one of the officers asked him about where he was from, and what he was doing in Texas. Emilio explained that he was a tourist on his way around the world. That officer also owned a Goldwing, befriended him, and told him about the Goldwing Road Riders Association. Page 23

He provided Emilio a place to stay, and then took him to a GWRRA event. From The Longest Ride: The Goldwing Road Riders Association organizes a meeting in Shreveport, Louisiana, and we go there: my friend Terry, the sheriff, and his son and daughter-in-law, who followed us in a van. Of the ten thousand motorcycles present, mine is the oldest, but the way people welcome me makes me feel at home. Americans are cold, someone once said to me. Well they ought to attend a meeting like this one. The only cold things are the thousands of drinks consumed. During his ten years of travels, Emilio visited 232 countries on six continents. He burned 13,000 gallons of gas and used 250 gallons of oil. He went through 86 tires, nine seats, and had the engine replaced. He went through 11 passports, each with 64 pages. He received 15 traffic tickets, and 13 of those were in California! He now holds the Guinness world record for the longest motorcycle ride. Page 24

For Sale This nice Ladies Gray & Black Tour Master Motorcycle 4 in 1 Jacket is in good used condition. Polyester Shell and Lining. Zippered Pockets Exterior. Velcro Inner Pockets. The first Jacket is the Draft Jacket. You can zip off the outer shell and have a mesh jacket for hot days. For your safety, it has armored elbows, shoulders, and back padding. It also has an inside zipper flap to attach your pants. It is machine washable with cold water, which I have done. I wore it for a season and therefore it has a little (minor) wear and some minor sun fading on the collar. It has an adjustable Velcro waist and is in great condition. The Draft Jacket measures 26" armpit to armpit (outside measurement) The center back measurement is 26" including the waist padding. It s a size XL The second Jacket/Liner is the Flex Jacket. You can insert this jacket into the Draft Jacket and be very warm and cozy during those cold rides. You wear this jacket by itself as a nice wind breaker. This jacket also has a quilted zip-out liner, as well as inside pockets. The Flex Jacket measures 24" armpit to armpit (outside measurement) It is a nice heavy duty protective jacket at a great price. Only $49.99 Contact Marianne Farrington for more info Page 27
