2 Page 2 The Hubcap PRESIDENT S CORNER By Mark Brians Do you know why the Chicken crossed the road? To get to the Chicken Place in Marlin, of course! Our Saturday, June 9, 2012 meeting is at 1 pm at the Chicken Place in Marlin right on Highway 7 on the west side town. We have a nice private meeting place and the food is very good. Spring is fast turning into summer here in Belton. Where does the time go I wonder? I actually have sold three cars this year but I also bought three. I was trying to cut back on my collection. On the positive side the three I bought are better cars than I sold. All three have air conditioning of some sort and shiny paint, unlike the ones I sold. So I guess I am improving the herd. I hope your projects are going well and you are getting ready for the International Meet in South Bend the end of July. I found out that Texas passed a new law that you have 30 days to transfer a car title even if it is an out of state title. If it is dated after 2008, they will fine you $25 for over 30 days and $25 for each month past that. If it is a before 2008, it is grandfathered and you pay the old late fine which was very little. If you have any old titles for projects that are dated, you need to check it out as it can cost you big bucks now. I got all my titles in order and will make sure I do not get into problems in the future. The new law took effect last September I am told. I am amazed at the laws that are passed that you never hear of until you get hit by it. Well, I hope to see you in Marlin in that shiny Studebaker. 3 The Hubcap Page 3 Being rather new to both Central Texas and hunting up old Studebaker parts, what is news to me may be old hat to most of our members. Still I thought that, just in case someone else might be interested, I would pass along a little info on John s Salvage Company located South of Seguin, Texas. JOHN S SALVAGE COMPANY By Nick Dynis John opened his Salvage Company in 1975 and, as he puts it, never scrapped anything I thought someone might want. There are acres of pre-1969 cars which include a few Studebakers. He even has a 64 Wagonaire parts car. It is too far gone to restore but still has a few good parts to donate to someone like me. Take a look at his website: johnssalvagecompany.com. He has done a pretty good job of showing you what he has. In addition to some Wagonaire parts I also found an overdrive transmission in one of his Studebakers. John s is located South on State Highway 123 off of I-10 in Seguin. Take SH 123 about 8 miles and then make a left onto Fox Trotter Road. In about 2 miles you will see John s on the left. He is open 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. weekdays and 9:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. Saturday. Closed on Sunday. His phone is Attention All You Studebaker Engine Gurus! I have a problem with my 64 Wagonaire that has exhausted my already very small supply of Studebaker knowledge. I cannot get the car to quit backfiring whenever I let off the accelerator. It does the POW!! POP!! POP!! BANG!! thing all the way down until I give it a little gas again. The car has a 259 with a four barrel carburetor and dual exhausts. If you have any suggestions PLEASE them to nick@dynis.info. Thanks!

4 Page 4 The Hubcap SPRING TOUR THE TEXAS HILL COUNTRY Thirty-six members and friends of the Central Texas Chapter traveled to the Hill Country for our 23rd Annual Spring Tour. We met for lunch in Johnson City at the Hill Country Cupboard Café at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 13. From there we drove 17 miles through some beautiful rolling hills for a tour of the LBJ Ranch. On the ranch we made a stop at the gift shop, of course, and viewed his airplane, some of his cars and the Texas Whitehouse. On our way from the LBJ Ranch to Fredericksburg, we stopped off at the Wildflower Seed Farm for some viewing and shopping. Our base in Fredericksburg was a 40 s motel, the Peach Tree Inn, just a couple of blocks off Main and just south of the Admiral Nimitz Museum and the Museum of the Pacific War. Suffice it to say, the entire museum complex is worth a trip to Fredericksburg, and allow two days to see it all. Friday night was dinner on your own followed by visiting and munching in the hospitality room. Our chapter cooks never let us down! See the recipe for Virginia Weaver s German Chocolate Upside Down Cake elsewhere in this Hubcap. Speaking of the hospitality room, that s a story of its own.the owners of the Peach Tree promised a large room for our hospitality, meeting and banquet needs. The remodeling of the existing room was not completed on time, so they moved out of a large room, kitchen and entry way of their private living quarters to accommodate us. They did everything they could to make our stay one of the best ever! All day Saturday was spent mainly on the Main Street of Fredericksburg at the National Museum of the Pacific War and the many shops along Main. Saturday night we had our banquet catered by David s Old Fashioned Pit BBQ in the hospitality room. Everything was great. This was a very good tour as usual! Lorraine and Mark did another great job. The following folks attended: Mark & Lorraine Brians, Belton; James & Leona Campbell, Waller; Joe & Karen Clark, Cameron; C.C. & Lorraine Corbin, Burkburnett; Don and Polly Dollar, Coleman; B.B. & Hazel Holland, College Station; Gary & Donna Lowe, Belton; Les & Linda Huff, Kerrville; Bill & Diana Osborne, College Station; Fred Radle, Paula and Tracy Lightfoot, Waco; Doyle Smith, Wiergate; Ken & Estella Smith, Hempstead; Ed & Beulah Warner, Judson; Onnie & Virginia Weaver, Jasper; Morgan and Charlotte Woolens, Jasper; Emery & Shirley Bridges, Burnet; Warren & Sharon Bridges, Chilton; Ross Ball, Lorena; and Brad Putchat, Waco. A different look What s the problem?

7 The Hubcap Page 7 An that Hazel received from Lavern Cooper: Central Texas Chapter Studebaker Drivers Club Hazel Holland I was touched when I received a letter from Bonnie L. Oswald, business manager of the Studebaker National Museum, that our Central Texas Chapter Studebaker Drivers Club had made a donation in Don s memory. I appreciate your kindness and will miss seeing all of you. You have a special place in my heart. Thank you for the happy memories I have of the Studebaker Drivers Club. Your friend, Lavern Cooper GERMAN CHOCOLATE UPSIDE DOWN CAKE By Virginia Weaver Step One: 1- cup chopped pecans 1- cup Baker s Angel Flake Coconut In a 9 x 13 baking dish pour the cup of pecans and the cup of coconut evenly in the bottom of the dish. Set aside. Step Two: 1- box German Chocolate cake mix Mix cake mix exactly as directed on the box. Pour batter evenly over the nuts and coconut. Set aside. Step Three: 1- stick of butter/oleo 1-8 oz. pkg. cream cheese (do not use fat free-too watery) 1- box powdered sugar Melt the oleo and cream cheese in microwave until oleo is melted and cream cheese is nearly all melted. Mix together until smooth. Stir in the box of powdered sugar (a little at a time) until all is mixed well. Pour this mixture evenly over the top of the cake mix, pecans and coconut. Bake at 350 deg. until done or until cake pulls away from side of the dish. Cool, serve and ENJOY! EASY JALAPENO DIP by Alice Brooks 2 8-oz boxes of cream cheese (room temperature) 1 12-oz bottle sliced jalapenos (use only ½ of jar) 1 can whole kernel corn Dice half (6 oz) of the jalapeno slices. Drain and discard liquid from can of corn. Combine cream cheese and one-half of the jalapeno juice until smooth. Add diced peppers and corn. Mix thoroughly and add additional juice to obtain desired thinness, if necessary. Refrigerate until ready to serve. (Refrigeration time increases the heat).

9 The Hubcap Page 9 TECH TIPS By Mark Brians This time I will be talking about adding a steering stabilizer to a Studebaker truck since you have your truck running so good that it is hard to keep it in the road now. Steering stabilizers have been around for a long time and they make a straight front axle truck set the road much better. This unit is installed on a 1955 E-7 ½ ton but it should work on most other trucks. I started with a KYB brand kit PN SS15326 from Just Suspension in Denver, North Carolina. I searched for a unit that was not too heavy or big so it would fit my Studebaker. I bolted the end bracket that I modified just to the right of the left spring perch. The block shown in the pictures spaces the bracket out from the center web just the right amount. It is made from ¾ thick steel. The other plate for the front side of the axle is ¼ inch plate to keep it all solid. The axle Center Web is only about ¼ inch thick so it needs the support. I have used the old universal brackets that had U bolts that held a bracket to the axle, but this is much cleaner and better. The 3/8 bolts through the axle need to be grade 5 or better with good lock washers and nuts. You can get the two pieces needed made at most any welding or machine shop if it is beyond your own shop. The pictures show the rest of the install and this is a really fit nice and makes the truck drive much better. This kit was for a 99 up GM 4 wheel drive according to their instruction sheet. I hunted for this kit that I thought would work for days before ordering it. It had most everything in one kit for under $75.00 I plan on putting one of these on my M series truck also. Look at the pictures carefully before you start and if I can help give me a ring. I hope this helps you not fear those pot holes in the road so much and you keep the shiny side up. Mark
