Page 2 PRESIDENT S CORNER By Mark Brians Spring is here again and it s time to get your cars ready to go on our Spring Tour and a bunch of other Studebaker events. There seem to be several things every weekend and many times you have to decide which one to go to. I belong to several different clubs and the choices are tough sometimes. Our Spring Tour is set to go April , 2013, in Waco. We think everyone attending will enjoy it. We have pushed the cutoff for registration back to April 8, The cut off for our block room rate is April 1, 2013, but they will get you in after that. Our last meeting was well attended and everyone had a good time. It is getting harder for us to find places to go and things to see. Could you help us by telling us about things to see where you live and places to meet? We have the schedule set for the rest of 2013 after a trip to Brenham, Independence and Snook. Give us your ideas, please. I hope to see many of you in April on our Spring Tour or at the Bluebonnet Trails Festival in Ennis which is co-hosted by the North Texas Chapter the weekend after our tour. The Hill Country Tour to the YO ranch sounded good, but I was already obligated to go to Ennis. See you soon, I hope. Mark Mark FEBRUARY 2013 MEETING HOLLAND & OSCAR By B.B. Holland On a cloudy and cool Saturday, we began our two-hour trip to Holland and Oscar at 8:00 am on February 9, when the first three of our caravan, Patrick Mahoney in his 50 4-door Champion sedan, and Bill and Diana Osborne in their 57 Silver Hawk joined Hazel and me in our 51 Business Coupe in our driveway. We met Ken and Estella Smith in their 52 4-door Champion sedan and Mick and Sheila Curl in their Brand X at the Kolache Shop in Caldwell. After a snack to fortify us for the long L to R: Onnie Weaver, Bill Osborne, drive, we departed for Holland, Texas. There is no Ken Smith, Larry Brooks direct route from Bryan/College Station to Holland, but we were only five minutes late and it was worth the trip. We were welcomed by Rick and Vicki Slye who own an extensive collection of signs in addition to an assortment of other finely restored memorabilia, including several gas pumps, a vintage coke machine sporting a ten-cent price, a juke box and Mr. Slye s father s 1929 Chevrolet and a manikin dressed as a car hop. The Slyes were very cordial hosts and the museum was a delight. Mr. Slye was the fire chief of Holland, serving 30 years as chief and 48 total years with the fire department. Mrs. Slye is a principal in the Holland School System. We caravanned about 15 miles from Holland to Oscar Texas, where we enjoyed lunch at The Oscar Store. The 50/50 drawing was won by Marvin Winkler, and President Mark Brians had an assortment of goodies for door prizes. He urged everyone to send in their Spring Tour registrations early. He also passed out several meet booklets for the 49th International Studebaker Meet in Colorado Springs, Colorado, June 30 through July 6, 2013.

Page 4 40TH ANNUAL YORK SWAP MEET The Original & Longest Running All-Studebaker Swap Meet By Nick Dynis We had just returned from driving our Studebakers to the Sweethearts and Orphans Car Show in Denton on Sunday but here we were on Tuesday boarding a plane headed for York, PA and the three day all-studebaker swap meet held there every year. True, we have a daughter living just a thirty minute drive from York and we did plan on visiting with her while in Pennsylvania but the York meet played a major role in our deciding to visit in the middle of the winter. I had never attended an all Studebaker swap meet before and was looking forward to it with great expectations. I wasn t disappointed when I got there. Vendor setup was on Thursday morning the 28 th of February and the meet opened to the public at noon that day. We were there by 1:00 p.m. There were vendors still moving into the halls but there were also a large number of vendors already set up and hawking their wares. The meet is held in two large halls which are located next to each other and connected by a hallway and office area as shown in the diagram. The halls are each roughly 120 feet wide and 240 feet long. The East Hall was devoted strictly to Studebaker parts. The West Hall had a few craft vendors located in it but it also was by far devoted mainly to Studebaker parts with a few cars also inside and offered for sale as well. Most of the cars for sale were located outside in the car corral. Outside vendor area and car corral Expecting that there would be more vendors setting up later in the day and early the next morning I didn t purchase anything the first day. The attendance was rather small on Thursday afternoon and it was a good chance to not only see a great deal but also to visit with the vendors who were selling items in which I had an interest or items of the general nature in which I had an interest. I was amazed at the quantity and quality of the parts being offered. NOS parts were everywhere and of almost every description. Vendors were offering fenders, hoods, trunks, body panels, trim, engine parts and more. Not everything you might want was there, but I had never seen such a display of so many great parts just waiting to be taken home by someone who needed them. Most of my interest was in parts for the 1958 Golden Hawk I am trying to restore. While many of the parts for this car are the same as any of the Hawks, there are some parts which are unique to that model alone and there were a couple of items which, if I had found them that first day, I would have made my purchased on the spot. Unfortunately that wasn t to be the case. We returned late morning on Friday realizing that I might miss some great purchase by missing the first few hours but thinking that it would be better to give any new vendors time to get setup and ready to sell. By noon the aisles were packed with people and the parts were walking out the door in a steady flow. I made a tour of both halls before doing any serious purchasing. (By the way I need to point out that all during this time Sally and our daughter Kelly were very patiently wandering up and down the aisles pretending to be excited and interested in all the great Studebaker parts which were to be had at this meet.)

Page 5 I did find some of the unique pieces I was looking for while at the meet. But just as important I also met a lot of nice people from all over the country, made a few new friends, and received a ton of new information that will help me with my project. Thursday afternoon: wide open spaces Friday: Packed with parts and people Here are some pictures of the existing upholstery. Is this a correct color? Wife & Daughter looking & waiting for me to run out of energy or money or both (Continued on page 6)

Page Raffle Prize This year s prize Look at all the pretty shiny stuff! During and after the meet we enjoyed exploring the nearby country side with Kelly acting as our Good buys outside as well chauffeur and tour guide. From Amish buggy rides to covered bridges and the Hershey Chocolate factory, the Pennsylvania country side is full of charm and history. In the city you will find fine dining at a reasonable price, art galleries, and a Farmer s Market ranked 8 th in the entire world. The only Farmer s Market in the United States ranked higher is the one in New York City. There is still plenty left unseen and undone to keep us coming back whenever we can. My thanks to my wife Sally for making pictures of the meet available; I was far too involved to think about that. Since we were flying on this trip, my daughter Kelly now has several really nice, large Studebaker parts under her bed waiting for me to return with a pickup truck this Spring to bring them home. At one point Sally was standing by the entry door loaded down with parts too big for me to carry around while I continued looking up and down the aisles. As two men entered the hall through the entry doors the following statement was overheard: Now there is a good woman! This 1917 era pin was purchased and given to me as a gift from Sally on the first day of the meet. Is she trying to tell me something? I couldn t agree more!

Page 8 TECH TIPS By Mark Brians Bulbs are the topic for this tech tips. I was replacing some instrument bulbs in the dash of my Avanti and bought a box of 1892 bulbs at a local parts house. I pulled the first one out and attempted to put in the new bulb. As I was trying to get it back in the bulb fell out of the socket and hit me in the face. I said something about get it in right, stupid, but when I tried to put it in the socket it fell back out again. I found that the pins on the base bulb were more like bumps than pins. The whole box was that way. The socket is a stamped steel type found on many old cars and these China Texas bulbs will not work with them. I went all over town looking for bulbs with the real pins until I found some new old stock bulbs. The new style bulbs work okay with sockets that have slots cut in the barrel of the socket and the fit is tight. I looked at some other bulbs like 1157 Stop/Tail light and they had smaller and rounder pins on them, too. If you have a stamped type socket, these bulbs are a problem. I found that they may only catch on one side cocking the bulb to one side or it pops out. I found some NOS/NORS bulbs on the internet and ordered them. I plan to look for common bulbs used in our cars at swap meets in the future. Other bulbs in our cars such as headlights are getting hard to find. Six volt, big round or even the 4 headlight round lights are getting scarce. A lot of things you can still find, but who wants to pay $20 for a headlight bulb that was $3.99 at Western Auto. I am lucky enough to have a life time supply of headlight bulbs that I got from the Good Year Service Center stock I bought. So you can add bulbs to your want list when you go to swap meets. Keep those cars driving!! Mark
