2 Page 2 The Hubcap PRESIDENT S CORNER By Mark Brians Spring is sprung and summer is just around the corner. Time is flying by as it is time for our Saturday, June 8, 2013, meeting and mini tour from Independence to Snook for lunch and our meeting. This is right in the Hollands back yard almost. The spring tour is history and we think everyone who came had a good time. The International Meet is just around the corner, and I hope you have made plans to attend. I have been busy on various projects and fixit jobs as always. I have been to several car shows and it seems there is one every weekend. I hope you can make our June meeting and I look forward to seeing you there. Mark SPRING TOUR 2013 WACO, TEXAS By B.B. Holland Pleasant weather, Texas scenery, beautiful cars and good friends! What more could we ask from our weekend spent in Waco, Texas. For the first time in a long time, all the cars participating in the spring tour were vintage, a total of 20: 18 Studebakers, one Hudson and one Ford. Ross Ball had the distinction of driving three Studebakers on the tour. The head count was 37 Central Texas members and guests representing 17 towns and cities in Texas. We began the weekend with lunch at Rudy s Barbeque on the Circle in Waco. After some good food and a caravan through tricky traffic and an unexpected detour, we all made it to the Cameron Zoo, located near the Brazos River and very pretty scenery. B.B. and I were a couple of wusses who stayed in the parking lot, but we had the definite pleasure of watching the gawkers and answering questions about our cars. Around 4 p.m, we began the trek down IH 35 to the Ramada Inn in Hewitt for check-in, rest, and food in the hospitality room. Thanks to all the contributors of goodies. The recipe for Homemade Butterfingers is in the next issue of The Hubcap. Supper was on your own and a bunch of folks made their way to a nearby Dairy Queen. Then, back to the hospitality for more sweets, coffee and sodas. Saturday morning, the Ramada provided a very good hot breakfast, and at 8:45 a.m, we left for the Texas Ranger Museum. Following the showing of a movie on the history of the Texas Rangers, we spent an educational hour viewing the displays and spending money in the gift shop. Back to our cars in order to provide Wacoians with another unscheduled parade as we traveled to the Dr. Pepper Museum. More history, a nice gift shop and Dr. Pepper floats gave us the strength to make it to Tres Mexican Restaurant on 6th Street for lunch. Following lunch, at which both food and service were good, we provided another parade as we traveled to Baylor University s Mayborn Museum Complex. This is a very interesting museum which featured a great Robots & Us display. We definitely recommend a return visit. At 4:00 p.m., we returned to the Ramada for rest and recuperation before driving down IH 35 to one of our favorite meeting places, Raymond s Southern Kitchen in Lorena. We had the big meeting room, which we needed, and the food was, as usual, plentiful and good. We returned to the motel for tire kickin, conversation and more food. Following the good breakfast Sunday morning, we bid good friends goodbye and headed home.

EPA WANTS TO INCREASE ETHANOL CONTENT TO 30 PER CENT A recent article in Hemmings Daily reports on the EPA s proposal to increase the current mixture of 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline to 30% ethanol/70% gasoline. The New York Times announced that the EPA s suggestion was included in a report on sulfur levels in fuel. The EPA is also urging car manufacturers to increase the compression ratios on new cars in order to better handle ethanol fuel. The article also references the concern of vintage car owners and the damage ethanol can do to our vehicles. There are two bills in Congress introduced this year, House Bill 875 and Senate Bill 344, calling for suspension of the sale of ethanol 15, pending further study. Those bills are in currently in committee. Nick Dynis forwarded the referenced article to your editor and suggests that concerned car collectors might want to write both their federal and state legislators urging them to ban ethanol in our fuel. Note: You can read the entire article dated May 17, 2013, on the Hemmings Daily website. If you are reading this on your computer, click on this link to go directly to the article. 5 The Hubcap Page 5 The Weatherman s promised rainy weather was not present when we left Flatonia headed for Denton on Thursday morning. Sally was in her 1961 Hawk and I was driving my trusty 1964 Wagonaire. We were driving up on Thursday to allow us time to visit the swap meet in Decatur on Friday. We stayed on the back roads as much as possible where we could enjoy the scenery rather than taking the faster, boring Interstate Highways. It was a pleasant and uneventful trip until Sally apparently lost her brake light switch just outside of Denton. We went straight to the host motel which we found to be very nice and a great value for the price. Sally and I both enjoy reading so it was natural for us to make visiting an old book store our next activity. I had made a note about a book store in Denton a year or so ago but had never gotten around to visiting it. This was our chance and we were sure glad that we took it. Hidden away in Denton, Texas is one of the nicest used book stores that I have ever visited and I have been in a bunch of old book stores all over the United States and a few foreign countries. We spent the rest of the day enjoying ourselves wandering around inside that great store. SWEETHEARTS AND ORPHANS By Nick Dynis Friday morning continued to be overcast; still no rain, but the temperature had dropped considerably over night. We loaded up in the Wagonaire and took off for Decatur about mid-morning. The meet was well underway when we got there with a huge number of vendors strung out in row after row. Studebaker parts are never really evident in any great quantity at such meets and that, plus the cold wind, soon had us headed back to Denton. Saturday morning was again still overcast and even colder than the day before. The show had requested that the cars be in place in a parking lot just off the downtown square from 9:30a.m. to 3:00p.m. so we left the hotel right after breakfast. On the way to the show we experienced our second minor problem when Sally pulled over saying that the car was making a terrible noise. We switched cars and started out again for the next block where I pulled over and disconnected the speedometer cable in the Hawk. Sally was right, it was making a terrible noise. Luckily the Hawk also has a tachometer so Sally was still able to tell what speed she was driving. The show had a pretty good assortment of Orphans. The last I heard they were saying that they had a little over 60 cars entered. There were at least 11 Studebakers on display, the Hawks being the largest group by model and, according to the North Texas Wheel, tied with the Oldsmobile group for the largest number of cars by manufacturer. Dale Truitt, the President of the North Texas SDC, had done a great job of directing everyone as they arrived so that most of the cars were grouped together by make. I can t remember the last time I saw so many Hudsons all parked next to each other. Con t on next page
6 Page 6 The Hubcap SWEETHEARTS AND ORPHANS Continued Hudson Pickup Hudson Sedan There was a 1909 Sears Motor Buggy and a 1910 Hudson for the earliest in the show. Both of these were outstanding restorations. The Sears had a holder for, and a buggy whip in it, right at the front of the car. The owner explained that the tires were so narrow on the Sears that they got stuck all the time and most owners just carried the buggy whip to use when they were being pulled out of the mud by a horse Sears Motor Buggy Willys Knight (I didn t get the year) It took a lot of polish to get this 1910 Hudson ready for the show
7 The Hubcap Page 7 SWEETHEARTS AND ORPHANS Continued The Hudson brought his grandson with him and we brought our granddaughters! The crowd was light for the first three hours or so which probably was a result of the cool weather. By noon the sun was out and while the temperature might not have been much warmer, the sun made the rest of the afternoon very nice indeed. Mark Brians, President of the Central Texas SDC chapter, was there driving his AMC Matador and enjoying being just a participant without all the responsibilities he usually has at an event. AMC Matador Mark was incognito in his AMC Matador but he didn t fool us! Con t on next page
8 Page 8 The Hubcap SWEETHEARTS AND ORPHANS Continued We were lucky enough to be joined by two of our daughters, their husbands, and, of course, our four grandchildren. What a great way to top off a very nice car show. The trip home Sunday was as uneventful as the trip up with lots of thumbs up and 30 minute stops for fuel while answering the questions about the cars. It was a good show and great weekend. I am always amazed by the people that say You drove all that way in your Studebaker? Makes me wonder if they thought that people in the 1960s never drove more than 15 miles from home! 9 The Hubcap Page 9 TECH TIPS By Mark Brians This time I have a story to tell about what went wrong and lessons learned. It all started when I decided to drive my 55 Studebaker pickup to the Bluebonnet-Antique American Independent Automobile Car Show, held on April 20 in Ennis, which is a little over a hundred miles from home. This show is hosted by the North Texas Chapter, Studebaker Drivers Club. I went up I-35 and was about to get off in Italy (Texas, that is) when the engine burped once. I thought, What was that about? Going on into Ennis it missed a little and seemed to be running out of gas. I turned on my booster electric fuel pump and it seemed to help. I thought that my mechanical pump could be going bad. The car show was nice and about 3:15 pm, I started home. It ran, but not very well. It seemed to come and go. I made it back to I-35 and got on the interstate. The road is so rough and the truck was running badly at times, making it hard to get over 55 mph. I made it down to Waco and stopped for gas. I raised the hood, looked things over, started it back up and it seemed ok. I got back on I-35 and it ran okay all the way to my exit in Belton. I thought I must have had bad gas. I exited, made a left turn to get on FM 436 and it just died. The starter turned it over but no go and I could see gas squirting from the accelerator pump. A very nice fellow offered to pull me the three miles to the house and I was glad as I was right in the middle of the street. The next morning I pulled the distributor cap and found that the rotor tip was burnt off about a half inch. The PerTronix ignition had failed and that stopped me. The rotor arcing, I think, caused it to fail. This is a Delco distributor and the rotor has a round carbon resistor on it. That it is what failed and the spark was so strong that it continued to jump almost an inch to the cap contacts. This truck had a Per- Tronix flame thrower coil added when the PerTronix electronic ignition was installed, and it is rated at 40,000 volts spark, about twice the stock coil. It did not have a resistor to the coil and PerTronix does not require it, but you can run one. I think that the coil is just too hot for this distributor s rotor without a resistor. I replaced the cap, rotor and PerTronix ignition and connected a resistor to the coil. I plan to keep an eye on the rotor for signs of arcing and may take that super duper coil off. If it causes more problems, I have a set of points and a new rotor in my tool box now. It was one very long trip back from Ennis on I-35 road. Keep them rolling. Mark
