2 Page 2 The Hubcap PRESIDENT S CORNER By Mark Brians Saturday, December 13, 2014, is our next meeting and Christmas Party here in Belton at our car ranch. See page one here in the Hubcap for important details. I have invited the South Texas Hudson club to join us again this year. We will be having homemade Mexican food. We will have our Crazy Christmas gift exchange so bring a wrapped gift of about $10 for each person who wishes to participate. We are furnishing the meal but are asking for people to bring a new medium size stuffed animal or donate $5 per person which will be used to buy more teddy bears. We will donate all the stuffed animals to the Texas Highway Patrol to be given out to children involved in car wrecks. We will start and eat at 12:30 pm, but come early if you like. It s hard to believe that this year is almost gone. I hope it was a good year for you and your family. I got a lot done this year on my cars but not nearly enough. Could I have too many projects, you ask. Yes, but it makes life interesting. Check out the Spring Tour information in this Hubcap and start making your plans to join us. Please note the March 1, 2015, deadline for our block of rooms at the motel and make your reservations right away. This area is very busy in April and reasonable motels are hard to find. Come join us here in Belton for a good time and meet new people while celebrating Christmas See you soon! Mark TINA MUSE NOWAK Longtime Central Texas Chapter member, Tina Nowak, wife of Leon Nowak passed away Tuesday morning, November 11, at her home in Navasota. Tina had been in poor health for some time, and we have been missing her and Leon at meetings. Services were under the direction of Lindley-Robertson-Holt Funeral Home, and a funeral mass was celebrated at 10:30 am Friday, November 14, at Christ Our Light Catholic Church in Navasota, with internment in St Stanislaus Church Cemetery in Anderson. Tina was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Vancy Muse, a son, Walter Nowak and brother, Mike Muse. Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Leon Nowak, a son, Frank and wife, Dana and grandchildren, Kaden and Becker of Austin, a sister, Mary Stempahowski and nephew, Frank Ed Stempahowski, both of Chappell Hill.
3 The Hubcap Page 3 OCTOBER PICNIC, 2014 Although we sang, Rain, rain, go away, it didn t! Not until it was too late to change the decision to drive a Brand X, so only the intrepid drove a Studebaker to College Station for the 36th annual Central Texas Chapter picnic. Sixty -six folks, including a significant number of the Holland family were present for a catered lunch. We had 13 Studebakers, most of those owned by the host, B.B. Holland, who didn t have to drive them very far in the rain. The intrepid ones were Nick Dynis, 61 Hawk, Mark Brians, 65 Commander, Matt Pautz, 82 Avanti II, Tom Ossowski, 73 Avanti I and Joe Beatty, 75 Avanti I. We don t blame those who didn t want to get their precious babies out in the rain. The 50/50 was won by Kirk and Lisa Smith, $76.00 to them and $76.00 to the chapter. Our president, Mark Brians, displayed the two new chapter banners. (See photos in this issue of The Hubcap.) Those attending were: Mark Brians, Belton; Ken & Estella Smith, Hempstead; Bill and Diana Osborne, College Station; Tony & Shirley Darrow, Houston; Kirk & Lisa Smith, Cedar Creek; Terry Crain & Sandra Kalousek, Marquez; Charles Harrison, Richmond; Kelvin & Lisa Kelm, Katy; Janeen & Don Wood, College Station; Tony Carter, College Station; Jerry Redman, Washington, DC; Margie Morris, College Station; Mary Ann Kiel, Richmond; Joyce Marchisio, College Station; Larry & Alice Brooks, Weatherford; Newell Slavin, San Antonio; Ray, Marianne, James & Madison Alcorn & Bill Marshall & Doris Wilson, Magnolia; Mason & Doris Newton, College Station, TX; Mike & Denise Carter, Webster; Scott & Dawn Isensee, Austin; Joe & Karen Clark, Cameron; Mick & Sheila Curl, Bellville; Ross Ball, Lorena; Matt Pautz, Houston; Tom Ossowski, Willis; Joe Beatty, Houston; Nick Dynis, Flatonia; Buddy & Joyce Pyle, Chappell Hill; Brad Putchat, Leroy; Steve Starett, Baytown; B.B. & Hazel Holland, College Station; Dillen Ashton, Sydney and Michael Holmes, College Station; Spencer Slavin, Breanna Gonzales, Josh and Margaret, College Station; Grace Kelm, San Marcos; John & Donna Brooks, Hamilton; Larry & Chris Dover, College Station; Mary Lavender, Carlos; Anthony Carter, College Station.
4 Page 4 The Hubcap TECH TIPS By Mark Brians Have you noticed cold air coming in under the dash or the passenger seat this winter? Or if you are blessed with air conditioning in your car, does it seem to be warm under the dash? I have looked for holes or leaks in the firewall, but still seem to have leaks. Many of our old cars have a cable to turn the heat off. It goes to a valve in the air duct. The other cable regulates the water valve for the heater. I seem to overlook the air valve. In December I had the heater turned off water and air, but I was still getting cold air from somewhere. There is a round flapper valve in the distribution duct just past the heater core and blower under the dash. I found that the flapper had two C-shaped foam rubber pieces that were falling apart leaving a ¼ inch gap for air to pass by. It not only let cold air in when I had the heater off but it let in outside hot air in the summer that was fighting the air conditioner. I drilled out two rivets to get the flapper out and made new seals from 1/16 in neoprene and glued it in place. I used 6-32 screws to replace the rivets to put it back together. Most of our old cars have air valves and vents which have seals that after 40 to 50 years have gone to pot. So no longer blame those air leaks on just the door gaskets. Check out those air valves in the shop manual or take a few minutes to look at how the air flows into your car. I hate to think how much gas I wasted trying to cool all that hot air in the car. Do you have a Tech Tip??? Send it in and help everyone. You do not have to be a writer, as you can see by my Tech Tip. Don t just look at that old car! Drive it! Mark
