1 THE RECREATION READER Recreation for Individuals Who Are Blind and Visually Impaired - January 2011, Issue CVRP Camp DAY CAMP - BRIDGEPORT By Paula Lang CVRP hosted their annual summer institute day camp in Bridgeport, WV June 14-18, Campers enjoyed skill classes that included cooking, crafts, braille instruction & social skills. Twenty campers attended the summer institute. Special guests this year included a Science on the Road presentation by the Carnegie Science Center, representatives and a search dog from the FBI center. Each camper received a child safety kit which included their personal information and photo. We took a field trip to the WVU Coliseum where campers toured the facility, were able to shoot some hoops and meet WVU Men s Basketball star, Kevin Jones. 2 CVRP Campers at the WVU Coliseum Continued from page 1 coliseum, campers enjoyed the sights, sounds and tastes of lunch at Fujiyama Japanese Steakhouse. OVERNIGHT CAMP - PIPESTEM CVRP hosted their annual overnight Summer Institute for 2010 in Pipestem, WV July 6-8. Campers enjoyed skill classes that included cooking, crafts, social skills, independent living skills and braille instruction. Fifteen campers attended the summer institute. Our field trip included a trip to the mall, dinner and then the WV Outdoor Theatre for the production of Footloose. Campers also enjoyed activities such as swimming, horseback riding, and games. 3 DOGGIE BARK (Dog Treat) 4 cups carob chips* 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter 1/2 cup dry-roasted peanuts or chopped walnuts 1/4 teas. cinnamon 1. In a bowl, melt the carob chips in the microwave for 30 seconds. Stir them with a wooden spoon, then microwave for 30 seconds more. 2. Stir in peanut butter and microwave for another 15 seconds. Stir the ingredients again to combine. 3. Add the nuts and the cinnamon, then stir the mixture to coat the nuts. 4. Line an edged cookie sheet with aluminum foil and lightly spray the foil with nonstick cooking spray. Pour the mixture onto the foil and chill it for 15 minutes in the freezer or 30 minutes in the refrigerator. 5. Remove the bark and break it into roughly 1- by 2-inch pieces. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. *Carob chips seem to be hard to find these days--i ordered mine from a health food store. The reason for carob is that it's supposed to be better for dogs to eat than chocolate, however, there is no reason you couldn't use chocolate chips and make this into a people snack.

4 SKATEBOARDING Here's a sport we don't often talk about when we're speaking about recreational opportunities for individuals who are blind and visually impaired, but the October 2010 Scholastic ACTION Magazine featured a young man named Tommy Carroll. Tommy is a high school student near Chicago and he's totally blind from retinoblastoma. When he was in 6th grade, he tried skateboarding and liked it because it was an individual sport. When he was younger, he ran, swam and biked, but needed assistance. He took karate, but when he got to the advanced level, the teachers were afraid he'd get hurt and didn't let him participate. "In elementary school, recess was tough. 'The big thing for all the boys was to play football,' he remembers. Tommy wanted to play, but his friends weren't sure how to include him in the games. Usually he was left out." At a local skate park, he learned the layout by walking it one part at a time. He pictured the park "in his mind." The different sounds of the wheels on various ramps told him where he was. Even though he fell a lot, he didn't give up. He says he hasn't broken many bones, but does get some bad bruises. He also came up with different tricks from others, since he couldn't see to imitate what others did. Eventually, Tommy got to meet his idol, Tony Hawk and was able to interview him for his website and his school's radio station. He is thinking of becoming a reporter someday. (And he removes them in the video at Tony's request.)

5 SOME MORE MINUTE- TO- WIN- IT CONTESTS If you've watched this game show, you know it takes common items and invents competitions with them that contestants must perform in 1 minute. Of course, you can expand the time or compete against another person. At Christmas time, they added some holiday-themed contests and those are also on the website given below. 1. Pink Elephant: Using a headband, attach a plastic Slinky onto your head. Swinging it with just your head, try to get it stacked on your forehead. 2. Christmas Jingle: 11 glasses have differing amounts of water (and someone musical must set these up). The contestant must play Jingle Bells on them. 3. Nervous Nelly: Attach pedometers to both hands and both legs. You must get them to total 500 clicks. 4. Baby Rattle: Transfer gumballs from one 2-litre bottle to another when they are taped together at the mouth and you have one set in each hand. 4. I've seen this one on the show, but didn't see it on the website. It seems quite appropriate for those with visual impairments. There are 7 gift wrapped boxes, all the same size. Sealed inside are different amounts of bells. They must be arranged from the least to the most by shaking and/or lifting the boxes to determine in what order they should be in. (It gave the answers on a flap on the box so you didn't need to open them to check the answers.) 6 Get Into the Arts A program through the Center for Excellence in Disabilities called ROMPP (Real Opportunities Make People Productive) can assist those with disabilities who want to get involved in the arts within their community. Help can be given to individuals of any age and for those who are interested in art as a profession, a hobby or just to explore. Program Coordinator, Helen Panzironi, is looking for programs that would like their assistance in making the fine arts more accessible and looking for ways to include disabled artists into existing art programs.
