1 Boy Scouts of America Western Los Angeles County Council Western E Trails E Bringing You This Week in Scouting! May 3, 2006 New Items in This Issue! Editor: Romy Longwell Western Los Angeles County Council Sherman Way, #C 8 Van Nuys, CA (818) Rlongwell@bsa la.org Fire Bans and Cooking Requirement for Advancement A significant part of the country is currently under fire bans that prevent the use of open flames outdoors. Some of these bans have been in effect more than six months and are preventing Scouts from completing Tenderfoot requirement 3 and Second Class requirements 2e, 2f, and 2g. The National Advancement Committee has approved the substitution, during periods of fire bans only of the use of a cook stove or, when no outdoor cooking is allowed, completion of these requirements over a kitchen stove. Please appreciate the importance of these exceptions to Scouts and leaders currently working on these requirements. These substitutions are allowed only during periods of fire bans. Terry C. 9 The Bill Hart District is having a wonderful Cub Scout Cup for your boys. This is put on by their District, but is open to anyone interested. Just register on line, or contact Robert Bell at robertb@pack494.org Check out the special bonus gift for your boys from Mountasia! Please pass this on to everyone you know. Cub Scout Cup coming in May to Hart Park SANTA CLARITA You will never forget the feeling of anticipation and exhilaration of making it over the mud pit, across the balance beam, through the tires and across the finish line. Luckily, some local cub scouts will find out at the First Annual Cub Scout Cup held Saturday, May 13, 2006 at Hart Park campgrounds. Like an Olympic style event, the Cub Scout Cup will be an all day team based competition with mental and physical challenges building teamwork and reinforcing scouting values taught through out the year. Teams will be made up den teams from all 37 William S. Hart District Cub Scout packs. I was attending Wood Badge, an advanced training program for the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), and looking for ideas, said Robert Bell, Cub Cup Event Director and Committee Chair for Pack 494. I wanted to come up with a program that the boys would be excited about but also strengthen the skills and values they'd been learning; I needed a game with a purpose. The game with a purpose is the Cub Scout Cup. The event is designed to bring scouts together as a pack like a space derby, raingutter regatta and pinewood derby. Bell added that the Cub Scout Cup started as a simple idea that 9 and 10 year old boys would go wild at the prospect of winning a giant cup trophy. Cub Scouts, several times a year have great derbies where they compete individually, here they must help the pack go. Scouts will compete in a variety of events like an obstacle course, navigation course, relay races, teamwork challenges and Scouting knowledge. Each scout will participate with his own den to make a team. Scores will be averaged to create a pack score and the pack with the best score takes home the cup and bragging rights for a whole year. Registration for the event has been extended to April 14, but there is a limit of teams that can be entered, so it is recommended that scouts register early. The cost is $8.00 per scout and each team needs a BSA registered adult leader and one adult volunteer. Each competing scout will receive a patch and a participating ribbon. The way to register is to visit the Cub Cup website www. cubscoutcup.org. Besides the team events each team will be judged on their scout spirit. Team banners, tee shirts, songs and overall scout excitement will be what the judges will be looking for. Creativeness is encouraged. Lunch can be brought picnic style, but Troop 2379 will be selling hot barbecue lunches the day of the event. In Cub Scouting, boys and their families have fun and adventure in a program that builds character and instills values. Cub Scouting embraces the values of citizenship, compassion, cooperation, courage, faith, health and fitness, honesty, perseverance, positive attitude, resourcefulness, respect, and responsibility. These values come to boys in all parts of the Cub Scout program all while they're having a great time with their friends and families. If the competition is not enough one of the Platinum sponsors Mountasia Fun Center has agree to give each paid participant a voucher for game of golf and 15 game tokens worth more than $10. The public is invited to watch the event and visit the cub scout recruiting booth to learn more about scouting. In addition the event has sponsorship and donation opportunities to support the day long competition. Donations are tax deductible and different levels of sponsorship have been set up to support the event. For more information about Cub Scout Cup please contact Robert Bell, Cub Cup Event Director at robertb@pack494. org or (661)
