1 October 2, 2009 Editor's Note: The Sheriff's Office Weekly Rap-Up comes out on Friday afternoon, and includes any announcements, important messages, or not so important messages that employees of the Sheriff's Office would like to communicate to the rest of the agency. If you have something you would like to communicate, please send it to me and I will be happy to include it. Send it to beckyherrin@keysso. net, or in the courier to Deputy Becky Herrin, Community Relations Division, Headquarters building on Stock Island. Help design an agency patch All you artists out there...we need your help. Sheriff Peryam would like a new agency patch, to go along with the new uniform shirts that are on order (paid for from forfeiture money - not taxpayer funds!). He would like you to submit your ideas for what the patch should look like. Preferably, it will utilize the Sheriff s star, and the state of Florida...but with a Keysey flair, if you know what I mean. It should be about the same size as the current patch, but doesn t necessarily need to be the same exact shape. Try your hand at it and see what you come up with. Send your designs to Director Becky Herrin at the Community Relations Division at Headquarters by October 15th. Digital versions for you computer artists can be sent to beckyherrin@keysso.net. Deputies, Troopers remember Deputy Nick Pham Sheriff's deputies and Florida Highway Patrol Troopers gathered roadside in memorial of Deputy Nick Pham who died in November of 2008 in a traffic accident. A roadside sign memorializing his death was installed Wednesday at the 62 mile marker of Highway U.S. One, next to a homemade sign and memorial that has been there since he died, November 26, The sign simply says, "Drive Safely in memory of MCSO Deputy Nick Pham". "We can only hope Nick's death - and the sign memorializing him - will stand as a reminder to everyone driving on Highway U.S. One to be careful out there," said Sheriff Bob Peryam. "Nick is and will always be remembered and missed by us all here at the Sheriff's Office." The Sheriff's Office has lost four deputies in traffic accidents since 1989.

4 Letters of Thanks and Commendation Editor s Note: I got behind on these a little, but I promise to do better in the future. These letters are from March until now... Two New York City visitors wrote to Captain Lou Caputo to thank Sgt. Tom Kiffney and Deputies Jason Keith and Tony Conde for their "astounding help and thoughtful conduct" during and accident investigation in August. In August, for a short time our Communications Division experienced a total phone system failure with no calls coming in or going out. Those on duty worked together to make sure calls were immediately rerouted to Key West Police until the problem could be resolved. Thank goodness it was resolved quickly, but the following people deserve recognition for handling what could have been a real disaster in a smooth, and professional manner: Acting Supervisor Michelle Rabinowitz and Communications Officers Crystal Rendon, Teri Roberts and Alisa Vartumyan. Nina Lopez Cantera, Correctional Probation Supervisor, wrote to express her appreciation for law enforcement assistance during a recent Sex Offender sweep. She thanks, in particular, Detectives Linda Mixon, Deb Ryan and Deputy Jason Keith. Denise Wilcox and Richard Hall of Big Coppitt Key wrote to praise Deputy John McGee for his effectiveness in patrolling their Big Coppitt neighborhood. John and Linda Manfroy of Big Pine Key wrote to commend Debra Ritchason for her hard work in obtaining fingerprints for them for a concealed firearm's license. Lt. Sgt. Suzanne Morgan wrote to commend the entire team that helped located a deceased man in Crane Hammock in July. From the Sheriff's Office, she commended Deputies Mark Maison, Melissa Powers, Bobby Burkett. Members of Marathon Fire Rescue and Islamorada Fire Rescue were also commended for their actions. Sgt. Morgan was also on the scene and herself deserves recognition. Deputy Rosa DiGiovanni received a commendation from Sgt. Suzanne Morgan for saving a man from a structure fire at Trailerama Trailer Park in April. FBI Special Agent Kevin White wrote to commend Deputy David Lariz for his part in apprehending a bank robbery suspect in June. Sgt. Dawn Leird wrote a letter of appreciation to Lt. Corey Bryan and Deputy George Rosemeyer. The PK Courthouse went though a period when they were shorthanded and she thanks Lt. Bryan for assigning Deputy Rosemeyer to her frequently to cover the shortage. Lt. Gene Thompson recommended a life saving award for Deputies John McGee and Luis Blasco for saving a man from a trailer fire at Leo's Campground on Stock Island in May. Trip Selman, Scout Executive with the Northeast Georgia Council, Boy Scouts of America wrote to thank Corrections Officer Jim O'Neill for his help with a Boy Scout camp in Clayton, Georgia during the summer. Captain Penny Phelps recommended a Sheriff's Medal for Finance Executive Director Amy Heavilin; Amy helped Captain Tim Age, who was having a stroke and didn't realize it. She recognized what was happening and called 911, staying with him until help arrived. Meri-de Mercado, and instructor for American Heart Saver training wrote to Sheriff Peryam to thank Vicki Jason for her continuing efforts in facilitating CPR / AED training in the Keys. Rudy Gonzalez, Secretary of the Police Officers Assistance Trust (POAT) wrote to thank the Sheriff's Office Traffic Enforcement Unit for their help with their Semi-Annual Cops Ride for Kids in May.
