On the left, he spoke to a crowd gathered for the annual State-wide hurricane conference. In the center, he delivered a check to representatives of Coral Shores High School Project Graduation. On the right, he is pictured with the featured speaker at the recent Law Enforcement Luncheon from JIATF, Deputy Chief of their Strategic Initiative Group Barret Bryant. Bomb Squad Tech Deputy Aaron Coller speaking to members of Marathon Rotary about the equipment and capabilities of the team. Sgt. Spenser Bryan and Deputy Gil Gonzalez spoke to Key Largo Rotary about the Special Weapons and Tactics team. Lt. Gene Thompson and Sgt. Linda Mixon were part of a group bagging groceries at Publix in Marathon for Habitat of the Middle Keys. Lower Keys Detectives David Cruz, David Fernandez, Spencer Curry and Sgt. David Smith, all trained in properly fitting bike helmets, teamed up with Poinciana School to make sure students were properly fitted with new helmets, which they got to take home for free. Sgt. David Lariz volunteered behind the grill at Key West High School Baseball games in April, batching up hamburgers and hot dogs at the concession stand. Deputy Christopher Kilmurray reads to kids at Treasure Village Montessori and talks to them about when and how to call 911. Weekly Rap Up - Page 2
3 Sgt. Steven Katz daughter won the Owlstanding Spirit Award at the annual awards show at Florida Atlantic University where she plays softball for the school in her Junior year. Former employees Debbie Shepherd and Sally Ann Crawford got together recently when Debbie was in training with FEMA in Alabama. They spent the day together and took this picture to say hello to all of us here in the Keys! Debbie is now in Montana and Sally Ann is in Anniston, Alabama. Deputy Boyd Williams and his colleagues in the Training Unit got together last week to give blood. Here he is enjoying the experience. Sgt. Evan Calhoun helped the woman on the left rescue this bird, which had a hook and line in its beak. They took the bird to the nearby Wildlife Rescue facility at Indigenous park, where Peggy the expert took over the bird s care. This dedicated group from the Lower Keys sacrificed themselves to participate in a Conch Fritter eating contest to raise money for the Autism Speaks foundation. 4 Traffic Deputy Jason Keith, and his never ending war against fishing line (and other trash found roadside). Sheriff Rick Ramsay spotted this graffiti in Marathon and painted it out this week. Deputy Vince Pacifico, on the left painting out graffiti and above, picking up this netting left alongside the road in the Lower Keys. Below, he and Deputy Alexandra Davis cleaned up at the corner of 5th and 3rd on Stock Island. Deputy James Hager and FWC Officer Lopez got a tip about these barrels, floating bayside of Cow Key Channel. They pulled them from the water and disposed of them properly. 5 Great turnout for the I Love Stock Island cleanup, despite the rain and miserable weather. Cadet and Explorer activities Explorer post 906 in the Middle Keys delivered goodies to Sheriff s Office Communications Officers in appreciation for all they do. Upper Keys Cadets from Post 905 learned about fitness by going to the gym and training together. Upper Keys Explorers from Post 905 patrolled Coral Shores High School in squads of three. They were sent on calls, used proper radio codes and handled various calls for service, including a silver alert call, and an injured person call where they had to request rescue and administer first aid. Logan Arbotast was visiting the Keys with his family and wanted a picture with Sgt. Jason Madnick and his squad members. Logan, who is 15 years old, is here with the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Sgt. Ward invited FWCs Drug Recognition Experts along with Florida Highway Patrol to roll call training. Lt. Mike Haney and Investigator Paul Hein who were recently certified as DREs, gave an overview of what to look for and procedures to follow when dealing with impaired subjects. Special thanks to Lt. Haney, Investigator Hein and Sgt. Reinoso with FHP for taking the time to make this happen and for working with us here at MCSO as we continue to build and strengthen our Law Enforcement relationships. Weekly Rap Up - Page 6 Sgt. Above and below, cleaning trash out of mangroves near 132nd Street and U.S. One in Marathon. Deputies Hughes- Buxton, Swilley, Baer and an inmate worker from the Marathon jail. Deputy Shannon Jones was patrolling at Hawk s Cay and met these two cute visitors from Denmark. They wanted their picture taken with her and she gave them a Junior Deputy badge to take home as a souvenir. Deputy Jose Gonzalez learning about Stinger Spikes during FTO training with Sgt. Nick Whiteman. Deputies Matthew Pitcher and Rosary Ponce speak to Marathon Rotary about Crime Prevention.
