1 January 8, 2010 Editor's Note: The Sheriff's Office Weekly Rap-Up comes out on Friday afternoon, and includes any announcements, important messages, or not so important messages that employees of the Sheriff's Office would like to communicate to the rest of the agency. If you have something you would like to communicate, please send it to me and I will be happy to include it. Send it to beckyherrin@keysso. net, or in the courier to Deputy Becky Herrin, Community Relations Division, Headquarters building on Stock Island. SROs need help with Cadet / Explorers If you like kids and want to help mentor a group of kids who are interested in law enforcement - get involved with the Sheriff s Office Cadet / Explorer Program. School Resource Officers are the advisors for the program, but need help with weekly training sessions and other activities. If you are interested, call or Sonya Morgan in the lower Keys, Glenn Test in the middle Keys and Beverly Brazil, Larry O Neill or Will Schlegelmilch in the upper Keys. Wright Express Gas Cards The Finance Division has finished the distribution of the Wright Express gas cards. The new program should make it more convenient for all of us to obtain gas and keep our records accurate. We wanted to emphasize that the gas cards were issued to the unit and not the driver and the gas cards should always stay with the unit. At this time, all black and white gas keys and old gas credit cards should be turned into your supervisor. Please note that Chief Rice has put the County on notice that we will no longer be purchasing gas from them on a routine basis. Should you have any problems or question regarding the Wright Express credit cards, please do not hesitate to contact Carol Stephens at ext SmartCOP Update Please keep social security numbers out of the narratives, social security numbers should be put in the MNI only. They are not public records and must be redacted if you include them in narratives, making it very difficult on folks in the Records Division. Continued on the next page Communications Director Anne Leonard took a trip to the upper Keys with Supervisor Terry Story, who was driving. When they arrived Terry locked the car s keys inside and they had to be rescued by someone with a slim jim. Here is Sheriff Peryam with Anne and the slim jim used to save the day!

4 Sheriff s Office employees county-wide spent countless personal hours collecting toys and money to benefit needy kids and families in the Florida Keys. We should all be proud of their efforts. They collected thousands of dollars, thousands of toys and helped hundreds of families have a wonderful Christmas. In particular, Peggy Bryan, Linda Mixon, Dennis Coleman and Tiffany O Connell organized toy drives, but they had many, many helpers and thanks go out to anyone and everyone who contributed time, money or toys. Lt. Corey Bryan helped Santa out by making appearances for him in the upper Keys. Here he is (left) at an upper Keys preschool listening to Christmas wishes and with the office staff at the Plantation Key substation (above).

5 On the right, Sgt. Eric Mixon giving K-Mart gift cards to kids at the Plantation Key Children s Shelter on Christmas Eve. The cards were courtesy of Toyz for Keyz Kidz. Sgt. Mixon has started a group to help teens called Helping Teens Overcome Obstacles (HTOO). Yes, there really was snow on Summerland Key at Christmas! The Weather Channel sponsored a contest and the winner was a Summerland Key man...he won a white Christmas! In the top photo, Sgt. Mike DiGiovanni and Lt. Gene Thompson were at the home to make sure traffic didn t get out of hand. In the bottom photo, kids enjoy the snow.
