The next Weekly Rap Up will be out on June 1st Explorers visit Umatilla Sheriff s Explorers took a trip to Umatilla, Florida this past weekend to participate in the 2012 Spring

Training topics for the camp included Hostage Negotiations, Bomb Threat, Shoot / Don t Shoot, Arrest and Search Techniques and Interview Techniques.

Only one explorer had ever attended one of these events, so five had no idea what to expect.

In evaluations done at the end of the event, our scenario was rated highest by all the kids who participated.

Training topics for the camp included Hostage Negotiations, Bomb Threat, Shoot / Don t Shoot, Arrest and Search Techniques and Interview Techniques. SRO / Explorer Advisors James Jenkins and Will Schlegelmilch accompanied six explorers to the event. Only one explorer had ever attended one of these events, so five had no idea what to expect. Our group ran one of the scenarios - the Shoot / Don t Shoot scenario utilizing paint ball guns. In evaluations done at the end of the event, our scenario was rated highest by all the kids who participated. Explorers Adriana Vazquez and Cindy Zaldivar performed the best out of any others in the Bomb Threat scenario, so Kudos to them for doing so well. Both are fairly new to the program, and had never gone to one of these events before. Hats off, as well, to Thomas Mirabella who received the Most Improved award at the training camp. The ceremony will be held this year at St. Mary s Star of the Sea Church in Key West at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 18th. It will be hosted by Key West Police and the Monroe County Sheriff s Office and will include the traditional laying of the wreath, Honor Guard with 21 gun salute and the Police Pipe and Drum Corp of Florida. Nationally, 166 officers were killed in the line of duty in In Florida, 12 officers were killed. Fortunately, none were killed last year in Monroe County, but historically 10 officers have been killed in the line of duty in our county. Remember Erin? 4 Monroe County Police Unity Tour team... The Monroe County participants in the Police Unity Tour arrived this week in Virginia to beautiful weather and temperatures in the 70s. The crew checked into their hotel the first night (top photo). Then, during a mandatory riders meeting, Captain Penny Phelps won a Trek road bicycle in a raffle (top right). The bike will be ridden in the tour by Inspector Gary Byfield of the London Metropolitan Police. It will go to Penny at the end of the tour. On the right, the group is shown ready for their first day of riding. The first day is the longest with riders traveling 120 miles. In th ephoto with the red jeep, riders finish the first day, exhausted after having ridden 110 miles with a headwind of mph all day.
