1 West Yorkshire NPT Issue 7 Winter 2010/11 Caring for Life Page 1-2 Latest Operational Updates Page 3 Our latest recruit Page 4 Working together - for a safer Dewsbury Page 5 Contacts and our area Page 6 Editors: Tony Bilinski & Ben Whitaker PC Kev Webster with PCSOs Stephen Yates and Tony Bilinski, along with staff from First Trans Pennine Express at Caring For Life in Cookridge, Leeds Caring For Life In December 2010, PC Kev Webster, PCSOs Stephen Yates and Tony Bilinski of the Neighbourhood Policing Team were Christmas hamper packing at Caring for Life, based in Cookridge, Leeds. CFL ( Caring for Life ) are a Christian charity who receive support from rail operator First Trans Pennine Express. The charity care for people who have lacked positive experiences early in their life. They also care for people who have moderate or significant learning difficulties, finding it difficult to cope with everyday life experiences. Whilst homelessness is often the initial reason for people coming to CFL s attention, housing someone often only addresses one problem in that person s life. By tackling underlying problems, CFL can provide a new beginning or fresh start for someone. The projects at CFL address fundamental issues such as a person s self esteem, responsibility and having a purpose in life and encourage them to take on new challenges and develop new skills and can also learn to care for others.

2 First Trans Pennine Express staff, volunteers and BTP officers presenting Caring for Life with a cheque for 2,252 Ongoing Projects Caring For Life (CFL) have two supported homes. These homes provide long term support not short term solutions. he housing support team find suitable housing for homeless people. They also support people in independent accommodation, and help them tackle a wide range of problems. CFL have 109 acres of land, which is home to woodland sheep, long-horned cattle and free range hens! Service users are shown a number of skills, including how to raise bedding plants, growing them from seeds and cuttings. A dedicated group of volunteers help with adult literacy. They have helped people to read for the first time and helped others with their reading and writing skills. In the workshop people staying with CFL produce hand carved walking sticks and bird boxes which are sold in the farm shop. There is also an ongoing computing and media project involving people planning and producing literature about the farm and their own DVDs. People s hidden talents are also found by providing the opportunity to express themselves through various art and craft activities. The meat products on sale in the farm shop are produced from CFL s own livestock. The catering academy is where the chef trains young people basic cooking skills, food hygiene and health & safety skills. Caring for Life can be found at Crag House Farm, Otley Old Road, Cookridge, Leeds LS16 7NH. Tel

3 est briefings...latest briefings...latest briefings...latest briefings...latest briefings...latest briefings...lates Operation Night Owl Night Owl is a high-profile operation to tackle Anti Social Behaviour (ASB). Operation Night Owl is designed to support and complement our day-to-day policing. Our directed regular patrols make the transport network safer and reassuring passengers and rail staff that ASB won t be tolerated. Mike Greedy of consumer watchdog Passenger Focus said: Passengers tell us they generally feel safe on the railway, but having staff available definitely makes a difference - 40% of passengers wanted to see more staff on the train and 36% said they wanted more visible police on board. The British Transport Police s Operation Night Owl will be welcomed by passengers. Officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team carried out evening high-profile patrols of stations and trains to supplement the everyday service already provided. Strikes again! A man who was suspected of causing grievous bodily harm at Leeds station was identified at a recent meeting of the BACIL (Business Against Crime in Leeds) partnership. During January, a suspect was identified by a Morrison s Supermarket security guard. Acting on this information, BTP CID officers arrested a man who has since been charged with wounding at Leeds Magistrates Court. BACIL hold monthly briefings which are attended by Neighbourhood Policing Officers, retailers and other partners. The presentations highlight known offenders wanted in connection with crimes carried out in the city. Retailers (whether based on Leeds City Station, or in the City Centre) wishing to request more information, or to join BACIL can contact by calling or mob or by at bacil@westyorkshire.pnn.police.uk. Operation Garland During December, Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) officers were involved in Operation Garland which centred on highly-visible train and railway station patrols to prevent Anti-Social behaviour in the run up to the Christmas period. These were undertaken on board trains between Leeds and York; the Airedale and Wharfedale lines between Leeds, Shipley, Keighley and Bradford; and the First Trans Pennine Express route from York via Leeds to Dewsbury and Huddersfield. NPT catch prolific thieves NPT s PCs Dave Mitchell and Keith Warner successfully halted a three-man crime wave recently during a Northern Rail revenue protection exercise at Bradford s Forster Square railway station. On Tuesday 8 February they stopped three suspects and recovered a bag which contained a laptop computer and printer, portable hard drive and three satellite navigation systems, which were all found to be stolen. West Yorkshire Police were able to confirm that that the three males were prolific offenders targeting motor vehicles in the area. The three are currently on bail pending a charging decision. est briefings...latest briefings...latest briefings...latest briefings...latest briefings...latest briefings...lates

4 The New Boy at Newsam! The NPT has welcomed a new PCSO who will further strengthen the team and will help ensure that we are able to continue to provide the kind of first-class service which the local community deserves. PCSO Joel Varey is already developing contacts at Leeds Railway Station where he will have responsibility for organising community meetings, tackling crime and Trying to find long term solutions to problems including anti-social behaviour. He joins a well-established team of PCs and PCSOs covering the West Yorkshire area. One of Joel s first tasks was to attend a Fun Day at Leeds Temple Newsam Park to promote rail safety and offer crime prevention advice to young people. PCSO Varey said: It is very important to promote safety on the railways and one of the most effective ways to achieve this is to ensure that youngsters are involved and educated whilst still at a young age before they are open to negative influences from their surroundings and older peers. As part of the fun, the youngsters also took part in activities such as face painting and practical activities. 5 Working together - for a safer Dewsbury Sgt. Mark Burgess of the Neighbourhood Policing Team explains the aims of the operation to a station user January saw a joint Safety Arch operation with the NPT working alongside West Yorkshire Police and the UK Border Agency at Dewsbury railway station. The NPT also assisted West Yorkshire Police at Dewsbury Bus Station in a similar day of action, which saw a total of six people arrested for theft, public order and immigration offences. A further two people were given Cannabis Street Warnings after being found in possession of the controlled drug. Almost 900 people passed through the mobile metal detectors which as well as being used as a method of assisting officers in detecting knives, are also a deterrent to people carrying knives on public transport.
