13 Banda Newsletter Page 13 Riding for the Disabled Thank You Letter

14 Banda Newsletter Page Bago Bush Endurance Ride Firstly, I wish to thank the Port Macquarie & District 4WD Club for again helping the Wauchope/Port Macquarie Riding for the Disabled Centre at the 2016 Bago Bush Endurance Ride. The Bago Bush Endurance Ride is a sanctioned Charity event of ERANSW. This year s Endurance Ride was quite eventful for our club. We had the six vehicles with 10 members and two visitors on the pre-ride drive. We met at Timbertown at 9.00 and proceeded to drive around the 40km ride course. We had to negotiate trail 34/3, the one between Paddock Rd and the rear of the Sales Yards. The first creek crossing is now diverted due to its condition. John Livingston decided he wanted to negotiate the actual crossing until he stuck a stick into the water to check the depth and noticed it was covered in oil when he pulled the stick from the water. There are broken snatch straps, car parts, oil etc near the crossing from failed attempts. John followed the convoy via the by-pass. John checking the creek crossing Morning tea on Bago Bluff Odette s morning tea biscutes for all. We proceeded around the first part of the course without incident and had a quick morning tea up on Bago Bluff. Odette Bottle made some biscuits for the upcoming Club meeting on the following Monday but was a week out. We had many tasty treats as seen in the photo above. After morning tea we had a pleasurable drive until we come to a tree across on a trail heading to Pine Creek Road. One vehicle drove over the tree. Guess who tried and didn t make it yep, the adventurous John Livingston. John reckons he was in 2WD. Anyway, John s winch works well. The rest of the drive was without incident. We proceeded to the Bago Tavern and had an enjoyable lunch. Richard was so happy to eat out for a change that s the trouble having a wife who is a chef. This year our club helped with five checkpoints. Trudy and Steve were available for a short time Sunday morning so they kindly took the first check point at intersection of Bago Rd, Pine Creek Rd, Nine Trees Rd etc. The first riders flew past here about 3.20 Sunday morning. After the first leg riders past this checkpoint was finished so Steve joined Trudy and hit the swag. Heather and Ross were at checkpoint two which was on Nine Trees Road and they took over from Trudy and Steve for the second leg of the main ride and checked the other rides which passed their checkpoint. John and Leila were at checkpoint three. This was at the intersection of Pine Hut Road and Milligans Road. The riders had to ride down a very steep trail to this check point so Leila and John knew they were coming because of the yelling of the riders as they rode (slipped) down the slope. After the first leg had past Leila and John came into the base to help Tracey Vandenberg, who once again put her hand up to man the radio base. After the completion of the event Leila and John wished they had stayed home (only kidding). Tracey had them both running all day. Paul Weatherby was at his usual checkpoint on Boundary Road and Lemon Tree Road. Paul had an uneventful day and enjoyed his task.

15 Banda Newsletter Page 15 Then came checkpoint five. Poor Richard put his hand up for this one not knowing what he was in for. He was there with his daughter and one of her friends. A brief outline of Richards day was:- first leg 100km riders coming from the south, second leg of the 100km riders coming from the south, third leg of the 100km coming from the north then coming from the south after a turnaround just south of the checkpoint. The 40km riders came from the south. The 60km riders (40km ride then 20km ride) came from the south on their first leg then from the north on the second leg, down to the turn around and back from the south. Then the 20km came from the north, down to the turnaround and then from the south. I think Richard and the girls had 129 passes at their checkpoint. All the check point volunteers came to the base Saturday afternoon to collect the goodies for the bases and most stayed at the base and joined some of the RDA volunteers for dinner around the camp fire. It was a very enjoyable evening. Sunday around 12 the base received a call that a rider was off her horse and the horse had bolted up the road. I was responsible for the rescue of the riders and horses having the RDA horse float attached to my ute. I raced out to the pickup point where the Ride Secretary, Sean Pollard, had retrieved the rider and had commenced looking for the horse. We stayed out all afternoon but no trace of the horse. The following week saw many people out looking for the horse. We had members of our club out most days assisting in the search. The following Saturday night Dee & I received a call that the horse was found. We raced out, with the owners following, to retrieve the horse. He still had his saddle and bridle on. No damage to the saddle. The horse was slightly dehydrated and had mild Colic. On behalf of the Wauchope/Port Macquarie Riding for the Disabled Centre and Zone 6 of ERANSW (Dee & I are on the organising committee of the Bago Ride) we thank the members of the club for their continuing support of this event which is the RDA s biggest fundraising event annually. The club volunteers did receive a bottle of wine or two after the completion of the ride. We had a draw of all the volunteers who were involved in the event with Ross Pead and Paul Weatherly receiving a $25 voucher each from the Wauchope RSL to the Reflection s Restaurant. John, high and dry Richard and daughter with rescurers Safely found and going home Robert Pike Secretary, Wauchope/Port Macquarie Riding for the Disabled Centre Club member, Port Macquarie & District 4WD Club

Many thanks to everyone who came to lend a hand, and for providing chainsaws etc on the day. The showgrounds were super appreciative of the help, and couldn t believe the club could rustle up so many willing helpers. Great work everyone!!
