1 Website Iroquoia Winter Hikes 2012/2013 Iroquoia 2012/2013 Winter Hike Schedule Be sure to make a habit of checking out the Iroquoia Bruce Trail Club website for any information pertaining to corrections, missed or added hikes to the schedule as well as cancellations. WEEKLY HIKES HIKERS R US HIKES No need to curl up indoors in winter. Put on clothing suitable to the weather, proper hiking boots, bring along hiking sticks and ICERS and come enjoy the trails. You will Especially in winter, sometimes circumstances dictate that the hike be cancelled or changed. Also, please note that three of the hikes this session (Dec 17, Jan. 7 and Jan. 14 th ) will take place on MONDAYS. Details to follow for this hike. Leader: Errol Mackenzie, e.mackenzie@sympatico.ca Wed. Dec Blair Trail, Cambridge - +/-12 km. Meet for 8:45 am. start in the parking lot at Hwy. 6 just south of 401. We will carpool to the parking lot in Blair on George St. (Directions: Take 401 West to exit 278 for Regional Road 8 toward Cambridge. Turn left onto King St E. Turn right onto Fountain St. S (signs for Blair). At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Blair Rd/Morningside Dr/Regional Road 42. Continue for 4 km. and turn left onto George St.) We will hike along the Grand River and then into downtown Galt to a lovely little cafe near the Grand River for a bite to eat. Hiking boots, icers may be necessary, snack, sunscreen, water. Med - 3 Leader: Louise, llanglc401@rogers.com Mon. Dec Bronte Park, Oakville - +/- 3 hrs. Meet for a 9:00 am. exit in the vicinity of the Longo's Burloak Store, 3455 Wyecroft Road, Oakville. We will car pool to the Bronte Park which is a short drive from Longo's. This is a loop hike, easy with a few hills involved. A car admission fee applies to enter

2 Bronte Park. If anybody has a van, it would minimize the individual fee. Bring water, icers, sunscreen. Med - 2 Hike Leader: Mickey MacDonald, , mikmac@cogeco.ca Wed. Jan. 2 - Preston to Hespeler, There and Back Hike - +/- 16 km. Meet for 8:45 am exit in the parking lot at Hwy. 6, just south of 401. We will carpool to Riverside Park in Preston (49 King Street West (Preston) and park in the lower parking lot for Cambridge Surplus store. Directions: Drive from the parking lot on Hwy #6 west on Hwy # 401, exit at the Hespeler Rd interchange, (#282) go south to Eagle Dr and turn west to the parking spot on Eagle Dr (on the right). The parking lot is located just before Tim Horton's.We will hike from Preston to Hespeler along the Speed River, then back to Preston finishing with (optional) lunch at the City Cafe in Preston (or bring your own lunch). Water, icers, hiking boots. Med - 3. Leader: Louise, llanglc401@rogers.com Mon. Jan. 7 - Oakville, Loop Hike - +/- 3 1/2 hrs. Meet for a 9:00 am. exit at the Oakville Place, NE corner of parking lot (Sears store can be seen from our parking space). The hike will start from this parking space. Lunch can be purchased at Oakville Place after the hike or bring your own lunch and enjoy it at this Shopping Centre. Bring water, icers, sunscreen. Meet for a 9:00 am. exit at the corner of Upper Middle Road and Third Line, Oakville near the Williams Coffee outlet. All cars will be moved south about a minute drive away to the Recreation Centre on Third Line. A loop hike will start at the Recreation Centre. Jan Oakville Trails - +/- 3 1/2 hrs. Meet for a 9:00 am. exit in the northeast corner of Oakville Place. Walk the trails east of Trafalgar Rd. Return to Oakville Place for a late lunch. Leader: Charlotte Stewart stewch@mcmaster.ca Wed. Feb 6 - Glen Morris (In and Out) Hike km. Meet for 8:45 am. start in the parking lot at Hwy 6 just south of 401. We will carpool to the parking lot by the rail trail at the end of Forbes Street. Directions are as follows: Go West on 401 and take Exit 282 (Hespeler Rd S/Reg Road 24S) toward Brantford. Turn left onto Hespeler Road (24) and continue on 24 until the fork at Water St.N. Follow Water St. N. Continue onto Brantford Hwy to Reg.Road 14 (River Rd). Turn Right onto

Feb 13 Loop Hike in the Dundas Valley. Meet at second parking lot on Martin Road in Ancaster, just west of the Ancaster Community Centre on Jerseyville Road at 9 am. +/- 12 km. Leader: Charlotte Stewart stewch@mcmaster.ca Wed. Feb Toronto Cityscape - +/- 3 1/2 hrs. Meet for a 9:45 am. exit in the Great Hall of Union Station (west of the clock) for a tour of art in public places. Bring or buy your lunch. Bring water and sunscreen. Meet for 8:45 am. start at Kerncliffe Park (east parking lot). Keep in mind that Kerns Rd. is now one way north of the park so you will need to enter off Brant Street or North Service Rd. We will hike to Grindstone Creek and back. Bring a lunch, plenty of water, sunscreen and icers. Med - 3. Meet Larry Allison, at the rear parking lot at Kilbride School. We will hike out to the Calcium Pits and back. Mod - 2. Wed. Dec Sanctuary Park - 10 km. Meet Mary Rose at Sanctuary Park off Robin Hood Drive in Dundas. We will hike to the Dundas Valley Train Station, then on to Heritage Falls and back. Mod - 4. Wed. Dec.19 - Central Library/Beachway Park - 10 km. Meet Judy Bourke, at Burlington Central Library rear parking for a hike along the pathways and then along the Beach and back. Optional lunch at Burlington Tourist Office after. Mod - 2. Wed. Dec Websters Falls. - 8 km.

4 Meet Elizabeth Gregory, in the school parking lot on Harvest Road, Greensville.We will hike out to the Dundas Peak and back. Mod - 4. Wed. Jan. 2 - Hamilton Bayfront - 10 km. Meet Stella Parr at the Bayfront Parking lot in Hamilton. We will hike along the Waterfront trail and back. There should be many Wildfowl wintering over. Mod - 2. Wed. Jan. 9 - Beachway Park/Lighthouse - 8 km. Meet Kathy Downey at the Beachway Park Concession on Lakeshore. We will hike out to the lighthouse and then back to the New Pier and then on to the Burlington Art Centre Pay what you Can Café. We will then look at the work of Reinhard Reizenstein;"photographs and sculptures that take us from looking at the landscape to macro images of moss to acrylic assumptions about the atomic world". Mod - 2. Wed. Jan.16 - Lasalle Park - 7 km. Meet Elizabeth Gregory at the Geraldo Parking lot at LaSalle Park. Bring your camera. We will complete a circular hike of this wonderful area and meet the many Trumpeter Swans that winter over on the beach. Timmy`s after if you like. Mod - 4. Wed. Jan Hidden Valley - 8 km. Meet Emilie Prue at the parking lot for Hidden Valley, off Plains Road in Aldershot. We will complete a circular hike of this beautiful area. Mod - 3. Wed. Jan Canal Hike - 11 km. Meet Margaret Broxholme at the east parking lot for Hutch`s Restaurant at Van Waggoners Beach in Hamilton.We will walk out to the canal and back. Bring your camera. Hundreds of Stifftail Ducks should be wintering over at the Canal. Optional lunch after. Mod - 2. Wed. Feb. 6 - Soup Hike - 8 km. Join Terry Rose for this annual hike. Meet at Bayfront Park in Hamilton at 10:00 am. We will hike along the harbour wall to the canal, around to Princess Point and on to the Hamilton Convention Centre. For $12 (seniors $10) you get to select four delicious cups of soup from the best restaurants in the area (bread included). The proceeds go to Living Rock Ministries, an NGO that does great work with troubled youth in Hamilton. Entertainment, door prizes and plenty of sporting and media celebrities on hand. After lunch return to Bayfront Park at your leisure. Leader: Terry Rose [FYI, in previous years Soupfest was held on a Tuesday] Wed. Feb.13 - Kerncliff /Great Falls - 8km. Meet Larry Allison at the Kerncliff Park parking lot on Kerns Rd. for a circular hike to Smokey Hollow. Mod - 4.

5 Wed. Feb Cootes Paradise - 8 km. Meet Bill Mcguire at the Royal Botanical parking lot on York Rd for a circular hike of the North shore trails. There maybe Swans. A very interesting area. Med - 4. Wed. Feb.27 - Hilton Falls - 10 km. Meet John Wolkowski at the parking lot on Sideroad 4(Nassagawya).Take Guelph Line to Sideroad 10 (1.5 k,north of the 401 Hwy.) Sideroad 10, becomes Sideroad 4.The parking lot is.5 km. past the bend, on the right. We will hike into Hilton Falls and back. Mod - 2. MIDWEEK THURSDAY HIKES Rather than hibernate this winter, let s get out and hike with friends. Dress in layers, bring icers along just in case and don t forget the sunscreen! Bring lunch, water and snack. All hikes are at a moderate pace with the likelihood of hills and rocky footing. No dogs, please. In the event of inclement weather be sure to call the hike leader. Also, if you would like to make carpool arrangements the hike leader may be able to help you with that. And looking ahead. Meet for a 10:00 am. exit in car park at intersection of York Road and Valley Road in Dundas (map 8). We will car pool to Websters Falls and hike back. Bring icers, water and snack. Pace: moderate. Terrain: 4. Leader: Terry Rose. (905) Thurs. Dec Halton Agreement Forest - Approx. 14 km. Meet in the small Halton Agreement Forest parking lot on Guelph Line, north of Hwy. 401, on the east side, across from the Mohawk Raceway. Be careful, it s easy to miss. Mod - 2/3. (New meeting place) Meet for a 10:00 am. start in Brantford. From Hamil- ton take the 403 west to Oak Park Rd, (4th exit). Turn LEFT onto Oak Park Road. Follow Oak Park road to second set of lights. Turn right onto Kraemer s Way and follow to end and park on side of road. Hike the Grand Valley, Trans Canada and Blue Heron Trails. (shorter version) Hiking boots. Bring a lunch, snackand water. 6 Thurs. Dec 27 - Mountain and Mansions - 9 km. Meet for 10:00 am. start at Chedoke Golf Club (Hamilton) parking lot. Loop hike involving the rail trail, the Bruce Trail, and back through Hamilton s tony undermount neighbourhoods you didn t know existed. See the site of the famous Mountain View Hotel ( ) and remnants of the James Street incline railway ( ). Hiking boots, icers? snack and water. Mod - 2. Optional lunch stop afterward on Locke Street. Leader: Janina Vanderpost (jmvanderpost@sympatico.ca). Thurs., Jan. 3 - Winter Wonderland with the Eagles in Brantford - 3/4 hrs. Meet for a 10:00 am. exit at Glenhurst Gardens on 20 Ava Rd. in Brantford. Take the 403 to Brantford Exit at Paris Rd. Turn left onto the Paris Rd, At the stoplights turn right onto Hardy Rd. Cross the railway tracks and turn left onto Ava Rd. and proceed to Glenhurst Gardens at 20 Ava Rd. Bring a snack and lunch, icers and sunscreen. Mod. - 2 Leader: Lorraine Sherred. Please 1looney@sympatico.ca Thurs. Jan Rattlesnake Point Loop - 8/10 km. Meet for a 10:00 am. start in the upper parking lot of Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area on Appleby Line, north of Derry Rd. We will do a loop hike of the Conservation Area trails. (8 km.) If there is not too much snow we will go to the Interpretive Centre at Crawford Lake as well.(10 km.) Mod - 5. Map 11. Meet for a 10:00 am. exit in car park at intersection o.f Old Mud Street and Pritchard Road (Hamilton, East Mountain). We will do a loop hike along the Red Hill Creek, Greenhill Ave. and Mountain Brow. Could be shortened if conditions are poor. Bring icers, water and snack. Pace: moderate. Terrain: 4.Leader: Terry Rose. (905) Thurs., Jan Dundas - +/- 8 km. Meet for a 10:00 am. exit at the Dundas Driving Park in the east parking lot area. Length and direction of hike will depend upon the weather but we will aim for approx. 8 km. Hiking boots. Bring snacks, icers, and sunscreen. Hiking sticks recommended. No dogs. Mod -4. Leader: Marion Fletcher Thurs. Jan 31 - GO to GO Port Credit to Long Branch GO Stn. - +/-10 km. Meet at Port Credit GO station, hike to Long Branch GO station through the Adamson Estate and along the Waterfront Trail. Feb. 7 - Cootes South to Dundas hours Meet for 10:00 am. start in the parking lot of Canadian Tire at the corner of Cootes Drive and Dundas Street in Dundas. We will carpool to Coronation Park/Coronation Arena

We will hike along the south shore of Cootes Paradise, including Sassafras Point, to McMaster campus where we will stop briefly at the students centre for a warm-up and refreshment break (there s a Timmies) before continuing on to Dundas along Spencer Creek. Happy Valentine's Day!!! Meet for a 10:05 am. start at Loyola House parking lot, St. Ignatius College, 5420 Hwy. 6 North (just north of Woodlawn),Guelph. For those who wish to carpool, meet at 9:30 a.m. in the commuter parking lot on Hwy 6 just south of Hwy We will walk through fields and along the Speed River. Meet for a 10:00 am. start on the west side of the LCBO on the northeast corner of Upper Middle Rd. and Eighth Line in Oakville.
