1 Friday October 3 Lower Javelina Trail - Level D. about 3 miles, less than 500 Hike Contact: Joel Tormoen joeltormoen@gmail.com Depart WB trailhead 8:00 am - return before 11:00 am This quite easy hike will give folks a chance to get re-acquainted with our local trails. We ll most likely go via the Lower Javelina west side, then either cross over and finish on the east side... or simply return via the Wild Burro Trail. Bring water and snacks. Tuesday, October 7 Catalina Mountains Marshall Gulch Mint Spring Pizza Hike Level C, 3 miles, about 1000 ft Elevations Gain Hike Contact: Jim Phillips, jphil514@earthlink.net (520) Depart DM Park 7:30 AM, Return 3:00 PM This is a third try for this hike, although it's a modified version. We'll go up the Marshall Gulch Trail and then take the Mint Spring Trail to the TH. Maybe the Aspens will be in color. We'll still end the hike with pizza. We'll have to drop a care at the Mint Spring TH prior to the hike. We probably won't have to worry about rain this time, but who knows. Jut come well prepared for whatever weather comes

Thursday, October 9 Santa Rita Mountains Baldy Crest Four Springs Trail Loop Level A++, 10.5 miles, with a total elevation gain of 4250 Hike Contact: Gary Borax gcborax@yahoo.com Depart DM Park at 7:00am - Return 5:00pm to 6:00pm We will hike 4.1 miles with a 3330 elevation gain from Baldy/Supertrail Trail Head (TH) in Madera Canyon to Baldy Saddle. Baldys Saddle is one of the two major connecting Saddles, where all the trails merge at the upper elevations in the Santa Rita s. In addition to the final climb to Mount Wrightson (Mount Baldy), the Baldy Trail, south end of the Crest Trail and the Supertrail all converge on Baldy Saddle. The Gardner Canyon Trail is close to Baldy Saddle. We will hike 2.2 miles with a 550 elevation gain on the Crest Trail to a trail that cuts off to Armour Spring and the Four Springs Trail. The last time I hiked the Crest Trail was in November 2012 and the trail was barely visible because of the spectacular growth of wild flowers that were 2 to 3 feet high. The Crest Trail pretty much follows the east side of the ridge between Baldy and Florida Saddles. Therefore, the spectacular views are to the east. The other major connecting Saddle in the Santa Rita s is Florida Saddle located at the north end of the Crest Trail. In addition to the Crest Trail, the Cave Creek Trail, Florida Trail and the Sawmill Trail all converge on Florida Saddle. The Four Spring / Armour Spring Cutoff Trail is close to Florida Saddle We will hike the Cutoff Trail (Crest to Four Springs Trail).5 miles with a 160 elevation gain. We will then hike down the Four Springs Trail 1.7 miles descending 1300 down to a point above Rogers Rock. As the Four Springs Trail descends its spectacular views are to the west. We will bushwhack.4 miles descending 550 down to Rogers Rock. We will then hike our usually series of trails and routes 1.6 miles descending 1060 down from Rogers Rock back to the TH. 3 Depart from the WB Trail Head at 7:00am Return at 12:00pm We will be driving vehicles into Wild Burro Canyon and parking at the State Land Boundary. We will hike up the Alamo Spring Trail for 3 to 4 hours filling in small trenches, raking, trimming, building cairns and setting rocks to define the trail where needed. We will then return back to our vehicles. Bring snacks and plenty of water. Tuesday, October 14 Wild Burro Canyon Alamo Spring Trail Volunteer Work Hike Level C Work Hike, 5+ miles, 1000 Elevation Gain Depart from the WB Trail Head at 7:00am Return at 12:00pm We will be driving vehicles into Wild Burro Canyon and parking at the Old Stone Line Shack. We will either hike up the Wild Burro Trail or the Alamo Spur to the Alamo Spring Trail. We will work for 3 to 4 hours filling in small trenches, raking, trimming, building cairns and setting rocks to define the trail where needed. We will then return back to our vehicles. Bring snacks and plenty of water. Thursday October 16 Catalina Mountains Bag a Peak or hike a Ridge that we can see from the Catalina Highway Level Adventure Hike 4+ miles, Depart: 7am Return about 3:00pm As you drive up and down the Catalina Highway, you get many great views of nearby Peaks, Ridges and Saddles. Tentatively I m considering hiking the Ridge that breaks off from the high point of the Bugs Spring Trail Car Pool Fee is $5.00 and bring your own lunch snacks and water. Saturday October 18 Upper Javelina Trail - Level C. about 4 miles, less than 700 Hike Contact: Joel Tormoen joeltormoen@gmail.com Depart WB trailhead 8:00 am - return before noon

4 If we get enough hikers, we will leave a car at the trailhead and drive around to the parking lot by Caytons. From there we will hike up the Upper Javelina as it rises slowly offering great views of the golf course and Dove Mountain. When we start down toward the hotel from the junction with the Wild Mustang trail, we can decide to either hike down the spur or take the mile longer route behind the hotel offering views of the pool area and patio. Should be back for lunch. Bring water and snacks. Tuesday, October 21 Wild Burro Canyon Alamo Spring Trail Volunteer Work Hike Level C Work Hike, 4+ miles, 1200 Elevation Gain Depart from the WB Trail Head at 7:00am Return at 12:00pm We will be driving vehicles into Wild Burro Canyon and parking at the State Land Boundary. Thursday October 23 Catalina Mountains Prison Camp to Sycamore Reservoir Level C+, 4.6 miles RT, 1100 accumulated elevation gain Hike Contact: Ray Kuhn ray.e.@gmail.com Depart 7:00 AM Return 3:00 PM We will travel to the eastern slopes of the Catalina Mountains where a prison camp was located which housed the unfortunate souls who constructed much of the Catalina Highway. From the prison camp, we ll hike down the Sycamore Reservoir Trail to the Sycamore Reservoir at the junction of Bear Canyon. We can rest at the dam and explore the surrounding area before heading uphill back to the prison site. Car Pool Fee is $5.00 and bring your own lunch snacks and water. Monday October 27th through Friday October 31 st Galiuro Mountains Key Swap in Aravaipa Canyon This is a 12 mile hike, 50% of the time hiking through Aravaipa Creek from the East Side of Aravaipa Canyon to the West Side or vica-versa. Each group will be spending two nights in the Aravaipa Conservancy Lodge on the East Side of the Canyon. 5 Hike Contact: Joel Tormoen Depart DM Park 7:45 am - return 3:30 pm This will be a joint hike with the folks from Sunflower. Current plans have us driving to Summerhaven, stopping briefly at the visitor center (restrooms). Then we will park near the Iron Door restaurant by the ski hill and hike up and back on the trail. This trail runs just east of the ski area with giant switchbacks going up to the ridge above... the top of the ski lift. Given it will be fall we should benefit from great fall colors. Many aspens and some maples. We will lunch either at the Iron Door (great German food and more) or the Cookie Cabin for pizza. NOTE: someone else needs to be able to drive. I don t do well on the Catalina Hiway when behind the wheel. Carpool fee $5. Bring water and snacks. Additional Hiking Opportunities (Dove Mountain Hikers collaborate with both the City of Marana Outdoor Recreation Programs and the Sunflower Hiking Club. Links to their respective sites for hike schedules and registration are provided below for your convenience: City of Marana (register online) Wear suitable hiking boots, bring a snack, lunch and a minimum of 3 liters of water per person. There are no restroom or water stations on the trail. Sunscreen, hat and walking sticks are suggested. No pets. Hikers under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the Wild Burro Trailhead at the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain (14810 North Secret Springs Drive) Extended distance hikes are lead every other Wednesday. October hikes are listed below: October 1 Cochie Trail (Approximately 11 miles and elevation gains of 610 ft. October 15 Wild Mustang Trail (Approximately 12.8 miles and elevation gains of 1060 ft. And every second (2 nd ) Saturday of each month, please check the website above for further information.
