1 Iroquoia Winter Hikes 2013/2014 Feature Weekly Walk This is a new walk which was introduced in the Fall, but didn t make it into the newsletter. It would be appealing to hikers living in Hamilton. Try it out. EVERY WEDNESDAY EVENING - HAMILTON BAYFRONT PARK (off of Bay Street N.) 2 hrs. Meet for 7:00 pm. (start) in parking lot at Flagpole (South of Boat Launch dock) at the start of the trail, for a brisk walk along the Bayfront, to the canal and back. Hike cancelled in poor weather. Moderate - Flat, easy terrain. Leader: Carol Butterworth. For information call Carol at or security_2008@hotmail.com WEEKLY WALKS EVERY MONDAY NIGHT CULHAM TRAIL MISSISSAUGA hrs Moderate to fast pace. Meet at Riverwood Visual Arts Centre in Mississauga. The centre is located just north of Burnhamthorpe Rd. between Mississauga Rd and Creditview Rd on Riverwood Park Lane. We will meet at 6:00 pm. in the parking lot at the top of the hill and hike along the Culham trail. Hike is cancelled if there is heavy rain. Leader: Nancy Stevens nancystevens7@gmail.com EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT (Except Dec. 25 & Jan. 1) - Walk for Health and Fun (1.5hrs at a Medium to Fast Pace) Climb the steps and walk the streets and trails of West Hamilton. Meet at 7:10 pm. at the corner of Mohawk and Upper Paradise in the Westcliffe Mall parking lot (near Food Basics). Come along for a brisk, aerobic walk. During the winter, we hike the streets and the lit rail trail as well as going up the stairs once. (Which are also lit.) Hike is cancelled if there is heavy rain or heavy snow. We still do hike in the cold though (wear your thermal underwear!) No hikes on Dec. 25 & Jan. 1 due to Christmas and New Years. Sometimes uneven terrain, hike routes to be varied. Optional pub stop after hike. Dec Christmas Light Walk - Burlington 1.5 hrs Meet at 7:00 pm. at Eastway Plaza at the corner of Walkers Line and New St. for a Christmas Light walk around the streets of Burlington. 3 Sat. Dec Toronto Section, Scotsdale Farm km. Depart 9:30 am. Map 13 Km Scotsdale Farm north of Km Enter off Trafalgar Rd. Loop hike on the Main trail, Great Esker and Bennett Side trails. Med 4.5. Difficult, variable and challenging. No dropout, no dogs. Pub stop. Leader: Ron Granger (519) pm. Francis Han (905) Sat. Dec Hockley Valley, Caledon Hills Section - approx. 3 hrs. Trail map 18, starting at 10:00 am. Take Highway 10 north from Orangeville, turn right onto Hockley Road (County Road 7), and follow to 3rd Line E.H.S., turn left and proceed for one kilometre to roadside parking on right hand side of the road. GPS co-ordinates:- N , W This is an opportunity to get away from the insanity of the malls in this holiday season, for a quiet walk in the woods. We will hike at a moderate pace on the Isobel East, Tom East, and Glen Cross side trails, linked together with sections of the Main Trail. Dress in appropriate clothing for whatever Mother Nature has in store for us, and bring your ice footwear if necessary. Bring something to drink, and a snack for lunch. Meet for a 10:00 am. exit in the Upper Parking lot of Crawford Lake C/A. on the east side of Guelph Line, north of Derry Rd. We will hike around the rare merimictic lake boardwalk, the Pine Ridge trail and then out to the lookout and back. Those who wish can visit the Iroquoian longhouses. Bring water, snack, sunscreen and definitely Icers. C/A fee applies or bring your membership pass. Optional refreshment stop afterwards for those who wish. Easy pace. Mod 1. Meet for a 10:00 am. start in the parking lot of Hilton Falls Conservation Area on #5 Sideroad (also known as Campbellville Rd. and Regional Rd. 9), between Guelph Line and Highway 25, north of Highway 401. Map 11. We will hike the lovely trails of this area, visiting the waterfalls. Mod - 3/4. Bring a lunch, water and icers. Conservation Area pass or parking fee in effect. Meet at 7:00 pm. in front of Target at the Millcroft Shopping Centre at Appleby & Upper Middle for a Christmas Light walk around the streets of the Orchard Neighbourhood in North Burlington. Of course, we will spend some time at the huge display on Blue Spruce Ave, which is synchronized to music! Optional Tim s or Pub stop after the hike. Moderate 2. We will be hiking a loop using the Al Shaw Side Trail and Hilton Falls Side Trail. Bring water and a snack, and dress for the weather. You may want icers or poles to help with footing. Wed. Jan. 1 - Hilton Falls Conservation Area, Toronto Section - 3 hrs (approx). A loop hike for New Year s Day, starting at 11:00 am. Trail map 11, meet in the parking lot at the Conservation Area. GPS co-ordinates:- N ', W '. Note that an entry fee will be required by Conservation Halton. An opportunity to keep that New Year s resolution to get more exercise and walk off some of the excess of the night before. Wear hiking boots, and dress appropriately for whatever Mother Nature has in store for us at this time of year. Bring ice footwear, a snack lunch (turkey leftovers optional) and something to drink. Dogs permitted, but must be leashed, and owners scoop the poop. After the hike those who want to can repair to Canada s coffee shop for some hot beverages (we will have earned it). Jan Boyne Valley, Dufferin Highlands Section - 3 hrs (approx). Trail map 20. Meet at 10:00 am., roadside parking on the right side of County Road 19, one kilometre north of Highway 89 where the Primrose Loop Side Trail crosses the road, GPS co-ordinates:- N , W A double-loop hike that will take in the Boyne Valley Side Trail and the Primrose Side Trail, along with the stretch of the Main Trail through Murphy s Pinnacle. Wear hiking boots and dress in appropriate clothing for whatever Mother Nature has in store for us at this time of year. Depending on the snow coverage we shall hike or use snowshoes. We will hike at a moderate pace on sections of the main and the Crawford Lake, Leech Porter, and Canyon Bypass side trails. 7 Sun. Jan Loweville Winter Carnival - 7 km. Meet for a 10:00 am. start in the parking lot in Loweville, off of Guelph Line. (Look for the Loweville Bistro across the road.) We will hike the River and Ruin trail and then join the carnival in Loweville Park. Mod - 2/3. Leader: Brian and Kathy Gilmore Tues., Jan SOUPFEST HIKE Join Valerie Dobson for this annual hike. Meet at Bayfront Park in Hamilton at 10:00 am. We will hike along the harbour wall to the canal, around to Princess Point and on to the Hamilton Convention Centre. For $12 (seniors $10) you get to select four delicious cups of soup from the best restaurants in the area (bread included). The proceeds go to Living Rock Ministries, an NGO that does great work with troubled youth in Hamilton. Entertainment, door prizes and plenty of sporting and media celebrities on hand. Come and enjoy a hike at a moderate pace, where we will hike sections of the Hilton Falls Side Trail, and the Vanderleck Side Trail linked together by sections of the Main Trail. 9 REBEL HIKERS - 7:00 PM. TUESDAYS YEAR ROUND We invite you to join us for hr. weekly walks. Hiking boots and a flashlight are always recommended. The speed and the terrain vary, as do the meeting points which float around Hamilton, Greensville, Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek, Waterdown, Binbrook, Grimsby, and Burlington. An optional social hour at a nearby pub concludes each hike. Dec. 3 Meet at the front door of the Corktown Tavern a the corner of Young and Ferguson in central Hamilton for a there-and-back walk along the Escarpment Rail Trail. Parking is available on Forest (one street north of St. Joseph Hospital) or Ferguson and both can be accessed by taking Forest (one-way) east from John St. After, we ll head to the Corktown Tavern to hear our fellow hiker, Ruth H., do her Celtic thing on the fiddle. Jan. 14 Meet in the parking lot of Valley Park Community Centre on Paramount Dr. in upper Stoney Creek for a loop hike on the escarpment lands. The community centre is just south of the intersection of Mud St. and Paramount. Enter the parking lot by the driveway
10 closest to the building and turn left down the first row of cars. You ll find me at the end of the row. Pub stop will be at the Brown Barrel on Upper Ottawa. A Winter s Tale # 6 - Tues. Jan. 21 Meet in the parking lot of the RBG on Plains Rd. W. in Burlington. We park in the part of the lot closest to the street behind the RBG. Our loop hike will take us through a part of Grindstone Creek Valley and nearby green spaces. Our pub stop location is a mystery, even to me. A Winter s Tale # 7 - Tues. Jan. 28 Meet on Upper Lion s Club Rd. at the corner of Old Dundas Rd. in Ancaster for a loop walk on woodland trails. (See Km 46.1 of Map 8 in Edition 27 of The Bruce Trail Reference.) We ll do pub stop at the Coach and Lantern in Ancaster. A Winter s Tale # 8 - Tues. Feb. 4 Meet in the parking lot at the entrance to Binbrook Conservation Area. Take Hwy. 56 south from Rymal Rd. in Hamilton to reach Binbrook. Continue south for another 2 km. from the traffic light in the village until you reach Kirk Rd. Turn right.on Kirk Rd. and go about 2 km. to Harrison Rd. Turn left onto Harrison and go about 1 km to the entrance of Binbrook Conservation Area on your right. We ll hike various trails of the park and follow up with a pub stop at the Bin in Binbrook. A Winter s Tale # 9, - Tues. Feb. 11- Meet in the parking lot of Food Town at the corner of Mount Albion Rd. and Greenhill Ave. in lower east Hamilton. You ll find us in the area of the parking lot on the east side of the building facing Mount Albion. We ll do a loop walk in the grounds of area golf courses and follow up with a pub stop at Rankins on Main St. E. A Winter s Tale # 10 - Tues. Feb. 18 Meet in the Metro parking lot on Governor s Rd., one block west of the corner of Osler Dr. and Governor s Rd. in Dundas for a loop walk in Dundas Valley. After, we ll do pub stop at the Winchester Arms on King St. in Dundas. A Winter s Tale # 11 - Tues. Feb. 25- Meet in the parking lot under the hydro towers at the west end of Scenic Drive on Hamilton s west mountain. This parking lot is located at the edge of the escarpment where the Chedoke Radial Trail reaches the top of the escarpment. It is also next to the east entrance to Iroquoia Heights Conservation Area. (See Km 40.6 of Map 8 in Edition 27 of The Bruce Trail Reference.) We ll do pub stop at Montana s among the Meadowland s box stores. 11 Number There is no need to register ahead of time; just show up. All hikes will be one to one and a half hours long. Tues. Dec. 3, Christmas Lunch and Hike (Everyone is welcome) Al and Barb Hutchison would like to invite all Bruce Trail hikers and anyone that hiked with the slowpokes to come to a Christmas lunch and hike. The hike will start at Shell Park on the Lakeshore Rd. east of Burloak Drive in Oakville at 10:00 am. The hike is an hour and a half. The lunch will be at Tuckers Market Place on the South service road near Guelph Line in Burlington at 12:00 noon. We have reserved a room for the group and you must call Barb to register by November 26th so Barb can confirm the numbers. This will be a great opportunity to mix and mingle with old friends. The hike will be on some trails, some street walking and some by the lake. In case of bad weather we will still have the lunch. Tues. Jan River and Ruin Side Trail. Meet at Blind Line and Britannia Road (Km. 95.5) West of Guelph Line in Loweville. Lunch at the Lowville Bistro. Tues. Feb Bayfront Trail Hamilton Meet at the entrance to the Bayfront Trail (West side of the Bayfront Park, Hamilton) for a walk to Princess Point and back. Lunch at Fishers Pier 4 Pub and Grub.
