1 ***For What It s Worth*** Janice Nelson, Editor May 12th, 2017 Editor s Comment Lots going on around the community, so I will get right into it. First, Community Pride Day has been cancelled for Saturday, May 13th, due to inclement weather in the forecast. A rain date TBD. A Mother s Day buffet will be held on Sunday in the Evergreene Dining Room. See the buffet menu at the end of this newsletter for the scrumptious details. We have a Juliet s Luncheon scheduled for Tuesday, May 23rd, and a Margarita Scramble coming up quickly on Thursday, June 8th! The Recreation Committee has a schedule of events for you to read. If you ever wanted to play Bocce Ball, then come to a Bocce Ball Clinic on Tuesday, May 16th, down at the Bocce Ball Court near the Mini Golf Course and give it a try! This is just a sampling of activities that your committee and staff members are planning for your enjoyment. I hope you come out and participate. Enjoy your weekend and Happy Mother s Day! See you around the Lake! BTW, wishing Linette a Happy Birthday on May 13th! The next FWIW will be issued on Friday, May 26th. Please all articles to me, Janice Nelson, at mamaj11@yahoo.com. Only use the FWIW box on the lobby counter. MAY CELEBRATIONS Happy Belated Birthday to Concetta Sipes who celebrated her day on May 4th. Here s wishing Len Sipes a very Happy Birthday on the 16th and Kathy Berry on the 23rd. Bob Caudry celebrates his special day on the 26th. And when you see Marilyn Sedlack and Nancy Gardner, wish them a Happy Birthday on the 27th. Congratulations to you all! HAPPENINGS AROUND THE LAKE & NEARBY ALPINE LADIES LUNCHEON by Barb Conway In appreciation of a wonderful afternoon, filled with conversation and congeniality, my sincere thanks to everyone: management, restaurant staff, raffle prize contributors, event organizers. Also, thanks to all who attended, without your support (physical and financial) the Luncheon would eventually become something "we used to do." JULIETS LUNCHEON by Trish Birch The next Juliets Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd, at The Tea Shoppe, Seneca Center in Morgantown. Please plan on meeting at the Lodge Parking Lot at 10:30am, if you wish to carpool. Otherwise, arrive at the Tea Shoppe at 11:30am for lunch. Please call Trish at (434) ASAP so she can reserve a place for you. Also, a sign-up sheet will soon be available at the Lodge for your convenience if you do not wish to call Trish. 1

2 MARGARITA SCRAMBLE LADIES, COME ONE, COME ALL! by Beverly Serpone Ladies, you are all invited to join us for the MARGARITA SCRAMBLE on Thursday, June 8 (10am tee off), at the Alpine Lake Golf Course ($15 for golf). You will be partnered with one of the Alpine Lake Ladies Golf Organization (ALLGO) members to play nine-holes of par-three golf. It is a scramble which means you and your partner will hit from the best ball that either of you hit at any time. So you hit your ball three yards and your partner hits her ball 100 yards, no problem, pick up your ball and hit from the best ball. It is a no-stress, fun couple of hours on the course. After the game we will all travel to the Boathouse for a free Margarita Meal with all of the fixin s, along with a steady supply of Margaritas! (Tickets will be sold for cash prizes to cover the cost of expenses.) Don t have a partner, no problem, call the Pro-Shop (304) and get your name on the list; you will be paired with someone. And to ALLGO members: Call, coerce, twist arms and get your friends to join us for a morning of golf and friendship. New/never-golfed-before-ladies..you never know, you may decide to join the ALLGO members who play only three, six, or nine holes of golf on Thursdays. The goal is to encourage you to consider getting out into the fresh air, get some exercise, make some new friends and GIVE GOLF A CHANCE. A NEW DOG PARK FOR ALPINE LAKE WE HOPE! by Beverly Serpone & Clark Sharpless The Board has given permission for a new location for the already approved ALPINE LAKE DOG PARK. The original location, on Baneberry Court, has been changed. It will now be located in the field above and slightly to the right of the Boathouse parking lots. The site is not visible from the tennis courts, nor will the dog park impact any houses or building lots around the area. The dog park will be 100 x 70 surrounded by a four foot fence. The length of the park will be divided into two separate areas: For small dogs of 30 pounds or less (100 x 30 ) and large dogs (100 x 40 ). Because of the cost, water will not be provided at the park. Signage will advise dog owners to provide their own water and bowl, along with specific dog park rules. We believe that this new Alpine Lake amenity will be a welcome addition to home owners, guests and renters and will provide one more reason for potential property owners to consider Alpine Lake in their future plans. We will need your help in moving forward with this project since the completion of the dog park is totally dependent on YOU. The entire project, from construction to maintenance costs, will require money donations and volunteer hours in order to get this done. The estimated cost of building the park will be approximately $1000 using less expensive materials (4 x 4 treated lumber, metal garden posts, galvanized mesh fencing). The total cost of construction with upgraded materials (metal fence posts, chain link fence) will be approximately $1600. The quality of construction will depend on the generosity of your donations. Your donations are needed to begin this project AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Give your dogs a chance to run like the wind, they will be healthier and happier. Please take your generous checks to the Lodge, made out to ALPOA, memo: Dog Park or mail your check to Alpine Lake Resort, Terra Alta, WV Please bserpone@aol.com or call (304) to volunteer your time and effort. We will be very happy to put your name on the list to make this dog park a new and rewarding amenity for the people and dogs of Alpine Lake. Thank you! 2

3 MEMORIAL CELEBRATION WITH FRIENDS & FAMILY OF FRANK BUCZEK The memorial celebration date is Saturday, July 1st, at noon at the Boathouse. Light lunch to follow. Please RSVP no later than June 10th. We will set the schedule for lifelong learning opportunities to include music, arts, field trips, lectures and workshops. If you would like to be a part of this committee, please join us on May 23rd. Our main goal is to make Terra Alta a better place to live. If you would care to join us in our endeavors, and would like to know more about what we do, please join us on the third Monday of each month at the T.A. Ambulance building at 7pm. We do not meet in January, February or March. We need YOU!!! Call Charlotte Wiles for more information, (304) WALL OF HONOR UPDATE by Sheila Amato The Alpine Lake Wall of Honor was created last year to honor those members who have lived/live in Alpine Lake (living or deceased) who served our country in the military. I originally hoped to find veterans, and was delighted to discover that we have more than 70 individuals who have earned a place on this wall. There are presently 56 identified photos displayed, and a handful of individuals have told me that they will gather this information (photo - either military or civilian - branch of service, dates served, and highest rank) and get them to me. However, I have been unsuccessful in connecting with the following folks (I've tried phone, and letter) so if you know how to reach them (or members of their family), please do so and ask them to contact me if they wish to be included in this Wall of Honor. A dedication ceremony will be held later this spring. Many thanks! Albert Potter Robert Thoms Ben Dobeck Mac Dobeck Bill and Ellen Weltman Wolf Stronzik Jim Wilson Robert Dunbar INFORMATION COMMITTEE by Charlotte Wiles Notify Nina Sheets at or vjs_njs3179@frontier.com, if you have any changes to your address, telephone, cellphone, or address. Looking for homes to open to the public to see the many ways to enjoy Alpine. Big, small, square, round it doesn't matter. Share your lifestyle at the Lake for one afternoon. Contact Joyce Wachter for more information (240) or joyceann.wachter@gmail.com. Raffles and light refreshments will be provided at the Boathouse. REMINDER: TERRA ALTA FOOD BANK There is an ongoing need to replenish supplies at our local food bank so please add your donations to help this worthy cause. 5 MOSQUITOES by John Laing Warmer weather will bring mosquitoes. Only the females bite and they use the blood to provide protein for their eggs, which they deposit on still, stagnant water. You can help keep the mosquito population down by eliminating still, stagnant water. This could include drip pans under plants and bird baths, which should be checked every week and emptied if there are "wrigglers" present. Other common egg laying sites are old tires, empty cans, and the like; which, hopefully, we do not have at Alpine Lake. If you have a plant pot with the water reservoir underneath that is accessible, you can spray a little insecticide into it every week or so. You can also check to insure there are no water pools in the ditches, etc. near your house. Interrupting the mosquito life cycle early in the season can have a big impact on the number of mosquitoes later in the year. ALPUC NEWS by Kim Mayne, General Manager Included with your April billing was your invitation and absentee ballot for the ALPUC Annual Meeting. In June, the terms of two Board Members, Jim Wachter and Boris Nazaroff expire. Both Jim and Boris will be running for re-election. Don Faber will also be running for the open position. Information on all three candidates is on the back of the invitation/ballot. Please read and follow the instructions carefully if you wish to cast your vote by absentee ballot. We hope to see all of you at the annual meeting. The Woodbine Project is nearing completion! We are up-and-running on the new section of line and working on the final stage of the project. Thank you again for your patience and cooperation during this much needed upgrade to our water system. Please be advised the ALPUC office will be closed Monday, May 29 th, for Memorial Day. PROPOSED STRATEGIC PLAN by Tom Kinsey The Strategic Planning Task Force has shared their final proposed plan with the Board of Directors. The Board has shared the proposal with committees for comment. Now is the window of opportunity for the community at large to comment. The proposal has been posted on Community Chat, in the Members Only section of the website, and several hard copies are available at the front desk of the Lodge. We are inviting POs to comment on the proposal until June 1st. All comments made by the end of the day on June 1st will be considered by the Board as it takes final action on the proposal. There are several ways you can provide the Board with your comments. There is an address: strategicplanning@alpinelake.com; if you want your comments viewed by all POs, please post the comments on the Strategic Planning heading on Community Chat; or send your hard copy comments to Alpine Board of Directors, Strategic Plan, 700 West Alpine Drive, Terra Alta, WV The Board will not respond to individual comments, but will consider each of them in deliberation for final action on the proposal. Any questions regarding the process, please Tom Kinsey at tomkinsey@alpinelake.com. 5

6 AN UPDATE FROM THE BOARD by Barb Conway As many of you are aware, the Golf Committee has made recommendations that include the removal of numerous trees to improve the health of the grass in several greens areas on our course. An area of concern was the elimination of several pine trees that are behind the Lodge, bordering the #18 green. After lengthy discussion, the Board approved the cutting of four pine trees, which will be replaced by trees that have deeper root systems. Tree cutting will be planned to minimize restrictions to golf play, and the replanting will be scheduled to maximize tree survival. Property owner plans for a dog park area, which had been discussed and approved by a previous Board, have been revived. At the May 6th workshop, the Board voted to approve a change in the location of the park. Interested property owners are working to fund this project, which will be constructed and maintained solely through property owner support. Please look for an article elsewhere in FWIW for more information. FROM MANAGEMENT & STAFF Linette Sines - General Manager Saturday is the Preston County Little League Golf Scramble. This event is going to bring 80 golfers to our course and dining facilities. The Staff and I had hoped to be able to open the restaurant for lunch daily starting on Monday. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find the necessary kitchen help to open the additional hours. We are working hard to find someone to fill that open position, and hope to be open for lunch daily by Memorial Day Weekend. We will continue to be open for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Thank you to all who have stopped in the Lakers Lounge or Evergreene Room for a meal. We've added a frozen drink maker, so we now have frozen Margaritas on tap! If you haven't tried the Chocolate Lava Cake, I suggest you do. YUMMY!!! Sunday we will have a Mother's Day Buffet (see menu at end of FWIW). The newly approved Fire Pit Policy and Fire Pit Registration Form can now be found online in the Property Owners Only section of our website under ECC forms. If you have a fire pit, or plan to install one, please review the policy and complete the registration form.
