Everyone is welcome come and bring your guests and friends. Cards & dominoes are popular, but other ideas are welcome. JAM SESSIONS Wednesdays - 6:00 PM Rhododendron Room We continue meeting each week to play together guitar, banjo, autoharp, harmonica, keyboard whatever your instrument of choice is. It s a fun way to learn from each other and we welcome anyone who would like to join us. Note: We will continue these sessions on Wed. evenings, even after Open Mic begins Open Mic Thursdays- 6:00PM- Ron Rogers Thanks to everyone who supported open mic on Thursday 23 May. We had 6 performers and the house count was 23 in the audience. Hope you all enjoyed the evening. For those who may not be familiar with Open Mic or be confused with a Jam, I ll try to clarify. In a Jam, everyone gets up on the stage to play each song. But with an Open Mic, the individual (or duo, trio, choir) has the stage to him/herself. Others join in BY INVITATION ONLY. This format gives people the opportunity to play before an audience without having to find material that everyone knows. So, new players get their feet wet, singer song writers get to have their songs heard, and pros get to try out material and to network. Our Open Mic is acoustic instruments only and each sign up gets four songs (or twenty minutes). Time permitting, we sometimes go around again. My job as host is to open, TRY to keep things moving, fill in time gaps, and close the evening. If you have never been to our Open Mic give it a try. Those who attended know how much fun it is. Hope to see you. KCB BRIDGE NEWS from Allan Melmed The Wednesday Afternoon Bridge group resumed play on Wed., April 17 th, at the lodge. PRESIDENT S REPORT by Fred Isennock, ALPOA Board President We continue to work on the SANDY cleanup. As of June 1st our dump will be available daily for property owner yard waste only, anyone wishing to use the dump must stop at the guard shack to pickup the key, at that time the security person on duty will inspect the load, after inspection you will receive the key to the cable at the dump entrance, when you leave the dump lock the cable and return the key to security. It is unfortunate that we must resort to this but lately we have discovered household garbage, treated lumber containing nails, metal etc. in our dump causing Alpine maintenance personnel to dispose of the illegal garbage. Last week one of our property owners took advantage and used the dump as part of a commercial logging operation. Sometimes I think that one thing I love most about being an adult is the right to buy candy wherever and whenever I want. 9 GOLF NEWS GOLF Committee Report Frank Mastalerz This week it looks like Spring has finally arrived at Alpine Lake!! Everything is green and blooming, and the trees on the golf course damaged and broken by Sandy have rebounded better than we could have imagined only a few short weeks ago. Many thanks to Chester and his crew for their work clearing and trimming the damaged trees on the course as well as their work throughout Alpine. Now is the time to get back to some serious outdoor recreational activities (namely, golfing!). In an effort to help maintain our beautiful course in peak condition, the golf committee is planning an Adopt-a Hole program. The plan is to have individuals sign up to take responsibility to help maintain their adopted holes. This would include periodically checking on the condition of their hole, fixing ball marks on the green, placing sand and seed mix in divots, cleaning up debris, etc. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the pro shop, and all members are encouraged and welcome to participate. Thanks in advance for your cooperation, and let s keep our course in a condition we can continue to be proud of! There has been some interest expressed in forming a nine hole men s golf league for those men interested in playing, but not necessarily wanting to play eighteen holes. If you are interested in participating, contact Lorraine Hart at hartstv@aol.com or call Happy golfing! 2013 ALLGO GOLF SEASON by Katherine Bennington, Pres. We had 19 golfers with one first-timer joining the group. After play, 17 golfers gathered in the Evergreene Room for dinner, results, and funny stories delivered by Skip Creamer. Scoring ranged from +3 to -2. Third place was determined by the dreaded card-off with two teams at +2 (Bob & Liz Kertesz, Jerry Edens & Bob Nelson lost out). Results teams earning bragging rights 1 st Place: Bob & Peg Caudry and Loring & Cathy Young (-2) 2 nd Place: Skip & Dottie Creamer and Bernie & Birgit Stock (Even) 3 rd Place: Dave Gallagher, Sue Thompson and Barb Conway (+2) May 27 The less-than-ideal weather came back today, so we canceled Strokers (again). It was gratifying to see so many golfers on the course at various times during the Memorial Day weekend. We all hope the nights with frost warnings and cold, rainy days are behind us and we can enjoy spring at Alpine. We ll try again next Monday evening warm, pleasant weather HAS to come, right? I'm sure weather had something to do with it. Approximately 25 PO's and guests shared their food and fellowship as they ate their annual quota of ramps...just enough to take your (good) breath away. Summer has officially begun. Aluminum cans were taken in on Tues., 365lbs worth $ Thanks to all who make this project work. The bin is now empty, so start bringing them in again. Crush them if you can in a plastic bag or just drop them off. 13
14 The summer season is here. SLOW DOWN AND BE NICE TO OUR GUESTS. They, too, may invest in our WV hideaway some day. A group of PO's invested in about 100 Power Ball tickets last week in the hopes of turning it in to 600,000,000 bucks. No luck! The $16 won bought 8 tickets which won $2, which won... The annual YARD SALE takes place at Alpine the 1st Saturday in August. Start saving nice things to donate. Remember the rule: If you haven't used it for two or more years, let someone else put it to use (or store it!!!) Aluminum Cans are again being collected behind the golf cart parking lot. Save yours in a grocery bag and drop them off. The POC makes $200+ each year when they are sold. THINK GREEN. More COMMITTEE NEWS ECC COMMITTEE John Laing, Chair ECC input: The variance allowing the removal of trees without a permit expired June 1st, Permits are now required to remove trees over 5 inches in diameter. These are no-fee permits and the ECC will work with property owners to issue permits in a timely manner. Permit applications left at the lodge desk before 8:00 AM on Thursday will be reviewed and if there are no issues the permit will be issued that Thursday. Permits are "good" for one year. Trees to be removed need to be marked, preferably with a colored tape or ribbon so that the ECC can identify the trees it needs to evaluate. If You need a permit before the next Thursday meeting of the ECC, call John Laing, ; or Dick Gallagher, and we will try to accommodate your schedule. No permit is required to remove downed trees or to trim branches, etc. Repairs of decks, doors, etc. that do not change the appearance of a house do not require a permit. If the work changes the color or appearance of the property you will need to file a permit application. If you are not sure, call one of the above numbers and we will provide personalized advice. Paragraph 10.C. of the Declaration of Restrictions says: "...or other activities undertaken which may...or create erosion or sliding problems..". Any work that exposes bare earth requires that you stabilize the soil. If a significant area is exposed, you need to erect a silt screen on the downhill side of the exposed area to catch runoff and thus prevent heavy rain from washing silt into the drainage system until the ground is stabilized. 14
