1 FOR WHAT IT S WORTH George Evans, Editor August 17, 2012 Editor s Comments A correction. In the last FWIW I said Bill Combs went to LUS on a basket scholarship. It should have been basketball scholarship. I will probably have my Indiana citizenship taken away from me. You can submit any item by ing to alpinefwiw@gmail.com; leave items in the box on the counter at the front desk, or call me at (304) Deadline for next issue is Wed. August 29 5th at noon. Next FWIW issued Fri. August 31st also around noon. FWIW is available in the lodge lobby or on Alpine Lake s website then click on FWIW and choose the date. Please attach your name to anything submitted in case I need to contact you. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Thoughts, Prayers & Thank You Messages If you know of someone from our community in nursing homes, recuperating at home, or struggling with health problems or the loss of a loved one, please contact us so that we can remember them in this section of FWIW. Thank you. Frank and Honesty would like to thank our Alpine friends for the cards and Kind thoughts upon the death of Frank's sister, Marilyn Wisniewski at the Goodwill retirement home in Grantsville, Md. on Aug. 8,2012. Frank & Honesty Buczek Thanks to Jenni Mills for her wonderful detective work that resulted in the return of my red kayak! She took the time to locate it, found the sticker number, went to the lodge, and made calls to find out the owner. I am forever grateful. You'll have to talk to Jenni to hear the "story of the red kayak" that was taken and put at someone else's home. Again, many thanks to Jenni. - Dolores McNaboe My sincere thanks to everyone who helped us, offered their assistance, prayers, and sympathy during the long illness and death of my husband, Jonas McKenzie. It is comfortable to have caring neighbors and live in a safe community. Special thanks to Mac and Louise Dobeck. Betty McKenzie Longtime property owner/homeowner Elaine Croft passed away August 2, 2012 after a long illness. She and her husband, chuck, first visited Alpine Lake in 1973 and bought a lot that day. When the cabins went up for sale in 1977 they sold the lot and bought cabin #1 and have been enjoying it ever since. You may have seen her on the golf course with husband Chuck and son Dennis and more recently on the mini golf course with granddaughter Carly and her family. She was 86 years old - Dennis Croft. ************************************************************* COMING SOON. Once in a Blue Moon by Tom Kinsey Yes, there is a blue moon in August. So the Lake Management Committee is sponsoring a Moonlight boat tour of Alpine Lake, Friday August 31. Contact either Frank Ross or Tom Kinsey for details and to sign-up. 1

It's small and has dimples And can't be trusted at all. It seems to seek nature In an unnatural land. It seems to seek shelter In woods, water, and sand. I'm often its' companion, But never its' master. But it seems to act best When my swing is slower, not faster. 3

5 August 13, 2012 A special welcome to first time Strokers participants, Vicki Zimpo, Mary Ann Krewson, and Barry Krewson. Participating for the first time this season were Lorraine Hart, Bob Hart, Joyce Guyton and Gail Guyton. The results were: 1st - Mike Bennington, Katherine Bennington, Gail Guyton and Joyce Guyton Score -4 (Card Off) audited 2nd - Bob Kertesz, Liz Kertesz, Barry Krewson and Mary Ann Krewson Score -4 3rd - Loring Young, Cathy Young, Bob Hart and Lorraine Hart Score -3 As usual, the entertainment provided by the "soon to be famous", Skip Creamer, was outstanding. ALLGO News - by Mary Piehl, VP On July 26th a few of our hardier members ventured out after early morning rain. They played a Two-Man Scotch format with the following 18 hole results: 1st Vickie Mastalerz and Ann Dunson with a birdie on 14. 2nd Becky Meacham and Trish Birch 3rd Sue Thompson and Ann Lee Colaw One team, Connie Shaffer and Barb Conway, played 9 holes with a score of 57. August 2nd we played High and Low Gross. The winning 18-hole team was Ann Dunson, Mary Piehl and Peggy Rogers with a score of 210. They were followed by Connie Shaffer, Vickie Mastalerz, Ann Lee Colaw and Charlotte Wiles who shot 221. The biggest news of the day was that Ann Dunson did NOT have a birdie. Those who did were Katherine Bennington on 11, Sandy Teets on 16 and Lorraine Hart on 13. "Monopoly" was the theme for this year's ALLGO Invitational, which took place Thursday, August 9th. We thank Bernie Stock who, dressed as the Monopoly Man, posed for photos and greeted many of the 100 women who came from sixteen golf clubs to participate. The co-chairladies, Diana Nevin and Wanda Hutchings, did an outstanding job staging this huge event. They thank all of the Alpine Lake volunteers - men, women, golfers or not - who donated their time, expertise and gifts to make this year's event memorable. Despite a lightning delay we managed to complete the eighteen-hole competition with the winning team shooting an exceptional 102 in two-man best ball format. Alpine Lake was represented by Kathy Shanahan, first place team, Robin Larry, second place and Ann Dunson, third place. Dee Browning took the prize for Closest to the Pin on number 14. About twenty other Alpine Lake ladies enjoyed playing the course, meeting new friends and, of course, the closing luncheon >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 5

In addition the bake sale to benefit the TA Food Pantry yielded $300 to be used for school supplies. Thanks to all who donated, set up, price, sell, deliver, pick up, clean up, bake and buy. So many PO's were involved; it would be easier to list those we didn't see. Some volunteers actually worked all four days. A special thanks to Delano who picked up the remaining items and gave us a donation as well. You may see some of the items and much more at the old school house in downtown Terra Alta. One could spend hours viewing his showcase of items. Labor Day Picnic: We will again have our annual picnic at the Boathouse on Sat. Sept.1st from noon until 3PM. As we did last year, hamburgers, hot dogs, paper goods, corn and soft drinks will be provided. Please bring something to share (covered dish, salad or dessert) Donations are welcome to assist in the cost of the meat and paper goods. Music and games will be there for your entertainment. Ron Rogers will be playing and singing some of his favorites in the Boathouse from 1:30 till 3 PM. Please come and enjoy!!! 6
7 Oktoberfest: Believe it or not, our annual Oktoberfest is less than 1 month away. Our organizational meeting took place this past Tuesday and it is now time to get to work. Our program will follow that of years past with a few new twists. Again, many volunteers will be needed to make it a success. We are hoping for most of last year s volunteers to return as well as some new blood. If you want to help out in some way please call Bernie or Birgit Stock at ASAP!!!! If everyone puts in a couple of hours we can all do our part and enjoy ourselves as well. Mark your calendars if you have not already done so. SATURDAY, SEPT. 15 th, 12NOON till DARK. Oktoberfest breakfast: The men of Alpine Lake will treat you to a scrumptious breakfast Sunday Sept. 16th from 8 AM until food runs out. Cost is only $8 for the works. Don't miss it!!! Aluminum cans - The bin is almost full again; bring yours up soon before our next trip. Suggestion box: Please don't forget to use the suggestion box on the front desk for your constructive comments and needs. (Compliments and kudos are also welcome.). Our new GM, Bill Combs said he would read them daily... Thanks for supporting your community. Bernie and Birgit Stock >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> OUR NEIGHBORING COMMUNITIES Senior Bowlers Needed Par-Matt Lanes in Oakland has a senior bowling league on Thursdays at noon. The league is looking for new members, or those who might be willing to substitute. The cost is approximately ten dollars per week and the league goes from September to March. The first day of bowling will be the Thursday after Labor Day, September 6th. Join Gary Cox, Kathy Berry, and Dick & Jo Gallagher as Alpine Lakers in the league. If you are interested or need more information, please call Dick or Jo Gallagher at This is a full handicap league with teams made up based on a balance of ability, so don't worry about your skill level... it's a social league (kind of like our Strokers in golf). 7
